Film Double Bill: Phantom of the Paradise (Brian de Palma, 1974) / Legend of the Stardust Brothers (Macoto Tezka, 1985)

An eccentric pair of cult musicals about manufactured bands. Phantom’s Winslow Leach is a naive singer-songwriter whose work is stolen by a wealthy record producer and given to a much more television-friendly singer, while Stardust Brothers’ Shinga and Kan are singers in rival bands who are offered a deal - they’ll be turned into pop superstars, but only if they agree to be presented as brothers and keep a clean, teen-friendly image.

Stardust Brothers is explicitly influenced by Phantom, offering a special thanks to Winslow Leach in its credits. They share a colourful and creative approach to their visuals, and a dry and chaotic sense of humour.

They also both have songwriting and performances from music industry veterans who have decided to get biting about their decades of experience with producers - with Leach-esque songwriter Paul Williams as Phantom’s satanic record producer and sentimental ballad singer Kiyohiko Ozaki as Stardust Brothers’ sinister talent manager.
