For the Maribat? Get In! Civil War 3 Prompt: Royalty @maribat-get-in
“And what is it that the beloved princess Marinette desires?” Dick asks, exaggeratedly placing a little plastic crown on his younger sister’s head.
She giggles, “I want to be as cool as Batgirl!”
Dick holds a hand up to his chest, offended, as Babs grins. The older girl kneels down so that the two girls are at the same level. Ruffling Marinette’s hair, she says, “You’re already as cool as Batgirl.”
And how can Dick feel offended when she looks at Babs with her big round eyes and asks, “Really?”
“Really.”
Marinette cheers and runs off. Something about getting a Batgirl costume. Babs looks up at him and sticks her tongue out, “I’m her favourite.”
Dick groans and falls back on to the couch. “I’ll win back her favour with Alfred’s cookies.”
She snorts, “Good luck.”

Nino and the Glaring Cats
Thank you to the people in my team who beta read for me!
“Uhh… Nino? What are you doing?” Adrien asked with clear confusion.
“Feeding wild cats, dude” exclaimed Nino, wearing a feral grin.
“While we’re in New York?”
“I feed wild cats in Paris all the time, M. Rancomproix isn’t as strict on feeding cats as he is on feeding pigeons and rats. If our class is going on this weird tour of the US because Principal Damocles and the mayor wanted to stop the “Akuma Class” label, then I’m going to feed some wild cats” Nino nonchalantly replied.
Adrien was torn between being happy at learning something new about his best friend or concerned that Nino might get himself killed one day by feeding wild cats in alleyways. In his worry, he never noticed that one of the cats had a camera.
“Nino, are you feeding wild cats again? We’re in Gotham!” questioned a bewildered Adrien.
Nino just shrugged, “Of course I am dude, I won’t be able to fulfill my daily hobby of feeding wild cats if I didn’t.”
“I-I see….”
There was a pregnant pause between them.
“...Hand me some of the food. We still have time before we have to return to the hotel and I’m not letting my best friend die while feeding cats in Gotham by himself,” resigned Adrien.
Nino placed a hand over his heart, touched, with tears in his eyes, “Bro…”
The Joker was ready to take over Gotham Museum. He set up a series of bombs ready to douse the whole place with laughing gas.
As soon as he was ready to set off the explosives and make a dramatic entrance, he was suddenly surrounded by cats.
“What the-”
One of the cats glared at the Joker before letting out a loud “meow!” The cats descended upon the Joker, who could only scream. At around the same time, a visiting class from Paris left the museum, blissfully unaware of the battle that was just around the corner, with one exception. The lone member of the group only smirked and walked towards the waiting bus.
When the Bats found the rogue hours later, he was unconscious. Blood poured out of the many, many scratches on his person. His clothes were torn and covered in blood, barely covering the deep cuts along his arms and legs. One of his eyes lay torn out and on the concrete. The system of bombs was nothing more than a pile of scrap.
“Here we are! In the great city that is Metropolis and… you’re feeding wild cats, aren’t you Nino” Adrien sighed.
Nino gave him a cheeky grin “You know it, dude!” He held up a bag of cat food.
“Right, hand some over, let’s go find some cats,” Adrien quickly grabbed the bag out of Nino’s hands.
He didn’t see the bag full of photos at the boy’s feet.
Superboy was feeling restless. He just came back from visiting Robin in Gotham where he was treated to one entertaining story about cats attacking the Joker. The day was rather mundane and he was itching for some action.
He flew through the sky on his patrol, only to stop before a rooftop curiously. A lone cat was sitting on top glancing down at the roads below. One cat became two, then three. Before he knew it, there were over a dozen cats on the rooftop.
A bit unnerved, he went to take a closer look only for all the cats to suddenly flip their heads towards him and glare.
“Nope!” Superboy screamed, flying away at top speeds, not noticing the stares of someone below.
The class was back in Paris, and Nino was rather bored. It was then that he received a text from his oldest friend. After staring at the text for a while, Nino quickly decided to speed up some of his plans.
Taking his phone, he sent out some messages and then went to grab Chris and tell his parents that he invited some of his classmates over.
“Chat Noir! What up my dude!” Carapace happily greeted the feline hero.
“Hey Carapace, how do you like being a permanent hero now?” the hero teasingly asked.
“Ha… it still feels weird” Caparace shyly scratched the back of his head.
“Well, come to me if you need any pointers. You’ll find that I’m a purr-ty good teacher” smiled Chat Noir.
The turtle hero only laughed. “Sure thing, Chat Noir. By the way, I picked up some macarons from Tom & Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie before patrol, want one?”
Chat Noir happily accepted the cookies, not noticing the growing smile on Carapace’s face.
When Ladybug told him of a secret aid she had among civilians, he was curious. When his lady told him that he got invited to join as a superhero ambassador, he was excited. Now all he felt was shock at the five members in this group.
“Do you have it?”
“Of course we do, who do you think we are? Code, if you would,” the young girl motioned toward her partner.
“Clue and I have compiled a whole list of photographic evidence as well blueprints of the mansion with notes on an off-book construction that seemed to have taken place some time ago” the boy quipped, handing over a thick file of papers.
The other boy took the file with a nod. “Good, Crown, what about you?”
The mentioned Crown, scoffed. “Everything is ready to be uploaded when you give the green light. Let the minions take care of it first, it’ll be all the much more entertaining. Are the minions fully trained yet, Clowder?”
“Trained and ready to attack,” Clowder smirked.
Chat Noir had wide eyes, quickly darting his head around the room.
“What the…” Chat Noir whispered under his breath.
“You’ll get used to it” the last remaining member, Clock, shrugged.
Class was rather peaceful for once.
“And then Damian gave me this expensive bracelet…”
“Nevermind,” Marinette sighed under her breath, not in the mood to call out Lila.
She had a date with Luka later, so she decided to spend her time making plans for that instead. Not to mention, her plans with Kagami after school and the talk with Nino during lunch about Adrien’s new Metropolis boyfriend. He seemed nice, but they wanted to be absolutely sure that he wouldn't hurt their best friend.
“-nette, -ari-, Marinette!” Alix screamed.
“Ah! Sorry Alix, what is it?”
“Just wanted to return the notes you let me borrow last week and see if I could commission a banner for my next race from ya,” Alix requested with a smile, passing a notebook to the young designer.
Marinette could barely see the loose paper tucked between the pages.
“Oh, thanks Alix and of course, when is it?”
No one took notice of the small exchange. Nor did they take note of Max’s mad scribbling and Chloe’s furious typing. And no one especially heard Nino’s phone ping as soon as Chloe hit send on her text.
Gabriel was frustrated. No matter how many akumas he made, he kept getting foiled by the annoying bug and mangy cat. They got new allies too which only made his job harder.
“Natalie, did you make sure Adrien went to the photoshoot today”
“Of course, sir. Vincent said he’ll send over the results once he is done filtering through them, there seems to be quite a few discarded photos this time around” Natalie replied sternly, flipping through the schedule and emails on her tablet.
“Meow”
Gabriel and Natalie turned to find a cat standing in the middle of the office, completely black with piercing green eyes. The cat’s eyes narrowed at the two, not blinking, into an ominous stare.
“Natalie, why is there a cat in my office”
The woman was confused and a little scared, “I’m not sure, sir, I will have security remove it immediately.”
The cat was removed, only for another one to appear. Then another one, then another. Every time one cat was removed, another one would appear, each staring at the pair with unblinking eyes.
Gabriel soon had enough and ordered his security team fired for incompetence in allowing so many cats to enter the office. If all the fired employees soon found themselves jobs at Style Queen, no one mentioned it.
Adrien received some of the most shocking news of his life. “You want me to … what?!”
“In order to boost your image, I have decided it is better for you to start dating Lila Rossi. She is an upcoming model in our brand and therefore I feel that it would be beneficial to both of you.”
“But, I already am in a relationship.”
“I was not aware of such a thing. Who is it? If they are worthy I will let you continue seeing them, otherwise I expect you to break it off immediately.”
Adrien was hurt. He knew his father would immediately tell him to end the relationship if he knew who Jon was. Swallowing his dread, Adrien was ready to reply before a dozen cats fell from the ceiling, and another dozen rose up from underneath the floor that Adrien didn’t even know could move. They all started attacking his father.
Natalie and the gorilla quickly went to help his father, but Adrien could only stare frozen in shock. He recognized those cats.
The police and animal control arrived and his father was rushed to the hospital. All the cats were caught, and Adrien was afraid they would be put down, but Officer Roger assured him that the cats were going to be fine. They were just going to be monitored for a few days. That confused the boy, but he decided to accept the answer.
Another shock came when tons of documents and statements against his father for child abuse and unethical work practices were uncovered online and across multiple news sources while he was in the hospital. Then he received a message from Ladybug, saying that the civilian group had discovered some incriminating evidence towards Hawkmoth’s identity.
“It would seem that Hawkmoth is Gabriel Agreste” Code informed Chat Noir.
The superhero in question was reeling. There were photos of Hawkmoth’s lair within the Agreste mansion. His mother was there too, encased in some kind of coffin. Ladybug was tense beside him, her face pale. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Clowder clenching his fist and Crown glaring at the photos in disgust.
“How… how did you get this,” he choked out.
“Some of the cats found it while they were infiltrating the mansion. We called both you and Ladybug right afterward,” Clock solemnly stated.
Chat Noir couldn’t take it anymore and broke down.
“Chat!” Ladybug yelped in alarm.
It was over. With Gabriel Agreste still in the hospital for his wounds, the miraculous team had time to speak with law enforcement officials, recover the missing miraculous and arrest the man as soon as he was discharged.
Chat Noir, now Adrien turned to his friends. “So what exactly is all this?”
“Oh Adrikins, we’re Paris’s Glaring Cats. A group that takes down the lowlifes using cats. I make sure none of the little minions get put down for the stuff they do and handle all the media call outs,” Crown, aka Chloe, replied completely smug.
“Max and I are in charge of investigations and gathering evidence against our targets. Alya doesn’t realize how much information I’m actually getting while I’m out making deliveries,” Clue, Marinette, smirked, “Becoming Ladybug just happened suddenly and I wasn’t sure how Chat Noir was going to react until Nino, as Carapace, made a move.”
“Affirmative, we have all known each other since we were young and had found that we work rather well together, so we established a group centering around Nino’s remarkable ability to train cats,” Code, now known as Max firmly mentioned with a smile.
Adrien stared incredulously. “Alix?”
“Someone had to make sure these lunatics didn’t kill someone with the cats. Clock was the surveillance member who ran information around and misdirected anyone who was catching on,” explained Alix with their arms crossed.
Adrien was even more bewildered. “Nino?”
Nino laughed. “Well, dude, I, as Clowder, feed and train cats to attack people. Cats are smarter than you think dude. We even started an international branch during that trip around the US. We even got Catwoman and Green Lantern in on it.”
“That’s why we were feeding cats throughout the entire trip!”
“Yup! Now onto the more important matter, these are our next targets.”
Nino slammed down two photos. One was a picture of Lila giving Adrien a kiss on the cheek. The other photo was a picture of Jon from his last visit to Paris.
“No one harasses my best friend or bullies Nettie on my watch. And as for the farm boy, well let’s just say he needs to be properly warned about what happens if he breaks Adrien’s heart.”
The rest of the group only nodded along, already plotting. Adrien on the other hand was conflicted on whether he should be touched, embarrassed, or horrified. He decided on being all three before joining in the discussions on how to take down Lila.

Phoenix Villains Snippets.
{MGI Civil War 3 Event}
{Play With Fire}
———
Word Count: 853.
———
Marinette watched as the fire danced between her fingers and around her hand as if playing with her. It seemed so harmless like this, so different to roaring inferno burning the village around her to the ground.
This is what they deserved for hanging her parents under the accusation that they had set their own bakery alight. As if they would ever so recklessly endanger their sole livelihoods like that? It was sickening.
Her eyes, usually such a clear, crystal blue, gleamed gold in the lights of the flames. Why shouldn't she burn this place to the ground, and rejoice in the ashes? They'd taken everything from her. Her parents, her livelihood, her future...
Why shouldn't she take away theirs? There were no innocents in this. No one had said anything as the guards held her back, as she screamed and sobbed as two kind, gentle people gasped and choked for air.
It hadn't been a beheading. It hadn't been quick. Marinette wondered who pulled the strings to make it that way.
She'd burn them. The scent of charred skin was already becoming familiar enough.
Ashes choked the air. Good. They deserved to know how her parents had felt, desperate for air yet unable to breathe.
The crackling of bodies and buildings burning was loud, but not loud enough to disguise the crunch of soft footsteps against death baked soil, followed by the near silent swish of a cape.
“You're here to stop me.” She muttered hollowly, gaze not wandering from her flickering flames.
“What makes you think that?” An unfamiliar accent responded. “Maybe I'm here to join you.”
She snorted. “You're a Bat. Are you not? Bats stop that which they believe to be injustices.”
He chuckled. Against her will, she turned to look at him.
Poison-green eyes gleamed in the roaring fire's light. ... Perhaps this one was on her side. Still.
Best to make sure.
A man stumbled out of the wreckage, eyes wild, nearly out of his mind from pain.
"Please," he said, "Please save me. I can't -- I'm not -- I'm a good man, I promise, please --"
Marinette tilted her head at him. "Save you, hm?"
The Bat brushed ashes off his shoulder and nodded his head at her, as if to say, 'Go on.'
"Who saved my family?" she asked the man, and saw no recognition in his eyes. "Who saved Tom and Sabine Dupain-Cheng?"
"Make it stop!" the man pleaded again. Marinette tsked and threaded a soothing hand through his hair.
He sobbed, going lax under her hand.
She tightened her grip and yanked his head up. "Wrong answer."
The scent of burnt hair and charred, cooking flesh filled the air.
"Efficient," the Bat said, as she tossed the body to the ground. "Screaming was a little inconvenient, though."
Marinette gestured at the carnage around her. "Convenience wasn't exactly my goal, here."
He snorted. "Sure, it's not now. But later? It will be."
Sending a glance at him through the corner of one eye, she caused the fire to ripple and writhe around her hand and to rise from the ground, licking at the air around her boots. Casting her in a brilliantly searing glow.
She hummed, closing her eyes for a brief moment as she breathed in the scent of smoke. “And, what do you exactly propose that later will require my goal to change to one of convenience?”
The Bat sauntered closer. “Awww, c'mon. Don't tell me this is your one and only grand plan? To burn one little village to the ground and then what? Let yourself get captured by a Bat?”
“You sound so certain that I wouldn't fight back.” She pointed out. “And yet you saw what I just did to the waste of life.”
“You didn't immediately try to attack me.” The Bat countered.
Marinette hummed.
“I could help you, if you were to so wish it.” The Bat offered, a teasing lilt to his tone, eyes glimmering not unlike hers as he watched the flames swirling around her.
“I have other targets.” She admitted. “Not everyone responsible was here tonight.”
“Then,” The Bat started, moving even closer, unphased by the risk of burning, “let's enjoy tonight, the other Bats, Ladybug and Batgirl specifically, won't arrive til overmorrow at the earliest. Afterwards, we can begin making moves towards our next targets.”
She nodded, lips uncurling into a feral grin. “That sounds a wonderful plan.”
The Bat bowed. “The name's Jason.”
“Marinette but I think Phoenix is a little more fitting for the both of us now, don't you think.” She answered.
“Oh, I agree.” He reached one gloved hand out towards her. “To the start of a beautiful alliance.”
“To the start indeed.” Marinette clasped his hand, flames dancing and playing harmless around them both.
———
"What," Steph said, "The fuck."
She was staring at a heart burned into the ground. A perfectly-shaped, coal-black heart. That was somehow gouged into the cobblestone road.
Cass hummed. "Not natural, Ladybug" she said.
Steph spluttered. "Not -- not -- NO DUH! Batgirl! What -- "Cass's giggle cut her off. Steph pouted.
"Unfair," she mumbled, "You're so mean to me."

WORD COUNT: 52; Selina & Adrien & Batgirls
“Shhhhh, kitten, shhhhhh. I’m here now. It’ll be okay.” When Selina Kyle set out to explore Paris (and perhaps steal a gem or two), she hadn’t expected to steal a child, too. Still, she wasn’t complaining. (It got the Batgirls off her back, she’d claim later. Especially the loud, annoying one in purple.)

INTRODUCTION
The Story
The World of Neo-Amerika In the not-too-distant future, the mighty country known as America has
fallen like all great empires throughout history. Its fifty states broken into private territories after what was called… The Techno-Industrial Civil Wars. Computer technology, bio-engineering, cybernetics and mechanics accelerated at such an incredible rate, it forced industrial competition to the point of uncontrollable and ruthless corporate espionage. While the government tried to keep control of the country by a single thread, the effect of the giant corporations' white collar wars drove the economy into a tail spin. With Wall Street in shambles, the government bankrupt and technological corporate giants running unorthodox takeovers, Neo-Amerika was born. Starting with Micro-Gene, a Dallas based microchip / bio engineering company, New Mexico was easily annexed by the construction of more micro-chip processing plants and cloning technology labs. Arizona was the company's next target and by the time Micro-Gene moved in on Nevada, things started to get ugly. Micro-Gene had been using enhanced agents to spy, sabotage and gather information on competing companies, but other competitors began fighting back with their own brand of genetically enhanced corporate spies and agents. These wars between giant corporations a.k.a. "GI-Corps", gave way to more complicated, advanced and unethical methods. The kidnapping of corporate executives and replacing them with clones capable of downloading company secrets was becoming commonplace. Soon, murder and terrorist tactics became tools of choice in the battle between the GI-Corps. With the advent of the GI-Corps battles, each State developed desperate measures to secure themselves from a hostile take-over. By declaring Federal independence from the U.S., drastic laws and borders were created between states. Violence soon reared its ugly head and the Techno-Industrial Civil Wars began. Something had to be done before the once great country destroyed itself or became target to outside invasion. An agreement had to be made between the government and the GI-Corps before America was torn apart. So a radical concept was introduced to prevent the possible loss of millions in the increasing wars between GI-Corp controlled states. Thus…
The Secret Games Commission (SGC) Spearheaded by forces unknown (possibly foreign interest), a commission
was set up in league with the remaining U.S. Government to regulate the piracy that was tearing apart the United States with the hopes of possibly re-uniting the once proud country. The SGC and the American Government put forth a proposal to the GI-Corps: territorial or contract disputes would be settled in an arena. Instead of armies, one champion would represent a GI-Corp controlled state in battle against another corporation's champion. The winning Champion would take control of the opposing state along with whatever other states that may have been acquired from previous battles.
The Coming of the Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. The first unified law in decades was passed and the concept of
one-on-one battles settling GI-Corp disputes became a reality. As a matter of fact, the creation of ultimate fighting machines was inevitably the next step in the industrial world of Neo-Amerika and its civil wars. Each GI-Corp jumped at the opportunity to create these warriors from technology they specialized in. Cloning had become an easy task for the science divisions of the corporate states. Enhancement by genetics and cybernetics were available technologies as well. Born from these scientific secrets were: Biological Flying Robotic Enhanced Armored Killing Synthoids. Bio F.R.E.A.K.S. for short, these enhanced humans were created specifically for the purpose of battle. Bred in laboratories as killing machines, the Freaks were genetically endowed with peak strength and agility, a rapid healing factor, body tissue regeneration and built-in weaponry. They are owned by the GI-Corps and controlled through a bio-drive that also allows them to down-load combat skills and strategies. An intricate tattoo of circuitry gives them access to the bio-drives, which are located in each Freak's skull. There are three stages of Freakdom:
Synthoids: Genetically enhanced clones with tissue regrowth abilities. Retros: (as in retro-fit): One flaw in the Freak creation process is that the tissue regrowth abilities will fail after a while. If a body part is destroyed and the regeneration processes has discontinued, cybernetic replacements are attached to the Freak. Dozers: These are freaks who have not only lost so much of their human tissue but also the ability to regenerate. Their bodies are completely mechanical save for the brain. Closed-circuit battle pits are where all the action takes place. While
more reminiscent of Roman gladiators than a football game, the states' populace savors the conflicts with crazed fervor. While the whole world watches the fights in frantic anticipation, there are those who do not enjoy the rigorous battles faced far too often the Bio Freaks themselves.
The Freak Underground or GI-Corp Resistance Not having any government of corporate sanctioned rights, being under
constant control of a GI-Corp, doomed to a destiny of violence and ultimate loss of humanity, some Freaks have gone rogue and formed an underground resistance. Their goal, to escape the control of their "owners" and obtain their equal rights. While the Secret Game Commission's ultimate goal is to re-unify America, the possibility of a GI-Corp Resistance interferes in some of their most important progress. If an underground movement becomes successful and all Freaks go rogue, then a swift relapse to the days of the Civil Wars is possible and the hopes of peace could be crushed.

Freak classification: Synthoid_ Bullzeye has been around for years and was bred so well that he still hasn't had to have a cybernetic replacement grafted onto him. He was originally created as a prototype soldier clone by Micro-Gene and has since fought many times in the Battle Pits. Bullzeye is a survivor. He has a very militant attitude and relishes in the prospects of victory. Bullzeye has a special connection to an ambassador of the Secret Games Commission and is convinced that the games are the only way to re-unify Neo-Amerika. While his only purpose is to serve as a champion, he feels his mission is worth the risks he takes at each conflict. MINATEK
Freak classification: Dozer_ The Freak known as Minatek was one of the first Synthoids created by Micro-Gene for the battle pits. He helped them win Kentucky and Illinois at one time. Throughout the many battles, his regeneration qualities disintegrated and he was enhanced with cybernetic weaponry. He is one of the oldest champions and just before graduating to Dozer status, was purchased by Missouri where he was further altered by Anhieser Robotics Co. While nearly invincible due to his state of the art armor and weaponry, Minatek secretly wishes to join the underground after the traumatic procedures he's experienced. He serves as a reminder to some Freaks as what will eventually happen to them as they continue service in the games. Minatek has been reprimanded several times after bio-drive scans showed that he was thinking of going rebel. Anhieser Robotics Co. is currently working to perfect a free-will nullifying bio-drive, but because of Micro-Gene's accomplishment with Sabotage, they've been beat to the punch.

PSYCLOWN
Freak classification: Synthoid_ Psyclown battles exclusively for the State of Illinois. He was created by a small but quickly growing cloning lab called Duplications Unlimited, a subsidiary of the state's largest GI-Corp, Chicago TechNetics. Psyclown's bio-dive programming purposely keeps his adrenaline supply in a state of constant flow and regeneration. His senses are so enhanced that, paired with the adrenaline rush, he's on the edge of sanity. While it is commonly known that Psyclown is a clone, there is a rumor in the inner circles of the underground GI-Corp Resistance that he's a direct clone of the dead son of Duplications Unltd.'s CEO. In the midst of his prevailing hyper insanity, Psyclown has allowed enough of his mind to carry a goal: to ultimately punish the man directly responsible for his creation and the creation of all Duplications Unltd. clones, D.U.'s founder and CEO.

PURGE
Freak classification: Retro_ Purge is champion of the games created by NewCell Incorporated in close association with their PyroTechnique division. NewCell's bio-drive's have had the best track record of all the GI-Corps so far. Purge never was a straight synthoid to begin with. His cybernetic attachments were grafted just after his "birth." Purge represents Utah which was quickly taken over by Micro-Gene's rebellious subsidiary, NewCell. This created an incredible rivalry between Texas and Utah. Micro-Gene has tried to battle for the right to own Purge since he was created with proprietary information that NewCell stole when they broke away and purchased Utah, but the Chief Games Commissioner has not recognized any claim to him. Purge is one of the fiercest Freaks because of his high intellect and loyalty to the games. He has a Kamikaze sensibility programmed in him and that lack of fear has worked against many an opponent.

Freak classification: Unknown_ Sabotage is a hired mercenary-bounty hunter currently working for the Chief Games Commissioner, a public face for the Secret Games Commission. She has been hunting ZipperHead and other known rebels for sometime. She is a rough, tough, agile and focused on her targets. Sabotage's background includes a two year service with the Nevada-California State Conglomerate Police Force where she was legally enhanced for the Violent Crime Department. After her term ended, she was hired as a freelance agent to catch True-Breeds (people who illegally enter conflicts with Freaks) and rogue Freaks. What Sabotage and the player doesn't know is that she's an advanced prototype synthoid made by DNA Advancement Laboratories. In a twisted sort of way, she is blood with her fiercest opponent, ZipperHead.

SSAPO
Freak classification: Retro_ Ssapo was a secret attempt by an underground renegade faction of New Mexico to create a champion that would give them freedom from the Texas Annex. The cloning procedures were expected to produce the most fierce champion ever, a creature with the killing advantage: limb shredding teeth, incredible strength, skull crashing hands and super speed. The monstrosity was further enhanced with cybernetic weaponry. When finished, the scientists thought it looked like a toad because of its odd features and green skin, thus the Spanish name Ssapo was given to the creature. While Ssapo's intellect is not very high, the bio-drive in his skull is all he needs to battle as moves and skills are downloaded into his neural path, another first for the small group of rebel scientists. Ssapo was granted admission into the games and New Mexico won its independence from Micro-Gene's Texas Conglomerate.

ZIPPERHEAD
Freak classification: Retro_ ZipperHead was a synthoid champion whose career came to a drastic turn after a battle with Bullzeye in which he lost both hands and forearms. He was then moved to Retro status with the addition of cybernetic weaponry replacing his lost tissue. Knowing that the next step of evolution for a Freak was to eventually become a Dozer, ZipperHead experienced a breakdown and vowed revenge on Bullzeye and the system that created him. He ripped out the bio-drive in his skull, freeing himself from the influence and control of the GI-Corp that owned him. He then went underground. ZipperHead was originally a manufactured soldier by one of Micro-Gene's biggest competitors, DNA Advancement Laboratories. Their first prototype models experienced bio-drive complications, with a faulty drive often leading to independent thought. ZipperHead's rebellious actions have been blamed on this imperfection, but DNA Advancement Laboratories has improved their drives immensely since ZipperHead's high profile folly.

CLONUS
Freak classification: Unknown_ Clonus is the creation of the biggest, most successful GI-Corp in the North-American continent, Edisson Extractions. Clonus is the sole creation of Edisson Extractions' founding father and Chief Scientist, Professor Raymond Deux. Thus far, the professor is the only one who knows the secret behind Clonus and its abilities. This entity has the ability to mirror any opponent's physical form and abilities. The opponent finds him or herself facing an exact duplicate, ultimately succumbing to Clonus's incomprehensible ability to not only duplicate, but defeat them in battle.
MUTILATOR
Freak classification: Dozer_ This Freak has been in the battle pits long enough for her to become the most heavily enhanced warrior of all. A literal juggernaut among the others, Mutilator is a walking army with her chest cannon, missile launchers, wrecking ball and other gruesome yet effective weaponry. Mutilator was bred specifically for the purpose of experimenting with cybernetics and has had virtually all organic matter replaced by machinery over the course of her many battles with the exception of her brain. What is left of her mind is under the tight control of a small inner circle of scientists and corporate executives at MicroGene.

The Real Northwest Champs
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hey everybody, we’re back with another hypothetical trophy game. We move back out West to crown the real champions of the Pacific Northwest. I think there should absolutely be a trophy exchanged between the four FBS schools in the Northwest. To a certain extent they all consider each other rivals, the State of Oregon has the Civil War and Washington has the Apple Cup, and the Ducks and Huskies have their own high profile rivalry. Even if you wouldn’t call Oregon-Washington State or Oregon State-Washington real rivalries (and many wouldn’t), it goes without saying that each of the four schools measure themselves against the others.
For long stretches of time, many people have overlooked the football played out in the furthest flung corner of the Lower 48. They’re missing out on some great stories and fascinating local culture. I’m here to shine a light on it.
So, I’ll be using the same rules that governed the Kings of California trophy. The trophy goes to whichever team has the best record among the three. Two-way ties will be broken by head to head wins if applicable. Three-way ties will be broken by the team with the best conference record. This shouldn’t really be an issue because for the most part the foursome have all been in the same conference for all of their histories.
Oh yeah, and check out the other posts as well if you’re interested: Florida Cup, Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, Beehive Boot, Michigan MAC Trophy, Big Ten West, the Kings of California, the Cal State Champs, and Tobacco Road
-
The Early Days: 1894-1916
Football came to the Pacific Northwest in 1889, when the University of Washington fielded its first football team. They were quickly followed by Oregon Agricultural College in 1893 and then both the University of Oregon and Washington State College in 1894.
The first game played between any of these teams was the a meeting between Oregon and Oregon Agricultural College in 1894, a 16-0 win for the Aggies. It was the beginning of the most played football rivalry west of Texas. Oregon Agricultural would then play Washington in 1897, and the rest of the series began being played soon after that.
The Apple Cup was first contested in 1900, as was the soon to be Oregon-Washington rivalry. By 1903, all four Northwest schools had played each other at least once, though it would take another decade before the Oregon-Washington State and Oregon Agricultural-Washington series would be played on a semi-regular basis.
Early on, the Oregon schools beat the Washington schools more often than not, but it really is hard to say who was qualitatively better when only two or three games was played between those teams in this era. That all changed when Gil Dobie was hired by Washington in 1908. The former North Dakota coach turned Washington into the powerhouse of the Northwest. For the next decade Washington dominated all comers. From 1908 to 1916, Washington went an incredible 58-0-3, going 9 whole seasons without a loss.
It truly is a shame that football in the Northwest wasn’t taken that seriously. Despite all of this success, Washington was never considered for a national championship, but Dobie had laid the groundwork for Washington to be the traditional powerhouse in the region. Gil Dobie left following the 1916 season, going to Navy for a few seasons before ending up at Cornell, where he would lead the Big Red to three national championships in the 20′s.
It took some time, but the Northwest schools would eventually become respectable enough to found a major football conference. The Pacific Coast Conference began play in 1916, featuring Washington, both Oregon schools, and California. In time it would grow to be the premier league west of the Mississippi. Washington won the PCC in its inaugural season, though Oregon won the Northwest Cup by tying their rivals to the North.

Northwest Cup Champs
Oregon: 10 Washington: 9 Oregon State: 2 Washington State: 2
In the early days, Oregon got the better of Oregon Agricultural for the most part and that was really all it took to be ahead in these standings. Before 1900 there wasn’t too much mixing between the schools. As things began to heat up a the turn of the century, Washington became the dominant team in the region.
Washington would win seven consecutive Northwest championships from 1908 to 1914. They didn’t win in 1915 because they didn’t play any of the teams in the running. With the departure of Gil Dobie in 1916, all four colleges began competing on a much more even playing field.
-
The PCC Years: 1917-1954
The Pacific Coast Conference expanded rapidly, adding Washington State and Stanford in 1917 and 1918 respectively. In their first ever year in play, Washington State won the conference by sweeping their Northwest brethren under head coach Lone Star Dietz. The Northwest was pretty dominant in the early years of the conference. Oregon and Washington tied for the league title in 1919, though the Webfoots won the head to head and the Rose Bowl berth as a result.
This Northwest’s time leading the PCC ended abruptly in 1920. If you recall back to my Kings of California post, you’ll recall that in Cal won their first of four consecutive national championships that year. Stanford followed suit winning a national title in 1926. USC, who joined the league in 1922, won three national championships from 1928 to 1932. The Golden State took control of the league and held a stranglehold on it for decades.
Back in the day, the Northwest contingent of the PCC actually included both Idaho and Montana, who joined in ‘22 and ‘24 respectively. I had considered including them in the standings but those schools basically never mattered. The Vandals and Grizzlies almost never impacted the standings, with the those teams usually going winless in league play until they faced each other towards the end of the season.
With the state of California dominating the PCC, the Northwest schools were mostly left to their own devices. None of them were able to really build their programs into anything formidable, and mostly had to wait until the California schools (which began to include UCLA from 1928 onwards) were in down periods.
Washington went undefeated in 1925, winning the PCC between Cal’s last national title and Stanford’s first. The Huskies went to the Rose Bowl and lost to Alabama 20-19, just barely missing out on their first national championship. UW was still regularly better than their rivals at this point, but not by a significant margin.
As the 1930′s rolled around, the California dynasties all fell off, opening up a window for the Northwest schools to win the PCC. Washington State won a conference title under longtime head coach Babe Hollingberry in 1930. The Cougars were stomped by Alabama in the Rose Bowl. The Oregon Webfoots tied with Stanford and USC atop the league standings in 1933, but weren’t selected to go to Pasadena. Washington returned to the Rose Bowl after winning the league in 1936 but they were blanked by national champs Pittsburgh.
Oregon State won their first PCC title in 1941, going 8-2 with a win over Duke in the Rose Bowl. World War II disrupted football in the Northwest as every school but Washington shut down their programs in 1943 and 1944. When the war was over and GI’s came streaming back to college, the Northwest began to raise their game.
Oregon won a league title in 1948, but they were passed over for the Rose Bowl again, this time in favor of Cal. The Webfoots were given a spot in the Cotton Bowl as a consolation but lost to SMU to finish 9th in the polls.

Northwest Cup Champs
Oregon: 21 Washington: 18 Washington State: 13 Oregon State: 7
The PCC years meant two things for Northwest football. The first is that they were largely irrelevant in the national sense. None of the teams were able to really compete for national titles, and rarely did any of them win conference titles. The second aspect is that within the four Northwest schools, there was never any one dominant team.
Oregon State was the only school to win more than two Northwest Cups in a row in these three decades, and that streak itself only lasted three years. Washington State, arguably the least successful of the four teams in this span, won 11 Cups.
-
Jim Owens vs Oregon State: 1955-1974
After decades of stagnation, several things seemed to happen all at once. The first is the return of a hierarchy in the Northwest. In 1955, former UCLA assistant Tommy Prothro came to Oregon State College and turned the Beavers into the premier team in the region, well, for a few years. OSC won back to back PCC titles in 1956-57. It was the only time any school from the Northwest won consecutive league titles in that league. The 1957 title was split with Oregon, but the Beavers won the head to head and went to Pasadena.
In 1957, former Texas A&M assistant Jim Owens was hired to become Washington’s head coach. It took Owens a few years to get things rolling in Seattle but he turned the Huskies back into the powerhouse of the Northwest.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Coast Conference was falling apart. A corruption scandal rocked the league, which dissolved in the spring of 1959. Football in the Pacific Northwest was shaken by the swift collapse. The California schools took the opportunity to cut out some dead weight and reformed a new league, the Athletic Association of Western Universities, which only included themselves and Washington. Both Oregon schools, Washington State, and Idaho were cut loose and became football independents. Montana had left the PCC in 1950 after decades of losing.
UW were the first ever champions of the new AAWU. Jim Owens’ Huskies went 10-1 in 1959, beating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl to finish 8th in the country. Washington repeated the feat in 1960 with the same 10-1 record and a victory over #1 Minnesota in the Rose Bowl. The Huskies had a good claim for a national title, but the AP and Coaches polls declared their champions before the postseason so the Gophers were named champions despite the loss.
Washington would never reach these heights under Owens again, especially as the LA schools began to get their mojo back in the 60′s, but UW would remain the premier powerhouse in the Northwest for the next several decades. The Huskies won the conference again in 1963 but they went 6-5 with a 4-1 league record so it was just one of those strange occurrences.
I guess life as a five-team conference was pretty boring, so the AAWU let Washington State join in 1952 and both Oregon schools returned in 1954. The AAWU was now the PAC-8, but the Northwest programs continued to struggle as USC began to increasingly dominate the league.
The Ducks entered a profound slump, and Washington State was a nonfactor. Washington was still on top regionally, but struggled to compete against the either the Trojans or Bruins for league supremacy. Oregon State won the conference in 1964, their third under Tommy Prothro. OSU was tied atop the standings with Southern Cal, and were selected to face Michigan in the Rose Bowl where they lost 34-7. Prothro moved to UCLA the following the defeat, and led the Bruins to a Rose Bowl victory over #1 Michigan State the very next year.
Regional supremacy was all that Northwest schools could really fight for in the 60′s and 70′s. Mostly this boiled down to the Huskies and the Beavers. Dee Andros inherited OSU from Prothro and had several strong seasons in the late 60′s before Oregon State too entered a long slump.

Northwest Cup Champs
Washington: 27 Oregon: 21 Washington State: 16 Oregon State: 15
As you can see, the Northwest Cup generally boiled down to two races in this 20 year span. Firstly, Washington under Jim Owens and Oregon State under Prothro and Andros usually decided the best team of the foursome. Then, Oregon and Washington State were battling to avoid being the worst team in the PAC-8.
It was in this span that the Huskies finally took control of first place in the all-time standings. The Beavers came close to pulling themselves out of the basement, but only just miss the cut. The Cougars managed to sneak in a few wins, especially when UW and OSU were both trailing off towards the early 70′s. The Ducks were pretty atrocious, but the worst was yet to come.
-
The Don James Era: 1975-1993
Jim Owens resigned at the end of his final contract following the 1974 season, Washington haven fallen off in the past several years of his tenure. His replacement was Kent State head coach Don James. James had led the Golden Flashes to a MAC championship in 1972 and 9 wins in ‘73. It took James little time to get the Huskies back on track.
In 1977, UW started slow but finished the year 8-4 with a PAC-8 Championship and a win over #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl. It was their first top ten end of season ranking in 18 years, and it was only the beginning. Washington would spend the next two decades as one of the top teams on the West Coast and frequently in the hunt for the league championship.
In 1980 and 1981, the Huskies won back to back PAC-10 titles, fighting off USC, UCLA, and Arizona State, who would be UDub’s main adversaries for the rest of the decade. From 1981 to 1984, Washington won ten or more games and finished in the top ten three times. In 1984, the Huskies went 11-1 with a final #2 ranking, if not for a loss to USC late in the season, they would have claimed the national title instead of BYU.
UCLA took control of the league for a few seasons in the mid to late 80′s, but Washington was reloading. The Huskies exploded back on the scene in 1990, going 10-2 with their only losses coming from national champion Colorado and the pesky Bruins. UW beat Iowa in the Rose Bowl to finish 5th in the nation.
In 1991, Washington painted their masterpiece. The Huskies went a perfect 12-0, breezing through the PAC-10 with a win over #9 Nebraska in non-conference play. UW thoroughly beat #4 Michigan in the Rose Bowl 34-14. Fellow undefeated Miami was named the national champions by the AP Poll, but the Coaches Poll (as well as several computers) declared the Huskies to be the better team and the proper national champs.
Washington was on pace to repeat as national champions in 1992 but dropped two of their final three and then lost the Rose Bowl in a rematch against the Wolverines. Don James retired following the defeat. He finished his career with a 150-60-2 record in Seattle and is hailed as UW’s best coach of all time.
What was going on with the rest of the Northwest at this time? Absolutely nothing. Washington’s dominance in the 80′s was coupled with a downturn on the parts of all three of their brother programs. Oregon and Oregon State had been mired in long slumps and regularly featured at the bottom of the standings. This downward trend culminated in the infamous “Toilet Bowl” in which the 2-8 Beavers fought the 4-7 Ducks to a 0-0 tie in an atrocious game that featured 11 turnovers and 4 missed field goals. With ties now gone from college football, it’s probably the last time we’ll ever see a 0-0 finish in a regulation football game.
Washington State was a middle of the road program at best during this time. The Cougars never came close to a conference title but they weren’t quite as bad as the Oregon programs for most of the 80′s.
But the winds of change were blowing, and the pieces were already set at all three schools to reverse their decades of misery.

Washington was able to greatly extend their lead in the all-time standings during Don James’ tenure as head coach. The Huskies claimed 13 of 19 Northwest Cups at this time. Oregon and Washington State were able to sneak away with a few regional championships when UW was reloading, but that was it. Oregon State was positively atrocious during this stretch, one of the worst major college football programs of the era alongside Northwestern or Rice.

Revenge of the North: 1994-2007
A curious thing happened in the 1990′s. As the California schools all experienced low ebbs, all four schools from the Pacific Northwest exploded to retake control of the conference. Washington had already been a regular contender for PAC-10 titles for the past 15 years, but all four squads began to win conference championships in this era.
People from outside of the region were probably taken aback by the quick changing of the guard that saw all four Northwest schools compete for Rose Bowls, but the ground work was laid much earlier.
Rich Brooks was hired as Oregon’s head coach all the way back in 1977. Brooks slowly and carefully rebuilt the Ducks, turning them from an atrocious squad in the late 70′s to regularly mediocre by the early 80′s to competent by the late 80′s. UO went 8-4 in 1989 and 1990, and attended their first bowl games in over 25 years.
In 1994, Brooks finally took Oregon to the top. After dropping two non-conference games early in the season, the Ducks went 7-1 in PAC-10 play and won their first outright conference championship ever. UO faced off against undefeated Penn State in the Rose Bowl and lost 38-20, but the success of the 1994 season is seen as the turning point in Oregon’s program history. It had been the Ducks’ first time in Pasadena in 37 years. From then on, UO would be a regular contender for the conference title.
Washington won the PAC-10 the next year, though the Huskies were passed over for the Rose Bowl in favor of UCLA. Don James’ replacement was Jim Lambright, who was unable to match his predecessor’s success. Lambright was fired after the 1998 season after only going 45-22-1 in his six years at the helm.
One team that would have killed for that level of success was Washington State. The Cougars had scuffled along for decades without much winning or any recognition. Dennis Erickson briefly coached Wazzu for two years in 1987-88 before bolting to Miami, though not before delivering a 9 win season, which hadn’t been seen in Pullman in generations.
Mike Price replaced Erickson in 1989, and took the Rich Brooks approach to slow but steady improvement. WSU improved to 9-3 in 1992 and went bowling again in 1994. In 1997, everything came together. Under Heisman finalist QB Ryan Leaf, Washington State went 10-1, with a 41-35 win over #20 Washington in the Apple Cup to secure their share of the PAC-10 title. It was the Cougars’ first conference championship in 67 years and they were selected to play in the Rose Bowl. Wazzu lost 21-16 to #1 Michigan, but their #9 finish was a triumph for the long suffering program.
The final team to get their act together was Oregon State. The Beavers were still pretty atrocious for most of the 90′s, but Mike Riley brought some stability to the program in 1997. Riley only stayed for two years before bolting to the NFL, but he laid the foundation for Dennis Erickson’s return to the Northwest. Erickson quickly transformed OSU into a contender.
The 2000 season was quite a special time in the Pacific Northwest. Everything came together for three teams at the same time, creating the perfect storm. Oregon began the year unranked, then lost to #5 Wisconsin in non-conference play. But by October the Ducks were ranked in the top ten with big wins over #6 UCLA and #6 Washington. UO clawed their way to 6th in the AP leading to their end of season matchup with Oregon State.
The Beavers likewise were having arguably their best season in program history. OSU also began the year unranked but jumped into the polls after a 10 point win over #8 USC. Unfortunately, the next week Oregon State lost by three to the Huskies, ending their perfect season, but the Beavers kept winning, jumping up to 8th in the nation leading up to the Civil War.
UW was one of the favorites to win the conference that year, having started the season ranked 14th. This placement was vindicated following a 34-29 victory over #4 Miami. #6 Washington was upset by Oregon but then edged out Oregon State in back to back weeks to end September, then cruised to a 10-1 record to end the season with a magnificent pasting of rival Wazzu 51-3.
Everything came down to the Civil War. #5 Oregon and #8 Oregon State were suddenly playing in the biggest game in the rivalry’s history. The Beavers came out on top, winning 23-13 at home. The conference standings were tied at 7-1 between the Ducks, Beavs, and Huskies. Each team had a 1-1 record against each other in a three-way deadlock.
Arcane tiebreakers including Oregon’s loss to Wisconsin in non-conference play gifted Washington the trip to Pasadena. The #4 Huskies beat #14 Purdue 34-24. Meanwhile, #5 Oregon State mauled #10 Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl, demolishing the Irish 41-9 in their own claim to be the best team in the nation. #8 Oregon held off #12 Texas in the Holiday Bowl, winning 35-30.
The memorable 2000 season saw all three schools finish in the top ten. 10-2 Oregon had to settle for 7th place, probably kicking themselves for the loss to Wisconsin early in the year. Washington and Oregon State were both 11-1, and finished 3rd and 4th respectively. If they hadn’t all peaked at the same time, each of the trio could have played for a national championship.
The Ducks were even better in 2001, going 10-1 and climbing up to #2 in the AP poll, winning their second straight conference championship under coach Mike Bellotti. Controversially, UO wasn’t ranked in the top two by the BCS, and couldn’t play in the Rose Bowl either which was hosting the national championship game. Instead, #2 Oregon beat up #3 Colorado 38-16 in the Fiesta Bowl.
Washington State got back in the action. The Cougars had finished the 2nd to the Ducks in 2001 with a 10-2 record. The next year, the Wazzu tied USC atop the PAC-10 standings and attended their second Rose Bowl in six years, this time losing to Oklahoma.
From 1990 to 2002 the Northwest schools led an insurrection against California for dominance of the PAC-10. It was a glorious time, completely unprecedented in the history of West Coast football. Unfortunately it had to end. Washington probably would have kept winning under Rick Neuheisel but the university fired their head coach for gambling on basketball following the 2002 season. This sent the Huskies on a decade-long tailspin that saw them become one of the worst teams in the BCS conferences.
Mike Price didn’t make it to 2003 either, having left Washington State following his second Rose Bowl campaign for an ill-fated gig at Alabama. Bill Doba inherited a good Cougar squad and again went 10-3 in his first season, but the Cougars really fell off after than and ended up in the basement with their rivals.
Oregon and Oregon State fared much better. Mike Bellotti had the Ducks operating at a higher level than Rich Brooks ever had, routinely winning eight or more games a season. Mike Riley came back to Corvallis after Erickson left for the NFL and kept the Beavers regular contenders. However, the 2000′s were dominated by a resurgent USC. UO and OSU gave the Trojans more trouble than anybody else, but couldn’t do any better than 2nd place.

The decade and a half from Washington’s national championship to the mid-2000′s when both Oregon and Oregon State were upsetting dynastic USC teams was the high water mark for college football in the Northwest. All four programs had some of their best and most memorable teams in this era.
All four won Northwest Cups, and all four played like they should have won even more. It’s a shame they all had to peak at the same time, none of them really got a moment on stage alone as the best team in the region.

Duck Dynasty: 2008-2019
Once again, a climactic shift occurred around 2009 which altered the face of football on the West Coast. Mike Bellotti’s Oregon Ducks were rolling. From 2005 to 2008 UO went 10-2, 7-6, 9-4, and 10-3. They were one of the best teams in the PAC-10 but always behind mighty USC.
Bellotti retired following the ‘08 season, Bellotti retired as Oregon’s all time winningest coach with a 116-55 record. Replacing Bellotti was his former OC, Chip Kelly. Under Kelly, the Ducks really took flight. UO went 10-3 yet again in 2009, this time winning the conference and making the Rose Bowl. It would turn out to be Kelly’s worst season in Eugene.
Meanwhile, Southern California was quickly unravelling as USC failed to win the PAC-10 for the first time since 2002 and sanctions were looming. Even rival claimants Oregon State and Cal were taking steps back. The path was wide open for UO to claim the top spot in the conference.
As far as the Northwest Cup is concerned, the Ducks were the only game in town. Following 2009, the Beavers only had one more quality season under Mike Riley before they slid to the bottom of the standings. Meanwhile the Washington schools were dead in the water. Their 2008 meeting was dubbed “the Crapple Cup” as the 1-10 Cougars managed to beat the 0-10 Huskies in double overtime. It was reminiscent of the Toilet Bowl back in 1984, and while both Evergreen state schools would eventually rebound, it wasn’t fast enough to stop UO.
Under Chip Kelly, Oregon became the most exciting program in college football. The flashy Ducks kicked in everybody’s teeth in 2010, going 12-0 and earning a trip to the BCS Championship Game where they controversially lost to Auburn. UO went 12-2 the next year, winning the PAC-12 and again making the Rose Bowl, this time beating Wisconsin. In 2012, Oregon lost the division to a resurgent Stanford but were otherwise perfect with a 12-1 record and a final #2 ranking, their second in three years.
Kelly departed for the NFL after the ‘12 season, leaving his OC and protege Mark Helfrich in charge. Things initially went really well under Helfrich. The Ducks went 11-2 in his first year in charge and once again made the National Championship Game for the 2014 season, losing this time to Ohio State. A 9-4 record in 2015 was the Ducks’ first single digit win total since 2007. It was 2016 that got Helfrich fired, in which the best team in the PAC-12 over the past decade slumped to 4-8 with seemingly no expectation.
As UO began to fall apart both Washington and Washington State rose to fill the gap. The Huskies rebuilt under Steve Sarkisian, but when Chris Petersen came to Seattle in 2014 UW really began to regain their strength. At the same time, Mike Leach was studiously turning the Cougars into a real threat. From 2016 to 2018 the Apple Cup decided the best team in the Northwest, and Washington went away with the trophy each time. Petersen’s Huskies attended three New Year’s Bowls from 2016 to 2018, their best season a 12-2 campaign in ‘16 that took them to the College Football Playoff.
It looked as though UDub was going to reclaim their spot as the best team in the region for the foreseeable future, but Petersen retired after the 2019 season and Oregon came roaring back to win the PAC-12 handily. I’m very curious to see what happens from here on out.

The past decade has been the high water mark of Oregon football. The Ducks made two national championship games and finished in the top four in 4 of 5 seasons from 2010-2014. Washington’s resurgence under Chris Petersen only netted them 3 years as the top team in the conference. It remains to see if new head coach Jimmy Lake can keep the momentum up.

Book Review: Bringing Police Torture in Chicago to the Full Light of Day
The Torture Machine: Racism and Police Violence in Chicago By Flint Taylor Haymarket Books, Chicago March 2019, $27.00
Tumblr media
By Carl Davidson LeftLinks
Flint Taylor's new book, 'The Torture Machine: Racism and Police Violence in Chicago,' is one of those remarkable works that won't fit under any one category. It's at once a history of a civil and human rights battles in Chicago with national and global reach, a text of modern urban sociology, an example of critical legal theory, a long polemic against white and class privilege, a literature of political exposure, a manual of strategy and tactics and, last but not least, for Flint himself, an autobiography. In its pages, Chicago's top lawyer of the left also shares with us the intense and determined commitment, with all his highs and lows, that lasted through five decades of his personal life to the present day.
The narrative begins with Taylor as a young man, teamed up with other young radical lawyers fresh from passing their bar exams. They had been working with Chicago's Black Panther Party and were among the first on the scene just after Fred Hampton was murdered in his bed. As the cops pulled out, the young lawyers managed to take over and secure the site, and pulled in the media and community leaders to examine the scene before any evidence was altered or disappeared. The reaction sent shock waves through Chicago, since it was clear there was no 'shoot-out,' as authorities had claimed, but cold-blooded assassination by Chicago police, with an assist from the FBI. To make a long story short, Hampton's killers were never tried and walked free, but Taylor and his fellow legal team won a substantial wrongful death settlement from the City of Chicago for Hampton's family in 1982. In the spirit of the times, the young lawyers took their share of the settlement and used it help sustain the People's Law Office (PLO), dedicated to fighting police brutality and other injustices in the greater Chicago area, which they had founded in 1969.
To this day, the Chicago Police Department has never stopped supplying the PLO and other progressive lawyers with a constant source of new clients seeking justice. Whether by mistreating young people of color on the streets, trying to suppress free speech and protest, abusing of men in prison, attacking the LBGTQ community, or warping the courts with false evidence and accusations, through the daily practice of the CPD, the State's Attorney's office and City Hall, Chicagoans experienced or witnessed a decades-long reign of terror carried out by a police force with the rarely, if ever, observed mission of 'we serve and protect.'
The book cover of 'The Torture Machine' features an odd graphic at the heart of the story. Anyone not yet familiar will be puzzled by it. It's a plain black box with a series of wires streaming out of it, along with a crank handle and knobs. It's a replica of a device concocted by GIs in Vietnam to torture captured Vietnamese, both soldiers and civilians. Based on field telephones that could be charged up by cranking the handle, the wires, with alligator clips, would be connected to fingers, ears, nipples, testicles and genitals to deliver severe shocks and burns. Its jerry-rigged purpose was to torture those it was inflicted upon, to punish, and to extract information, all at once.
What did the device have to do with Chicago? Taylor and the PLO team, in taking up brutality and wrongful conviction cases over several years, kept hearing from clients that 'confessions' had been extracted from them by torture, and these accounts often had one thing in common, the mention of this device and its use in Chicago's Area Two police headquarters, in its upstairs detective offices headed up by Lt. Jon Burge, and a team of more than a dozen detectives and other CPD officers. Flint Taylor
Tumblr media
The PLO lawyers did a simple but radical thing. They took their clients at their word. They believed them and set about digging up the truth of their claims. They learned that Burge was a Vietnam veteran, and learned to use the electric shock device on prisoners during the war. Once Burge was in the CPD and moving up to detective rank, he had built at least one of his own, and was making use of it on Black male prisoners. And not just one or two prisoners, but at least 100 or more. Nor was it a rare event. Burge did it regularly, over decades. Nor did he do it alone; he had a squad of more than a dozen Area 2 and Area 3 detectives regularly using the box and other torture devices, such as plastic bags for suffocation. While they worked this evil mainly at night in the upstairs rooms of Area 2, they weren't hidden from other cops. Others, all the way to the top of the CPD, knew about it. Likewise, the States Attorneys, some judges, and the Mayor's office-in short, to one degree or another, the entire criminal justice system in the city was complicit in torture and other human rights abuses.
These assertions may seem far-fetched and over-the-top, at least to those unfamiliar with Chicago's politics and police. But the power of the book is Taylor's relentless and tenacious bringing the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, to the surface and the bright light of day. He had to do it doggedly, repetitively and sometimes little piece by little piece, decade after decade. But in the end, there it is, and there's no one who can deny it without turning beet red with shame.
The torture saga begins with an incident in the early 1980s, where two Chicago police officers were shot and killed in an altercation with several Black men they had stopped. Over the next five days, six men were soon rounded up and tortured, and two of them, Andrew and Jackie Wilson, brothers, made 'confessions' and were found guilty of the killings. Jackie Wilson contended that police abused him during interrogation, and his co-defendant and brother Andrew, was found by doctors after his interrogation to have numerous injuries. From prison, Andrew Wilson contacted the PLO and asked if they would work on a federal civil rights case, since his confession was extracted by torture.
'Labyrinthine' would be a mild word for the complex maneuvers through the courts on the cases of the two brothers over several years. But thanks to the PLO and allies, Jackie Wilson, sentenced to life, won his freedom. Andrew Wilson, sentenced to death, won a new trial, was convicted again, but was sentenced to life instead of death, and eventually died in prison. Andrew had also won a federal civil rights judgment.
Intermixed with the Wilson cases are dozens of others, some who committed no crime save being in the wrong place at the wrong time, with many victories for the defendants and their families. The crass examples of racial and class privilege and abuse in the prisons and courts introduced in Taylor's accounts could fill a book on any one of those charged.
Chicago authorities were not happy with the work of the PLO lawyers. Time and again they were slandered as liars, con artists and only in it for the money made in million-dollar settlements. The cops were especially hostile and the source of threats of violence as well. But opposing attorneys, politicians, and supposedly neutral judges piled on as well.
Several key points, however, stand out in the course of the book and the evidence behind it. First, Taylor and his PLO colleagues were meticulous in putting the interests of their clients and their client's families first and foremost. Second, they went to great lengths in 'seeking truth from facts', even when dangerous to themselves. Third, they deserved every penny they got, and continue to get, in settlements-a good deal of which keeps the People's Law Office alive and functioning for future cases.
But Taylor also had another motive, which weaves through the book like a red thread. He is determined to bring Jon Burge to justice, to try him in a court of law, and see him sent to prison. Moreover, he wants to see Burge's boss, Richard M. Daley, held accountable. To accomplish these goals, Taylor and the PLO are well aware that the effort will be political as well as legal.
This is where a unique value of 'The Torture Machine' shines. It's a field manual of strategy and tactics, and Taylor is very good at it. From the start, he seizes every opportunity at the use of media to build his clients' stories with a bigger picture of big-city politics, corruption, and injustice. It doesn't matter if it's a small neighborhood newsletter, the independent Chicago Reader, the widely read free paper selling futons along with progressive news, the Chicago Defender and other small Black newspapers, the Sun-Times and the Tribune, local and national TV, and the New York Times and other national publications. As one of his adversaries warned, 'there's nothing more dangerous than letting Flint Taylor get in front of a camera or microphone.'
Even in unfriendly news outlets, Taylor takes the trouble to find and befriend those reporters with an open mind and a degree of professional objectively, if not sympathy. His goal seems to be recognizing that the court record is not the only record of value, and once something is in print or on tape, it might have multiple uses elsewhere, in or out of court, and often does. Taylor is also deft at building organizations and making use of coalitions, acknowledging a truth that trials are not only won in courtrooms, but in the wider community as well. Organizations not 'officers of the court' can often speak more freely to the public. To win the victories and settlements aimed for, the PLO often had to assist in building an entire counter-hegemonic bloc, from people in the neighborhoods to the media and political groups, to a majority of the City Council.
Taylor and his comrades also do well in finding and making good use of conflicts and tensions in the camp of their adversaries. They evaluate judges one by one, check out the family inter-connections of various police officers and officials, looking for hints of bias, and make good use of the well-known differences between African American patrolmen and the rest of the force-all to find information to get them closer to the truths that will help their clients. A handful of cops even come forward out of the blue, disgusted with what they know is happening and breaking the 'code of silence.' One goes to great length to remain secret-Flint nicknames him or her 'Deep Badge'-but he or she helped reveal the scope and breadth of the torture scandal (it was early on in the history of the scandal)
In the end, Taylor gets his man. First Burge is suspended, then fired, and retires with his pension and boat, the Vigilante (you can't make this up!). But even as the statute of limitations runs out, Taylor makes trips to Florida (with bodyguard) to depose Burge, gets him back in court, and gets him found guilty of perjury, and finally sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison. Burge is broken physically but remains an unbowed racist and fascist to the bitter end. His luck with Daley is not quite as good. Taylor wins motion after motion to bring Daley to a deposition table, but Daley is not without resources and manages to parry all but one narrow last decision, one that might still go the wrong way for the former mayor. The final version of the book reveals that Daley, now suffering from the effects of a reported stroke, was deposed by Taylor in 2018 but the transcript is shrouded in court-ordered secrecy.
As Taylor notes, however, this is far from the only reason that Burge's fate is only a partial victory. True, the PLO and allied lawyers have forced the city to pay over $130 million to those tortured and their families-not counting the enormous costs of lawyers for the police. Many police involved remain free and many tortured prisoners remain behind bars. The torture outrages will 'never be behind us,' Taylor writes in his epilogue, not until Chicago 'reckons fully with the racist nature of law enforcement and mass incarceration.'

For the week of 4 February 2019
Quick Bits:
Archie #702 sees Sandy Jarrell and Matt Herms pitch in for much of this issue as Betty and Veronica try to figure out who Archie’s seeing now. It goes about as well as you’d expect. Nick Spencer is still delivering some humorous dialogue and the opening sequence from Marguerite Sauvage is as beautiful as ever.

Archie 1941 #5 is pretty heavy, dealing with the the grief, remorse, and emotional devastation of loss experienced during the war. Peter Krause and Kelly Fitzpatrick’s artwork has been wonderful throughout this entire series and they nail the conclusion.

Avengers #14 sparks the fuse of the vampire civil war from Jason Aaron, David Marquez, Justin Ponsor, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit. There’s some really nice world-building going on here with the Legion of the Unliving and a rather interesting development with Ghost Rider.

Batman #64 begins “The Price” crossover with The Flash from Joshua Williamson, Guillem March, Tomeu Morey, and Steve Wands. Outside of the tie-ins throughout the DC titles, I haven’t been reading Heroes in Crisis, but this ties in as well, spotlighting some of the strain that Batman and the Flash have been under. Something definitely feels off about the situation.

BPRD: The Devil You Know #13 feels like shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic at this point, with all of the pieces moving into place, and we’re just awaiting the inevitable end of everything. Stunning artwork from Laurence Campbell and Dave Stewart.

Champions #2 fills in the hole of what happened during the battle with Zzzax last issue and, boy, is it a doozy. Jim Zub, Steven Cummings, Marcio Menyz, and Clayton Cowles set up something interesting, and possibly horrifying, to come down the line.

Conan the Barbarian #3 maintains its high bar of excellence as the one-off stories building up Conan’s past continue from Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. The art from Asrar and Wilson is just perfect.

The Curse of Brimstone #11 is the beginning of the end in the first of this two-part finale for the series from Justin Jordan, Denys Cowan, John Stanisci, Rain Beredo, and Wes Abbott. It’s great to see Cowan’s art here as he, Stanisci, and Beredo make the beginning of this final fight look absolutely gorgeous.

Daredevil #1 is a very impressive debut from Chip Zdarsky, Marco Checchetto, Sunny Gho, and Clayton Cowles. It picks up from Matt’s recovery in Man Without Fear and, well, things are messy, unfocused, and he’s having a hell of a time getting his feet under him again. But, beyond that, there’s a real depth to the story here. Though there’s a ton of action, it also goes deep into character building and flashbacks of Matt’s time as a kid getting morality lessons from his priest. This is damn good, taking cues from Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s “Born Again”, but it also feels influenced by Mike Grell’s “The Longbow Hunters”. There’s also a back-up written and illustrated by Zdarsky himself with an interpretation of how Daredevil “sees” and the digital edition gives a smattering of back-up material including covers, art comparisons, and sketches. I highly recommend this.

Deathstroke #40 concludes the “Arkham” arc with Slade killing Hugo Strange and then slaughtering a bunch of homeless men. Maybe. Depends on which truth you believe. In doing so, Priest sets up the seeds for the upcoming crossover with Teen Titans.

Die #3 peels back another layer of the onion of this world as Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans, and Clayton Cowles give us a story of how the various regions work. All through an allegory of war between Eternal Prussia and Little England, Tolkien re-adapted to a kind of explanation on his own allegory. It’s interesting, especially when coupled with the essay Gillen pens in the back that explains the whole construct. That said, it also works great as just an extremely pretty adventure where a party of adventurers fights a dragon. I’m loving what this series is doing.

Doctor Who: The Thirteenth Doctor #4 concludes the opening arc with the Hoarder from Jody Houser, Rachael Stott, Erica Eren Angiolini, Viviana Spinelli, Richard Starkings, Sarah Jacobs, and John Roshell. I still love the inventiveness and ornate quality to the Hoarder’s design.

The Empty Man #4 gives a bit more insight into the disease ravaging the planet, as more of the strange skittering monsters appear and the kids from the original mini-series return. Cullen Bunn, Jesús Hervás, Niko Guardia, and Ed Dukeshire are crafting something very dark and weird with this series, but also very, very good.

Female Furies #1 isn’t a bad start from Cecil Castellucci, Adrian Melo, Hi-Fi, and Carlos M. Mangual. I quite like Melo’s art here, as she’s adapted it somewhat to highlight influences from some Fourth World luminaries like Jack Kirby, Keith Giffen, and Walt Simonson.

The Freeze #3 delves deeper into the early days after the Freeze as the awakened look into the serial killings, and we get more mysteries in missing people (who may or may not be the same as those murdered) and the revelation that Ray is being manipulated. Really great work here from Dan Wickline, Phillip Sevy, and Troy Peteri.

GI Joe: Sierra Muerte #1 sees Michael Fiffe bring his kind of retro charm to the Joes in the beginning of this series. It’s actually played pretty straight and reminds me of the loving care that Tom Scioli also takes to these properties. Great art and a story that reminds me of the original GI Joe cartoon.

Giant Days #47 intertwines Daisy learning to drive, McGraw’s brother dropping in on him and Susan, and Esther taking care of an illicit adorable puppy. All the usual humour and character building you’d expect from John Allison, Max Sarin, Whitney Cogar, and Jim Campbell.

The Girl in the Bay #1 is an intriguing debut from JM DeMatteis, Corin Howell, James Devlin, and Clem Robins. It jumps headlong in to some of DeMatteis’ favourite themes and topics as spiritualism, reincarnation, and coming of age (particularly in Brooklyn) and presents a compelling world and mystery for the seemingly dead, then strangely awakened fifty years later Karen Sartori. Very nice artwork from Howell and Devlin.

The Green Lantern #4 may yet be the most beautiful issue to date, with Liam Sharp and Steve Oliff elevating the impossibly high bar of their artwork to an even greater level. The character designs, page layouts, panel transitions, and sheer storytelling in the artwork is incredible.

Gunhawks #1 is another of the revived title one-shots in celebration of Marvel’s 80th anniversary, this one a western from David & Maria Lapham, Luca Pizarri, Neeraj Menon, Rachelle Rosenberg, and Travis Lanham. It’s gritty, bloody, and the art from Pizarri, Menon, and Rosenberg is very impressive.

Immortal Hulk #13 concludes the descent into Hell in an issue that is probably as epic as the Avengers beatdown from #7. Al Ewing, Joe Bennett, Ruy José, Belardino Brabo, Rafael Fonteriz, Paul Mounts, and Cory Petit continue to deliver one of the best series on the stands today.

Justice League #17 follows on from the annual and the revelations in the “Escape from Hawkworld” arc in this single issue story of Martian Manhunter’s past from Scott Snyder, Jim Cheung, Mark Morales, Walden Wong, Tomeu Morey, and Tom Napolitano. Some fascinating developments in J’onn’s history here, with gorgeous artwork, and the funny truth that Batman’s really a concerned bat-dad.

Killmonger #4 wages a pitched battle with Die #3 and The Green Lantern #4 for most beautiful art in a comic this week. Juan Ferreyra’s work is stunning, giving the book depth, character, and an immense re-readability just to stare at the imagery again. There is a wonderful sequence of blood pooling up the page as the violence and body count increases and the design for the cat goddess is gorgeous. As to that latter, Egypt isn’t for want of multiple cat deities and, though Sekhmet is probably the easy answer, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the older and somewhat lesser known Mafdet. Bryan Hill, Ferreyra, and Joe Sabino continue to deliver one hell of a solid story with this series.

Oberon #1 is off to a fantastic start with this tale from Ryan Parrott, Miloš Slavković, and Charles Pritchett. It strikes a nice balance between fantasy and the mundane as Bonnie finds out she, and the world, aren’t exactly what she thought. Gorgeous artwork from Slavković.

Old Man Quill #1 kicks off a Guardians tale set in the “Old Man” universe from Ethan Sacks, Robert Gill, Andres Mossa, and Joe Caramagna. I liked the recently concluded Sacks-penned Old Man Hawkeye series as well and Star-Lord appears to be taking on that same kind of beaten-down sardonicism of Clint.

Prodigy #3 sees Crane and Agent Straks racing across the globe to find out information on the cult aiding the alternate dimension insurgents. The artwork from Rafael Albuquerque and Marcelo Maiolo continues to be the main attraction, delivering some amazing action sequences.

Self/Made #3 gives us another twist as Rebecca and Amala attempt to take down Bryce for control of Amala’s code. This story continues to evolve in some very interesting ways, while including some of the toxicity inherent in some game development studios, with some beautiful artwork from Eduardo Ferigato and Marcelo Costa.

Shadow Roads #6 returns with Brian Hurtt stepping in for the line art and it’s great to see him back illustrating within the Sixth Gun world. Really nice, weird designs for the Bone Plains and interesting hints as to what’s next for the new/old threats seeping back into the world.

Star Wars: Age of Republic - Anakin Skywalker #1 spotlights a moral quandary for Anakin from Jody Houser, Cory Smith, Wilton Santos, Walden Wong, Java Tartaglia, and Travis Lanham. It’s still interesting to see Anakin as “General Skywalker” during the Clone Wars and how different he was from what he’d become.

These Savage Shores #3 is almost a perfect comic, actually it may well be a perfect comic. The craft and care that goes into creating this work is astounding. Ram V, Sumit Kumar, Vittorio Astone, and Aditya Bidikar are elevating the art form each issue. With the compelling intertwining of history and horror. With the epistolary narrative approach perfectly befitting the vampire sub-genre. With the attention to detail in how dialogue and narration are presented visually. With the variations on the 9-panel grid to guide pacing and keep the reader visually interested. With the consideration of the colour washes and tones to amplify the mood and atmosphere of the tale. This series is incredible.

United States vs. Murder Inc. #6 is kind of a weird conclusion to this series as the larger plot of the predicament the families currently find themselves in is left to the next series and, like last issue, we instead get more of Valentine’s family history. Great art, though, from Michael Avon Oeming and Taki Soma. The art really reminds me of some of Darwyn Cooke’s in his Parker adaptations.

Vindication #1 is an interesting crime drama from MD Marie, Carlos Miko, Dema Jr., Thiago Goncalves, and Troy Peteri. I love the shades of grey and uncertainty in motivation and truth in this story.

Wasted Space #6 returns with all the humour, violence, and madness that Michael Moreci, Hayden Sherman, Jason Wordie, and Jim Campbell brought to the first arc. I love Sherman’s designs for the gods, they remind me a lot of Ted McKeever’s work.

The Wrong Earth #6 ends season one of the series with Dragonfly and Dragonflyman adapting somewhat each to their new Earths, showing a bit of equivocation of the characters as the environment changes them. This has been an interesting story from Tom Peyer, Jamal Igle, Juan Castro, Andy Troy, and Rob Steen and there’s ample threads to bring me back when the series resumes.

Young Justice #2 continues the adventure in Gemworld in the present, while we get a focus on Wonder Girl in the past. There’s something weird going on here with time and continuity that still feels like a story beat more than Brian Michael Bendis just playing fast and loose with what he wants. Great art from Patrick Gleason, Emanuela Lupacchino, Ray McCarthy, and Alejandro Sanchez.

It had been raining the day before, when a fierce knock upon her door rattled the hinges.
Marinette had rushed downstairs to pull open, revealing a sopping wet Adrien at the threshold.
“I need your help...” He rasped, stumbling inside into the warmth beyond.
“Okay.” Marinette had agreed without question or hesitation. She had promised him she'd be there for him no matter what, after everything they've been through as Ladybug and Chat Noir.
“My mother... My father...” Adrien grimaced. “She woke up again. Because of him.”
Marinette didn't need to guess the truth he spoke underneath. She had been dead, cold and still inside that wretched crystal coffin.
“I need your help.” He repeated, staring into her eyes desperately. “I can't do this alone, please.”
“Okay.” She promised, swallowing thickly. “There's a shop, I've heard of. They specialise in... Gardening.”
Adrien nodded, eyes closing for a brief moment. “I can't go. She'll get suspicious if I'm gone for too long.”
“I'll go for you then. I won't let you down.” Marinette whispered.
Which is why she was here, stood in front of the unassuming clocktower that shouldn't exist, labelled neatly with a purple bat shaped sign 'The Batgirls' Emporium'
The door creaked as she opened it, stepping inside. The crackle of magic rolling off her as the wards let her through. She clutched at her Ladybug protective charm tightly.
The shopkeeper was watching her. She glanced away, scurrying towards the necromancy section, hope desperately curling in her chest as she scanned the aisle for what she seeked.
———
Cass looked her latest customer up and down. Their eyes met, and the other looked away first.
She nudged her partner gently and gestured to the necromancy aisle. Steph whistled.
"Ooooh, boy, you're looking for a toughie, huh?" she asked the nervous girl.
"I, um, I didn't -- I don't --"
"Not to worry, not to worry," Steph interrupted. "We've got you covered! We've got animal revivals, people revivals, plant revivals (although we charge extra for a kingdom's crops), and --"
"I'm not!", the customer interruped, "Looking to bring someone back! I need to put someone down!"
Cass's eyes sharpened. Steph froze, then slanted a look at the other.
After a quick examination, Cass shook her head.
"Well," Steph said, "Sorry for any rude assumptions I might've made." Her voice was low and soothing.
“It's... Fine.” Marinette mumbled, refusing to look at her, hands fidgeting at her sides.
Steph sighed. "Look, Cass isn't karate-chopping you right now, so I trust you're not up to any evil. What do you need?"
Marinette made a slight keening noise. “It's... I don't know exactly, I've only heard rumours of it... But my friend, someone he knew was dead and now they're not. And there's. He's scared. I promised I'd help.” She admits, saying far too much and yet not enough at the same time.
Cass vaulted over the counter and pulled Marinette into a hug. She tensed, and Steph feared she'd bolt. Instead, she melted into it.
How long had it been, Marinette wondered, since she'd last been hugged. Even Adrien kept his distance these days, despite everything, not that she faulted him, they were both hurting and coping and healing in their own ways... But she missed being comforted.
