the one good thing about my bus home being delayed by five hours is that i had time to reread both Thief of Time and Hogfather, and they're still two of the all-time Discworld bangers

Lu-Tze listened to the senior monks, while leaning on his broom. Listening was an art he had developed over the years, having learned that if you listened hard and long enough people would tell you more than they thought they knew.

"I really must respectfully protest, Your Reverence," said the acolyte. "We have practiced for just such an emergency as--"
"Yeah, I know all about practicing procedures for emergencies," said Lu-Tze. "And there's always something missing."
"Ridiculous! We take great pains to--"
"You always leave out the damn emergency."

If you know the fact that Wen had a child with Time, it really makes the opening read differently. I mean, with the benefit of hindsight, it is clear to me that Wen just got railed and is riding the high.

For it is written: ‘I can’t be having with that kind of a thing.’
- Thief of Time, Discworld #26
Ah, the oldest anime trope. For real though, this character uses written scripture as an excuse. And I kinda read it less as something profound so much as he's trying to cold read someone. Like a psychic does.

Finished thief of time so spoilers for that book (also queued a bunch of stuff)
There were a lot of great parts and characters in the book but my favorite has to be the fifth horseman. Literal chaos personified and he delivers milk products. Wonderful. Enlightened.
Kaos was the start of the universe. It created space for the rules to be challenged, changed. It's something so human that even after being written out of history, Ronnie still had enough power of belief to fight the auditors. It's a force so strong it can ruin a city. Or one can run on it.
Its no wonder he settled in Ankh, a city that's in a constant state of barely controlled chaos.
Not good, not bad, just. Kaos.
But something from the beginning of the book stuck in my head because of the whimsical image it gave me and when I went back and read it with context-
ARRIVED WITH THE MORNING MILK?? ANCIENT FORM OF CHARITY!!
HAS HE BEEN OUT THERE DELIVERING BABIES TO GUILD HALLS??!
HES ANKH MORPORKS STORK
HER #1 FOSTER PARENT
LOST CHILDRENS FIRST GUARDIAN
Ok. Im good
But am I wrong or reading into this? Because it absolutely reads like the anthropomorphic personification of chaos keeps getting handed babies? for some reason? and just has to complete a job placement interview with them on the spot
Do you want to steal or catch rats? Mix chemicals or make clocks? Biikitt?Alright then, assassins it is!
And to take it even further than that, I might go so far as to say that Lu Tze was one of the children Kaos delivered. Surely abbotts need dairy products? and a being that can enter their perfect moment in time?
Even if he isn't, he read the fifth horseman like a picture book and played him like a fiddle (thats being played by someone that's good at playing fiddles)
I wish there was more on here about this book though. The ronnie tag is almost as sad as the jeremy one

Listening to the BBC radio adaptation of Pratchett’s Night Watch (which is great, incidentally, and I will link to below) and fully realising that not only is Vimes an influence on Endeavour’s Fred Thursday (that goes without saying and has been confirmed by Russell Lewis as well as being just obvious once you know both characters pretty well :) ), but a couple of Igor’s lines (ones definitely lifted from the book) are suspiciously close to the sorts of things Max says. I mean “I find that when I’ve got someone on the slab and had, you know, a rummage around...”... (We are talking about the young Igor working for the Watch, after all, and he’s pretty much a pathologist...)
Russell Lewis, you are a beautiful Pratchett-obsessed weirdo. ;-)
Here’s that link. Not all the episodes are up yet, but the first three are. The first episode’s only up until 16th May 2023 so be warned... https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/series/b010ns42
(Night Watch is fantastic. It also comes with some content warnings especially for things concerning childbirth and political oppression. Also also it itself is partly an AU of Les Miserables which means that Thursday is based on a (heroic but very cynical) character who is both Javert and Valjean at different points in this story which is PERFECT because of course Roger Allam has played both, one in the musical and the other in the radio adaptation :D ).

Discworld Fight Club 2023 Masterpost
Welcome to the biggest rumble the Disc has ever seen! Thrill as some of the turtle's premier brawlers, assassins, vampires, magic users, and tricksters face off in a five-round tournament to see who's the best of the best!
But first, please read the Rules:
Remember to vote based on who you think would win in a fight, not necessarily who is your favorite character. This is a tournament, not a popularity contest!
These fighters are good guys and shouldn't really bear any real animus toward each other, so consider this a more or less friendly event where no one is literally trying to murder anyone. So, when considering what weapons and techniques a character might use, think more in terms of how they'd incapacitate one another. That might involve using weaponry of course, but like, maybe Detritus shouldn't have access to the Piecemaker, is the kind of thing I mean, ha.
A contestant can win by knocking their opponent out, making them 'say uncle' so to speak, or even tricking them somehow! Think about the characters' strengths beyond, well, physical strength!
Successfully running away counts as a victory for the runner, not as a default win for the contestant left behind.
Reblogging and replying to the polls, especially with commentary on your reasoning for your vote, would be super fun and I hope a lot of people will do that! I tried to seed the bracket so the matchups are interesting, and I think there's some room for debate on a lot of them even at the start. Have fun!
So without further ado, let's have Discworld Fight Club 2023!

"Okay, here are the rules," said Lu-Tze, walking straight past. "Word one is, you don't call me 'master' and I don't name you after some damn insect. It's not my job to discipline you, it's yours. For it is written: 'I can't be having with that kind of a thing.' Do what I tell you and we'll get along fine. All right?"
"What? You want me as an apprentice?" said Lobsang, running to keep up.
"No, I don't want you as an apprentice, not at my age, but you're going to be so we'd both better make the best of it, okay?"
"And you will teach me everything?"
"I don't know about 'everything.' I mean, I don't know much forensic minerology. But I will teach you all that I know which is useful for you to know, yes."
