The Greek islands in the 50s through the lens of Robert McGabe
Katápola, Amorgós, 1960. Boat full of grapes arrives at the port. Due to the absence of good roads at the time, sometimes the boats were used for transfers even to different places of the same island.
Mýkonos, 1955. Fishermen take their nets out at dawn to dry and fix them. In the background one can spot Hotel Leto, one of the two first hotels built by EOT (Greek Organisation of Tourism) in Greece.
Sérifos. Windy meeting at the Chora´s fountain.
Naxos, 1957.
Mýkonos, 1957. Serious negotiation between a farmer who brought his produce to the Chora with his donkey and the shop owner Asimina Kousathana. Note the stand with the card postals in the background.
Linariá, Skyros 1957. Women wait at the harbour for ships to bring freshwater. Many Greek islands suffer from water scarcity to this day.
In Santorini, Father Nikolaos Kokkalakis founded the school of carpet making in order to create job opportunities for the local young women and keep them in the island.
Girl fills her tinplate with water while smiling at the camera. Mýkonos 1957.
A woman knitting stares back at the camera, Skyros 1957.

Achilles Recognized Among the Daughters of Lycomedes
By Paul Rubens
Rubens illustrated the moment when Achilles places the helmet on his head and grasps the significance of what he has done. His beloved Deidameia, with her sisters gathered around her, looks at him in dismay, aware of the drama about to unfold. Diomedes and Odysseus stand behind Achilles.

there was a post that you reblogged on another blog about how it would be possible for achilles to hide in skyros with the typical clothes of his time and you commented that the things you said were based on research you did to draw your design. i tried searching your tag to see if you had posted that design but the only art you posted doesn't show much of the clothing. that's why i wanted to ask if you don't have any other art in which mycenaean clothing is more visible! every skyros achilles i see is in peplos, so i was curious to see him in mycenaean clothes!
Here your Mycenaean Pyrrha!
My art style has changed since last time, so it might not be what you had in mind, but here it is! It's also not the same outfit as the other drawing, but that's because that first outfit was made simpler because the focus wasn't on it and I wanted something more effortful this time.
Personally, I liked this version more because I made him look more like a teenager, which matches the age that the sources give for Achilles in Skyros As I said in the post you read, I think it's a key factor as to why he was able to be among the girls there without being discovered for a considerable time.
If you have another request, don't feel shy! Like I said, I have no problem accepting requests. But this time I was so quick only because it's something I already had an idea about before, I can't guarantee speed for the other requests!

Here's my Sketch of the four horses of Helios and his son Phaethon.
The history of Helios'd horses is really a fun dive. If you look closely, the horses in the illustrations are actually very small. That is because miniature horses were bred for war in 800-500 BCE. Hailing from the island of Skyros, they are only 10 hands tall! (Pictured Below).
According to Ovid, the four immortal horses are Aethon, Eous, Phlegon, and Pyrois. In ancient greek they were 2 female horses in the front, Thunder and Lightning. Two male horses in the rear (Time and flame).
Helios is not the only one in ancient mythos to have horses. His two sisters, Selene (moon) and Eos (Dawn) ride the sky with him and both have four horses each. These make up the THE HIPPOI ATHANATOI, the immortal horses.
Alright, that's my history rant🐍💕

This little clip has so much to unpack. In it, we are told there was a city in the sky called Skyros. Sunny says "the Alicorn Land" and Spike, who we'd like to think would know better, doesn't correct her. Maybe he's still groggy? Love how they gave themselves that out. Up to this point, I thought that Opalene had come from Canterlot. Yes, she'd said she grew up with Celestia and Luna, but I'd discounted that as boasting. But now we are told there was a land of Alicorns called Skyros. Something that has been in many a fan theory in various forms.
A land/city where Alicorns came from does sound a lot like the ancient citadel of the Akkadians I've used in some of my stories. I even put a great tree in it. Which I'm sure is all coincidence. My city was based on fan theories about Celestia and Luna's origin, and my great tree was based on legends of world trees.
The first time I used an ancient Alicorn City was in Kitzumi's adventures through the looking glass.

Odysseus: And why have you come to Skyros?
Patroclus: I have come for the half of my soul, the reason I exist... I just want to be in his arms one last time before I embrace my destiny.
Dancers: Awwwww.
Deidamia: Pfff. As if someone could love someone as weak as him. Right, Pyrrha?
Achilles *crying in love*: That's my husband.

A man dressed as a “Yeros” teases an old lady during the Carnival festivities in the Greek island of Skyros. The island’s carnival celebrations can be traced back to Dionysian rituals and involve dressing up in goat skin and numerous heavy bells for men and traditional dresses for the women, hiding the face entirely with a mask made of goat skin and dancing.
