Rani Takes on the World : Beyond Bannerman Road (1)
After watching the minisode from 2020 called Farewell Sarah Jane, you can't help but think you want to see all these characters back. Lucky for me, when I saw it, this boxset had just come out, and I have to say I was impressed.
Every story is different and better than the last, the characters' evolution is perfectly managed considering the big gap between the TV show and the events from these three stories. It really has the ambition to be a true successor to the Sarah Jane Adventures by putting Rani as the front woman and working on very qualitative scripts.
I honestly cannot wait for the next one to come out and I sincerely hope it catches up on the high expectations this boxset helped build within me.
Here is a story by story review, beware some spoilers here and there, even though I made my best to make it spoiler free.
Here Today
I only have one word for this one: wow. First of all, the time loop is well executed and the urgence of the situation is very well conveyed by the twists, the characters and the music.
I can't not mention the jaw-dropping scene at the end of the first time loop. Absolutely chilling. You have to listen to it to understand how much of a shock it is.
You don't have a second to yourself when listening to this one, the story just takes you and you have to get along.
Destination: Wedding
I'm not gonna lie, it was kind of hard for me to get into this one at first but in the end I loved it so much more than the pilot! You can easily guess the solution to the mystery but never without a doubt.
Gita is just the perfect comic character, every single sentence of her is an instant punchline, and she's also got a lot of heart.
Rani seems to be kind of in a young adult life crisis, because once again she's comparing herself to her same aged peers, even more so in this one with the pressure of her mother onto her. These are themes that resonated with me a lot since I am approximately the same age as Rani is supposed to be in this and I actually am going through all of this.
Also, I wasn't sure I understood it correctly in the first story but now it's clear: Phoenix is a non-binary person! Yay! And they're dating Clyde, a major character!
In the end this one was pretty enjoyable even though it had a lot less action and tension than the one before, but the character work and the mysterious plot make it an absolute banger!
The Withching Tree
Wow, this one was definitely my favourite! So chilling! I started listening to it during a night road trip and it was really frightening!
The plot twist is really surprising and every new happening is a shock.
I really liked that this episode was kind of an episode of Rani's podcast, I hope they do that on the second series as well.
It was very well orchestrated to make the tension build up to the great reveal, which is so satisfying to listen to. Honestly a great piece of drama.
This is the first time I had heard about Tyler Steele because I didn't listen to any of the Torchwood stuff, so at first I was like "Who does he think he is? Why is he so ok with aliens?" but then I looked him up and it made a lot more sense.
I also loved that the Blue Box Files were being mentioned since I'm also currently listening to Doctor Who Redacted so it was a really nice touch from Big Finish to make Rani and Samira talk about them!

‘...Producer David Richardson says: “Was it really two years ago that we were all locked away in our homes, unable to mingle in the outside world? It feels like a lifetime, or like it was yesterday, or it never happened!
“It was the worst of times but also, for me in my little bubble, in some ways the best of times because it meant that with the TV and film industry shut down indefinitely, David Tennant had availability to work with us! Tenth Doctor, Classic Companions was recorded towards the end of a big recording block – we’d pitched the premise of the set to David and he couldn’t resist the idea of the Doctor reuniting with some old friends.
“It was also clear that David was delighted to be working with Doctor Who legends from his own childhood – Louise, Sarah, Sophie and John received the warmest of welcomes and they in turn were thrilled to be working with David.”
SPLINTERS BY John Dorney opens the set...
With the stories being commissioned in lockdown it meant John had a short turnaround on his script to fit in with David Tennant’s new-found availability. John explains: “With a longer deadline you can often end up trying to second guess yourself for ages but with a shorter one you’ve just got to decide, ‘Well, what do I want to do?’ Often, it can be just as good, if not better, with a shorter turnaround. And, to be honest, this is one of my favourite things that I wrote during lockdown.
“I didn’t have ages to run around trying to work out what I wanted it to be, exploring everything, and I feel it actually works better because of that.
“One of my highlights was a joke that I’ve been playing about with for ages that I knew was a Tenth Doctor gag but I’d never found a spot for it. I eventually managed to get it in here because it was the perfect place for it – it was now or never!
“Also, the opportunity to write for the Tenth Doctor is always great. It’s such a fun thing to do, and pairing him Leela was wonderful. When you’ve got a couple of really great actors, like David and Louise, you want to put something new in there for them, and see what interesting angles you can explore.”
THE SECOND story of the set is The Stuntman by Lizzie Hopley...
“With so many fabulous actors being available during lockdown Big Finish was understandably making the most of them. The brief was ‘old companions with K9’. We put up a bit of a fight for who got who! There was a bidding war and I ‘won’ David Tennant, Sarah Sutton and John Leeson. Now that was an exciting email to read!”...
ACE RETURNS in the third episode, Quantum of Axos by Roy Gill...Roy tells Vortex: “Writing this felt like being a kid on Christmas Day! Like you’re mixing up all your Doctor Who toys, teaming Ace with K9 and making up a new story!
“I’ll always jump at the chance to write for David Tennant: he’s  so nimble, deft and mercurial as a performer. And I’ve always loved K9 – he’s a robot dog, how could you not? Plus Ace was pretty much ‘my’ companion when I was growing up watching Doctor Who. Those seasons with Sylvester really show her mature and change in a way that was relatively unusual for a companion then, so it was an extra thrill to write for her.”
What was in the brief from Matt? Roy replies: “It just said the Tenth Doctor, Ace and K9...”...
JUST AS delighted to be joining the Tenth Doctor is Sophie Aldred, Ace herself, who admits it was hugely exciting when she got the message during lockdown asking if she would like to do an audio with David Tennant. Sophie says: ”It was so bizarre because at the beginning of lockdown I thought, ‘Right... how am I going to sort things out so I can keep working?’ So I bought myself a microphone, although I didn’t know what I was doing at first – like most of us, I guess. People had often said that my airing cupboard was actually very good acoustically so I turned this tiny little place into a studio! I took some of the shelves out, put my microphone in there, and I used the towels and sheets because, of course, they’re really good for dampening the sound. And then I got some woollen material, sewed it all together and put it on the walls, before I started learning the technical side of recording which took a little time...
“It would have been absolutely lovely to see David in person, of course, but it’s almost as good to hear his voice in your ears! So there was me in the airing cupboard with my laptop and microphone and we had a bit of a laugh because I said, ‘Well, where are you?’, and I think he said he was in the attic because it was nice and quiet!
“It was just so funny having this visual image of us both sitting in these bizarre spaces that we would never have thought that we needed to use before – and recording Doctor Who. It’s amazing.”
Sophie first worked with David back in 2001 when a young Scottish actor guest starred in a Big Finish Doctor Who adventure called Colditz. She recalls: “Yes, it is amazing to think of that and I remember I kind of clocked him at the time. David has a presence. When he walks into a room you can’t help but notice him and I did think, ‘Oh, who is this young man?’
“As an actor you are aware of him because he’s very good, obviously, and I just love his voice. I think he’d really wanted to play the Doctor as a Doctor Who fan. And then the very next time I met him was when he had left Doctor Who and he played my sidekick – let’s make that clear, MY sidekick – in Tree Fu Tom, the children’s series!
“David played this wonderful character called Twig, a funny character and a great job he did too. It was just so lovely to see him again. “We had a great time recording Quantum of Axos, and the way we worked together was really, really good. We had such a good ensemble cast as well and it was a lovely way to spend the day.”’

The Ninth Doctor meets River Song!
Christopher Eccleston is joined by Alex Kingston in Star-Crossed, a brand-new box set of full-cast audio dramas from Big Finish Productions, due for release in May 2024.
Tumblr media
For the final release in the current series of The Ninth Doctor Adventures, the Time Lord with a war-torn past meets a very important woman from his future.
Alex Kingston first played Professor River Song in Steven Moffat’s 2008 Doctor Who TV episode Silence in the Library, and since then the assassin-turned-archaeologist has met many incarnations of the Doctor – though not in the right order.
It’s finally time for her to say “Hello, sweetie” to her husband’s ninth incarnation, as the two of them embark on three adventures together. They visit a planet in thrall to a dating app, an intergalactic bank with a catastrophic glitch, and a raging maelstrom. Fantastic!
Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Star-Crossed is now available to pre-order for just £29.99 (collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £22.99 (download only), exclusively here.
The three thrilling stories are:
Swipe Right by John Dorney  Face of the Apocalypse by Lizzie Hopley  Archipelago by Tim Foley
Christopher Eccleston said: "Returning to the world of the Doctor has been a great experience precisely because it has allowed me to re-explore my interpretation of the character and how he interacts with the many extraordinary beings he encounters along the way. Alex’s River was one such character and this was an interesting, challenging and enjoyable encounter for the Doctor too.”
Alex Kingston said: “This is the first time that I’ve had an opportunity to work with Chris's Doctor. It’s a challenge for River to step into his interpretation and navigate it. He’s got a different energy to any of the other Doctors – she has to work harder to engage him, to get through to him, which is great fun.”
Big Finish listeners can purchase Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Star-Crossed as part of a as part of a complete four-volume series bundle for just £108 (on collector’s edition CD box set + download) or £88 (download only).
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
Series 1-2 of The Ninth Doctor Adventures are still available to purchase as triple LP vinyl bundles – limited to a pressing of 1,000 per volume – for £140 per series. Collector's edition (CD box set + download) bundles are also available at £110 per series, as are digital download bundles, for just £96 per series.
Please note: the vinyl editions do not include any behind-the-scenes extras. However, listeners purchasing vinyl LP editions will receive a download of the story automatically and be given access to the CD edits as a bonus download. Episodes will be edited specifically for the vinyl format, presented as 2 episodes, one on each side, each with opening and closing music. In addition, all pre-orders of the vinyls will also receive the behind the extras as a bonus download.
Please note that Big Finish is currently operating a digital-first release schedule. The mail-out of collector’s edition CDs may be delayed due to factors beyond our control, but all purchases of this release unlock a digital copy that can be immediately downloaded or played on the Big Finish app from the release date.

Behind the Scenes at "The Diary of River Song" with Alex Kingston | February 2022
Professor River Song returns in four new adventures. She encounters royalty, killer robots and her own, occupied tomb, before being reunited in the digital afterlife with Proper Dave. [x]
10.1 The Two Rivers by Tim Foley
River Song finds herself on an irresistible mission - investigating the tomb of the legendary River Song! Except the statues don't resemble her and the tomb contains the body of someone very different... or does it?
10.2 Beauty on the Inside by Lizzie Hopley
It would seem to be a perfectly ordinary painting of a forgettable royal family - so why did a biochemist smuggle it out of a closed colony at the cost of her own life? River is determined to find out.
10.3 Black Friday by Lauren Mooney and Stewart Pringle
Omnia Forum might just be the greatest shop in the galaxy and it’s celebrating two hundred years at the heart of the retail sector. But when River attends the celebratory gala she finds it less ‘everything must go’ and more ‘everything has gone’… apart from the Autons.
10.4 Firewall by Barnaby Kay
River is living her dream life with her dream husband. But every paradise has a serpent and this husband might not quite be up to the task.

Just listened to: “Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor and River Song”
Tumblr media
The Doctor knows that River Song is a part of his future. A maddening, intriguing, but inevitable part.
Their lives are becoming inextricably intertwined, but in these early days – for the Doctor at least – they must navigate their relationship without too many spoilers.
Whatever her past, and the Doctor’s future, holds, River will make sure that he has fun untangling the mystery...
All stories starring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor and Alex Kingston as Professor River Song.  All stories directed by Nicholas Briggs.
Tumblr media
The first time the Doctor met River Song, he saw her die. And now she’s asking him on a date. Well, not a date, exactly... More of a mission.
But the Doctor isn’t at anyone’s beck and call. Or so he thinks. With billions of lives hanging in the balance, can the Doctor afford not to do whatever River wants? Whichever one of him she asks?
Special guest stars Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor and Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor.
Also starring Glen McCready as Borslav.  All other roles played by members of the cast.
Tumblr media
When jewels become lethal in the London of 1912, both River and the Doctor turn up to find out why.
A mystery takes them centuries into the past, and onto the high seas, where a superstitious crew edges towards mutiny.
The star-crossed couple are about to find out that, while gemstones inspire jealousy, love can be the deadliest treasure of all...
Starring Barnaby Kay as Gerrard Pulman, Joe Jameson as Captain John Bickell, Joe Sims as Abe Porter and Anjli Mohindra as Omara.  All other roles played by members of the cast.
Tumblr media
River and the Doctor meet on the most haunted planet in the galaxy. The Doctor’s not sure it’s an ideal date - until they discover a mystery.
Something is wrong with the ghosts. Something might even be killing them...
And as the Doctor and River investigate, the truth of what’s happening on the planet of ghosts may prove deadly for them both.
Starring Timothy Bentinck as Alfie, Mina Anwar as Betty, Emma Swan as Dell and Sam Benjamin as Ziggy.  All other roles played by members of the cast.
[Plus an additional disc of behind the scenes material.]

For all the company’s flaws, it’s encouraging to see how the New Series BF audio have been relatively inclusive in picking their writers. I mean, it’s certainly not ideal and it could be improved A LOT, but when you see how dismal the representation can be in BF (like ... you’ve seen the MR?), it’s encouraging.
Ninth Doctor audios: 25% (Una McCormack) Tenth Doctor audios: 20% (Jenny T. Colgan, Helen Goldwyn) River Song: 16% (Jenny T. Colgan, Jac Rayner) War Master: 25% (Jay Harley) Torchwood: 24% (Emma Reeves x2, AK Benedict x3, Juno Dawson x2, Helen Goldwyn, Lizzie Hopley, Jay Harley, Jenny T. Colgan)

The originals 5x12
My god this episode was so amazing. It was everything I love about this show and more. From all the Klope moments, to the Klalijah bromance and even Klaroline scenes 😭😍 I love this show so much. And my god the (spoiler) hayley and hope reuniting scene in the after life was SO amazing and her speech to Hope about how much she loved her and forgiving herself and living her life had me in tears. Let's not even mention Klaus being such a good daddy. We even got the Hope and Elijah scenes we all wanted and ugh I LOVED it all even stupid Alaric being the protective dad and him and Caroline fighting. I mean watching Hope continue to grow and develop her relationship with Landon and the Twins as they find they're own place in the world and the relationship with their parents makes me SO SO excited for legacies!!!

Sontarans vs Rutans
27 November 2023
Tags : Stop PressDoctor Who NewsDoctor Who - Classic Series - Special Releases
Four Doctors will enter the battle between the Sontarans and Rutans in a four-part audio drama, due to be released in 2024 from Big Finish Productions.
Tumblr media
It’s been half a century since a spaceship crashed on medieval Earth and the Sontarans made their first dramatic appearance in Doctor Who, in January 1974’s The Time Warrior.
To commemorate the occasion, Big Finish is celebrating with a brand-new series to mark the 50th anniversary of Robert Holmes's clone creations.
Sontarans vs Rutans will be released in four monthly parts between January and April 2024, forming an epic full-cast audio adventure which weaves through the lives of the Third, Sixth, Eighth and War Doctors.
The complete Doctor Who – Sontarans vs Rutans series bundle is now available to pre-order for just £40 (collector's edition CD + download) or £32 (download only), exclusively here.
The war between the Sontarans and the Rutans has been going on for millennia. And is likely to continue for millennia more.
A terrible conflict with no care for consequences or collateral damage. Billions have died with no end in sight. Its reach can encompass ancient Ireland and a forest world in the far future.
Encounters with UNIT and a Doctor no more. From the outside these battles may seem disconnected. But sometimes there is a common thread. And unpicking that could destroy everything.
Producer David Richardson said: "I realised the 50th anniversary of The Time Warrior was approaching, and that we were long overdue a big, epic foray into the Sontaran/Rutan war. I pitched the concept to executive producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs and got a pretty instant green light to get underway with development."
The four stories in this series are as follows:
The Battle for Giant's Causeway, by Lizzie Hopley (due for release in January 2024)   The Children of the Future, by Tim Foley (due for release in February 2024)  Born To Die, by Tiegan Byrne (due for release in March 2024)  In Name Only, by John Dorney (due for release in April 2024)
The series cast includes Paul McGann (the Eighth Doctor), Tim Treloar (the Third Doctor), Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor) and Jonathon Carley (the War Doctor), with Dan Starkey playing a variety of Sontarans. More cast and story details will be released soon.
Big Finish listeners can purchase each part of Sontarans vs Rutans individually for just £10.99 (collector's edition CD + download) or £8.99 (download only), from the website at www.bigfinish.com.
All the above prices include the special pre-order discount and are subject to change after general release.
