Lower Broadway Wednesdays, 1997-1999  // Daniel Nester

There were Wednesday afternoons – it always seemed to be Wednesdays – when I would walk into a public bathroom – an NYU basement, on a break from work at the film department, then Barnes & Noble or the Writer’s Room on Astor Place, where I would go not to write, but to stare at a cubicle wall and experience silence – and cry, uncontrollably, sound muffled in my hands, often to the point where my eyes would be bloodshot.   I would walk out, complaining about my contacts if anyone asked or seemed concerned. Other Wednesdays I walked to the Bath & Body Works on Lower Broadway to use the free samplers of hair gel, and there was always a young guy working there who would strike up a conversation with me, never about the hair gels or trying to sell me anything, but just ask friendly questions. It’s only now writing this that I realize he might have had a crush on me. One Wednesday while I gelled up my hair and looked in the mirror, he tried out a back massager on my shoulders. It felt good. I walked back to work, feeling – and there’s no other word to use here – fabulous.

I think the reason I'm currently obsessed with Anastasia the Musical is the fact that I can never get enough historical lower class romance. It's such an underrated fiction genre. Now don't get me wrong, I love a ball scene, but I find stories of the working class SO much more compelling as a whole. So that plus the adventure, plus the enemies-to friends- to lovers dynamic. AND the fact that it is a musical is the cherry on top. Also with Anastasia, you get the Best Of Both WorldsTM with act two taking place in the high society Russian culture in Paris.

So basically if you're into all of that stuff, you'll probably like Anastasia the Musical.

#xanadu posting #for context our auditions were just singing a chunk of one of three precut songs #fool which is a very high soprano song and was like the “kira audition” and what i auditioned with #evil woman which is a lower song and the villain song for melpomine which our “kira” auditioned with #and then all over the world which was for the boys tbh its a sonny song #so we all picked one of those to sing and just sang with the broadway track and sent it in via video #really easy and simple #but needless to say we were a LITTLE surprised. when we got the cast list #considering our audition songs HAHA #all considering my colead is doing fucking FANTASTIC with kira's part #she can hit those high notes wayyy better than she thinks he can she keeps psyching herself out #but she sounds stunning #and i get to opt up into the higher octave for sonny so i get to sing soprano anyway LOL

i really hate that most americans only associate japanese movies with weeaboo culture and film nerd stuff. like, I recommended Spirited Away to a student in film class because he wanted non-Western fantasy and he told me he doesn’t want to watch anime, because it’s too sexualized. i told him Spirited Away isn’t sexualized and is regularly considered to be one of the best films of all time, full stop, and he says he doesn’t care, he doesn’t like animation.

Idk much about that guy and whether or not he’s into the anti-intellectual stuff that a lot of people seem to be into rn, but that’s kind of what it felt like.
