A BEAUTIFUL adult male Northern flicker (yellow-shafted) I got to band a few days ago ❤️ I love these birds. Look at those gorgeous yellow tail and flight feathers. The black spots on the breast. The red on the back of the head. The moustachial markings identifying it as male. Their legs and wings are so strong. It's always such a treat to band these birds ❤️

This is a Gilded Flicker! i wanted to show you this little guy because they're really beautiful :] they've got bright yellow underwings, a cinnamon crown, crescent-shaped spots on their bellies. the males specifically have a bright red mustache stripe. these birds live in the Sonoran Desert, nesting the hollows of cacti, and pick bugs (mainly ants) from the soil.
they used to be called the same species as Northern Flickers, but were acknowledged as their own species when evidence showed hybridization was very limited. for comparison, here are pictures of Northern Flickers, one red-shafted and one yellow-shafted.

thank you for showing me omg!!! they are so pretty ur right!!
THE MALES HAVE MOUSTACHES LMFAO... LITTLE BUSINESSMEN...
they do look similar to northern flickers lmao! tbh that's what I thought it was at first, but they definitely have slightly different coloration now that I'm looking at the both of them fjehk, most notably on the head (though that could just be unique to the individuals, i have no idea LMAO)
i am cataloguing these lil guys to my brain rn omg... GOLDEN BABIES

Howdy!!! I just would like to say that all of your posts about the Xen creatures and flora are extraordinarily intriguing, and seeing them on my dash always makes me really excited. But oit of curiosity, are there any other interests you'd like to share? You seem like someone who'd have a lot of thoughts and interests, 'nd I'd feel rude pinning you to just one. Sorry if thats worded wrong or rudely at all! Again, love your work!
Oh thank you!! I'm really glad you enjoy them :]
Well I haven't done much since we have been stuck inside the entire time I've been in this system but a couple things I like to do or are interested in; is, trying to get memories back --often times talking about it or drawing it helps it stay in my mind or stay clear, as I hate- how amnesia feels? I don't know how else to describe it but it has a feeling-- I enjoy going out and collecting things such as rocks. I've been trying to re-learn a lot of physics and chemistry stuff since that's- been thrown out the window with the amnesia, as well as mostly just drawing :]
Here's some other hobbies and such of my headmates:
Nala may as well be an ornithologist at this point, they like to draw as well. Nala and I have also been working on a game that includes some stuff like speculative evolution, which we both very much enjoy --Nala has taught me a lot about birds but also when I first fronted on a walk with them I remember a bird flying over, and we hardly saw it then they just
" Male Red-shafted northern flicker, my mann wooo!! look at him go he's vibin" and now I know that it's a pretty common find here but still aqkfhgdbd
Barn hasn't exactly spent the most time in the body other than a couple drawings and talking rjrihejeb same for Dallas.
But yes, overall it's a lot of art and creature stuff, at least since I showed up and started fronting more.
If there is anything specific you would like to know, always feel free to ask ! Even if I get to it a little late rkerhejrb
And it's not rude at all!! Even though I couldn't manage to respond until now, each time I came back to this ask it got me very stimmy, I really appreciate it, and once again; I'm extremely glad you enjoy these posts!!!

There’s some new birds up in the birch branches! Red bellied woodpeckers, belted kingfishers and yellow shafted northern flickers! The kingfishers I love to see while kayaking and the other 2 are my backyard pals. Whenever we see a male red bellied we refer to him as Bernard. These 3 are now available with the rest of the pack in our Etsy shop. . . . . . . . . #forageworkshop #birdnerd #backyardbirds #lovebirds #birdmates #birdcouples #birdpairs #birdsofinstagram #birdwatchers #birdwatchersofinstagram #northamericanbirds #featheredfriends #🪶 https://www.instagram.com/p/CLMhW7yBQBF/?igshid=bprxlg30i5e0

A male red shafted northern flicker is a woodpecker. Their main food are ants and beetles, so you quite often see them forging on the ground. As a woodpecker they bang on things to not only forge, but also as a form of communication and territory defense. Because of this woodpeckers seek out objects that emit a loud sound when they are drumming. This northern flicker is a west coast bird sporting the red under plumage.
