Once upon a time, he would have been over the moon excited for his daughter to bring a boyfriend to meet them. He’d have made them an elaborate, sweetheart themed meal, gotten out the good candles, decorated the table.

Tonight Tom was...okay with the meal he created, but he knew his heart hadn’t been it. He just couldn’t muster the enthusiasm he’d had before. He didn’t really understand why his amazing daughter had such bad luck with boys. They’d always seemed perfectly nice...he’d been particularly hopeful about the artist boy but that hadn’t lasted long at all.

He was tired of seeing Marinette’s heart broken and this new boy...well, Marinette certain had the happy glow of new love, but...a musician? That didn’t sound...stable. A rock musician, at that, a guitarist. Tom had seen enough Behind the Music interviews to be worried. Tom’s concern had been enough to make Sabine take him aside and remind him that Marinette was an adult now, that her choices were hers to make, including who she chose to date and what she chose to do with them (Tom hadn’t needed his brain to go that direction) and that it was okay to be worried but that they were going to smile and support Marinette and be kind to the boy she loved.

He was polite enough, Tom would give him that. Jittery, which he hadn’t expected. Tom took in every detail, black nails and dyed hair and pierced ears and the leather bracelets that he fiddled with constantly. The boy was clearly nervous, but his joking manner and casual way of addressing Marinette rubbed Tom the wrong way. Two courses in and Tom was only more worried than he had been in the beginning.

Luka’s eyes flicked to Tom and down to the table, picking at his food. Tom felt a trickle of irritation. Why didn’t the boy just eat his damn food. It was good food! Food that Tom had made and prepared for him. Well, for Marinette, but still. Ungrateful.

Tom felt Sabine kick him under the table and hastily smoothed the frown away from his face.

He tried, he really did. He tried to join in the conversation, to ask questions, to get to know the kid. But every time he spoke, Luka jumped, and his answers were confused and rushed. Shifty.

Tom didn’t like him.

“We’ll c-clear the table,” Marinette said shortly, and Tom jolted at the dark look she sent him. “Why d-don’t you go ssset up dessert in the living r-room where we can all b-be comfortable?”

“That sounds lovely, dear,” Sabine said, grabbing Tom’s arm and tugging sharply. He grudgingly followed her out to the living room, where she rounded on him. “You are scaring the tar out of that poor boy,” she hissed.

“I’m not doing anything,” Tom insisted.

“Papa.” Tom turned and cringed a bit at the look on Marinette’s face. She stood with her hands on her hips, her lips thin, and Tom knew they were in trouble. “You aren’t even g-giving him a ch-chance,” she growled. “W-why? B-because he d-doesn’t hide who he is? B-because he’s in a “s-s-soft” major? B-because he d-d-doesn’t c-come from mmoney? I d-didn’t think you w-w-would c-care about any of that. Wh-what is it?”

Tom looked at Sabine for help, but Sabine folded her arms and looked at him with a cocked eyebrow and Tom knew he was screwed.

“I’m sure he’s a perfectly nice boy,” he said desperately. “I just—I’m not sure he’s right for you. You deserve someone exceptional. Someone who won’t ask you to put your dreams on hold for his. I just...he doesn’t seem like your type, sweetheart.”

Marinette’s eyebrows lowered and her bottom lip pouted out and Tom took a step backwards, half-expecting some kind of ultimatum. For a moment, she just stood there and he could see she was fighting a block, and his heart plummeted into his stomach. She must really be upset. He wasn’t at all prepared for what she said next, nor the hurt, almost teary voice she said it in.

“He sssspeaks three languages,” she told him. She looked at Sabine. “One of th-them is his mmother’s n-native t-tongue.” She looked at Tom. “He’s on a full ssscholarship for his mmmusic. I’ve p-personally heard his p-professors call him a p-p-prodigy.” Tom’s eyebrows rose. “Yet he still works a day j-job and p-plays gigs on the w-weekends to help put his sssister through school and k-keep their appartment, plus he ssssells some of his original m-music. He’s sssold music to C-Clara Nightingale and t-two tv shows that I know of.” Tom gaped at her. “Yes, he’s f-f-focused on mmusic sssometimes to the exclusion of everything else, but who else d-do we know like that?” She glared at him, and then looked at Sabine.

“Ask him about t-traditional Chinese mmmusic,” she challenged, and then back at Tom. “Or Italian. Or any culture of mmmusic. T-talk to him about history and how it influenced the mmmusic that was mmade at the t-time.” She smiled wryly. “D-don’t ask him about Ssscottish m-music though, he’ll never ssstop. He’s as b-bad as Papa with his p-pastries.” Tom cracked a smile at that.

“He w-wanted to take out his earings and take the polish off his n-nails and I told him nnnnot to b-because he shouldn’t have to ch-change for us. He’s insecure and reserved and he h-hides it b-by t-t-talking big,” she said, her shoulders coming down a little. “H-he hasn’t sssaid so b-but I think his f-family nnever had m-much and he’s sself-conscious ab-bout it. P-people have mmmisunderstood him h-his whole life because he c-can’t relate outside of mmusic ssometimes. But he’s educated and sssmart and sssweet and thoughtful and k-kind, and I l-love him.” She blinked back sudden tears, and Tom felt like he’d swallowed a rock. “Sso p-please show him the P-papa I love, so he can be the L-luka I love in f-front of you.” She turned on her heel and went back into the kitchen.

Sabine sighed. “I warned you. I told you before he even got here that she was serious about him and you’d better keep an open mind.”

“I know, I know, I just...he just looks so…”

“Tom,” Sabine shook her head. “What do people say when they look at you? When they look at us? You’re better than this.” She shot him a glare that made him wither. “You’re better than your father.”

Suddenly a male voice rang out loudly from the kitchen, and both of them jumped. “So sing it back if you’re with me, I wanna hear how your heart speaks, while we’re young, while we’re young—”

Tom and Sabine looked at each other and then moved toward the kitchen, peeking in. Luka had Marinette in a waltz hold, swaying her around the kitchen, looking at her with absolute adoration. She giggled as he grabbed her around the waist, lifting her feet off the ground as he continued to sway with her. “And I’ve been so lost without you,” he sang, putting his forehead against hers. “And are you lost without me too, while we’re young, while we’re young—”

Sabine giggled, and Luka’s head snapped around to them, a blush spreading over his face as he set Marinette back on the floor. “Oh, um, we were just—she just looked a bit sad, and—I’m sorry, I was probably loud—”

Tom smiled slowly. “Finish up, kids,” he said, tone softer than it had been all evening as he slipped his arm around Sabine. “I have cookies in the living room for dessert.”

her mother , marcia almeda , was a recent graduate from secondary school who packed a backpack and went traveling !! before long tho she ended up knocked up by another backpacker , this one american , while they were having a fling in sydney ( hence sofie’s middle name lmao @ her mom’s humor ) . she flew back home when she found out & never told sofie’s father oops !! so marcia had sofie at home in recife just before her nineteenth birthday , and marcia was enthralled w little sofie . ofc she inherited her mother’s beauty ( i hc marcia looks like alessandra ambrosio bc hello ! ) & little sofie lived a happy early childhood life in her grandparents’ home in recife.

brazil isn’t the safest of countries & marcia didn’t want the same dangers she experienced growing up for her young daughter , so around sofie’s eighth birthday , her & her mother packed up and went on a ‘ trip ’ to new york city . joke’s on sofie , though - it wasn’t actually a trip , but rly they were trying to move there to find sofie’s father to confirm his paternity and get sofie american citizenship . it was proving more difficult than she thought , & marcia was quickly running out of money . with a face like hers , though , making money wasn’t too difficult , but it was time consuming . marcia found herself escorting older men in order to pay the bills , all the while leaving little sofie to fend for herself . some of her earliest memories are of strange men in their tiny apartment & sofie trying to block out their conversations with her lil cassette player hiding in the corner of her room . eventually , marcia was able to contact the father & they set up a meeting . sofie had gotten her hopes up that she would finally have a dad ( she got dressed up in her sunday best & everything bc reuniting her dad was a BIG deal ) , but the meeting ended up being a quick exchange of words , a mouth swab and a couple signatures . sofie never even learned his name , & this queued up a lifetime of daddy issues & distrust of men !!

while marcia was able to stay in america much longer than she was legally supposed to , eventually she was facing deportation , which meant lil sofie , with her citizenship finally confirmed , was put into the hands of her father who sent off to an american boarding school in new york without even contacting her . she would spend the summers in brazil with her mother or , as she got older , couch - surfing with different friends throughout the months . she started growing apart from her mother as she aged since she wasn’t going home every summer since she didn’t rly feel any connection to brazil . her grandfather had passed away & she only has faint memories grandmother , plus the city wasn’t at all familiar to her & she wasn’t practicing her portuguese after her mother returned to brazil .

through it all , music was proving to be the one constant in her life she could use to escape from reality . she had never done any training or classes , but she just liked singing along to whatever was on the radio & practicing on her own . she also found a passion for writing poetry which she later would realize was compatible with music . she would spend HOURS in the school library working on garage band lmfao bc she couldn’t afford her own laptop to produce music & her dad sent just enough money as he was legally supposed to . but she worked her lil tushy off & applied to a music academy in nyc & was rejected the first year ( DEVASTATING when mixed with her impostor syndrome & daddy issues ) but she practiced more & more & edned up getting accepted the next year . here , she worked on her vocal skills & music production , & started accumulating her own music & selling songs to music producers on the side for some ca$h money .

by the time she was 16 the state decided she was old / mature enough to live on her own so she got a TINY lil studio apartment in harlem where she’d grown up with her mum & she had friends who she’d grown up with . while it wasn’t the safest neighbourhood statistically sofie felt safe & just like one of the neighbourhood kids . it was the first time she genuinely felt like she belonged .

she was accepted on full scholarship to nyu & majored in music composition & vocal performance where she started finally feeling secure in herself & released her own music on soundcloud , quickly amassing a following & becoming an ‘ up & coming ‘ artist !! she was contacted by a scooter braun type guy who was interested in taking her on under his management so she dropped out of uni in her 2nd year ( bc tbh her grades in anything other than her music classes were v subpar ) . soon enough producers wanted to work with her & she was making enough that she didn’t have to sell her songs which she hated doing but had to pay the bills u know . oh & her vc is billie eilish bc ofc shes my queen go stream when we all fall asleep where do we go on spotify u won’t be disappointed

sofie blames it on her brazilian heritage but this bitch loves a party !! like shes the one who gets happy drunk at the pre then is the first on the dance floor then later falls out of the club & into some rando’s bed !! in the back of her mind she knows her drug & alcohol use is self - destructive but she figures shes allowed to let loose sometimes ( even if that ends up being most nights ) ; rly she’s just in denial bc she doesn’t want to change her ways & lose her identity !!

「The 10th Year Anniversary That Was Reached By Their Own Strength」- Each member speaks about their recommended tune~ a plan is in midst!?

－－ SCANDAL, in the way you are, have released your 10th year anniversary BEST ALBUM『SCANDAL』. It's a piece of work that is as voted by fans, but when you all looked at the results, what sort of impression or thoughts did you hold?

HARUNA: It was as we thought (laughs).

MAMI: We were like,「Yeah right?!」Since we've gone the whole way putting our lives at the center of our activities, it was obvious when songs that are popular at lives ranked well. We were purely just happy at that.

TOMOMI: As they were practically all songs that are popular at our lives, we kept performing them. For the ones we did live arrangements for, we still perform them at lives today. So when we heard the original audio for the first time in a long while this round, we were like,「The intro used this bar?」or「Eh, it was such a song?」 It felt a little bit weird (laughs).

－－ I'll bet that each of the songs were well thought out, but one by one, can each of you tell us which is your personal, most favourite song?

MAMI:「Departure」. I wrote the lyrics and composed it, but as we went about on our year 2015 world tour, it was then I got to know that this song is actually super popular among the overseas fans. The content about the song revolved around Japan's 4 seasons, and depicted the change in people's hearts and their environments as these 4 seasons shifted, alongside the use of a Japanese-style melody. For that, the overseas crowd felt it was「extremely catchy」.

RINA: Because they could feel it illustrated Japan, it was fun.

MAMI: I think, we probably don't feel something like this regularly. But everyone researched on all the words in this song and its situational elements, and got to understand the lyrics by actually looking at the sceneries. The intro used an orgel, and the moment the sound came out, the audience went, 'Woah!'...I was like,「Is it this popular?」, but was really happy about it. Not only is it a song that brought me confidence as a songwriter, but to create a song in Japan and to bring it overseas...it got me thinking exactly how important this job was.

－－ How about TOMOMI?

TOMOMI: The one that I had the most thought about is「SCANDAL BABY」. It was the song that was voted in first place, but it wasn't a single; instead, a number from our 1st album as the 1st song. So in order to know this song, you'll have to have bought our 1st album, or have come to our lives. Still, it came in first. That led me to think about how it's proof of SCANDAL placing lives at the heart of our activities. Previously in the past, we'll make songs about what we mean then superficially, but we've gone past that now. In any case, the scenery that we've seen on stage is amazing. We can make sing-alongs happen, and if SCANDAL was a country, this would be our national anthem. It's really a song that was raised by the audience, and they made it No.1 and a special song...in such a sense, it's the song that has the most thought of all placed in it.

－－ What about RINA?

RINA: It's an album song called「Bitter Chocolate」, and since we were able to let many people hear it before, I'm extremely happy that it was selected this time around. All of us have ever lived under the same roof before, and we shared our time together there. When we then go on tours and the 4 of us stay in hotels, it's like we're always returning home and the 4 of us are living together. During one time, I sat in my room and tried making the melody on keyboard, thinking,「This somehow seems possible!」Since at the time, the lyrics were made with TOMOMI at the center of it, I brought the demo to TOMOMI's room to have her listen to it, and asked,「Won't you try coming up with the lyrics?」It was a song that was completed with both our styles of creation. Since that way of creating had been fun, we still make songs today in the different lyric-writing and mmusic composition pattern. I can still remember the joy of being able to ride upon lyrics that I didn't imagine would be. Right after that time, all of us lived alone, but when I return to the house that I live in by myself and am trying to put together a demo, I think of how we spoke till late that night...and I'll remember that as I listen to this song.

－－ How about HARUNA?

HARUNA:「Awanai Tsumori no, Genki Dene」. This was released right after our first one-man live at the Osaka-jo Hall, which has always been our dream venue. Not only is it a song that signified a new start, but it also holds lyrics that can only be written at our generation then. It contained a lot of our feelings at the time, and is purely a love song, but as it was sung from a more adult-like point of view, it was the song that got me feeling for the first time,「I want to continue singing forever from now on」. It is a song that gave me the confidenec to (continue) sing such songs.

－－ Again, this album contains the new songs,「FREEDOM FIGHTERS」and「HELLO」. Can you tell us what sort of thought or imagination brought about these songs?

RINA: Firstly,「HELLO」was a song that had its demo done about a year ago. Since the release period would be Winter, it was recorded with the idea of wanting others to listen to it as a Winter love song. We thought of presenting it as a royal road pop song, so not only were the lyrics straightforward, but since it also has the story element in its content, it was written in a manner that was meant to be easy to reach out to all kinds of people. We only played it once during Christmas, but I was happy that we're finally able to release it. And then, for「FREEDOM FIGHTERS」, since we were going to go on our 47-prefecture tour, we thought about「wanting to create a killer tune that'll look great when shot live」. We imagined and made the melody with that in mind, but we wanted to write lyrics that anyone could understand with the theme, 'Freedom'. Despite clearing that, it took quite some time (to create it). So, it was a song that was really painful to produce, but we do think we're「glad to have held on」. With this song in the best album, it was like,「We completed the 10th year anniversary using our own strength」. It's a song that we think,「We've given it our all」.

－－ Once more, you all feel you're starting again from here on?

RINA: That's right. Rather than say we're finally going towards a new stage, we feel as though our hearts are rest once again.

－－ What sort of future is SCANDAL aiming towards from here on out?

HARUNA: We're soon starting our 47-prefecture tour, but I think we hope to stay as band that will always place importance on our lives after all. We've come this far by making one-man lives the central of the activities, but we really do want to involve more, and all kinds of people in our lives. Since we've moved along, opening our own paths till now, we also hope to play alongside all kinds of people and absorb even more things in future.

MAMI: When the 47-prefecture tour ends, the Summer fes season will also have passed eh. Since we'll got all kinds of stuff planned, it'll be great if people would like to「do something together」, with us. As so, please look forward to it!

RINA: Until now, we haven't got to do a two-man with TRICERATOPS or Kishidan or The Cro-magnons.

－－ Those are 3 amazing bands eh (laughs).

RINA: All 3 groups are huge seniors of ours, and we've received a lot of stimulation from them. That's why, even more so, we'll like to do a two-man and put our confidence into it. Even if we get hurt once in a while, it's also necessary, since we can get more heated up from that. We want to do more gradually.
