Lord Firth is a Sun God deity from a Watership Down book and TV series. Creator of the World, stars and animals. Blessed El-ahrairah and rabbits with swiftness & cleverness. He is depicted as a sun mandala, with Native patterns twirling inside him like living energy. Arrowhead like sunrays flowing from Him, to shine upon all. Frith is Old English for peace and freedom. The linocut is graphic technique that consists of creating a relief form, by cutting it out with special knives, inking it, and hand pressing - imprinting the reflected image on high-quality papers and canvases. learned how to make linocut stamps this weekend, so ofc i had to make geto and gojo:

i'm happy with how they turned out and am looking forward to refining my technique! linocutting is honestly so relaxing in and of itself, but it's also cool to see the end product!

gojo's hair was probably the hardest part. but i think a finer linocutter tip (idk what they're called) would help! it's interesting to see what i need to make stand out in the stamp so that you can tell who/what it is.

Norfolk-based artist Vanessa Lubach likens her printmaking practice to that of oil painting and draws on the latter to inform her vibrant compositions. “I linocut like a painter and paint like a linocutter, and the two disciplines work together to inform and enhance each other,” she tells Colossal. Whether depicting bunches of dahlias and cosmos in a ceramic pitcher or an enchanting forest landscape, Lubach’s works center on quiet moments in domestic interiors or out among nature.

Each piece begins with a sketch and a general idea of the palette. “I’m always optimistic that I can limit the colour layers to around a dozen at this point, but that almost never happens. They almost always end up in the 20s,” she says. After drawing and carving the main image, or key block, she prints and transfers the composition to additional blocks designed for each individual color. Some pieces, like the ceremonial “Allotment Bouquet,” take almost a year to complete.

Two of Lubach’s works are included in the traveling 84th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers, which is on view through July 9 at Sea Pictures Gallery in Suffolk. She also has a variety of prints available on Etsy and shares much more of her process and glimpses into her studio on Instagram. (via Women’s Art)

just remembered i never posted these on tumblr because i am a Fool...i taught myself linocut this past semester and did a series of small prints based on song lyrics, some of which i animated! the coloring for these little ones is done digitally with textures i printed by hand. unfortunately they are all different dimensions which makes them very difficult to post together on here so please click to expand :-)

Edward Bawden Edward Bawden was a successful and prolific English printmaker, graphic designer, illustrator and painter, known for his prints, book covers, posters, and garden metalwork furniture. Bawden was born in England on March 10, 1903, at Braintree Essex, the only child of Edward and Eleanor Bawden. His parents were Methodist Christians and his father an ironmonger. He was a solitary child and spent much of his time drawing. Whilst at school he began copying drawings of cats by Louis Wain, illustrations in children’s magazines and Burne Jones illustrations. On leaving school in 1918, he attended the ‘Cambridge School of Art’ (1918-1922) where he became interested in calligraphy and in the work of Aubrey Beardsley, Richard Doyle, and William Morris. He received a scholarship to the ‘Royal College of Art' (1922-1926) to complete a diploma in illustration. At the college, he belonged to the circle of friends which included Eric Ravilious, Douglas Bliss and Enid Marx, a group tutored by Paul Nash and famously described by him as representing "an outbreak of talent". While still a student Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious were commissioned by Sir Joseph Duveen to paint a mural at ‘Morley College' London. After graduating, Edward Bawden taught at ‘Goldsmith's College’ and the ‘Royal College of Art’.
