[ID: two digital greyscale drawings of Jonathan Sims and Martin Blackwood from The Magnus Archives. Jon is depicted as a short, thin British-Pakistani man with many scars, and Martin is depicted as a tall, fat Vietnamese-Polish man with glasses.
Image 1 depicts Jon rescuing Martin from the Lonely in episode 159. Against a cloudy grey background, Martin, washed out, stands with his arms limp at his sides, looking vacantly aside. He is wearing a blazer. Jon wears an overlarge cardigan that fans out behind him as he reaches for Martin’s face with both hands. Many tendrils of negative space curl around Martin, and a few break over Jon’s legs and flow between his fingers.
Image 2 depicts the final moments of episode 200. Jon, unraveling into magnetic tape, floats in mid-air while Martin, standing on the ground, begins to drive a knife into Jon’s chest, cutting the tape. Blood rises from the wound, floating upward, the only color in the drawing. Jon gently touches Martin’s face and supports the arm holding the knife, while Martin sobs through gritted teeth and holds onto Jon’s wrist. The dark backdrop is lit by a beam of light behind Jon, which highlights the negative space between the ribbons of tape that compose Jon’s body. End ID.]
these drawings ended up being parallels of a sort so thought i would share them together for. maximum pain :,) if anyone’s wondering i’m still inconsolable about Them

mechtober day 8/9: idw g1 rodimus and ultra magnus!
i feel like rodimus is the kind of coworker you love to run into on your way to the coffee machine, unless you have a deadline, in which case you've gotta pretend not to see him so you can actually get back to your office in five minutes

I think i finally understand how the Distortion works. I mean, i don’t think it’s possible to ever fully understand it, and i don’t know the whole picture yet because i don’t know what Helen will be like, but i feel like i’ve just been granted a glimpse at the lovecraftian (as in ineffable) thing that is this being.
It’s not a person and a creature fighting inside one mind. There’s no Michael clawing himself to the surface to express his emotions and get his revenge.
Michael Shelley is dead. The Distortion became Michael. It sounds so simple, yet a least in my opinion it’s hard to fully understand.
I think what provides the best metaphor is a small thing the Distortion says after becoming Helen: "without a proper mind." The Distortion does not have its own mind. It’s only a what, but in order to really exist in this reality, it needs a who. It needs a body, but also a mind.
So if i understand this right, it’s like this: Michael Shelley is dead. His conciousness is not there anymore. And the Distortion got forced into that mind, an empty mind of a dead person. This doesn’t make it human, it’s still able to understand the impossible, it’s still the thing that was created to scare and kill. But in the mind it’s living in… the previous owner’s furniture is still there. It gets the dead person’s memories. It becomes Michael, in the sense that it has to be someone. Its existence got tied to being Michael, although Michael Shelley is dead.
When Michael got "emotional", that wasn’t Michael Shelley coming through. It was the Distortion grappling with the side effects of being someone - of living in a mind with all the memories and the human emotions that a human mind can’t fully turn off, even when the thing inhabiting it isn’t human at all.
The Distortion was Michael in the sense that it was thinking with Michael Shelley’s mind. When it became Helen, its consciousness, its being stayed the same, but it needed to adapt to this new mind. It could see clearer now, realizing that the windows of the previous house had been dirty, realizing that the wirings of the previous mind had driven it to do something that it actually didn’t want to do. The throat of the Spiral itself getting caught in the spiralling of its own, borrowed mind.

Something that compels me so much about Maglor/Luthien is that if you change Beren with Maglor, the quest for the silmaril becomes so much more juicy
Because, yeah, on one hand it's still a suicide quest designated to either make Maglor give up Luthien or die in the process of the quest, thus freeing Luthien.
But on the other hand, this is Maglor's family treasure he is asking as bride price (which also makes it an actually accurate as a bride price is supposed to be something the groom's family already has yk), Thingol is asking Maglor to give him the whole reason the Feanorians even left Aman in the first place, the thing Feanor died trying to re-take, the reason he has been fighting for years.
Not to mention that depending on how you decide to read the oath, Thingol is asking him to not only curse himself but his entire family for Luthien, asking him if a life with Luthien is worth eternal damnation.

MAG 1 - 'Angler Fish' - Jon's professional aggression.
It's highly notable that in his introduction to his first recording Jon is angry, stuck up, and incredibly defensive. In almost every sentence he exclaims his hatred, disappointment, and disapproval of something or someone. This level of aggression, presented under the guise of genuine academic concern is not in line with real aggression, but much more closely aligned to fear.
Jonathan Sims is scared. He's totally not qualified for the job he's landed himself in, he's creating an access mode into the archives for many future researchers, and he's got absolutely no idea how he found himself in this situation. He's backed into a corner and lashing out feels safer than settling down, but there aren't many ways to lash out and simultaneously keep your job.
Being snarky with Martin; hating the tape recorders; complaining about Gertrudes standard of work; it's all irrelevant when it comes down to it. The whole introduction pretty much sets us up for his failure, it's not so much an introduction as it is a premature excuse for future mistakes.
It's all so enamoured with that clunky, embarrassing, flushed feeling at the start of a new job where its all going wrong and you're totally sure you're gonna be sacked. He's already been unable to record statements to his computer, entirely quashing his plans for a digital archive, and there's already tension among his staff, probably making him feel like a totally inadequate boss!
What a way to start a job: inadequate, insecure, and totally aware of the reality of the supernatural horrors you try so hard to ignore.

a question for those who are totally normal, they promise, about Gerry Keay
could you please either reply to this post, or send me an ask, with patches/patch designs you think Gerry would wear on a pair of 'patch pants'? it's for science, ahaha. I'd be eternally grateful <3

MAG 90 BITCHES IT'S A TREAT DAY
ELIAS?? TIM????
HAHA YES TIM BE A BITCH TO ELIAS YESSSSSS
good for him take that unauthorised leave
oh god...that's what they mean by they can't leave...they get sick and i guess might die
the way elias knew that and made tim admit it and made him dwell on the fact that he cannot leave, under the guise of concern UGH
HE DOES KNOW TIM, YOU'RE RIGHT
"lose yourself in work" OH THAT BASTARD HE'S LIKE YEAH I KNOW UR FEELING LOST WITH ALL THE SERVING A FEAR GOD, HOW ABOUT YOU FEEL BETTER BY DOING MORE TO SERVE THE FEAR GOD
oh wait yeah why did he turn the recorder on? do you think he wanted to record his conversation with elias to make sure he wasn't imagining things? to have it on tape the effects of working at the institute? hmmm
has anyone headcanoned malaysian!tim cause that would be cool as well
I KNEW IT WOULD BE FUCKUNG JARED HOPWORTH
god this statement...honestly i didn't know how they were gonna make a gym spooky but man i think they pulled it off...
diversity win!! the guy who owns the gym likes men but you only know that cause his partner had a heart attack maybe from steroids!!
they really just said what if you trained at a gym alone and then you weren't...it was actually horrific many limbed creatures made from an unholy combination of human parts...oh and that the one other person you trained with has probably become one of those body parts
the whole stuff about the body dysmorphia did get to me though like yeah i definitely get the whole let's destroy ourselves to get the body we want vibes
LET THE MAN SAY FUCK HE DESERVES IT
the way that even after everything, he's still intent on doing his job and filling in for jon as if nothing has changed, he's still worried deep down that he'll do the wrong thing and get fired, like swear on tape
i guess its his whole hating change thing and probably a way of repressing and trying to keep going
he's good at smoothing things over and by god is he going to do that to this
"i know we're not meant to speculate" YOU'RE TELLING ME ALL JON DID WASN'T PART OF HIS JOB?? HILARIOUS. OH MY GOD
although i guess its scary that martin is speculating and falling into the Archivist like habits when he's recording the statements
its interesting to see that melanie is helping overall though, she is actually doing her job

okay now one thing that i'm thinking is that 1999 is The pivotal, important year... because it's the year of the infestation outbreak, right? when we got introduced to it i thought "yeah of course, the temporal ground zero for the technocyte plague"
it's at least something that isn't common knowledge, or doesn't have a foothold in the world yet. the biggest thing spoken about over the PAs is Y2K and new year's seems to just go off like new year's, and that kind of implies to me that arthur and aoi are in a place similar to hayden in darkSector - they're in the middle of a mission to stop the outbreak before it spreads, and albrecht is an important part of that.
of course with the added element of eternalism and accompanying themes of time travel, a theory i could throw at the wall to see if it sticks is, like. idk the infestation was brought back to 1999 from the future due to some orokin meddling? darksector isn't close-canon but the remark that the first instance of a warframe-like presence would have happened far enough in the past that it had no conventional bearing on the present day plot... yk, maybe like the turn of the 21st century...
