“Ch’ari. What are you doing.”

The aetheric silhouette that is the Warrior of Light freezes in the middle of hobbling across the hallway. “I am… getting… a drink?” He says. 

“Oh?” Y’shtola raises an eyebrow. 

His aether flickers. The shape inches forward slowly, as if she were a dinosaur and couldn’t see him if he moved really slow. “I am… getting a very specific drink. From… Othard.”

“Are you now.” 

“…You are getting me a very specific drink from Othard?” Ch’ari tries. 

Y’shtola reaches behind her for her staff, and Ch’ari turns and scuttles as fast as his body will take him back into his room where he’s supposed to be.

Alisaie scowls. “I am bored.”

“No kidding,” Ch’ari whines. “When are we allowed to leave?!”

“I am allowed to leave tomorrow. You will be staying here until you have resolved not to be a fool and throw your life away for a victory lap,” Alisaie snaps, and then her expression turns down. “Or at least until you can walk again.”

“Seems hypocritical to me. They’re letting you out early.”

“I’m almost healed!”

“By the loosest definition.”

“It wasn’t even a wound, Ari.”

“Hm.”

“Look—“ Alisaie says, pride in being Not Bedridden stoked by his dismissals, and pushes her way out of her bed at Dawn’s Respite to march over to Ch’ari’s bed, indignant. And still, notably, a bit shaky, after concentrated lightning magic left her too hurt to stand. Ch’ari still thinks they’re all stupid, every Scion, right back at them, for not tending to their own injuries well enough to heal themselves before pouring almost the entire Ragnarok’s worth of aether into him. Stupid, dumb, idiots. They’d already saved the universe at that point. We don’t need eight incapacitated scions when we could have had just the one. 

“You look like a baby amaro,” Ch’ari says, instead of voicing any of those thoughts. “Like a newborn foal. Damnation, looks like you’ll have to stay here and keep me company.”

Alisaie flicks him — gently, even though he’s not even got a head wound. “Ari. I promise we’re not going anywhere. And you know if you asked him to, Alphinaud would stay with you for days reading fantasy novels or textbooks at you for entertainment.”

His ears droop. “I know. But he needs to sleep.”

“And so do you.”

“And so do I,” Ch’ari grumbles in concession. “I am just not used to not moving. I want to kill something.”

Alisaie coughs out a startled laugh, and Ch’ari grins. “Gods, as do I, but we have our orders! Two weeks. No travel, no fights.”

“Sneak a coblin in here when you get out of this joint and I’ll pay for your sweets for a month.”

“Not a chance.”

“Not that I doubt your s-sSS-killed hands, Krile, I would never. But do bandages need changing thisoften?”

“In this specific case, yes,” Krile says, clearly not willing to entertain him while he chatters distractingly. “Might I remind you you were falling apart before we got to you with healing magics, and therefore you will be suffering the consequences for as long as a normal wound takes to heal naturally.”

“Peachy,” Ch’ari groans. He should have been better at avoiding that dumb voidsent Zenos summoned, but it always hid right out of his line of sight until it pounced. Clearly, a cheater, even if its master wouldn’t do a thing like that. Nah, he’d challenge him head-on, evening the playing ground until it was just strength against strength, no tricks, no unfair advantage. Pure, untouched adrenaline, bloodlust, the hunger for feeling alive. 

… Ch’ari will not miss him. But he will think of their encounters as long as it takes him to find something like it, if he ever does. Which is exactly what the prince wanted, drat. He should have taken Zenos to the Gold Saucer. Maybe he’d get really into chocobo racing instead of death matches. 

He’s jolted out of his thoughts by a sharp tug in his ribs. “Ow!”

“Sorry! Sorry,” Krile says, already casting a light soothing glow over the sticky mess there. Ch’ari buries his head further into the pillow with a groan. 

The door creaks. “My, someone sounds grumpy they’re being tended to,” comes a voice, and Tataru trots in with a small box in her hands. Ch’ari’s ears perk up. 

“Am not grumpy, I’m injured. What’s that?”

“Medicine,” Tataru says bluntly, and then gets a sly grin. “And a handful of pastry fish, fresh from the oven.”

“Tataru you’re my favorite. Have I ever told you you’re my favorite? You are. Hands down,” Ch’ari says, already sniffing the air to catch the smell, his tail whacking the edge of the bed. “I don’t even care that it’s bribery to get me to drink that foul tincture, I love you.”

Tataru laughs, bright and open, and even Krile huffs a bit in amusement.

Alphinaud is asleep when he wanders into the main rooms, and Ch’ari considers dropping something onto the table to wake him up, but decides against it. He’s not all that sure how mana works — or mana overexertion, or… well, Lyse called it a chakra, but Ari isn’t a monk, and he’s not sure what straining or breaking one of them entails. He just knows the kid needs to sleep a bunch to get his aether back, and Ari shouldn’t be startling him so bad he breaks something again. If that’s how that works. He’d rather not risk it. 

Instead, he wanders over to Estinien, who is brooding in his Dragoon Corner. Also seemingly asleep until one eye cracks open, trained on his approach. 

“Dragoon,” Ch’ari says.

“…Cat,” Estinien replies in greeting. Ari snorts, the joke he made about having nine lives clearly amusing or at least annoying the Elezen to this day. 

“Guarding your nest, are we? I didn’t think we’d see you stick around this long.”

Estinien grunts. “Aye. Under normal circumstances I’d rather be off by now. But as long as…” he frowns. It’s always difficult for him to differentiate between draconic instincts and his own, and then subsequently translate them into human words, something he and Ch’ari have only spoken of briefly when Nidhogg’s lingering presence wanted to clash with what was left of Hraesvelgr in Ch’ari’s body. Simultaneously feral and overtly made of higher thought, the presence of the dragon is as long-lived as the beasts themselves. “As long as my ward is in need of protection, I will stay,” he settles on. And then his expression squishes, pained. “And… the pink one threatened me if I were to leave without a clean bill of health.”

Ch’ari laughs, then covers his mouth quickly to muffle it. “Ah, the jailer. No escaping that.” 

“Indeed.”

“Raha, you need any help with anything?”

G’raha looks up from his books, surprised. The Warrior is standing over his shoulder, swath in bandages and a simple shirt and slacks, his tail swishing. “Do I need any help with anything?”

“Yes.”

“Well, no, I don’t think so… resigned to being monitored as we are, I have no new tasks which require my attention, and so…”

“Let me rephrase,” Ch’ari interrupts. “Please do you need help with anything.”

G’raha blinks. And then splits into a smile, ears giving a quick one-two wiggle. “My friend, I am quite sure we can find something to do. Something very calm and stressless, but something nonetheless. What is your opinion on magic circles?”

why do you return to the 2000s through ironically and mindlessly copypasting the aesthetic with no substance like so many others do. it feels so insincere and shallow and detached from any emotion. why can't anyone do it right? what about the old art's meaning, what the artists meant to do and convey, does it not matter?

I understand it can seem like a copy paste to you, but I do put a lot of care and emotion in these drawings! Yes, it does tribute to an animation and style era. But I do not replicate. If you take notice you'll see it's a modern self style

There were lots of artists in the 2000s which had wildly different styles actually! You have AlliKat's style which is drastically different from KaiDogRyu and it's also different from SSS Warrior Cats. What I try to say is that I appreciate all of them and have learnt from them to make a new style that carries the same feeling, but embracing the present days. I make my own designs about the newer characters exactly for that reason

I'm not sure what you meant with doing it right, but it's okay if this blog doesn't work for you. There are plenty of new amazing artists in the Warrior Cats fandom which are very worth taking a look~

On "Lady Loki" PSA: You mean Loki being Femme?

“Lady Loki” is NOT Loki being genderfluid. The name is a mixture of “Lady Sif” (because Sif’s title is “Lady” like “Lord”) and “Loki” because Loki stole Sif’s body after Ragnarok ensued, and trapped her in a dying old lady’s body. Loki first shows up possessing Sif’s body in Thor Vol. 3 # 5 back in 2007. Loki continued to use male pronouns in Sif’s body, but just gets misgendered by everyone else. And as much as I love aspects of Loki’s characterization in that era, having that plotline in this political climate would be awful, incredibly damaging, and way more problematic than anything the Loki show gets accused of. I need people to know what the fuck they’re talking about before they refer to wanting "Lady Loki" in the Loki show because this is what you're talking about.

I will be open and say I am not a fan of much of the majority of Thor comics. They are fucking annoying and read like some Gary Stu male fantasy because they’re always going off about how Thor is the fucking best and his plot armor makes him the only and best choice to be Asgard’s ruler despite there being other characters with similar qualities in Asgard but Thor’s “just better”. The misogyny is off the charts in these with all the ridiculously and impractically scantily clad “warrior” women that all want to fuck Thor and have little personality past that. I also loathe the “Loki’s just evil” crap. My fascination with them is more like gawking and wanting to be pissed off. Plus, I find pre-reincarnation Marvel comics!Loki to be a fascinating study of a Comics Code Authority/Hayes code era villain (and I kinda root for him because the narrative annoys me). He’s up there with all the Disney villains despite not originally being Disney.

In those pre-reincarnation comics that often piss me off, Loki is meant to evoke disgust and to “disturb” through his failure to be the epitome of manliness. Marvel has tried to distance themselves from that once they had their “Are we the baddies?” epiphany by retconning Asgard to be more progressive. It kinda annoys me because panels exist where they’re being queerphobic to Loki. To me, it’d feel more organic if Asgard was shown going through societal change rather than “We have always been progressive, what the fuck are you talking about?” But that's just me.

I remember when Loki was about to come out as bisexual in the comics on 2013 after becoming very popular largely due to Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Young Avengers #13 where he flirts with Prodigy, followed by Agent of Asgard revealing he's a genderfluid shapeshifter in 2014), queer organizations expressed concern over the whole “queer-coded villain á la Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs.” If you are not familiar with Buffalo Bill, he is the main antagonist from Thomas Harris’s very copagandic and transphobic book, Silence of The Lambs, the book with Hannibal Lecter (played by Anthony Hopkins who plays MCU!Odin lol) where he’s like “I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti. T-sss-tsss-tss.”

Buffalo Bill is said to not be a “real transgender”, whatever the fuck that means especially with all the policing around bodily autonomy, and some statistic about how transgenders are the least likely to be violent is shoehorned in, but everything about the character ends up being a queerphobic trope. The “difference” is that Jame Gumb “thinks” he wants to be a woman but doesn’t actually want to be (the transphobia in this book is off the charts).

I am glad Loki has gotten redemption arcs of sorts, because a lot of the tropes employed on comics!Loki just pissed me off. And I am glad MCU!Loki never went through the transphobic possession storyline in the name of being "comics-accurate".

The easiest way to represent genderfluidity in the MCU with a casting choice that predates Loki's coming out in comics would be through dialogue in the magic-less TVA. Have Loki say that her pronouns are she/her while looking the same because people can't shapeshift in real life.

I have seen criticism about the comics' "Genderfluid Shapeshifter" trope not being accurate. But even if it's not "accurate" to the real world, from what I've been told, Loki being a part of the genderfluid shapeshifter trope or that trope in general is not an issue, because lots of genderfluid and trans folks enjoy that kind of fantasy. And Marvel's Loki is based on a shapeshifter of the same name from Norse mythology that is most people's first introduction to the concept of genderfluidity (myth!Loki was my first exposure to the concept and they're a shapeshifter).

It's got all the staples of an immersive 2010's Youtube animation series: -Society of anthropomorphized (quadruped) animals -drama, betrayal - The token badass emo assassin character, Angel

-Magic (?) -Lore involving monsters birthed from turmoil between two deities - PHENOMINAL action scenes for their time -I can't think of anything else but SERIOUSLY LOOK AT THIS

i remember those old animation meme dramas where tweens would accuse each other of tracing/copying for taking inspiration (lookin at you, Sashley dramas trying to bring that back. fuck you) and like, as someone who's very hyper aware of my inspirations, i don't really get it?

like, i draw hair the way i do because i started drawing cats (because Warriors) and that means the way i draw hair tends to look like fur. but if we're just talking other artists, then-

i draw dewclaws the way i do because of an artist i was friendly with on Amino called Ottot. i tend to give characters under-hair when i can because of ActuallyRea/GinjaNinjaOwO/June. i try to minimize details and maintain mostly basic shapes because of both June and Little Witch Academia. i draw bird legs on people the way i do because of p1neapplerum. i draw wings the way i do because of sss-eriema. i color eyelashes because of June, Druid's Hollow, and my friend Strawbbiamz. i render because of SEVERAL artists i follow and so much of how i draw cats was because of Draikinator.

and yet my art doesn't look like ANY of the mentioned artists. kids were wildin' back in the day

god I really love the sss warrior cats rendition of the rusty vs longtail fight because in the book it is:

1. very clear that longtail is just an overly-confident young asshole trying to prove his strength and look cool in front of his peers

2. it reads like 2 teenagers having an incredibly dirty and dramatic fight in the school yard

3. the fight is done in like 10 seconds flat. in fact I feel wrong calling it a fight. it's a scuffle. a bit of a tussle. a quick scrap if you will.

Meanwhile in the animation, longtail absolutely DECIMATES this child. NO fucking mercy. and he seems to take some kind of sadistic joy in it. he looks VICIOUS. and he just fucking?? slaps spottedleaf out of his way like that??? it is, obviously, a much cooler fight (actually calling this a fight is wrong too. it's just longtail beating up this tiny child for 6 minutes straight and then losing anyway), and I completely understand why they wrote it this way (it made for some great animation!) but the contrast is HILARIOUS.

I really love your designs, especially Galacta’s one in the little Wish Library series you did! What was the thought/design process for it?

...Ahem. ^^ So, before I explain anything, I'm gonna repost the picture for anyone who's curious:

These were the first 'Wish Library' designs that I did, and they were inspired by Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous...Galacta in particular was inspired by Padparadscha (can you tell? I hope you can).

As usual with my AUs, I wanted to do something new and different, and the elegance of the HnK characters made me want to try a softer and more mysterious image for Gal. His armor is muted and lower-contrast, his wings are angular and artificial-looking, his smaller mask is more reminiscent of a 'harlequin' than a 'warrior'. But the biggest change, and the one I spent the most time on, was his body coloration.

I was doing some research beforehand to try to get new ideas, and I noticed on the wiki that Gal's first official artwork depicts him with two 'skin' colors: his feet are pink, but his body is blue. I used to think it was just shading, and those colors were probably chosen to give that impression, but they're also pretty clearly distinct. One of the Celebration Pictures from Star Allies also has him in pink and blue, cementing it as a design choice, not just a trick of the light.

Since I'd never noticed or used that design choice before, I decided to do it here. ^^ And I thought adding some big, complicated hair like Padpa's would give me more room to play with both colors on the character's otherwise tiny body.

Speaking of which...that really tripped me up (can you tell? I hope you can't ^^;). I'm so used to Galacta Knight being one of the big, loud, showy characters-- and in the context of this AU, he still is, but in a different, more delicate way. And at the time, I don't think I had quite figured out how to do that yet...his outfit is a little lacking, and tbh I'd like to work on it some more.

...You know what? Maybe I will...I'm in a bit of a weird place with Kirby AU's right now: SSS was introduced, but now it needs to be developed; I still haven't officially ended DreamAll; KE is kinda half-baked...this may be the one chance I'll get to round out this little series. After all, there WAS one more design I was supposed to post before I dropped it...I lost confidence, and decided to keep it to myself. ^^; But looking at it now, it's not really that bad; probably just needs a little texturing...if I do decide to pick Wish Library back up, you'll see it soon~

How did you both first hear about warrior cats? Can you tell us what your favorite part of your written mythology is?

LYNX: I remember finding in the teenagers' section of the library a copy of the Forgotten Warrior. It looked interesting because cat, but I didn't get it for reasons I can't remember. I later remember stumbling across SSS Warriors while I was just beginning to browse the internet with less safety rails, and that's what got me to finally pick up Into the Wild.

My favorite part of the mythology is-

DULLARD: I personally got swept up into it by a friend in middle school, and it was all downhill from there. I dropped the series in...high school? I think? Only to return once I was near graduation. Solely for fan content, you understand. The books are forever bad to me now.

As for the mythology... I'd say the various folklore characters. Thlainra and Yrrun in particular, for wildly different reasons. Yrrun appeals to my love of eldritch Silent Hill monsters and Thlainra is just a super fun concept of a "something is very off about this force of good(?)" character.

i have learned today that i am not a fan of drawing liepard!

reasons for why i picked each character to be which pokemon under the cut:

darkstripe as liepard! i’ve always seen darkstripe as super scrawny, and liepard probably fits that description the most out of all the fully evolved cat pokemon. aside from maybe meowstic, but meowstic doesn’t really fit him in the slightest. also, dark type, so!

redtail as pyroar! this just felt right, honestly. i mentioned in part 1 that i made spottedleaf a pyroar specifically because redtail was going to be one too. if you look at part 1, you’ll notice that spotted and red have the same patterns, just with slightly different colors :D

longtail as liepard! this is almost the exact same reason as darkstripe, i always saw longtail as skinny, so liepard seemed fitting! one thing i like about this design is getting to experiment with that nose-eye-mask thing liepard has. i also like that it... really shows that i was an SSS warrior cats kid!

yellowfang as perrserker! i started brainstorming about this AU in 2019, before sword and shield came out. i originally wanted yellowfang to be an alolan persian due to the flattened face, but then sw/sh came out, and perrserker was a way better fit! a lot more frazzled, a lot more fluffy, and still has the flat face that alolan persian does!

sandstorm as kantonian persian! come on, it fits her sassiness perfectly. not to mention, jayfeather was really easy to envision as a kanto persian, too. side note, picking a color for the inside of persian!sandstorm’s ears was pretty difficult, since i didn’t intend for sandstorm to be a shiny, and persian’s main (and arguably only) difference between regular and shiny is the inside of the ear’s color.

How weird cat books shaped my life: a personal Warriors essay

I think we all have something we got into at a young age and we're still a fan of today. Sometimes that thing is way, way more important than you even realise.

When I was a young child, I had pretty stereotypical interests - I liked doodling, watching cartoons, and reading books about animals. I always did like animals a lot, especially cats, I was always living with at least one cat while growing up. The first two I remember were Moët, he was fluffy and timid and ginger-and-white, and Hemingway, or more commonly called Hemmy as nobody wants to shout "Hemingway" up the street when they want their cat to come home.

When I was around 7, I was taking a look around the children's section of my local library and saw something I'd noticed my older sister reading recently. Warrior Cats: Into the Wild. I just wanted it because I liked the cover and I liked cats, and my parents allowed me to take it despite it being rated 9+. I think that, if they'd been stricter, I might have been an entirely different person - who knows though? I just know that those Warriors books hugely impacted my interests and hobbies.

I started reading and god, I was obsessed. There was something about the culture and history of these fictional wild cats that was so intriguing to me, but still simple enough for my young mind to digest. Being a homeschool kid who hadn't fully accessed the internet yet, I had no friends at all, so my family had to look at all my terrible drawings of fighting cats and endure me talking about them.

There was something I always wanted though: a Warriors TV show or a movie. Ten years later we still don't have that, despite all the talk of a movie being in production. Where the hell did that go? But luckily, fans of the books had started making their own adaptations. Enter the late 2000s and early 2010s, the time of SSS Warrior Cats - an animated Youtube series based on the first book. I asked my mum if I could watch it and she allowed me to, opening up the door to a whole new portion of the internet.

Gone were the days of playing Flash games on the Cbeebies website, I had youtube! This was a massive inspiration to me, I decided I wanted to be an animator. Obviously I wasn't as skilled as the SSS team, I still don't think I am - but I tried.

But over time, each member of the SSS team quit, and the channel became a wasteland with the series left unfinished. What was I to watch? How would I satisfy my desire for edgy animated cats? That was when I found Dimstar's Past, a series based on Warriors OCs, which also inspired me a lot. I think the creator turned out to be homophobic, which is a massive shame - but "separate the art from the artist", as they say.

I'd now seen these OCs, and I'd seen my sister writing stories about characters she liked, so what if I were to create my own Warriors and tell their story? While I'd written a few short, low-quality stories in the past, as most kids do, I think Warriors fully inspired me to write. I created "Rootstar's Past", a complete and obvious rip-off of Dimstar - but the story still exists in my mind, albeit very altered since then. I never even finished the first version. As I learned and became a better storyteller, I created better characters and more thought-out stories. Eventually I moved on from cats and wrote about more "human" characters - a lot of the time they aren't actually human, but they act like it.

Warriors also got me into roleplay, through playing Roblox and exploring forums, which further developed my writing and "impulsive storytelling" skills. I really miss the old Warriors Roblox games, like Lake Territory - morphs and maps may be better these days, but they don't hold the same charm at all. (For those who don't play Roblox - a morph is an object that the player can take the appearance of, though a button or GUI, to create looks that wouldn't be possible with the regular avatar editor.)

I remember how I met my first real friend through Warriors roleplay. She was older than me, I was only around 9 when she was 16, but we got on surprisingly well. Me and my sister have the same 7-year age gap, so I was used to it. We shared other interests too; Five Nights at Freddy's, Undertale, and later Harry Potter. Sadly she was banned from Roblox and I never saw her again. I hope she's okay, whatever she's doing nowadays. I fondly remember our extremely angst-ridden characters - poor Soul, she could never get a break.

I made so many memories in those games. Playing in "Fan Clans" with magical powers, laughing at newbies who'd never read the books (don't get me wrong, I wasn't a rude person, but I was badly influenced by those who were), making the most complex morphs possible, creating cat romances, making drama... I want something like that again, but unfortunately roleplays don't seem to have any heart to them these days. Or maybe I'm the one who's changed? I don't know for sure.

There's one more interest that Warriors brought to me, although it's a very childish one. I won't go into too much detail because of that, I don't think anyone will care that much, but it does belong in this post.

As well as animation, there was another thing I saw people making short films and series with - Littlest Pet Shop toys, those stylised animal figures that Hasbro makes. They're not everyone's cup of tea, but I have to admit I fell for them and ended up collecting them. With the cats I made several Warriors fanseries and posted them on my mum's youtube channel, where they remain to this day. They're all unlisted or privated though, and I don't plan to show them to anyone, they were genuinely terrible. Maybe if I'm very drunk one day, or I don't care about my reputation, or someone pays me for it.

These days, Warriors doesn't hold quite as much significance in my everyday life. It still means a lot to me though - I like learning about the new characters, making my own, and doing art and animation for the community. It was my first fandom, and still my most consistent. I imagine its importance to me will only decline over time as I grow up and find new interests, but who knows? Maybe it'll stay with me forever.

Warriors probably made me into a furry, at least indirectly. I can never forgive it for that.

So what else am I doing? What fandoms am I in? I like Doctor Who, vampires, and I'm studying Digital Media in college, if that's of any interest to anyone. I still play Roblox and collect LPS, and I animate (very slowly).

Oh, and it's my birthday. Happy birthday to me. I'm 17 now.

kasjdhflkd when i was little i fuckin loved the swiftpaw “in the end” one. also idk if this one was prior to 2014 but there was this one tigerstar and darkstripe one to “andy, you’re a star” that i really loved but i don’t think it’s on youtube anymore, unless someone reuploaded it. i just remember the  “andy, you’re a staaaaaaaaaaar” line where the choir kicks in was, like, darkstripe looking up at tigerstar at the gathering where he announced he was the leader of thunderclan, and i thought that was super clever. the timing of that shot was really good, too.

12. Is brambleclaw a good main character?

the first few books of the tnp he was fine if a little boring, but when he started training with tigerstar and hawkfrost in the dark forest he completely lost me. his whole little arc in the first series was rejecting tigerstar, like even as a little kid?? so why would he do a complete 180 like that?? completely regressive. also i don’t like him as leader and hes abusive to his wife and kinda shitty to his son, so. bye buddy, hope you never get your body back
