I have always wanted to do one of these so I figured starting on the second volume of my comic The Fantasy Book Club was as good a reason as any.

The subject is the cover for Issue 5: Open Book which will begin posting on March 31st. Due date for submissions is March 13th.

There are a lot of details in this piece since it was designed as a cover/poster, so don’t feel like you need to recreate it exactly. Be creative and give it your interpretation!

To be honest, I thought we’d never see more Arrowsmith stories from Kurt Busiek & Carlos Pacheco beyond the first series. Which would have been a shame, because that first series, introducing a fantasy world version of WWI where magic has been weaponized, is a favorite comic of mine. I love how it balances the wonder of a magical world where fighter pilots fly with the power of little dragons on their shoulders with the bleakness of a world in transition as seen during the First World War. This has been a whirlwind of a week so far for my webcomic The Fantasy Book Club on Webtoon. Ive been getting pretty close to hitting 1k subs for a while now after two years of weekly posting and marketing online and at conventions. I was so proud when I got to 920 subscribers all on my own with no features on Webtoons app at all.

Then this happened:

Which within the first night put me over 1k and officially graduated from Hidden Gems.

But before I could even finish my celebratory art to mark the occasion I far exceeded what I thought a feature like this would do.

1400 subscribers?!? It’s only Wednesday! There’s still 4 days left before the feature ends. And my page views have more than doubled last months numbers entirely. I— I’m flabbergasted to be honest.

I think I spent so long pushing and feeling like I wasn’t getting anywhere that I kinda thought… maybe it was me? I love my comic and my characters. In fact I’m kind of obsessed with it. But I had resigned myself to the idea that maybe it just didn’t have the broad appeal that it needed to be successful. And that was ok! I wanted to tell this story whether people wanted to read it or not.

But apparently they do want to read it?! Not just subscribe to and never read, people are devouring all 100 episodes and waiting for more! WHAT?

This is going to take me a bit of time to wrap my head around completely but for right now all I can be is grateful.
