honestly, there is SO MUCH good RWRB fic out there, I'd be here all day if I listed all of the fic authors/fics I recommend, but my tag with RWRB fic recs is here and I'm going to point you in the direction of the excellent @rwrbficrecs blog for curated lists of fic recs as well.

Some of my personal favourite RWRB fic authors are (and this is a very biased list, they are my friends, I've beta read for them all but for the most part I loved their writing before I "met" them so there is some level of objectivity here):

@clottedcreamfudge (clottedcreamfudge) for her very specific brand of humor, feelings and sex

@three-drink-amy (allmylovesatonce) for Feelings TM of the angst flavour but always with the pay off of a very happy ending (she also writes Tarlos fic, so you may have read some of hers?)

@athousandrooms (athousandrooms) for fluffy feelings and so much love

and if you're familiar with my Tarlos writing, you are probably also familiar with @welcometololaland (lolaland) who has some stellar RWRB AUs with the same combination of snappy banter and feels that her Tarlos fics have

(Some of) My fave fics of 2022

So, I only joined ao3 in June/22, but I've loved it so much, both reading and writing for it. It truly gave me life. So I thought I'd do a little rec post with my favourite things I read on ao3 last year.

They are mainly RWRB with one outlier for Heartstopper, the fandom that brought me to ao3 in the first place.

I'm sticking with things that were published in 2022, just to have some sort of system. And I'm limiting myself to 5 or I'd be here forever! There's just so much good stuff out there, what a privilege to be able to read people's work like that, for free, at the tips of my fingers.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Yellow Curtains, by iphigenias (Heartstopper, T) - a canon divergence, where Nick and Charlie don't kiss at Harry's party. Nick takes his time to figure himself out, there's poetry, and it's lyrical and beautiful. The last couple of lines (before the texts) give me goosebumps every time I read them.

Never Did Run Smooth by the queen CCF (RWRB, E) - an AU, which is my favourite kind of fic, where Alex and Henry are best friends and end up in a reality show together and fall in love (well, Alex does). Pining is my Achilles heel and Henry pines SO HARD in this, it's amazing.

Route 11 by LolaLand (RWRB, E) - It's a public transport AU! There's lots of banter and chatting, and a slow build up of their feelings, which I love. It's also set in London (hooray!), and I once saw a bus catch fire just like the one in this story, and I love it when a story feels so close to life. Which brings me to the next fic...

Green Means Go by indomitablelove (RWRB, E) - Alex is an exchange student in the UK, he meets Henry at a traffic light party, and, well... I love this for lots of reasons, but having Alex experience Freshers week really resonates! It has a great dancing sequence, which is one of my favourite things in a fic.

to the victor, the spoils and the prequel/sequel What, like it's hard? by railmedaddy (RWRB, E) - Alex and Henry as lawyers AU! It has everything: a great twist, excellent smut, and a universe that just keeps on giving.

The pause on the other end of the line tells Henry that Pez hasn’t revealed his masterplan to Bea. “You left Pez in Rome?”

“Why would I leave him?” Henry asks, perplexed. “He left me. He’s probably on an extravagant yacht in Mallorca, embroiled in a bridge tournament with several incredibly wealthy Spanish women.”

“That’s very specific.”

“But terribly on brand,” Henry insists. “In any case, he didn’t tell me where he was going, only that he wanted me to get out of my comfort zone.”

“Oh, I’ll kill him with my bare hands,” Bea threatens, which Henry hates to admit is incredibly endearing. “He left you alone?”

“Well, not alone..."

“He left you with a stranger?!”

“Sort of,” Henry says quickly. “Although, I must admit that—”

“Are you being held against your will, Henry? Because you should—”

“What? No, Bea, I’m fine.”

“I’ve seen ‘Taken’,” Bea says seriously. “I know how this goes.”

“Bea, I promise you,” Henry repeats. “If Alex is in the human trafficking business, he’s atrocious at his job. He can barely read a train timetable and he doesn’t know a single word of French.”

“Is French really necessary for human trafficking?” Bea asks, apparently still confused. Henry doesn’t blame her, he’s still a little confused by the Alex situation.

“It is if you’re in France.”

“Right,” Bea says, apparently still unconvinced. “I think you better explain.”

(sorry, it's not sunday and there are way more than seven sentences here, so I couldn't even pretend. this is a little play on canon but in europe).

“Did that man just say ‘sweat drop down my balls?’” Henry asks, mouth agape as he stands completely still.  “Hell yeah,” Alex yells back. “But you’re not gonna get sweaty at all if you stand still!” Henry gives him a very forced smile and starts to bob up and down and Alex wants to scream. He knows Henry can do better than this. Such a sexy, sexy man can't be that bad at dancing.

“He really doesn’t dance, does he?” Siobhan giggles in his ear a minute later as she, Fiadh and Saoirse pass them, hands in the air as they dig their way deeper into the throng. Over their heads, he sees Maeve pretending to slap Freya’s ass as she twerks, two hands on her knees.  “He’ll get there!” Alex yells back with renewed confidence. “Come on, Henry, loosen up.” “It’s a bit hard to loosen up when you—” “Three, six, nine, damn you’re fine!” Alex sings, along with sixty other people in the club. Henry looks at him like he’s grown an extra head, which makes Alex wonder what Henry would have done if he’d yelled out the iconic lyrics to Azealia Banks’ '212', which had been playing when they first walked in. In response, Alex pulls him towards the floor. “It’s telling you to get low!” “My knees aren’t eighteen anymore, Alex!” Alex, who has obediently dropped down in accordance with the lyrics, stares up at Henry from dick-height. “Are you saying you wouldn’t get on your knees for me?”

feeling a little down this week so pepping myself back up to write more eurotrip. here's a weekly snippet if you (like me) are surprised to see more words appearing in the google doc.

“I’m not going to make you kiss me if you don’t want to,” Henry points out as he sits up, mirroring Alex’s position. There’s a ridiculous urge to laugh bubbling up in him, but Alex might actually murder him if he gets the giggles.

“But I do want to!”

Henry coughs in an attempt to cover up his poorly disguised snort. “You quite literally just said you didn’t want to anymore.”

“It was hypothetical—”

“Oh,” Henry interrupts. “I understand. You’re stalling.”

“I'm not stalling!”

“Alex, are you…nervous?”

Alex scoffs. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Have you ever kissed a man before?”

“Yes, but that’s like…not even relevant.”

“Would you like me to show you how I like to be kissed?” Henry asks coyly. He has a lot of questions about why he feels so attracted to Alex acting so petulant, but that’s a future-Henry problem. Perhaps he likes having his sanity tested on some level. He tries to push it to the back of his mind as he reaches out and takes Alex’s hand, coaxing him closer. 

“Now you sound like you’re out to judge my technique,” Alex protests, practically pouting. He doesn’t shrink away though, allowing himself to be pulled into Henry’s orbit.

“I can’t help it if you’re a bad kisser,” Henry teases, watching as Alex’s eyes flash dangerously before dropping to Henry’s lips. Somehow, they’re both gradually leaning closer together.

“You’re the worst,” Alex retorts, which is completely at odds with his actions. “Bet you’re gonna kiss me just so you can make fun of me later.”

“Christ,” Henry breathes, nudging his nose against Alex’s cheek before he feels Alex’s hand cup the back of his neck. “You’re as thick as it gets.”

just doing my random little eurotrip snippet to keep myself accountable (we're somewhere between 55 and 60k and yet to finish chapter 6/17)

“So, you’re taking photos of me?” Henry asks, apparently perplexed.

“Do you not want me to?”

“No, that’s fine,” Henry replies. “It’s just…why?”

Alex wants to strangle him. “How else am I going to convince everyone that I managed to get you to go on a date with me? You think Nora is just gonna believe that? No way.”

Henry looks a little shocked. “Sorry, what?”

“Nora is a demon sent from the depths of hell to annoy the living shit out of me,” Alex deadpans. “Yeah, I’m serious.”

“I meant the date part,” Henry says weakly, as if he wasn’t the one who fucking came up with the idea of a real date. “Is that what this is?”

“Isn’t that what you said this morning?” Alex practically wails. He’s confused and frustrated and wants to fling himself into the moon.

“Oh,” Henry breathes, chewing his lip in what Alex now recognises as a nervous habit. “I didn’t know you were being serious—”

“Jesus tits, I can’t deal with you,” Alex groans, throwing his hands over his eyes.

“I— I’m sorry?”

When Alex takes his hands away from his face, Henry is giving him a perplexed look. Before he can say anything else which will make Alex want to commit several violent crimes, he says, “I’m going to cool off,” and promptly throws himself overboard.

—TK actually headbutts the ceiling. Hard. “Oh my god,” Carlos yelps as TK winces, one hand flying to the top of his head on instinct. He looks up and realises that the ceiling is way closer than it should be. “TK, are you okay?” “Yeah,” TK insists, even though when he opens both eyes the room looks a little fuzzy around the edges. “I’m fine. Keep going.” “I am— What?” Carlos asks incredulously. “TK, you could have a concussion!” “I don’t!” TK protests, even though he actually has no idea. The fact is, he might die if Carlos pulls out right now. “I’m fine.” “You almost put your head through the ceiling,” Carlos argues. “I can’t—” “You can’t or you don’t want to,” TK pouts. “Because I want to.” “TK, you’re leaning to the side,” Carlos points out drily. TK shakes his head. “No, I’m not.” “Yes, you are,” Carlos insists. “And stop shaking your head. Oh my god, aren’t you the one with the medical training?”

Eurotrip (alex is mad that he cockblocked himself)

Henry’s gut instinct is to apologise, but he holds his tongue. Instead, an incredulous laugh bubbles up in his throat. “Would you like me to insult you instead?” he asks, trying to keep his expression neutral despite the fact that he can feel his cheeks twitching. “No,” Alex mumbles. “But maybe you could agree to a blowjob in a confessional, or something.” “We are not having sex in a cathedral,” Henry replies, biting his lip in an increased effort to keep the laughter in. “I’m as agnostic as they come but that is a touch too sacrilegious for me.” “Fine,” Alex replies, his expression softening as he runs his tongue over his bottom lip. Bloody hypocrite, Henry thinks. “A castle then. A non-religious monument. A museum!” “Most of those places have tight security,” Henry points out. “I’d rather take my chances at the hostel.” “Not with Prudence around,” Alex mutters darkly. “She’s everywhere.” “She’s probably here right now,” Henry teases. Alex pretends to look under the table, then ducks his head back into view. “Either that or she’s been kidnapped.” “Alex, you can’t say that—” “I can and I will,” Alex insists. “But it doesn’t change that we have two more nights of forced celibacy before I can do some very bad things to you.”

SNIPPET - WHEN IN ROME AKA. EUROTRIP (TO BE POSTED 4 OCTOBER)

“This is my atrociously handsome friend, Henry,” Pez proclaims, even though Alex didn’t really need the description because he was fucking born with eyes. He’s vaguely aware that it’s probably strange that his first thought is that Henry is beautiful, but Alex has never had an issue with appreciating good-looking people and he’s very comfortable in his heterosexuality, thank you very much.

Henry gives him a small smile that looks a bit tense around the edges and Alex suddenly feels awkward because he doesn’t offer his hand to shake, picking up his short glass with both hands instead. Alex coughs awkwardly and takes a sip of his Peroni.

“Er, hi,” Henry says, rotating the glass in his hands. Alex wonders why he’s doing that. He imagines that it’s going to make the drink very warm. “I’m sorry,” Henry adds, cringing slightly, “it’s a bit uncomfortable when Pez introduces me like that.”

Pez snorts inelegantly and takes a sip of his own drink. “You think you’d be used to it, Hazza,” he says, waving a hand like Henry is some sort of irritating fly. “I only do it every second time.”

“What’s your other go to?” Alex asks, grateful for the distraction. He can feel a surging nervousness rolling off Henry in waves and wonders what his fucking problem is.

“Diabolical sex god,” Pez replies without a hint of irony, and Henry makes a sound like he’s choking on his tongue. Alex wonders how on earth someone so awkward could be an accomplished lover. Not that he’s thinking about it.

Henry gets to his feet – infuriatingly elegantly – and stretches his arms above his head. “Thank you,” he says softly, catching Alex’s gaze before he digs his sunglasses case out of his pocket. “I needed that.”

“I was kinda surprised,” Alex admits, fumbling with his backpack to find his own sunglasses, before the train lurches again and he has to lunge for the nearest handrail. “I thought you said sleeping was not really your thing.”

“It's not usually,” Henry says, pushing his sunglasses up his nose before snapping the case closed and throwing it in his bag. “But I barely slept last night.”

“Why?” Alex asks, in a way which is probably quite rude.

Henry shrugs. “A few reasons,” he admits quietly. “I was having difficulty…handling the tension between us.”

“Tension?”

“In the pool.”

Alex finds himself at a crossroads. He could keep talking as if he knows exactly what Henry is referring to, but suddenly he’s unsure whether Henry is alluding to the almost-kiss, or just the tension in general; the awkwardness they spoke about that morning.

“Oh,” he says instead, diverging from his plan to ask about the kiss. “Well, things are not awkward anymore, right?”

“Right,” Henry agrees, although the response sounds weaker than Alex anticipates.

A random passenger to his left catches his gaze and winks. Alex isn’t quite sure how to respond to that.

hello anon 💜 first up, i noticed you sent this to a few people and i just want to say thank you on behalf of everyone for getting behind writers and asking about their projects! that's really sweet of you and i know most people love talking about their writing so i'm sure you made a lot of people happy with this initiative :) using the anon function for good!

storytime but i have really been struggling with writing the last couple of months, mostly because i've been crazy busy with work (actually performing weirdly well but fuck capitalism) and social stuff. it's finally starting to quiet down - i think next weekend is the first weekend with free time since christmas, so i'm super keen to just...chill. maybe then i can actually work on writing!

as for wips...i have many but only a couple i'm actively working on right now.

Eurotrip (aka. When in Rome) - RWRB. i really wanted to finish this before may, but it's going super slow. I'm currently writing chapter 8 or 17, and my aim is to write at least 10 (but probably more like 14) chapters prior to posting. i'm really proud of myself for not giving up on this one because it's a mammoth and i started writing it in...2021 :/ but there's still a long way to go. i have art by @stardisnight to go with it, so that gives me precious motivation. also, the timeline of this fic vaguely resembles a lone star season right now so i need to work that out before i post.

Call Me (By My Name) - Lone Star. a co-write with @rmd-writes, it's just chugging along but as per usual we put no expectations on ourselves so there is no real timeline for completion.

10 Things I Hate About You AU (aka. Not Now But Soon) - Lone Star. i keep thinking about this and not writing it, but every now and then i get a strike of inspiration and go back and add to the doc. i actually DNF'd this ages ago, but i keep going back to it, so hopefully it gets done before the new season airs.

The Ring In 2.0 - Lone Star. calling this a wip because technically i have about 3k in the doc, but i swore myself off starting this before eurotrip is finished. i'm chomping at the bit though, the original ring-in was one of the easiest fics for me to write because it's so silly and fun and the chat with @dustratcentral is everything to me.

A Random Idea I Got From A Writing Prompt and I Pitched to @celeritas2997 - Lone Star. okay. hear me out. it could be short. 10k MAX. i have time for this. i promise. it's an austin au with a super stupid premise and i just. think. it. would. be. funny!!!! let me live. take me back to the ring in days where i didn't have any expectations of myself.

1. 1k fics or 100k fics? look. it would be better for everyone me if i wrote 1k fics. but i know myself. it has to be 100k. besides, i couldn't leave @three-drink-amy alone in the overwriting club.

2. fuck you (affectionate) with your crunchy green grapes, i'll never get over that. i pick mango because grapes are a tummy hurt culprit (even though i love them).

3. i know you're setting me up, but i'm cat man carlos all the way (and i know you agree with me because lucky in meet you after dark is EVERYTHING to me). like he doesn't hate dogs or anything, in fact i think he likes dogs. but carlos would just vibe with a cat so well (makes sense, tk being a feral stray, after all). i co-sign @liminalmemories21 most recent comment on the rainbow fish. we're drivers of the cat-owner-carlos train, everyone hop aboard!

4. smut on the elliptical is my go to but i will say i have a new workout regime and the elliptical is sadly no longer my friend (which is also why i'm reading a lot less fic these days). so i guess i'm gonna have to find another quasi-inappropriate place to read smut.

5. nice trick question. billy tyson and charlie swan are the same person and we all know it (charlie swan having turned into a vampire and moved to...texas (?) as part of his immortal cover story).

6. comfort movie used to be v for vendetta which is not comforting at all, i just love it. it's probably set it up. comfort show is veronica mars (lone star if i only watch tarlos/126 funny scenes and not the rescues because they stress me out). comfort book is rwrb, hands down.
