a wonderful encounter with a Spiny Grass Mantis. mantids are really something special, it feels like there's a lot of intelligence and awareness about them (or perhaps I'm just anthropomorphising lol).
at any rate, she* was very patient with us as we fawned over her and took a ton of photos, before gently returning her to the fence to continue her prowl.
I especially love this photo of her foreleg, such wonderfully intense spines!
*I don't actually know how to sex mantids, my guess is based entirely on their short wings and generally large size. I welcome any corrections or tips on determining mantis sex!
Fast fast messy sketch of some mantids! Coloured! Featuring a praying mantis I found (photograph) and this silly guy (Rhombodera sp.)(the illustration) on iNat!
check out this little cutie i met last night 💕 he’s a male Carolina mantis, Stagmomantis carolina :) i always get excited to find one of these since usually i only find the larger nonnative Chinese mantises here in NC!
Today our kiddo and I were out enjoying nature. She said she’d never seen a live praying mantis. We went on a walk through the back acres to find some. Finding the first one was like “Where’s Waldo.”
Once we did though, then we saw them everywhere.
I showed her how to gently hold them so they don’t get scared (and I don’t get pinched).
These are all her photos of mantis friends we found.
Many Mantis!
_____
My partner and I own several acres in the Chicago burbs.
Instead of a McMansion and acres of lawn that look like a golf course, it is maintained as a nature preserve. It takes work to maintain the paths and beat back invasive plants.
When our daughter moved in, she wasn’t sure about all the nature, lol. Now, she has her own pumpkin patch.
She is kind to bugs and various creatures that make this land their home.
All the above photos are hers from our stroll today.

ps: Nail polish is for all genders!
My partner and I have both worn nail polish, and we let our kiddo paint our nails because it’s fun for all of us!

[ @onenicebugperday - I thought you might enjoy these big friends]
I wake up every morning and cry knowing I will never be as pretty as her.
The Spiny Flower Mantis
Family: Hymenopodidae
Scientific Term: Pseudocreobotra wahlbergi
This bitch. This is what I want to be if reincarnation exists. These mantises mostly live in parts of East and South Africa. The wings on their wings are used to scare away predators and appear bigger.
They aren't very active and stay mostly in one single spot for most of the day until prey comes by.
And, like almost every mantis species, the females are sexually cannabalistic.
They're my role model.
