unpopular opinion: fo3 has great concepts and design but it is almost impossible to have the attention span and patience to play the whole thing without modding it

#i still to this day have never finished any part of it other than side quests and some dlc #on my most recent playthrough i pushed past tranquility lane. got burned out after saving fawkes #i think a big part of it is that i am trying *not* to be a LW character when i play #and the game isn't structured for broad RP. like at all #i should make a LW. hm

I want a re-make of Fallout 3 so bad if for no other reason than because the companions have so many interesting tidbits and traits that would be so interesting to go into depth with on a companion quest that are just kinda left to the imagination like, Fawkes’s could be about remembering who he was before he mutated, Charon’s could be linked to breaking out of his programming or whatever it is and burning his contract, idk what Butch’s would be, but he would absolutely be a more interesting companion if there were friendship level conversations you could have with him, because he grew up with the Lone Wanderer. Even though they antagonized each other they know each other better than anyone else out in the wasteland and it’d be such an interesting dynamic especially because!!! he flirts!!! with the female LW!! but we don’t have any option in game to flirt back or anything, we just give him commands.

Fo3 Companions Celebrating New Years

Charon's only ever celebrated New Year's by kicking drunken attendants out of the Ninth Circle, so it's safe to say that he awaits instructions of a similar volition from you. Did you want him to supervise you at the bar? Make sure you don't overdo it in any way? He'll do whatever you order. Although, he's very reluctant when you hand him the party hat and tell him he has the day off. He's not really sure what to do, so he just sticks by you for the rest of the night. He can't say it was the worst night of his life, but he'd definitely ask you to find a less crowded bar next year. He can only handle screaming and cheers for so long.

Clover hasn't really celebrated before (slavers don't normally care for holidays), so when she sees you preparing your home in Megaton, she quickly gets herself dolled up for the occasion. She wants to look good stepping into the New Year! And she wants to look good for you! She'll pop open a bottle of wine, have you sit down, and take care of you while everyone outside yells and screams. What better way to start the New Year than doing what she's always done best? Relax! She'll take care of you! And if you wanted, she'd gladly put an outfit together for you as well, then you could both look perfect when you leave and join the neighbors outside!

The Brotherhood always holds their own celebration at the Citadel, so Star Paladin Cross takes you over a few days in advance to help set everything up. You'll spend a day or two putting up decorations and counting bottles before the big day. Usually, it's pretty slow, but eventually, the place will be ready, and all the effort you put into the place will pay off. Cross will go and get wasted somewhere off in the corner, so you'll probably spend the holidays with complete strangers. Until Sarah shows up, that is, then she'll talk to you the rest of the night.

Jericho finds all the yelling outside to be annoying. This time of year is the one he hates the most just because of all the commotion. Out of all the pre-war holidays to still be standing, this is the one that was kept? Great. Usually, he prefers to lay in bed and ignore it until sunrise, but with you, he wouldn't mind going out and grabbing a few drinks at Moriarity's Saloon. The two of you sitting off in a corner as you wait for everything to die down. That's when the New Year's really begins with him.

A lot's happened to both you and Butch, so he's excited to be able to switch into the new year with you. Couldn't be any worse than this current one, right? At least the chance of being kicked out of your home is lesser now. He might technically be underaged, but he's snagging you both buckets worth of alcohol, and the two of you are going to party until you pass out. You both deserve it for everything you've had to overcome.

Fawkes prefers to spend his New Year inside. He'll set up a bunch of blankets, pour you a glass of whatever you want, and just relax for the night. You guys can do whatever he genuinely doesn't care. Red Menace? Put it into the terminal. Reading? He just finished organizing the bookshelf. Or even if you just want to talk with him, he has no qualms about sitting on the couch and chatting until midnight. It's comfortable, isolated, and welcoming, especially when you consider how cold it's gotta be outside.

RL-3 will either assume it's Independence Day or someone just opened fire on the town with the amount of homemade fireworks being launched. He'll either be cheering enthusiastically with the rest of the Megaton citizens or taking out his flamer. It's probably best to shut him off for this night. On the off chance, he assumes the worst is happening.

You might lose Dogmeat in the commotion. He loves the crowds of people and the colorful decorations, but the loud noises can make him a bit on edge. Don't worry too much about him, though if he's going to hide anywhere, it'll be with Moira or Gob, and they're both sure to take care of him for the night.

FO3 companions react to LW with good karma:

Butch :

He's not surprised, I mean, you grew up together. You always protected Amata when he was a little shit. But he's grateful you got him out of the shelter before he really went off the deep end. Although he's very embarrassed by that. He's never really been a good person, but he's never been a bad one either. He's not a monster, just an immature young adult.

Sergent RL-3 :

A soldier has to be good, but also firm. My God this poor old robot is torn in two. Your dynamic is like the bad cop and the good cop. If he were human and could drink whiskey, he'd drink to every good deed.

Fawkes :

The one who is most proud of you, of all the companions. Seeing you protect those who can't, killing villains, or recovering children kidnapped by his brothers. That's what warms his mutant heart. He'll congratulate you, give you advice and, above all, say what he thinks about the situation and you. But if your karma goes lower and lower, he'll be disappointed but won't tell you. After a while he'll ask you if you're doing well mentally. He's afraid he hasn't seen any clues. He will stay with you for a while once the karma is bad, but will leave with a heavy heart.

Paladin Cross :

She's happy to be travelling with you, finally someone good in this world. But she doesn't say it openly, a pat on the back. Is the only thing to congratulate you. But if you have to lose your karma, secretly she will be disappointed (depending on your level of relationship with her.). But above all she'll go back to the citadel without a word and with a sad heart for having believed in Father Christmas.

Jericho :

The most hostile of them all. If he wasn't in Megaton, he'd accept a lot of capsules to put a bullet in your head. But somehow he understands that you're not witty enough to be mean.

Clover :

Compared to Jericho, she won't be too hostile towards you. She'll just be disappointed by your behaviour, believing she's found a new dictator with troubled tendencies. She'll just be bitter with you. But she'll still fall in love with you somehow.

Charon :

Charon doesn't give a fuck about your karma. But my God, it feels good not to kill women and innocent children or to put a bullet between the eyes of a simple drunken traveller for Ahzrukhal. But sometimes he's a bit scared of your kindness, he tends to prefer someone neutral or openly nasty. For him, kindness means hiding. And he doesn't want to discover your inclination if you're a fake.

Dogmeat :

This good dog doesn't care about your karma. He'll always be with you, as long as you don't mistreat him or betray his trust in you. A bone, a corpse, a fight plus a caress to congratulate him and he'll be fine. He'll be loyal to you with any kind of karma.

It'll never happen but if I made a parody cartoon of fo3 I'd make Jericho cough up blood every time he comes on screen. Coughs blood on the LW's shoulder. Their vault suit is a little more blood stained each cut. After Fawkes and Charon say no the LW will ask Jericho to go into the water purifier since he's basically dying anyway and he'll just cough blood in their face and die then the purifier explodes

Fallout 3 Companions Ranked By Whether They Should Have Turned on the Purifier

Fawkes. Absolutely no excuse. This isn’t even different from the G.E.C.K. except that HE WILL ALSO DIE if no one goes in. Obviously he’s radiation-resistant and he’ll be fine, but nah. What was all that stuff about owing the LW your life, again? He gives some excuse about destiny. What?? Just because it narratively makes sense for the main character to die here doesn’t mean you have to enforce that from inside the story, Fawkes. Booooo.

RL-3. His Broken Steel dialogue clarifies that he does understand that he’s immune to radiation, so he’s basically saying you should die because your dad did, which is deranged. Why would a soldierbot even think he can disobey that order? How does his programming even allow for this? Unclear.

Charon. Buddy, we know that any day you can find a loophole and disobey your employer is a good day. Happy for you. But now is perhaps not the time? His original dialogue is just flat-out cruel, but in Broken Steel he sounds more like he’s teasing. I’ll give him a few points here because I don’t think it’s impossible that high radiation could turn a ghoul feral. Also, he doesn’t necessarily have any reason to be loyal to the LW since he’s not here by choice. Still, you’d think he’d see the logic in avoiding anyone’s death altogether. (Unless their death would free him? Somehow I doubt that.)

Star Paladin Cross. MA’AM. You are third-in-command of the Brotherhood. Those people who style themselves after knights? Who make this big fuss about honor and bravery and stuff? Yeah, them. Neither you nor Sarah should even be entertaining the idea of letting this teenager die for you. If anyone’s going to survive it’s you, since you’re a cyborg. I swear James’s ghost is punching you in the face right now.

Jericho. Yeah, not likely. Would be better than letting the teenager do it. But not likely.

Butch. He’s pretty much in the same situation as the Lone Wanderer, except that it’s not his family legacy driving the story. He’s a sad 20-year-old hairdresser who didn’t sign up to have his insides roasted. Understandable that he wouldn’t want to go in.

Clover. You tell them, queen. Set those boundaries. Sure, LW could theoretically blow up your head for that, but every other option here also means probable death, so just take back your autonomy while you can. You owe them nothing.

Doesn't Fawkes only retain his nonviolent nature because he has a wikipedia terminal in his cell and by the time the LW shows up it had been discovered and smashed and Fawkes implies that he's starting to slip without constant academic stimulation? And Virgil (? I think? Fo4 institute FEV guy) loses his shit completely if he's not "cured" in time, and iirc his terminal entries show him slipping into violence. There's something to be said about BGS equating "intelligence" with "humanity" and it's not good

Charon doesn't have much of an opinion on it. Sure, it's strange, but what hasn't been in his life? He's had much worse holders to his contract and, if the worst thing you're going to do is own a body pillow that looks like him, he's counting himself lucky. Just don't make it any weirder than it has to be. He'll ignore it as long as you do.

Clover is actually kinda into it. She considers it an honor that you found a way to get your hands on a body pillow that resembles her! In her mind, it just shows that you care and maybe even love her! Although, she would've preferred that you'd just asked her to hold you at night. She finds that she gets a tad jealous over the pillow if you seem to be overly attached to it.

Star Paladin Cross feels the need to step in when she discovers it. Not only is it inappropriate considering she's your superior and was friends with your dad, but also because she finds it incredibly uncomfortable. She'll approach you kindly, trying to explain in the most professional way possible that she's just not ok with whatever you've got going on. You need to toss the pillow. There's not going to be a discussion about this.

Jericho finds it weird. He doesn’t do well with clingy or obsessive people, so finding out about this habit of yours raises all sorts of flags for him. How does someone even come across the means to obtain something so specific? And why aren't you using those resources to do something beneficial? He won't bring it up, but it definitely makes him look at you differently.

Butch is confused, to say the least. He’s tormented you for your entire life up until this point and.. you have something like that? Of him?? He finds it baffling that you could EVER find comfort in something that resembles him, even if he did make up for the past. He won't bring the body pillow up specifically, but you'll notice that he suddenly starts making jokes and innuendos about you being a masochist because he doesn't know what else to do other than assume that you are one.

Fawkes doesn't understand it, but he's not entirely against it. If anything, he'll feel a bit prideful about it. To him, it's as if you feel comfortable enough around him to view him as a source of comfort and, as a mutant, that's all he could ever hope for. Especially, from someone such as you. He won't tell you that he's found it, but you'll notice the shift in his mood as he becomes a lot more joyful afterward.

RL-3 decides that if you're going to go as far as making a body pillow of himself, then you should at least add the American flag as well. It's clear he doesn't understand what the implications are of you owning that, but he tries to make it about securing a stronger loyalty toward the country. Surely, you only own that because you have a certain respect toward America and its leaders, and it's something he admires greatly.

Hi ! I hope I understood your request correctly and didn't misinterpret it as something stupid…

I removed Sergeant RL-3, Paladin Cross and Jericho because I didn't know how to make them into a certain jealousy dynamic. I never played with them.

(sorry it took me longer, I hope you like it).

How do the fo3 companions show their jealousy of LW, and then claim that they are not :

Butch :

I like to think Butch was always jealous of you. You have a good father, even if he left you in the lurch. But you had a father who loved you, compared to him who had a mother who was physically there, but not quite with him. So yes, Butch is more envious than jealous.

When Butch started travelling with you, his envy turned to jealousy. You seemed so smart, so good at fighting and everyone talked about you. When he was in the dugout, he loved to brag about being the best shot in his group. When the supervisor asked them to get rid of the bugs. (to run away, because he was scared).

He pretended not to be. But one day you argue, as usual. A dynamic you never forget.

“ So you can't understand. You've always had what I've always dreamed of having, and yet you complain so much! ”

“ Wait… are you jealous of me ? ”

“ Yes !... No... ”

Fawkes :

Fawkes was the happiest mutant man when he met you. You shared a love of literature, poetry and science. At first he admired you for all the knowledge your father had given you. But once he felt his heart pinch. He didn't know why, but deep down he was sad to feel that way again.

Once you discussed your shared knowledge. That same twinge came back, but you were looking at him. The sad look on his disfigured face brought back memories of your shelter.

“ Fawkes all right? ”

“ What's ? Yes, yes, I'm fine. I…. I'm happy to share my research with you. It just brings back bad memories.. ”

Which is not exactly a lie…

Clover :

You're a bit of a charm for the raiders. To displease you and to displease poor Clover. She's jealous of your beauty and the lights the Raiders put on you.

She'll admit straight away that she's jealous of you. So to appease her and to take advantage of it, you tell her the truth. That you hate being at the centre of raiders.

Now clover is a trap for herself. A beautiful slave crying in the middle of a supply route. So she can plunder the local merchants.

(Poor Quinn, you have no shame in attacking this ghoul ?)

Charon :

In all his ghoulish life, he never thought he'd be jealous of a teenager who was barely a young adult. But your talent for discretion has made him more jealous. His large body doesn't allow him to be discreet; a wall of sand can barely hide him.

For some days now, Charon has been looking at you in a different way. Knowing that he speaks with his eyes, but not yet knowing how to decode them. You ask him to, so you get a simple "nothing".

Dogmeat :

That dog can't be jealous of you, can he? Oh, you took the bone he wanted. Now he's lying on the floor watching you strut around with that bone. He's drooling over that bone, don't you see? You look at him once, twice and the third time you shake the bone at him. Just a waggle of his head and tail in response. Oh, how sweet of you to give it to him.
