Getting into andromeda after spending the last few weeks replaying the original ME trilogy is so funny, I feel like I've stepped from a hardcore military sci-fi straight into a young adult adventure coming of age story

To be a bit more positive on here before I leave in four days and won't be able to play Andromeda again for three weeks. (Might play Dragon Age though cause my laptop can run that.)
Love Jaal! Best boy in the game. Also together with Vetra and occasionally Drack when he feels like it the only adult. I will never grow tired of him just being agressively adult about things and everyone just being thrown by it. Also the banter between him and the others are alyways great. I still think they did integrate the information exchange between Angara and Initiative well, but the things that are there are great, both in lore and in humour. I also just reached Kadara and his reactions are gold, he's just so annoyed by everything. He's usually so calm about most things but here he's just so grumpy. xD The things he's not calm about are also great! Hoh boy, BioWare actually dealing with the emotional fallout of certain situations? Consider me shocked and pleasantly surprised. Jaal dealing with the exaltation reveal is really well handled. Kudos on that! He is also very relatable just in general and his private moments on the Tempest are very nice.
Peebee! I didn't set out to romance her because I didn't really jive with her design, but I encountered her and immediately went '... Oh fuck, she's cute' and she is. Very cute. She also gave me the best courting gift ever, that VI is basically an upgraded version of my beloved assault turret, I am absolutely seduced. She is a delight to have around and I'm curious to see where her character arc goes.
Vetra! Oh Vetra, beloved of my life, horribly relatable wife, you and your sister will be the end of me. Mom of the group in the best way and I am okay with her taking her time to really get into the romance. I would also be really interested in like a short story with her and Garrus, cause I feel like they would play off of each other in fascinating ways. I think she would really make him uncomfortable with her points but he wouldn't be able to really say why. She is wonderful addition both just on her own and as a counterpoint to Garrus in the original trilogy.
Suvi! To be honest I just had Suvi saved in my brain as 'the human' and later 'the lesbian human' and didn't really expect much out of her, but she was the breaking point for me to get the poly mod. And yes it also is the accent. xD But also just her character, she's funny, she's interesting, she's charming and just a little bit awkward in a confident way. I also think (from what I've seen for now) that her religion deal got handled with a lot more care then Ashley's. I will also say though that I have yet to do my Ashley run (though I intend to) so that is only based of ME1, so take that opinion with a grain of salt. But where Ashley to me came across as 'space Christian cause haha religion in sci-fi am I right?' Suvi got a much more nuanced (though still distinctly monotheistic so you know) take on faith that I find interesting to explore. She also for now seems more interested in god as creator figure rather than a leader figure, which also helps. I am interested to see where they'll take it anyway.
Drack and Kesh! All the others before are people I am romancing on this run, but Drack and Kesh also deserve a spot. The Krogans are not necessarily always badly handled in the trilogy, in fact I like both Wrex and Grunt very much, but they are also very easy to fuck up and just make into the 'haha violence' people and neither Kesh nor Drack are that. Sure Dreck has a bit of that, but it's never the only thing. He also doesn't feel like a character who just enjoys violence just for its own sake. Even when he's out alone when you meet him, he is in the end fighting still for his people and for Kesh. And he also has nuanced opinions and is not an idiot. He thinks it was right for his people to leave but he also agrees with Kesh's decision to stay. And Kesh herself is also a very refreshing representation of a Krogan woman. I like Bekara, but she is a very distinctive form of character and her being the only Krogan woman in the whole trilogy does not help that. Kesh is not that character. She acknowledges the genophage and its effects, but she is very distinctly not here to make babies or dwell on the fact she can't. She's here to handle shit and get some work done to help everyone including her own people. And Drack supports that! Their relationship is very sweet and I really appreciate that it comes from two Krogans especially. Similarly I really like Drack and Vetra's bonding over being/having been a provider for a younger loved one.
Kandros. I just think he's neat. He's such a vibe honestly.
Infinite levels! Hell yeah! My bullshit completionist heart can grind and get literally every ability maxed!
The combat (kinda). See I don't really do the combat like the game wants me to. At this point what I do is collect as many power upgrades as I can, throw out my assault turret, throw out the remnant VI, cast a biotic shield, and then watch everything die. xD I'm having great fun with that honestly. I do wish I was able to equip more abilities though.

Article: 'Exclusive: Connie Booth, One of the Chief Architects of PlayStation's First-Party Studio System, Is Joining EA'
Veteran executive spent more than 30 years at Sony before her departure in 2023.
Excerpt:
"Former PlayStation executive Connie Booth, one of the chief architects of PlayStation's first-party strategy before her unexpected departure in 2023, is joining EA to help lead its studios amid its ongoing restructure. Booth's title will be Group General Manager, Action RPG, with a portfolio that will include EA Motive (Iron Man), Cliffhanger (Black Panther), and BioWare (Dragon Age, Mass Effect). She will report directly to EA Entertainment head Laura Miele. "Connie spent more than 30 years helping to build Sony Interactive Entertainment’s internal studios and is responsible for guiding the development of some of their biggest franchises, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 1 & 2, The Last of Us, Ghost of Tsushima, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, to name just a few," Miele said in a statement. "She is known for having created an incredible developer-first culture and supporting creative vision while driving innovation. I have known Connie for many years and have always been impressed by her love and commitment to games. She especially cares about game developers. She has an impeccable reputation within the development community and will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our games." [...] Booth's hiring points to EA's desire to replicate some of PlayStation's current exclusives strategy, in which it has found success with large-scale single-player games such as God of War and Spider-Man. In initiating its current restructure, EA has said that it is prioritizing its own franchises and that one of its pillars is "blockbuster storytelling" — an area in which Booth has considerable experience. One of Booth's major tasks will be revitalizing BioWare, which is hoping that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will reverse its fortunes after Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda. BioWare suffered painful layoffs in 2023 and its next entry in the Mass Effect franchise remains in pre-production."

Fan Work Friday Saturday
Rules: If you're tagged, MAKE A NEW POST and showcase one fanartist or fanfic you recommend (with links), and tag someone to give their recs next! Don't forget to reblog the rec you were tagged in!
Thank you for the tag @dreadfutures! I think this is a fantastic idea c: I am also going to do one of each!
Fanartist: @ndostairlyrium

I think the first piece of art I saw from Ali was this piece of her Inquisitor Ankh and I was floored! She has such a talent for tucking as much color and detail as possible into every piece. The way she draws expressions is incredibly compelling to me and the piece she made of Fenris and my Hawke (above) continues to bring me infinite joy. Just a genuinely funny, kind, and incredibly skilled person who's made just so many DA art pieces that I love!
You can find her commission info here or check out her DA blog here c:
Fanfic: Portrait of a Man by Dulcidyne
Rating: T Words: 3,136 Pairing: Cullen/Inquisitor Trevelyan Summary: It was an excellent painting: the man in it heroic, his face imposing to the point of intimidation. She opened her mouth to say that it looked nothing at all like Cullen but stopped and realized that it did look like Cullen the way most people saw him--the way she had seen him when they first met under a sky tattered and full of demons: a soldier, a leader, a man devoted to a cause, a man incapable of smiling probably.
This is one of my favorite Cullen fics! I love anything that delves into the tension between public and private perceptions for those who've been forced into a very public position (as the Inquisitor has been). This piece is one of those short fics that you immediately scroll back up to the top and read again. It's sweet, it's funny, it made me think, and I've read it many times!
(Also, this author has written some of my favorite Mass Effect fic too: Big, Dramatic Love Confession (Explicit; set in ME3) and Experiments in Diplomacy (T; Andromeda), the latter of which is just. man. so beautifully written)

Out of curiosity, and not meaning to offend, why do you see Kadara as a bad portrayal of colonialism? I mean, I won't argue that the outlaws on Kadara are horrible, especially to the Angarans, and that they are the epitome of all the horrible shit that colonialists did, but I thought that was sorta the point? It's being portrayed as an utterly bad thing. I never felt like I was supposed to sympathize with the outlaws. Then again, I only played through Kadara once, so I may be remembering wrong.
Hi anon, I’m answering this question here because it’s obviously better suited for my (very underused LOL) Mass Effect blog.
The big problem I had with Kadara is that wile yes, the Outcasts are almost exclusively portrayed as the bad guys, they are the bad guys to... other humans, and namely the Andromeda Initiative.
Like you said, the Outcasts are horrible to the angarans. But while it is aptly shown as the terrible thing it is, Ryder is incapable of doing or saying anything themselves about this. The player is forced into taking a sidelines position.
The very first thing you see when stepping onto Kadara is the Outcasts beating up a local angara citizen being exiled, and saying that he should have paid a protection fee... to live in a port where he has lived long before they even arrived in the galaxy.
Tumblr media
Local Angara: You won’t get away with this.
Outcast Guard: [Chuckles.]
Local Angara: My people won’t allow it!
Outcast Guard: If not for us, the angara would’ve been slaughtered by the kett.
Local Angara: This is our home!
Outcast Guard: Should’ve paid your protection fees then.
Can you intervene? In fact, can you so much as say “stop it?” Nope. At most you can ask one of the Outcasts what’s going on, and then SAM advises not to get involved. But SAM doesn’t seem to have a problem with Ryder getting involved in whole missions like Out of the Frying Pan, where it’s a human that was wrongly exiled.
Other examples of how the angara are poorly treated on their own planet is the Outcasts denying them jobs, and the whole quest Something in the Water.
Tumblr media
No Angaran Recruits: Our recruiters have reported a number of angara interested in joining or ranks. Some of you have even encouraged them. Stop. At least for right now, the Outcasts are for exiles only. Not all angara are happy about our rise to power. Until we know that our “new friends” can be trusted, they are not Outcast material. Kaetus
“Not all angara are happy about our rise to power?” Wow, that’s a shocker. Who would’ve thought people might have a problem with you coming into their home, getting rid of one oppressor and then just taking their place.
But while we see plenty of examples of how terrible the humans are to the angarans on this planet, there is very little content from the angara. Mostly because they’ve all been kicked out and killed, I guess? But here is the real kicker: In the end, your choices to support who controls the planet fall between one human or another. There is no way to return control to the angara, from which it was forcefully taken in the first place.
I like Reyes a lot, and I also don’t have as much a problem with Sloane as a lot of the fandom does, TBH. They both have their good and bad qualities. I think Reyes is the better option because at least he appears to be more sincere with his desire to work with the angara--Sloane claims to care, and yet well, see the above, not to mention Keema Dohrgun herself says it’s all for show--but how about we put Keema Dohrgun in charge for real, instead of just a figurehead?

I think if I were writing the Reyes romance in Mass effect Andromeda I would give Ryder an opportunity to come back to him after dumping him during high noon, because there are a lot of reasons you might in the moment be like I'm not okay with being lied to, or I think I'm not okay with being with someone like you
And then as you continue to make hard decisions and kill lots of people, but you're still in the position of having the support of the Nexus and to some extent the angaran resistance while he's out here trying to clean up the mess that the Nexus basically caused... It was never going to be pretty.
Ryder could find that they relate to him more than they think or more than they want to. Hell, that could be the reason they ran away in the first place. But having that time to make those connections and think them through could mean that they change their mind and go back.
Plus, after everything, after seeing more horrors and making ugly choices, it might be nice to have someone who is in no position to judge you for it and wouldn't anyway and is also totally smitten.

Fandom Questions
Ah! Got tagged by @theoriginalladya - Many thanks! I think I read this at like...some obscene hour in the early morning, passed back out, and promptly forgot about it til just now hahaha
Tagging let's see uhhh... @urdnotflexthejedibard @aleiocus @solstheimtxt @clericofshadows and uhhh @illusivesoul -- only if ya'll want to, of course!
How many works do you have on AO3? 50!
What's your total AO3 words count? 643,168
What fandoms do you write for? That have actually been posted: Mass Effect, Mass Effect: Andromeda, Cyberpunk: 2077, Dragon Age, Fallout 4, The Outer Worlds
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Intangible Things (131) The Paths You Take (125) Biotic Theory (95) No Matter What (92) Stealing for Spite (92)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I try to! Even just an expression of gratitude, though I'm not averse to rambling hahaha
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Hmm that's probably No Matter What, my in between fic for ME2 and ME3...
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Currently, gotta say Restoration (ME3/Post-ME3, mshepclone x Major Coats)
Do you get hate on fics? Hmm I don't think I'd qualify anything as "hate," but I have had readers express a dislike for a direction I seemed to be going in. Eh, what can ya do?
Do you write smut. If so what kind? I do! Generally not very explicit, and I'm a sucker for fluffy smut specifically. I love lovers being incredibly dorky together, and that includes in the bedroom.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written? Hahahah, yes. Stardew Effect is a crossover of Mass Effect and Stardew Valley that I'm surprised got a lot of positive reception haha
Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge
Have you ever had a fic translated? No
Have you ever cowritten a fic before? No. Original works, yes, but that was a while back, and never for fanfics.
What's your all-time favourite ship? I gotta pick ONE!? How about...one per my favorite fandoms...ME: mshenko, ME:A, mreyder, and Cyberpunk: m!V x Kerry
What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will? It's not a matter of doubt, it's a matter of getting my muses to be consistent. I'll get to all WIPs in due time, though some may be absorbed into other projects that better suit them
What are your writing strengths? I like to think I'm mechanically and stylistically pretty consistent?
What are your writing weaknesses? Plotting. Outlining. Like long-form, I just can't follow an outline to save my life
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic? I've had some interjections of other languages (mostly Spanish, since I have some very very basic understanding there), but otherwise I don't think I could get the words to flow right if it wasn't primarily in my native language.
First fandom you wrote for? TECHNICALLY? Tortall. But I was like, 11 and idr what it was even about. More recently, Mass Effect.
Favourite fic you've ever written? Ahh that's hard! Restoration will always have a special place in my heart, but Chasing Storms had some really fun moments too in terms of writing in and of itself

Okay, I think I finally have actual proof now that I did NOT cause my computer issues. I found a forum where other people with the same make/model and two make/models right next to it all have had similar issues from day one with their PCs. Then Dell revoked all of the previous driver updates they'd been pushing and yesterday, here comes 3 marked critical: BIOS and the Nvidia and Intel graphics drivers, all brand spankin' new (literally released that week or that day in Intel's case) and with the purpose of "fixing bug checks and providing system stability." Bug checks being the official term for a Blue Screen of Death, that is. Normally I wouldn't update on day one of a new release but, well, my computer crashed this morning when I just turned it on and it was sitting idle after about 5 minutes of up-time so I figured that was my sign.
All 3 updates are now applied. If you pray, I'd appreciate it. If you have time to spare me some kind thoughts, to put some positive energy out there in the universe, just whatever, I appreciate it. I didn't realize how much I truly rely on my computer to deal with my anxiety, depression and panic attack issues until not only do I NOT have access to the things I use to try to get through them all, but the computer's switching off at random times has made all of them so much worse.
Yeah, Halo's just a game but it's truly helped me redirect if I'm struggling with anxiety or a panic attack that's looming. Getting really involved in Mass Effect: Andromeda's various romances, making GIFs of them, learning to craft weapons, that sort of thing, it's helped me focus on things other than worrying about RL stuff. I really could use all of those things back, you know? Plus, I was looking forward to so many of the new games I've added to my Steam library. Learning something new can also help redirect my brain when it's spiraling out of control.
And this isn't even to touch on doing creative things like making GIFs, vidding and writing. I'm still working on my "15 Minutes" ch7 by hand but it's so much slower than being able to type it. I was really hoping to have at least this chapter up before Halo s2 starts but I'm not sure if I can, if I'm just scratching away with pencil and paper, not even certain how I'm going to get those words on the Internet anyway.
I mean, just imagine how frustrating it would be if whatever device you use would just blink off with no rhyme or reason, no way to predict when whatever you're doing will just be gone. Sometimes it does it a couple times a day, sometimes 8 times an hour. You can't do 90% of what you usually do online anyway and the other 10% feels like you're walking through a minefield, just waiting to take one wrong step. And nothing works to fix it. Nothing. You spend hours researching, desperate to find The Thing That Will Work and it's just not out there. That's been the past few weeks with this computer.
Considering that my previous computer is ALSO in this make/model line, just back several years, makes me wonder if the issues it began to have out of the blue in October, 2023 are related. I've seen a LOT of mentions in that forum of people whose computer suddenly went bad in Oct, 23. That seems like an awfully big coincidence, doesn't it?
Anyway, just wanted to check in. Hope you're all doing well and here's hoping that I'm now on the road to getting to just... do things on the computer and the Internet again like I used to. I miss it so much and I really miss all of you. Love to you all. 💖

Lily BioWare HAS been becoming shit
literally the last good game they’ve made was a fucking remaster with the actual new games they’ve made (andromeda and Anthem) being shit and the mmo they’ve made currently going downhill
Lily you preach on and on about how “we need to let things go and not to hold companies and media on a high pedestal” yet you do this shit constantly with BioWare
bioware’s quickly becoming the Canadian version of blizzard maybe stop holding them up to a high pedestal and accept the bioware you loved doesn’t exist anymore especially with all the recent layoffs
Everyone else can see that bioware lost their soul and is now just sucking EA’s cock why can’t you?
the actual new games they’ve made (andromeda and Anthem) being shit and the mmo they’ve made currently going downhill
Let's unpack that.
Andromeda was shit for one very simple reason: EA mandated that all their studios use their god awful Frostbite Engine, which only DICE knows the arcane mystic incantation to make it not shit, and which they had to learn WHILE developing the game.
The same problem was had by Kingdom Hearts 3, which changed engines mid-development and the team had to relearn an engine TWICE (Luminous and then Unreal) which contributed to the troubled development.
Anthem was EA's bright idea to have their *checks notes* character focused action RPG devs make a *checks notes* looter shooter. Did anyone expect that to go well? I doubt it.
As for SWTOR, SWTOR has been the "tortanic" according to people who have never played it for twelve fucking years now.
bioware’s quickly becoming the Canadian version of blizzard maybe stop holding them up to a high pedestal and accept the bioware you loved doesn’t exist anymore especially with all the recent layoffs
Honey I have accepted the fundamental difference between Old BioWare and New BioWare a long time ago. I'm not expecting them to jump right back in and make a game with the same magic as Baldur's Gate 2.
All of their games have different lead writers. BG2 was James Ohlen, KOTOR and Mass Effect were Drew Karpyshyn and Mac Walters, Dragon Age was David Gaider, and Andromeda was John Dombrow.
Different writers make different games, what a shock.
But this isn't new. BioWare has had duds before. I understand that you're fucking young, but I remember Neverwinter Nights. A game that set itself up as a proto 3D RPG Maker. Or Jade Empire, the one BioWare game NONE of you have played.
Or how about FUCKING DRAGON AGE?! The runty little stepchild to Mass Effect which has always exemplified the worst of BioWare's B Team? Dragon Age is fucking terrible, my dude.
You think they're in the toilet because of ANTHEM? And ANDROMEDA? I remember Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Don't cite the deep magics to me, I was there when it was written.
The thing is... BioWare is in the unique position of propping up the careers of three different development studios now. Black Isle, Obsidian and Larian Studios all got where they were by cribbing BioWare's notes. Often badly.
Black Isle had the dumbass idea to make Icewind Dale, essentially Baldur's Gate with the character-focused storytelling ripped out, and it was fucking terrible. And they made Planescape Torment. The best game ever made according to people who've never played it.
Obsidian put themselves on the map with Neverwinter Nights 2 and KOTOR 2, both of which heavily relied on their precursors to even work. And then later on they crowdfunded a Baldur's Gate knock-off and it was a tepid response at best. All their attempts to make original games flounder and die.
And Larian Studios has been making one game their entire life: Baldur's Gate, but the Auto Pause Every Round Is Permanently On. And the one time it succeeded was the one time the dev they were ripping off hadn't released a game in 6 years.
BioWare's gone through some garbage over the last few years, but they've consistently had a better track record than most "Darling" game devs.
I remember when CD Projekt Red was a gaming community darling despite having only 1 game anyone actually liked.
I remember when Valve was practically fucking worshipped all while engaging in every scummy business practice on the planet, creating a DRM monopoly and being applauded for it during a time where DRM was hated. Because they were "Valve" and "Praise Gaben."
Obsidian hasn't released a good game in 13 or 19 years depending on how much you like philosophical rants.
BioWare's biggest crime is... well crunch, but their second biggest crime is releasing one dud every three games. And you what's gonna happen? Mass Effect 4 is going to come out and we're all going to forget about Andromeda and Anthem. Just like how we all forgot about Jade Empire and Neverwinter Nights when Mass Effect 1 came out.
There are absolute garbage devs out there, but BioWare doesn't even make the list my dude.

On Space Travel
A few things out of the way first:
Our star is Sol. Our planet is Terra. Our moon is Luna.
When referring to a star with orbiting planets, the star is the sun for those planets, and the whole thing is referred to as a Stellar System.
There is only one Solar / Sol System, and that's ours.
-----
The speed of light is 300,000km/s.
We all know that we cannot travel at the speed of light, but most people don't know why, other than just relativity. So, in Relativity, space, time, and mass are all relative. As you reach relativistic speeds, mass increases, time dilates, and length contracts. More on that later, but for now, when you reach the speed of light, mass becomes infinite. Further, the math most people learned in high school is over simplified. Most people calculate acceleration with a constant force, but instead you have constant power. Power = Force x Velocity, meaning that the faster you are moving in a direction, the less force you get for the same power. The reason it's simplified is that you need calculus to properly calculate the acceleration with constant power.
Most realistic expectations have us not being able to travel faster than 10% c.
The closest Stellar System is Proxima / Alpha Centauri A/B. We thought it was 1 star, but turns out it's 3. Of the three, the weakest, Proxima, is the closest. Proxima is 4.2 Light-Years away. Meaning that traveling at the speed of light, it would take 4.2 years to reach. Since 10% c is the highest we can likely achieve, that means it will take 42 years, minimum, to reach Proxima. Alpha Centauri is notably metal poor, and likely would make a poor candidate for doing anything useful. Instead, we probably want to go for Tau Ceti, which is around 12 Light-Years. This means that at 10% c, it would take 120 years to reach.
10% c is also the limit for Sub-Light Speeds. Sub-Light speeds are when you move fast enough to feel the effects of Relativity. This involves increased mass, expanded length, and the crew on the ship would experience the passage of time slower than from an external reference point. At 10%, it's about half of a percent faster.
The most common way to measure the distances in this scale is Light-Year. This is the distance light can travel in a year. 9.46.10^12, or 9,460,000,000,000km. The next most common way of measuring distance is the Parsec, which isshort for: Parallax of One Arc Second. There are 360 degrees. Degrees are divided into 60 Arc-Minutes, which are then divided into 60 Arc-Seconds, (we can blame the Babylonians. no, seriously). So, an Arc-Second is 1/360th of degree. Distance to stars is calculated from their measured parallax. This is the amount a star apparently moves position throughout the year. So, this means a Parallax of One Arc Second = 3.26 Light-Years. Parallax is more accurate than Light-Years, because that's literally what we are measuring.
The Milky Way, our galaxy, is 25,881-26,996 Light-Years across. So, at our 10% of c limit, it would take 260,000 years to cross.
The closest Dwarf galaxy to Terra is 0.025 Mega-Light-Years.
= 2.5 Kilo-Light-Years.
= 2,500 Light Years
This is surprising.
The closest full-sized galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.548 Mega-Light-Years.
= 2,548,000 light years away.
This is to put things into perspective.
Now, if you want planets to interact with each other on a regular basis, you kind of need to bend, if not outright break the rules.
There are two main ways this is done in fiction:
Space Folding: You compress space in front of you, or outright fold two disparate places together. This means that the physical distance you need to travel is dramatically lessened.
Hyperspace: The idea is that if we expand space to the fourth physical dimension, then maybe space isn't as straight as we think it is. Therefore, a trip through all four dimensions, might find a path that is shorter.
Whatever you decide to do, it should be consistent, even if it's consistently inconsistent. Say, have a number scale, the higher number means you go faster. Do something logarithmic, the idea that the longer the journey, the more time you have to power up the system, thereby making longer range travel take no where near as much time as you would expect, but still longer than short range travel. O you can do the 40k thing, and have Warp Storms that can completely change travel time, and even let you get lost in time and space.

Tafeno System, 2820.
From the crowded bridge of the Tempest, Ryder stared at the ships outside. The rest of the crew, having all crammed onto the bridge when Kallo had announced their arrival in Tafeno, did the same.
The good news was that they’d found the Paarchero undamaged. Neutral news was that everything on it aside from cryostasis facilities was on standby. The bad news was that the ark was currently tethered to the Verakan.
“Well, everything just got a lot more complicated,” said Ryder. “Those tethers are going to be a problem.”
Thaia, who’d been studying the tactical display’s projections of the initial scans of both ships from a position to Kallo’s right, finally uncrossed her arms to point at the Verakan. Then she immediately crossed them again. “Those big-ass guns aimed at the ark might also be a problem.”

20 Fanfic Questions
I was tagged by @bioticbooty. Thank you, friend!
Tagging @mtreebeardiles @tiny-banana-time @shadoedseptmbr and @wrathoscribbles and anyone else who wants to participate.
How many works do you have on AO3?
153 stories across 40 series
2. What's your total AO3 words count?
2,700,745
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Mostly Mass Effect. Some Dragon Age in the past and some crossover worlds with ME (World of Darkness, WWII, etc.). Potentially Baldur's Gate 3 in future if the muses start talking.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Ever Constant - My Dragon Age epic fic. FemCousland/Nathaniel Howe, pre-Blight through Dragon Age: Origins. (103)
Dribbles & Drabs - a collection of writing prompts for various pairings, mostly Mass Effect related, mostly Caleb Shepard but also includes Michael Shepard, Kristofer Shepard, Tessa Shepard, Abbots (Abby Williams/Major Coats) and a few others. (102)
Found Family - A Collection of Drabbles - specific writing prompts from the Dribbles & Drabs collection related to Caleb Shepard/Kaidan Alenko and their kids. (92)
Destiny's Road - married Shep/Shep AU pairing set in ME1, first of the three game related stories. (83)
Destiny's Fate - divorced ShepShep AU pairing set in ME3, third of three game related stories. (64)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do, yes! I love to hear from readers!
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably either Bury Me In Willow , Give Me Peace, or Never Alone.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Difficult to say, but Shepard in Sherwood is a pretty fun, positive one.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have two or three times, unsolicited comments from people who believe their opinion matters more than how I want to tell my story.
9. Do you write smut. If so what kind?
It depends. I have in past, I do on occasion these days, but it's very rare because I'm just not that comfortable writing it. I tend to stress a lot more when writing smut, too.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Several, actually. Most of mine are crossovers with historical time periods rather than fandoms (though there are a couple) ME/World of Darkness, ME/WWII, ME/ME Andromeda, a couple of ME/Celtic Ireland, and a new ME/American Revolution idea. I have a couple ideas for ME/DAO crossovers, but have yet to start them.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
A couple small, old ones.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Translated, no. Podcasted, yes.
13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?
Yes. In 2022, @happychica and I began writing Caleb Shepard in her Modern ME series, The Town of Norman in the story, As Luck Would Have It
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
mshenko and femshenko. Okay, who am I kidding, anyone and Kaidan - Alenkoats (with Coats), Reylenko (with Reyes Vidal), Parasenko (with Gianna Parasini). Another very high fave of mine (because of Caleb and Kaidan) is Abboats - Abby Williams/Major Coats.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
I would love to bring all the hundreds of ideas I have drabbled on (but not shared), or started but haven't gotten back to, but it probably won't happen. For now, I just take it a day at a time and hope the muses will keep inspiring me so I can get more done.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Plotting.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Just about everything else. I have moments where I sort of go 'zen' and can get good things going, but it isn't consistent for me, and I wish it was. Still, I'm constantly working on them, so I hope I have at least improved them somewhat over the years and will continue to do so.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have done, to a point, with fics, but not usually more than an expression here or there. If I do, it's usually French because I have the most experience with it.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Dragon Age
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
This is like asking me to pick which of my children is my favorite!!!
(Okay, so I only have one kid - but I have TONS of stories!!!)
For now I will say anything with Caleb Shepard. He has been such a wonderful learning experience for me and continues to be, and I love how his world has been turning out - past, present and future. Can't wait to share it all!

From: Arrival in Andromeda, Chapter Three
Fandom: Mass Effect Andromeda
Pairing: endgame MReyder. Will have some Reyes/OMC and Reyes/Zia before he meets Scott.
Fic summary:
Scott Ryder never saw his life going this way, not that anyone ever asked him his opinion. Now he's pathfinder with too many people depending on his young shoulders and trying to figure out what he wants for himself.
Reyes Vidal, man of mystery, former pilot and now sometimes smuggler. Who knows where he came from or his motivations but he's come to Andromeda to change his destiny.
What neither Scott nor Reyes could have predicted is what their lives would be once they came to Andromeda.
Tags/warnings: Reyes and Scott are aged up slightly just to give time for character development/training. Not exactly canon compliant where it suits the story. Reyes Vidal backstory heavy so lots of OCs in Reyes’ parts.
Tumblr media
As they have no chips or anything to use as wagers except empty protein shakes and wrappers, Reyes has rigged his omnitool to project a monetary total for everyone on the center of the table. At first, they had played for fake credits as none of them really have a lot of extra credits to spend. This had quickly devolved into other bets, such as promises of second best vibroblade knife from Vestus, extra dextro-protein rations, and, curiously, from Alzik, a promise of genetic manipulation of firstborn to be harder to kill.
Both Turians have been ruthlessly trading Alzik’s debt marker between them. Reyes would never have guessed that Kenax has had thoughts about having children—let alone a spouse, as he’d always struck Reyes as a Lone Ranger type—but evidently, it is something both Turians are deeply invested in.
A mini-Kenax will be a terror as a teenager—with or without a bit of genetic manipulation.
Reyes had just won a large pot that included the genetic bet marker and the vibroblade, which Vestus has stabbed into the counter from when he first offered it as a bet. Alzik, the traitor, has folded and is amusedly watching as the Turians stare Reyes down, trying to find his tells.
The only thing of value Alzik retains is the extra rations marker from Kenax, which is no great loss from Reyes’ point of view.
Reyes has a full house in his hand—three kings and two jacks. There is no way he is losing this hand, but he’s seriously debating folding because of the hostile competitive stares across the table.
However, where would the fun be in that? Reyes is no shrinking violet, and wrestling with Kenax might be fun. He adds the blade back into the pot. “Raise.”
It’s his co-pilot’s turn, call or raise.
Kenax waits two minutes, staring at Reyes and trying to make him reveal what’s in his hand. Vestus shifts restlessly in his chair but allows them to have a silent staring contest.
Reyes doesn’t let anything show on his face. He waits patiently to see what Kenax will do.
The Turian suddenly gives an enormous smile that is way too vicious looking before settling back in his chair in a lazy sprawl. “New marker to offer. Sexual favors of whatever variety winner chooses to claim.”
Kenax’s gaze on Reyes is positively gleeful. He might as well be calling out, ‘Bok bok, chicken’ as he taunts Reyes to come for him.
Whatever, fucker, Reyes thinks, showing no response even as the omnitool notes the new marker. Kenax still has a small reserve of credits he could have betted instead of making the ridiculous offer.
“What are we supposed to value that at?” Vestus asks, perplexed. “You’re not that good-looking for a Turian.”
“Reyes knows how to value a good time,” Kenax replies with a salty wink aimed at Reyes.
Annoyed now, Reyes motions for Vestus to bet but doesn’t verbally respond, letting his irritated stare speak for him.
Vestus, also now glaring at Kenax, pulls a second vibroblade which he stabs into the counter in approximately the same spot he’d stabbed the first one, making the blade stand up straight, the sharp edge dull in the artificial light. This knife is thinner, more wicked looking than the first, but they are obviously designed to be sold as a pair. “Raise.”
Drinking the last of his protein shake, Reyes arches an eyebrow at Vestus. “Your first best blade?”
Not turning his gaze from his fellow turian, Vestus replies in the affirmative. “They’re a matched set.”
The odds are in Reyes’ favor. There are very low odds of either turian having a hand that could beat his. He doesn’t think of Kenax that way and has no use for his bet. But it is the principle of winning at this point.
He wants to beat them.
It’s a personal fault that he’s terrible at giving in.
“All in. Don’t worry, Kenax. I’m a generous lover.” He purrs, trying to unsettle his friend.
They’re both playing chicken now, committed to a head-on collision.
Excited chittering from the Salarian surprises Reyes and draws everyone’s attention. Alzik is enjoying this way too much, and his eyes shine with amusement.
“Something funny?” Reyes drawls.
“No,” Alzik says with emphasis. “Continue, please. I have not seen such a game as this.”
Reyes returns his attention to the game.
Kenax has straightened in his seat at Reyes’ declaration of being all in and does the same. Reyes’ copilot then gleefully turns to Vestus, whose arms are crossed over his chest, crest flattened in frustration, and mandibles tight.
“All in,” Vestus agrees, calling it.
“Hands, gentlemen,” Reyes says as he carefully flips his cards to show his hand.
There’s an immediate groan of frustration from Vestus, whose hand, while good, is not as good as Reyes’. The security officer has two pairs, kings and nines.
Kenax, looking directly into Reyes’ eyes, gives him another exaggerated wink as he turns over his own cards.
A pair of Kings.
His copilot has been bluffing the entire hand.
Rolling his eyes, Reyes collects his winnings as well as his omnitool to put an end to the game as he’s cleaned them all out. His Tío would be proud of him.
The blade is a work of beauty, a slim, razor-sharp, tapered stiletto with a channel down the blade’s center that can be filled with the poison of the bearer’s choice. Reyes has only seen pictures of this type of knife while being briefed on missions that involved going to Omega. It’s an assassin’s weapon that will fit perfectly into the slots of Reyes’ workboots.
Why would Vestus have a blade like this concealed on him on a random walk toward the docks? Reyes’ instincts tell him there is more to both Turians than they are letting on, but they seem friendly so far.
His omnitool pings to ask where he wants to store the promissory note for sexual benefits. Reyes is hit by a bolt of inspiration for the perfect way to get revenge on Kenax for promising something so embarrassing.
“Vestus, as I’m taking such a beautiful set of knives off you, I must give you something in return.” With a few taps, Reyes transfers the sexual favors promissory note to Vestus. He then turns to Kenax, “I’m sure you’ll have no difficulty fulfilling the marker now that it’s been transferred to someone who will be more appreciative of your, ahem, charms.”
Both turians flare their crests in surprise, Vestus with dismay and Kenax with shock. They both try to argue ineffectually simultaneously but are interrupted by the intercom bursting to life.
