Read in 2023:
It begins with a tremor, a realization that love happens in the fragile context of our mortality. That love and life occur just beyond the reach of our control. There is only one letter of difference between love and lose, and somewhere along the way, for me they became synonymous.

ARC Review: The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah
Rating: 3★ of 5
Release date: May 17, 2022
This was an Arab-inspired adventure with endearing characters that each have their own trademark.
The world was full of magic and myth, it was hard not to be engrossed. This was also far from boring, with non-stop action and funny group and character dynamics.
The main plot was a bit shaky, it was in the background awhile. The bigger focus being on the things that just happen to the characters along the way; it was like a story where the characters had this end goal but there were mini quests as they trekked on so the focus had to shift there. Some were maybe a bit too convenient which made me not fear for the characters eventually, knowing they would be okay. Villain characterization for me wasn’t done poorly, but would have been more believable had they not been there to just be bad. I’d say the writing was alright; I think the author has potential to write better.
I wasn’t expecting the many twists, though it was looming at the back of my mind, I didn’t make any guesses. With that ending, I reckon things would take a different direction in the next book.
Overall, I thought the pace was even all throughout and despite the drawbacks, this still remains to be a very fun, easy, and fast-paced read.
An arc was provided in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for the arc!

ARC Review: The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
Rating: 3★ of 5
Release date: July 19, 2022
From the very beginning I could tell there was something more than what was being shown. It had a mysterious air, and characters that were very suspicious as well.
I loved the setting, atmosphere and the lush descriptions all throughout, but the in the first half of the novel there were repetitions in the narrative of the two perspectives and this felt quite pointless to me. It did thankfully diminish as I went on. I appreciated the foreshadowing here, too. Blink and you’ll miss it.
The big twist in the book was something I predicted but the reason for the twist was - for me - insane. Though I think it wasn’t something completely new. I found it harder to put the book down as the tension rose. This was a novel that moved quickly, I made it far into the book faster than I expected. It wrapped up quite well but I don’t know, I was expecting something more, or different. I guess my rating was brought down by its predictability more than anything. My rating is between a 3 and 4, I need to sit on this more. Nevertheless, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau has Silvia Moreno-Garcia's signature prose and world building.

But would it have mattered if she’d been someone else? If she’d been a social butterfly, they would have said she liked to drink away her pain. If she’d been a straight-A student, they would have said she’d been eaten alive by her perfectionism. There were always excuses for why girls died.
