Motaro and Goro!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏 I don't think I've shared any mantis pics since I switched them to semi-bioactive tanks. There are natural guava leaves (which I used to scoop up aphids when my mantises were just little toothpick tip size!), dirt, rocks, reused sticks, rolliepollies, ground centipedes, decorative moss, but no live plants or special UV lighting. Here are some pics from when I just fed them! Motaro is the first two pics, Goro in the last. That camoflage is absolutely amazing! And the mantises are a lot happier being in tanks that are clear and rectangular. I think the 'eye-rubbing' behaviour they had was due to one of them being in a cylindrical enclosure, similar to how fishbowls disorient fish. So. Lesson learned for me. It was fine when they were smaller, but as adults, they needed more space. 🦗 I had the opportunity to buy two of the large critter carrier tanks, and the mantises are much happier and seem way more relaxed and entertained by all the pillbugs I put in there. They keep killing them and then not eating them because they don't taste great or the shell is too thick? But... just an FYI... if you get these tanks, make sure the lid fits before you buy it. I spent so long in the store trying on so many lids and none of them would fit around the rim of the tank part, so I said Fuck It, grabbed two pink lids, and decided to sand them down with my dremel. TW EYE INJURY INSECTS BUGS GORO!!!!!!!!! WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOURSELF!! 😠😠😠😠 I thought it might have been a piece of poo that got stuck while molting somehow, but now that he's hardened and I can look closer, nope! It's a full on puncture!! Idk what happened, since he shed overnight. I helped him wipe it with wet paper towel and he cleared off the scab, but is otherwise still in good spirits, I think, so hopefully it doesn't affect anything more than vision. 😢😢😢😢 I put him in the sunnier window while he was drying and he's super red under his neck which is cool. And the light sage green on part of his wings is really pretty. TW INSECT FEEDING PICS: CHINESE MANTIS VERSUS GIANT-ASS GRASSHOPPER!! CAN HE DO IT?!?! 🐜🐛🦗🦂 I keep forgetting to share these pics from like 2 months ago... I found a HUGE grasshopper when hunting for mantis food, and decided to give Motaro (F, L8, Chinese Mantis) the chance to take it down. And he did. Instantly. Before the grasshopper could even jump out of the cup. Those huge, powerful grasshopper legs were no match for the deathgrip of an adult mantis. RIP cute buggie. 💪💪💪💪 I also wanted to test how much of it Motaro would actually eat, since the grasshopper was BIGGER than Motaro. In the end, I had to actually pull away the last leg of the grasshopper because I could see that Motaro reached his limit, but was still going to try and stuff it in, and I didn't want to see my baby burst. I did make sure to check on him all the next day, too, and here I am about 2 months later, and Motaro just laid an infertile ootheca, so I feel good about giving him this grasshopper, (and about taking the last leg away - meaning, I didn't injure him by giving him this BIG opportunity.) 🥗🍲🥘🍖 It is truly amazing what these animals can do, (and it's fortunate for humanity that they are no bigger than our hands.) ... ☆~ Just doing mantis things ~☆ TW BUGS INSECTS WORMS 🦗🦗🦗🦗 Goro (L8) is sO PURBLE. HOW DOES HE DO IT. So many parts of him are like blue fading to orange, purple and maroon, hints of dark green in his leggies! Wild colouration on his abdomen, extra spikes on his arms, widdle prawn mouf, he is so cute! AND LOOK AT THOS WIDDLE WINGS COMING IN THEY'RE ADORBS LIKE LITTLE MUSHROOM FRILLS RN!! Can't wait to see them grow bigger. Motaro (not pictured) took his worm immediately, no need to break the skin, and is happily finishing it off rn. But Goro decided to be picky again and not take it. I'm going to leave the worm, alive, unpunctured, in Goro's tank and see if maybe the chopsticks were wigging him out, maybe he'll take it on his own. I did catch a picture of a defensive strike there, tho! He wasn't particularly offended by the worm, or me, and was just seeming to want to walk around and chill. (Motaro didn't even need to come out of the tank to take the worm, like he accepted it with open spikes. Prince Goro!! 💪💪💪💪 He shed to L6 last night!! Very purple on his back still! Weird how that happens, maybe it's the red lids on their containers? Or the dark wood in their tanks/table they're on? Who knows, but it's still cool that they vary in colour from the ones I released. Goro here, turns out, has 5 belly segments now!! (So he's a trans man after all lmaO.) Weird, how I was so sure he was going to be male because of how fast he grew. Still, the fact that he's the one who sheds first means the other two Bigge Bois are probably going to molt again any day now. TW INSECTS BUGS WORMS FEEDING TIME 🦗🦗🦗🦗 I just watched a movie called The Swarm where some locust farmer allows her bugs to eat her. And then I go to feed my mantises and during the tank cleaning, they do the usual strike when they didn't like me moving them... bUT WHEN I MOVED GORO, HE ACTUALLY WENT TO TAKE A BITE OFF MY FINGER 😭😭😭😭 I have no doubts these hunters could take down prey much larger than them. (Like this video I saw of a mantis taking down a lizard!) Goro let go as soon as I put him near the branches on his tank, but he was sure ready to try and gnaw off my calluses. Those spiked forearms will NOT let go if the mantis is determined enough, they're like little foxtail stickers. On the bright side, both Goro and Motaro readily accepted their mealworms from the chopsticks this time with no hesitation or need for puncturing the worms. [Pictured is Motaro, L8] I may be expecting them to go into a shed after this, so I'm not sure if I should feed them again tomorrow. Maybe something small like a fly? TW BUGS INSECTS MANTISES ONE OF THE BABBIES SHED ALREADY!!!! 🦗🦗🦗🦗 The shed is the vertical one in the middle of both pics - mantids shed by crawling downward out of their skin. You can see a mantis on the right that's a little lighter in colour (it's not just the lighting) and I suspect that he's the one that shed. They all hatched on April 28 (today is May 10) so they've been alive and growing about a week and a half!! (My estimated timeline based on what I looked up was 2 weeks before a first shed!) I'm guessing since none of the other babies shed yet, that the one that molted was the one that got "lost" but actually turned out to be one I had originally released since he would have been getting a lot of direct sunlight and outdoor heat all this time. (I definitely have 5 in there now!) I also suspect it must have been the one that kept running around in the tank yesterday full of energy compared to the others. I'm so proud of them, they're so fucking cute, I can't wait until they get big enough to handle. Prepare to fight!! 🦗🦗🦗🦗 I know everyone's probably sick of seeing my babbies, but idc, I love em. I gave them some plant time today on my tamarind plant for enrichment and only Goro seemed to like it today lmao. He's been the most friendly of all of them! Motaro is neutral to me, and Sheeva is extremely skittish and timid (so I may just avoid handling her to reduce stress.) Anyway, in order, here are Motaro (L6, female, he/him), Sheeva (L5, male, she/her), and Goro (L6, female, he/him) lol. 🦎 Funny how my prediction from L3 was completely opposite. All the reading material led me to believe that the males grow up so quickly, so I assumed because of Sheeva's small stature she would be female and surpass the Bigge Bois later, but turns out her small stature and slow molts meant that she's male. She's either a runt, or all the male ones are like this, so without a definite other male on hand, I cannot compare them. 🦗 Even harder to tell because my mantises came from Cali and I'm here in Cali, but reading material for this species is generic for everywhere in the US, so maybe it's just a regional thing, for the males to grow up slower than the females here (or maybe at the same rate). Regardless, it's good info to know, since I'll probably want to order another ootheca next year because they are too damn cute. 🐲 ((And it's too bad I don't think I can order a different species of mantid because of living in Cali with strict import/release laws. Maybe I can find a seller IN Cali and just order the individual mantises rather than an entire ootheca so I won't have to release them? Dinner time!! TW BUGS INSECTS 🐛🐛🐛🐛 A little while ago I kept seeing a Cabbage Butterfly fluttering around the potted plants and vegetables we have on the deck, and I said it's probably laying eggs. Sure enough, I went to water and saw a bright green caterpillar wiggling around on my mustard plant! A perfect snack for Motaro (L8, F, Tenodera sinensis). ((Also pictured: the unfertilized ootheca he laid a while ago...)) 🦗🦗🦗🦗 I was curious so I had to look something up, and thought I'd share it here. It's pretty common knowledge that many caterpillars are poisonous due to eating poisonous plants like milkweed - that's why some are brightly coloured with stripes. This is a deterrent to predation by other species... except praying mantids. Mantids will instinctively eat the caterpillar, and then discard the innards that contain poisonous plant matter, so they minimize the amount of toxins they ingest. Even still, some toxins are still present and absorbed into the rest of the caterpillar's body, but produce no adverse effects on a mantis. One study concluded that a varied diet (that included poisonous caterpillars) was ultimately more healthy for the mantises they studied. I don't think cabbage butterfly caterpillars are necessarily poisonous, but I've definitely seen my babies discard the stomachs of their large prey when I watched them. Gotta love that completely alien mantis anatomy. 👽👾☠👁 Earlier I was using the flashlight to find something to give Motaro (so I won't have to give up a Darkling yet), and got the idea to use the light to take some pics because my house has bad lighting, and all these pics I took are SO amazing and scary and dramatic, and perfect for Halloween. 🎃🎃🎃🎃 I'm also gonna need y'all to pray for Motaro tonight because I found this giant ass grasshopper again and gave it to him since he just laid eggs and needs to eat something nutritive... but he's so full already. Goro is also looking quite plump, so I couldn't give it to him. I let Motaro eat as much as I felt safe giving him, but then I couldn't wrestle the thing away without hurting him. I did rip off a hopper leg which I gave to Goro and he gladly took, and that helped ease the burden of size a bit, but the rest is going to all be in Motaro's hands, literally. So if I wake up to a dead mantis tomorrow I'm gonna be so upset. EGGS!!!! 🥚🥚🥚🥚 HOLY SHIT GUYS!! ( TW BUGS INSECTS EGG SACS ) So. This is Motaro. Motaro (F, L8, Chinese Mantis) has never met an adult male in his life. Motaro has been looking exceptionally bodacious over the past 2 weeks. And I'm so dumb. I really was out here thinking Motaro was pigging out on all the isopods in his tank, when it waS THE EGGS IN HIS ABDOMEN HE NEEDED TO LAY AND I FEEL CRUEL FOR NOT GIVING HIM BIGGER MEALS NOW WHEN HE COULD HAVE USED THE EXTRA ENERGY. I went to give him a snack, and saw some white stuff poking out of the lid and my heart dropped, I thought it was like death-vomit or something terrible, then I look closer and, no, it's EGGS. EGGS FROM MY VIRGIN MANTIS. IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE. ((Also, a nightmare because I do not want to struggle with caring for delicate babies over winter.)) But I'm even dumber cuz, turns out, it's quite common for female mantises to lay an ootheca, or even a few oothecae. Whether they found a mate or not, their body still makes the egg material, and they need to get rid of it somehow. Like menstruation, I guess. And as miraculous as I thought it might be, there's like a 99.9% chance they won't hatch anything (at least not that will survive past a day), since Chinese Mantises don't need to survive through self-cloning/parthenogenesis. (PHEW!) Still, this was a huge surprise to find IN PROGRESS. But also a little heartbreaking because Motaro and Goro are definitely getting old. And I will miss them when they pass this winter. For now, I'm gonna assume they're not eating the unpalatable isopods, and make the effort to get them full meals (and probably give Motaro one of the mealworms/now adult Darkling Beetles). MAKING IT ALL THE WAY TO L9 AND BEING SUCH A FIGHTER ALL THE WHILE!!!! I knew they were due to shed, so I gave them both a juicey waxworm the day before yesterday. Hopefully Goro will start to accept the mealworms/hand-fed more readily, since he's been so picky with anything I try to give him for all of the last shed. He had some kind of issue with his chitin at the abdomen-thorax joint all last shed, so I'm hoping that as long as he dries undisturbed, that the problem will be fixed. He looks sooo good though!!!! All crisp and white right now! Can't wait to see what colours come out when he dries!!
