i am so tired of how easily people slip into anti-Blackness to defend their arguments

recently (always tbh but also recently) i've been seeing a lot of disdain circulating for African Americans, disappointedly but not surprisingly from a lot of non-white people as well.

[f appropriating other cultures is so repugnant to you... why do you have a kpop profile pic... but i digress]

specifically this is about the Cleopatra tv show? casting that people are discussing right now, it's really highlighted how Black people, especially African Americans, aren't allowed to do anything a little bit cringe without racist, violent blowback. Cleopatra has been played by many many actresses, most of whom aren't of Greek or Egyptian descent. So it's weird that people are acting like Black people are uniquely horrible and ignorant for the casting of a Black woman as Cleopatra, when many castings have not been historically accurate.

Liz Taylor was British-American, Vivien Leigh was British, Monica Bellucci and Sophia Italian... you get the point. and yet people aren't hurling racist slurs at white people (there are none) for casting Cleopatra as non-Greek/Egyptian all these years. if you're upset about this particular casting, you can at least be civil with your discussions. but, no, it's easiest to call us dirty, ignorant n******s because half the time people are just waiting for an excuse.

let me explain something to you, gently. a lot of people ask, well, African Americans and Caribbeans were sold from West African countries like Ghana and Nigeria, why don't they go appropriate those countries.

the answer's quite simple. we don't learn anything about West Africa in school.

laugh break, haha, dumb USAmericans.

okay, back to business. in the U.S., we learn a very short list of non-European civilizations: Mesopotamia, China, and Egypt. Maybe one line on Mali if you're lucky. the school system here is very sensitive to teaching anything that triggers 'white guilt' aka anything more than a cursory glance at anything concerning Black people and our history, which is deemed as unimportant. you can say we were obviously enslaved from West African countries so we should learn about those cultures, but... we don't speak our old languages, save for some loanwords like 'duppy' instead of 'ghost' in Caribbean vernacular and such, we don't eat our old foods, wear our traditional clothes... we don't even know what they were, what ethnic group(s) we would have belonged to. we're not immigrants in that sense that we have a home country, a definite place of origin. do you know what it's like to feel that so much of your identity is rootless? do you know how endless that emptiness is?

so when these three non-European civilizations were laid out before us, we latched onto the closest one, and ran a little too far with it.

in fact, my generation is less dependent on Egypt as a sort of crutch; this is more of an older people thing. we have healed enough to be able to look within.

this is not a sob story. this is just a story of how we got here, and how this construction of the world -- disregarding the effects of white supremacy and racial trauma while enacting racist behavior and showing incredible fluency with white supremacist imagery and rhetoric -- is fundamentally flawed.

this is just a sample of the racist tweets on the actress's twitter. i have chosen not to include the images that titilate these people but they are equally horrible, depicting violence against Black people.

in fact, i should stop calling this pathological behavior pattern 'white supremacy' at this point because a lot of people are actually getting off is to Arab slavery. the parallels between misogyny and anti-Blackness are so interesting -- misogynists are addicted to the ego boost of subjugating women, racists are addicted to the ego boost of subjugating Blacks. yes, your ancestors spearheaded an appallingly brutal slave trade of African people which lasted thirteen centuries and is continues to this day (yes, Black people are still being enslaved in your countries but you're butthurt over a tv show so it's time to go ballistic -- by the way white people were also kidnapped and sold but since the rise of European imperialism they'd been able to shed that 'shame'), even more evil than the triangular trade and there are fewer survivors because of the reproductive control methods (read, violent sterilization). source1 source2. you people spouting this nonsense because of a tv show are just as racist as the white people over here, possibly worse. do you feel edgy villain enough now? happy?!

and by the way, 'threatening' to cast white actors as Harriet Tubman or Martin Luther King doesn't hurt us the way that Cleopatra not looking white enough seems to emotionally wound you, we are used to being minimized and erased for our contributions to society and are not thin-skinned like the losers complaining about this like it's the worst thing in their lives.

Is Afro-centerism inaccurate? Probably. Is it fearmongering to position it as equivalent to white supremacy? Absolutely.

Why doesn't Hollywood produce West Africa period pieces in order to cast more Black actors instead? Now there's an actually productive question. Thank you. Actually, next they should do a long, high budget docudrama on the Arab slave trade so you can feel really uncomfortable.

Foreign Policy Morning Brief:

A month after Iran’s protest movement first erupted, it appears to be gaining steam in the face of Tehran’s violent crackdown, which human rights groups say has killed at least 233 people—including 32 children. 

To crush dissent, security forces have pulled from a brutal playbook, including firing assault rifles at demonstrators, forcibly shipping dissenting students off to psychiatric institutions, and even sexually assaulting a protester. Authorities have also cut internet access and punished celebrities who back the demonstrations with arrest and travel bans.

That’s done little to quell the outpouring of anger, especially as Tehran’s repressive tactics kill more children and protesters start to demand broader political change. The recent deaths of two 16-year-old teenage girls after they took part in protests has further fueled the public’s fury, the New York Times reported. 

On Saturday, gunshots and loud blasts were heard throughout Tehran as a fire engulfed the infamous Evin prison, known for holding prominent political prisoners and other dissidents. Four detainees died after inhaling smoke while more than 60 others were wounded, according to state media. 

Exactly what happened beforehand still remains unclear, although the Wall Street Journal reported that prisoners had been shouting anti-government messages. Some of the detainees’ families allege that state forces stoked the fire and believe more than four people were killed; Iranian officials insist that the incident is unrelated to the ongoing unrest. 

As reports emerged on Saturday, U.S. officials expressed their concern for the Americans currently confined in the prison. “We are following reports from Evin Prison with urgency,” tweeted U.S. State Department spokesperson Ned Price. “Iran is fully responsible for the safety of our wrongfully detained citizens, who should be released immediately.”

The European Union is expected to levy sanctions today on Tehran over its response to the protests, following in the footsteps of the United States, Britain, and Canada. 

“Violent repression must stop immediately. Protesters must be released,” Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign minister, tweeted. “Internet access and accountability are needed.”

Britain’s economic disarray. Britain’s economic policy has undergone another major shift under new Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, whom Prime Minister Liz Truss appointed to the role after firing Kwasi Kwarteng on Friday.

Facing mounting criticism, Truss made the move as a last-ditch attempt to prop up  her crashing reputation. Hunt, who had signaled he would likely raise some taxes, gave an emergency statement Monday morning that appears to reverse almost all of Kwarteng’s tax cuts. More controversially, he announced a reduction of the government’s energy-support scheme with household guaranteed price caps lasting only six months rather than two years.

Markets reacted immediately and bond yields on gilts fell as the pound rose against the dollar. Even if Hunt manages to reassure markets, business leaders and Conservative MPs are already calling for Truss’s removal and replacement—a move that some Truss allies warn could precipitate an early general election.

Russia’s faltering war effort. Russian authorities are pulling men from homeless shelters, cafes, and even straight from the streets to fight in Ukraine, leaving many racing to hide and escape, the Washington Post reported. Out of the 300,000 people required for partial mobilization, 222,000 have already been conscripted, President Vladimir Putin announced last Friday. 

Tunisia’s IMF deal. Tunisia and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to an initial deal for a $1.9 billion loan as the country struggles under surging inflation and food shortages. Once ratified, it will be the two parties’ third such deal in nearly a decade.

A/N: Hello everyone. This is gonna be my first novel length fanfiction on here. It’s gonna be pretty heavy, but I promise it gets better as the story progresses. If I forgot anything in the warnings, please tell me so I can add it, and if anything bothers you, my inbox is always open! :) The story is mainly about Ashton and Esme, but all the boys have chapters from their own perspective, and so does Luke’s sister, Jane. I love love love 5sos and I’m at a loss for mutuals who also do, so leave me a message if you wanna talk about these guys. Enjooooy and please give me feedback ♥

prologue

“It’s okay. Remember, the sky is crying”

There was a short silence before Ashton could answer through his tears. His breathing was unsteady and his eyes were glassy, but when he finally spoke, his voice was steady.

“Who is it crying about?”

“Us”

 A long time ago, when things were just getting started, Esme was struggling. Her best friend had recently gotten the diagnosis of depression and a severe anxiety disorder after trying to kill himself. The whole thing had caused a trauma that sent him into awful panic attacks every time he heard rain or worse, a thunderstorm. Although he seemed to be getting better, Esme saw his pain, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

The illness was driving them apart. She could feel Ashton floating away from her, slipping through her fingers like sand. And she was scared; not just for their friendship, but for him. Ashton was going to a dark place, and she could neither stop him nor follow him.

But on a stormy day in October, Esme found a way back in, a way back to him. It was early evening, and the clear sky had only just given way to rain, when she got a panicked call from Anne, Ashton’s mother. She couldn’t form a coherent sentence, but the words “Ashton” and “panic attack” were enough for Esme to hang up and rush out into the rain.

The Irwin’s only lived a few houses down, and the moment Esme could see their house, she could see Ashton. He was on the ground, a few feet from the Irwin estate. His hands were on his ears, and although it could have been the rain, she was sure that he was crying.

As she neared the 15-year-old boy, Esme could see how much he was shaking, that he was gasping for breath. Anne and Logan were standing close, calling things out to their son, desperately trying to help him. When Anne’s eyes found Esme, she was begging for her to help.

Esme’s eyes wandered toward the Irwin’s front door, where she could see Harry’s small frame watching the scene. Ashton’s little brother was only 5 years old, but he had noticed that there was something wrong with his brother.

“Anne, Logan”, she called out, “go take Harry inside. He shouldn’t see Ashton like this”

Anne looked at Esme for a very long second, before nodding, seemingly relieved that someone was telling her what to do. Although Anne had always meant well and did her best to look out for her children, she was incredibly overwhelmed, especially since Ashton had gotten so sick. With Logan working fulltime, Anne was alone with the boys a lot, and the couple was often struggling to find the right way to help them.

Ashton’s parents left and Esme took an incredibly deep breath before stepping toward her best friend. She didn’t know what to do at first. If she should touch him, if he could even hear her.

“Ashton”, she finally tried, and after a moment once again, “Ash”

Ashton didn’t react. The rain by now had flattened his curly hair to his forehead, and his shirt was sticking to his upper body. Esme took another step toward him and then decided to sit down.

“Ash, I need you to listen to my voice, okay?” No reaction.

“I know you’re scared. But if you just listen to me instead of the rain, and if you just take deep breaths, I can tell you a story”, for the first time since Esme had arrived, Ashton showed any sign at all that he was aware of her presence. He took his hands from his ears.

Esme’s heart skipped a beat and she scrambled for words, not wanting to fail him. When she started talking, it felt like the rain around them quieted down, and she knew that Ashton was listening, even though he wouldn’t look at her.

“A long time ago, before any humans walked the earth, the sky had a soul and a body, and it occupied the earth. It was gentle and loving, and all other souls that met the sky, however small, were enchanted by it.

For a long time, the sky was happy by itself. But centuries passed and it started feeling lonely. Until it found a companion in the sea, and for a long time they are happy with one another. That is, until both sky and sea decided that the earth should be graced with more life, that more souls should get to enjoy its beauty. And they gave up their places to allow humans to see the world.

And still, even today, they are watching us. They enjoy our happiness and feel our pain, and when it is raining, it means that the sky is crying”

Esme took a deep breath and finally dared to touch Ashton’s hand. And for the first time he looked up. Esme’s heart contracted at the sight of him. His formerly bright, hazel eyes were now glassy, exhausted and he didn’t look as young as 15.

“It’s crying?”, Ashton asked, in a voice so small she could barely hear it. Esme just nodded, smiling softly. “What is it crying about?”

“Well, the sky and the sea, when they gave up their life on earth, they also gave up being together. They did it because they had their own lifetime of happiness, and they knew by letting go, they could give this happiness to others.

And so, when they see that us humans, who they wanted to give their happiness to, are suffering, they start crying. That means right now, the sky is crying about you, Ash”

Ashton’s eyes were still filled with tears when he reached out. He softly touched Esme’s cheek, and suddenly she realized that she had been crying, too.

“Us”, Ashton corrected, “The sky is crying about us, then.”

Esme smiled and nodded. “Us”

Listening to the Far North station on ABC radio is the audio equivalent of doomscrolling.

Cyclone Jasper is making landfall and there are people I love in the dangerzone. Liz/Mali in Hopevale are likely not to be hit by the worst of it and they have plenty of canned food and a generator. Mel in Darwin has prepped the house and taken herself and the dog to a friend's place because the road in and out of her suburb is a high flood risk. My boss is up on the Atherton tablelands having taken the family to visit her parents for a few days but I feel ok about that because cyclones tend to downgrade by the time they get inland (and they have heaps of food and a generator).

praying praying praying. For safety, especially for those sleeping rough. For minimal damage. For restoration.

Grateful I saw the reef late last year when it was looking pretty good. Huge chunks of it have likely been decimated.

May mga panahon na tila'y parang wala ng katapusan ang mga pagaaway 

at

minsan'y nagagwa pa nating mag salita ng masasakit na salita sa taong sinasabihan nating mahal natin at ayaw nating mawala sa buhay natin.

Ngunit bakit ganon? 

Sa tuwing ng aaway kayo, Isa sa inyo, panigurado kung makapag-bitaw ng salita ay napaka- sakit nito na tila ba'y walang ng makakapantay sa talim nung salita.

Hanggang sa tila sunod-sunod na ang mga pag-aaway.

Tuwing makikita ninyo ang isa’t isa, may mga pag kakataon na yung isang kaparehas ninyo ay mayroon ding pinagdadaanan hindi maganda sa trabah, at dahil nga roon, ng sasalubungin na kayo sa init ng ulo , syempre mag kakasagutan na kayo niyan.

Hanggang sa araw araw ganun na lang, kung ano-ano nalang ang nasasabi ninyo sa isa’t isa, para ma-depensahan niyo lang ang sarili.

Mga masasakit na salita na tila ba’y pwede ma-tatak sa isip’t puso ng bawa’t isa.

Hanggang sa darating yung araw na, mananahimik na lang ang isa sainyo, tuwing magagalit ka sakanya, 

o

sakanya mo ibinubuntong ung stress mo sa trabaho

At diyan na ng sisimula yung iba bigla nalang gustong umalis kasi, kada away meron silang naririnig sainyo ng mga salitang, hindi kanais-nais na tiyak na nakak-babaa or nakaka-panliit para sa paningin  nila sa sarili nila.

 At

Eto yung epekto ng mga pag kakataon na,  tuma-tahimik ako para ng sa ganon hindi ako makapag salita ng masakit sa taong mahal ko, para hindi nila maramdaman ung sakit ng nararamdaman ko, pag sila naman yung naksigaw at nakakapag bitaw ng salita.

Tuwing ng hihina ako at hindi ko siya mapag-sumbong ng nararamdaman ko

at tila ba’y ako nalang ang mag isa sa nararamadaman kong pag mamahal sa relasyon naming dalawa.

Minsan gusto ko lang nman mag sumbong sa misis ko, yung papakinggan lang nya akong nassaktan, pero hindi ko mahanap yung presensya ng misis ko, kasi kahit siya may sarili ring problema at minsan nakakapag-dagdag pa daw ako sa problema niya.

Eto na yung mga tanong na tumatakbo sa isip ko :

LAGI NALANG BA AKO, IINTINDI SA NARARAMDAMAN NILA?

HINDI MAN LANG NILA, NA-IISIP YUNG NARARAMDAMAN KO ?

DIto na papasok yung hanggang kailan ko kaya kakayanin?

at 

Hanggang saan kaya, kayang lumawak nung pag uunawa ko sa kanya?? 

o 

hindi naman kaya wala na siyang na uuna-waan sa amin??

Masakit yung ang iwanan. alam ko naman yun, hindi lahat na-uunawaan ng iba, kung bakit nagagawa un.,Lalo na sa taong bigla nalang nawawala pag katapos ng away.

Isa lang naman ang dahilan eh,ang liit na ng tingin nung misis mo sayo, at nakikita mo yun sa mga mata nya, kapag nakasigaw at galit siya, masyado nang maraming pag kakataon na luma-laban ka sa nararamdaman mo at gusto mo sanang wag maramdaman ng damdamin mo ung sakit, bilang pag protekta sa insecurities mo.

Sa umpisa , nadadaan pa sa iyak, at  hina-hanap mo pa si misis, tuwing umiiyak mag isa, pero nung sunod sunod na yung away, nadudurog ka, hindi kana maka-iiyak, nag-mamanhid-manhiran ka nalang bigla ng walang alarma.

Sa unang pag kakataong makaranas ka ng salitang masakit sa taong inaakala mong hindi ka mapag sasalitaan ng ganon’ , lalo na’t na ibahagi mo sakanya ang traumang idinanas mo, syempre bawa’t gabi iiyak at iiyak ka, at tatanongin mo sarili mo,:

ano bang halaga ko sa taong to? bakit ganon nalang ang trato sakin? 

Ganun ba ako kinasusuklam ng taong ito? 

 Hanggang sa kinabukasan,mag so-sorry ka sakanya kasi mas nangingibabaw yong pagmamahal mo sakanya, tapos pag ng away ulit at the heat of arguement eto nanaman, this time mapapatanong ka naman sa sarili mo, 

Anong mali sa gina-gawa ko? 

Ginagawa ko naman yun kakayahang kaya kong maiparamdam  na mahal ko tong taong to, pero bakit ganito ang ngyayari ?

Ganoon siguro ako ka - hate nitong taong mahal ko, hindi kaya?

Imagine niyo yung weight at yung pag ka bitter at haluan mo pa ng na-iinsecure na , kasi ng aacumulate sa isang tao yung conflict. diba? 

Hindi lang me 3rd party or ng ka babae, or fall out of love, ang nagiging reason ng mga taong ng iwan.

Sa dami ng away isa na rin iyon, maraming pag kakataon ang ipinapalagpas ng mga partner niyo sa papamagitan ng hindi pag sasalita at pag alis, upang hindi lumalaaa yung situation, baka mauwi pa sa sakitan, siguro sa iba ngyari na yon nung mga nakaraan, syempre kayo ba gusto niyo bang masaktan kayo physical?  

At madalas ipinalalagpas kayo kasi , mahal na mahal kayo nitong taong ito eh, ngunit, na-iimagine niyo ba kung gaano ka grabe yung sakit na i-neendure ng taong ito? para sa realsyong ito? Sa ka-dahilanang mahal kayo.

 Andun pa yung ,siguro kaya ko pa ito i-laban, na baka sa susunod na away, hindi na ma-uulit pang maramdaman yung ganung pakiramdam, or hindi na magawa yung bagay na i-kinagagalit ng kabiyak ko, para lang hindi na lumaki pa yong away.

May mga laban tayo sa buhay na kailangan mo ng kakampi, upang ma-ipanalo pa ang laban ng buhay, pero papaano? kung pakiramdam mo ikaw na lang mag-isa ang gustong i-laban ito at tila sarili mo narin lang ang kakampi mo, para labanan pa ito?

Lahat gagawin ko para sa taong mahal ko, ultimo ung pag mamahal ko sa sarili ko, susubukan kong i-sugal na i-laan sakanya ito, sa mga panahon na hindi niya kamahal-mahal ang sarili niya andi-dito ako, yayakapin siya ng pag mamahal, ng walang alin-langgan.at sa  yung natitirang pang mamahal na meron ako ay inilalaan ko sa mga panahong hindi ko na siya maintindihan, at sa tuwing ng aaway kami at hindi na siya kamahal-mahal sa paninggin ko.

Hindi ko siya basta susukuan, kasi mahal ko siya, at iisip ka ng paraan para ilaban mo pa, pero pa-paano kung,

Naubos na lahat ng dahilan, para lumaban pa?

sino kakapitan ko?

Sa tuwing nakikita ko mga mata ng misis ko : 

Halata ko’y , Ayaw na nya at nakikita at sinasabi na niya sayo mismo na

HINDI NA SIYA MASAYA SAYO. 

Papaano na? 

Hi-hilain ko pa ba siya, kahit na-dudurog kana?

or

 Pakakawalan mo nalang siya kasi hindi na siya masaya sa piling mo.?

No matter how much you love the person, you have no choice but to save yourself, because they can only see your pain, but they’ll never know the feeling of that pain that you’re going thru, unless they are present with you during your healings.

What left me with no choice is seeing the one I loved the most, not being able to be truly happy with me, so instead of holding onto her, I must set her free, so that, she can truly be happy, and wishes her all the happiness in the world, Whatever she wants’ to achieve, in life I’ll always be her number one supporter., But not as her partner anymore, but as a stranger.  The 2nd reason left me no choice is is to give up and will tries to move on, and don’t let them worry, and that you’ll be fine. I love her so much & she knows that so well & I’m satisfied that I get to make her felt it. She is worthy to be loved. .
