Portrait of Jacques Darnaud, full-length, before a Mediterranean coast and the port of Genoa in the distance

Having been initially enlisted in the French Royalist army in 1777, Jacques Darnaud continued to serve in the Revolutionary Army on the Rhine and in Italy. No longer leading men into battle in April 1801 he was named commander of Genoa, returning to France in August 1802. Thereafter he was named a Baron of the Empire in 1809 and later, with the Bourbon Restoration in 1814, he was named an honorary lieutenant general. He was a Grand Officer of the Légion d'honneur and a Commander of Ordre de Saint-Louis. His name is among those engraved on the Arc de Triomphe.

Louis Gauffier 

Gauffier was a French artist who settled in Rome, but popular unrest following the execution of Louis XVI led him to flee with his wife to Florence. He could not receive patronage from France because he was branded a royalist, and this curtailed his career as a history painter. When Napoleon marched his troops into Italy in 1796 and occupied Florence in 1799, Gauffier painted officers’ portraits. He painted very beautiful landscape scenes of Napoleonic Italy, such as this painting.
