This amazing fictional creature turned out to be a young woman named Phoebe who is nice as pie to poor, shy Alice, and whose confident bearing and polished appearance are part of a performance based on her work on the stage as an actress which she has taken on as a career in order to escape from her mother’s persistent and annoying plans to make her a rich marriage.

I was struck by the explanation of “little” which is not attached to the word black as we have do with the “little black dress,” but to any fashionable, very expensive dress. Why “little” then? It isn’t clear, but a tall slender silhouette, although one with a definite bust, waist, and hips was popular in 1938 when when Pomfret Towers was published. Also, simplicity, despite what to our eyes are complex garment details, was highly valued in garment design. So, these may be the reasons that “little” became the fashionable word for a fashionable dress

Pomfret Towers is by Angela Thirkell, one of her novels set in the fictional county of Barsetshire, a county name she had borrowed from Trollope. This one is about a weekend spent at the home of the richest and rudest man in the county (the wealth enabling the manners) and the question who will the man’s heir marry? Plus, some serious teasing about certain kinds of novelists and their desire for admiration. Fashion matters. Fashion plays a major part in everything we do and brings special meaning to the most important moments of our lives. Think about every one of the life rituals we celebrate like our wedding day or our graduation. Think about the big fuss our prom dresses were. What do you wear to an award ceremony and even a funeral? These big life events are marked by the clothes we wear. We make a big deal about them because we want to make these moments just right. We want to look our best and make these memories count. There will be pictures too. But what happens with the rest of our lives? The rest of our lives are filled with important moments too. We’ve got job interviews, birthday celebrations, dinners out with friends, dates, new babies! There are so many other things that we need to get dressed for, that matter and that we want to remember. Fashion makes all of these more memorable for us. (Trigger warning) When 911 happened, I remember being shocked at seeing the families on the news that were searching for their loved ones, describe exactly what they were wearing when they left the house that morning. They described their outfits down to the color of the shirt, and pattern of the tie, the kind of sweater, the jewelry, how many rings, what kind of earrings, everything. I cried for weeks listening to people describing their family members in such detail. It was gut wrenching. But it was important. Even in that moment fashion was important. I want to end this post by saying that every single day is a special occasion. Everyday is an opportunity to create moments to remember. Use fashion to create those moments. You don’t need to wait for a momentous occasion to wear what you want to wear. You can wear something special any day. In fact I dare you to try it. Wear something that makes you feel fabulous.
