Motaro and Goro!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏 I don't think I've shared any mantis pics since I switched them to semi-bioactive tanks. There are natural guava leaves (which I used to scoop up aphids when my mantises were just little toothpick tip size!), dirt, rocks, reused sticks, rolliepollies, ground centipedes, decorative moss, but no live plants or special UV lighting. Here are some pics from when I just fed them! Motaro is the first two pics, Goro in the last. That camoflage is absolutely amazing! And the mantises are a lot happier being in tanks that are clear and rectangular. I think the 'eye-rubbing' behaviour they had was due to one of them being in a cylindrical enclosure, similar to how fishbowls disorient fish. So. Lesson learned for me. It was fine when they were smaller, but as adults, they needed more space. 🦗 I had the opportunity to buy two of the large critter carrier tanks, and the mantises are much happier and seem way more relaxed and entertained by all the pillbugs I put in there. They keep killing them and then not eating them because they don't taste great or the shell is too thick? But... just an FYI... if you get these tanks, make sure the lid fits before you buy it. I spent so long in the store trying on so many lids and none of them would fit around the rim of the tank part, so I said Fuck It, grabbed two pink lids, and decided to sand them down with my dremel. Gasteracantha sp - Yercaud Forest - India⁠ Females are 5–9 millimetres (0.20–0.35 in) long and 10–13 mm (0.39–0.51 in) wide. The six abdominal spine-like projections on the abdomen are characteristic. The carapace, legs and underside are black with white spots under the abdomen. Variations occur in the colour of the upperside of the abdomen: a white or yellow colour with both featuring black spots. A white upperside can have either red or black spines while a yellow upperside can only have black ones. Like with many other spiders, males are much smaller (2 to 3 mm long) and longer than wide. TW EYE INJURY INSECTS BUGS GORO!!!!!!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOURSELF!! 😠😠😠😠 I thought it might have been a piece of poo that got stuck while molting somehow, but now that he's hardened and I can look closer, nope! It's a full on puncture!! Idk what happened, since he shed overnight. I helped him wipe it with wet paper towel and he cleared off the scab, but is otherwise still in good spirits, I think, so hopefully it doesn't affect anything more than vision. 😢😢😢😢 I put him in the sunnier window while he was drying and he's super red under his neck which is cool. And the light sage green on part of his wings is really pretty.
