From Lucie Viatge's ArtStation:
Here is a collection of Fang assets I drew before their final redesign (I shortened the snout). We then settled on making pretty complex puppets for each character, so all these bespoke assets got scraped!

Lucie Viatge, the character designer of Goodbye Volcano High, recently revealed more concept art for the game, including of the in-universe Magical Girl show "Pretty Heroes" (link in source):
There is also a Magical Girl show in the game, called Pretty Heroes. I designed all the characters! I'm a big magical girl enthusiast, with my favorites being MS Madoka Magica, Cardcaptor Sakura and several Precure seasons (ofc I also like Sailor Moon and many others).
Unless I missed something, I'm pretty sure Pretty Heroes is mostly just mentioned and maybe some poster or merch is shown here and there a couple of times in the entire game, so it was a big surprise learning that there was so much thought put into it. Edit: turns out there IS a scene with them I completely missed, beware spoilers.

“It’s one thing to believe people should share equal power and influence, another to act on it. Lucie Viatge started as an intern at KO_OP, and at the end of her program, KO_OP offered to bring her on full-time as art director and one of the studio’s many designers.
Viatge told me it took an entire year for her to adjust to life at KO_OP, and to begin asserting herself. “When you grow up into a system where everything is hierarchical, it's difficult not to see hierarchies and power dynamics everywhere,” said Viatge.
“For a while, I was really afraid to voice any concern or opinion, even though they were encouraging me to, because I thought if they didn't like what I was gonna say—they would fire me or something!”

Indie Game Goodbye Volcano High Announced for the PlayStation 5
June 12, 2020 10:31 AM EST
During PlayStation’s Future of Gaming showcase, indie developer KO_OP debuted Goodbye Volcano High, a narrative-driven high school adventure.
During yesterday’s The Future of Gaming showcase, indie developer KO_OP announced Goodbye Volcano High for the PlayStation 5.
This narrative-driven game follows Fang, an 18-year-old dinosaur who’s band goes viral as she worries about what’ll happen after graduating high school. It features multiple storylines that lead to different endings you can unlock, alongside musical mini-games to experience. Additionally, among the game’s voice actors is Lachlan Watson from Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
“Our company is a co-op in which all the voices matter. The team working on GVH is about ten people, all coming from diverse backgrounds,” says Studio Director Saleem Dabbous in a press release. “Making a queer game about a non-binary main character is hugely important to us. Partnering with PlayStation has given us the opportunity to build something of incredible production value. Everything you see in this first trailer was taken directly from the game and is playable.”
Goodbye Volcano High is just one of several games shown off during PlayStation’s event yesterday. Other notable game announcements include Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Resident Evil VIII: Village, and Horizon: Forbidden West. Smaller titles were also shown off including Bugsnax, Solar Ash, and Jett: The Far Shore. Additionally, we finally know what the PlayStation 5 looks like.
“This type of game is definitely a first for KO_OP,” says Art Director Lucie Viatge. “We are creating a detailed and colorful art style that resembles an animated movie, with gorgeous hand-painted backgrounds and expressive characters that come together to create a game where every shot feels special. Our goal with the art is to bring you close to what the characters are experiencing, and allow their emotions to really shine through. We’ve been building an incredible team of artists for the project, and it’s been really amazing to bring our vision to life.”
Goodbye Volcano High launches in 2021 on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. If you’re interested, you can watch the game’s announcement trailer below.

For the concerts and musical performances, we were considering having a dress-up minigame for Fang. I created outfit moodboards for the different performances throughout the game, and concepted some UX for the minigame.

I wanted to preserve Lucie Viatge's fantastic twitter thread about the design evolution of the main cast of Goodbye Volcano High (a game in wich she worked as Art Director and Character Designer), for those that have understandably stopped using that site or in case it finally colapses.

In Goodbye Volcano High the characters play a parody of Dungeons & Dragons. The character designer Lucie Viatge recently revealed this unused, simplified art of the characters's characters, described simply as "chibi", but I would bet money it was going to be a retro Final Fantasy battle reference (link in the source).
During the game, the characters play a DnD inspired ttrpg called LnL. I decided to go for an 80s anime inspired aesthetic, and to go all in on the costumes. I got each character artist at the time to design at least one of the characters costumes, which was a lot of fun! I designed Fang myself and gave the artists moodboards for each character. LnL was at first going to have a combat mini game with chibi versions of the characters and enemies!

Lucie Viatge's ArtStation page has a lot of the art she made for Goodbye Volcano High, including of the in-universe magical girl anime "Pretty Heroes". More of it could be seen in her official page, but unique to ArtStation is the animatic seen above of the team's transformation.

Pretty Heroes is a magical girls show that I imagined for Goodbye Volcano High. It serves as a way for Fang to connect with another character throughout the story. As a big magical girl enthousiast I designed the characters to be reminiscent of classic magical girl tropes (the caring pink, smart blue, energetic red and mysterious purple), with a magical boy as the yellow character. The theme is the weather, with pink being the clouds, blue the rain, red the thunder, purple the night and yellow the day. I also made a whole transformation sequence storyboard!
