This is for such a niche audience but Angus MacGyver and Neal Caffrey would either get on SO well or be the bane of each others existence they are so similar.

Either way if they teamed up they’d literally be unstoppable.

CHAPTER 1

“Suppose we ask Matty to send ‘em to AMOS,” Jack says. He’s leaning against Mac’s kitchen counter with his arms crossed, watching Mac lace up his boots. “You and I could go off on vacation for real this time. Or,” he added, seeing Mac’s look. “Or we could still go backpacking only, you know, with a tent and a few bottles of beer and some actual food.”

“If you want to drink beer why don’t you just stay home?”

“And let the three of you wander around in the wilderness alone?” Jack scoffs and doesn’t let the surge of anxiety he feels show on his face. “No way. If you’re dragging Riley and Bozer off for survival training I’m goin’ along to keep an eye on y’all. You know that.”

“You could stay at the cabin with Freddie. I’m sure he’d enjoy your company and there would be plenty of beer and actual beds. No roughing it, but you’d be right there in case we needed you.”

“Yeah, but you know how I feel about banjos, Mac.” Jack manages to keep a light tone, knowing Mac won’t press much harder for a real reason. “And I feel like you’re about to insult my hard-earned wisdom again with some crack about my age.”

Mac rolls his eyes. “Fine, suit yourself. I’m sure nobody minds listening to you complain all week. But this time you have to follow the rules, Jack. It’s survival training, not a luxury camp-out. You can’t bring a gas grill and air mattresses.”

“I know the rules.”

“Okay, Jack.” Mac stands up and hovers over Jack’s bag, which is leaning against the wall opposite the door. Jack already knows how this is going to go down. He’s planned for it. “So I won’t find any contraband if I just poke around in here for a minute?”

Jack took a swig of his beer and glanced at Mac from the corner of his eye. His partner had been quietly sitting and staring at the city lights for the last thirty-seven minutes without moving. They were on Mac's back deck, sitting in the Adirondack chairs he'd built while on medical leave early in his DXS career, enjoying a couple of beers. Well, Jack was drinking his, at least.

When Mac finally spoke, it was in his matter-of-fact, no-arguments tone. "I don't want to do this anymore."

Jack considered how best to respond. Honestly, he wasn't surprised by Mac's words, and he wasn't upset by them. They'd been at Phoenix, and DXS before it, longer than Jack had been at any job besides the Army. He decided to feel the situation out for a minute. "What's on your mind?"

"I've spent my whole life being manipulated by James, and I'm sick of it. I want out."

A mission gone wrong leaves Mac concussed with his ears ringing so loud he can't hear much of anything else. Good thing Riley and Jack are there to make sure he gets back to Phoenix in one piece.

The Whumptober for chapter 4 is alt prompt 7: Protective

CHAPTER 4:

Mac gets the sense that Matty had a word with someone at the hospital well before he arrived because he gets taken to a private room immediately. The amount of blood on his hands and clothing probably helps. Jack goes with him, and before the nurse is done checking his vitals, one of the tac team members who went with the chopper finds them. He leans down to speak in a low voice to Jack. Stuck lying on the room’s bed, Mac can’t hear the update.

Jack turns to Mac immediately. “Bozer’s in surgery. He lost a lot of blood but he was still breathin’ on his own when they got here. Medic says it could still turn out any which way.”

"What's going on in here?" Riley asked as she walked into the mess that had become of Mac's living room. There were books strewn across every surface, loose printed pages all over the floor, three laptops all open to webpages about plants, and about twenty coffee mugs among the detritus. The TV was also playing a black-and-white monster movie.

Bozer, leaning against the partition that separated the kitchen from the foyer, nodded in greeting. Then, he turned his attention back to the whirlwind that was MacGyver. "Our boy is doing a crash course on lycanthropy. Including all the movie versions."

"He looks like he's about to crash," Riley said with a fair amount of concern.

Mac's clothes were coffee-stained and disheveled. His hair was sticking up in all directions, and his eyes had enough baggage for extra fees at the airport.

"He's been like this since they got back from Italy."

"That was three days ago!"
