THIS GOT KIND OF LONG, so I'm putting it under a cut. I have feels about angels, eschatology, and worldbuilding! This is not really meta, more like hitting a golf ball on the moon and this post is the golf ball and it may never come down again. 

I don't even know where to start with angel speculation because SERIOUSLY, are the new angels maybe what Cas wanted his revolution to be in S6? Are they the free will angels FOR REAL? Or are they NEPHILIM, thrones, seraphim, or idk, like, if a normal human eats another angel's grace, can they turn into angels? Are they some sort of like a troop of Jason Bournes all hulked up like superspies, heaven's SECRET POLICE?

I hope they namedrop the dead. Like, "How could you do that to Rachel?" I want angel backstory aaaaugh I want it so bad. Like, the thing Edlund said in SDCC where he wants grumpy Cas to meet a dinosaur and the dinosaur's head explodes. Angels in ancient times, angels in Victorian times, angels during the sixties because my headcanon is that Gabe went around with Ken Kesey on his bus.

I do wonder about the garrison because okay, so the leviathans ate the home troops but there has to be other troops on all sorts of angel missions out there, no? ENTER NAOMI??

I mean, all in all, the show has devastated Abrahamic eschatology and not just in the "yay our favorite characters whooped the bad guys way", but in the "they destroyed the infrastructure of Abrahamic religions" kind of way. I mean, I know that SPN is not sticking to the ~details and is just cherrypicking lore for feels, but like. Okay, just for an example, as a Muslim, one of the articles of faith is that I'm supposed to believe in Kiamat (the transliteration varies), which is the Day of Judgment, in which Raphael plays a crucial role because he has to blow the doomsday trumpet. But if you were a Muslim in the SPN universe, well, I guess you can still believe that, but Raphael's dead. WHO'S GONNA BLOW THE TRUMPET NOW?? 

Islam and its siblings aren't the only cosmologies on the table, and it's not just 5x19 showing us that, but also that scarecrow god in S1 and those ones in the AVSC in S3, to name a few. I can imagine the other pantheons looking at all the chaos being wrought in the Abrahamic theater and just rolling their eyes before getting on with their day. In stories where lots of gods show up, I tend to subscribe to the Gaiman-Pratchett school of treating all the myths as true. There is a world turtle, and there is a Garden of Eden, and one day a wolf will eat the moon, possibly when Raphael blows his trumpet. So, if gods can be toppled by burning their tree and stabbing them with special stakes, then surely a god can be toppled by killing its angels. A god is a god is a god who can fall.

And WHILE WE ARE ON THE SUBJECT, of cosmology and worldbuilding, the storyline in S6 about souls makes me wonder about the purpose of heaven anyway. The party line says it's the eternal reward for humans when they die, but considering how souls are apparently like fuel reserves, is Dead Human Heaven secretly just like some energy storehouse or fuel silo? The angels taking their duties very seriously, are they middlemen, pawns, and operatives who don't know the big picture about what the humans are for, only that they are to be protected? ARE SOULS SOYLENT GREEN??

If they really are going to close hell down, what's going to happen to heaven? Does it get shut down too? Where do souls go? Is reincarnation going to get a rise in popularity in SPN's Abrahamic theater? Or are they going a His Dark Materials route with the "we all return to stardust" thing? 

S8 spoilers say that other pantheons are going to be making an appearance and I'm quite curious to see how this will affect the worldbuilding. The past few seasons have presented the angels' apocalypse as, like, the ultimate apocalypse that for actualfax will end everything, but I feel like 5x19 is a snag in this plan whether the show means for it to be or not. And like okay, sure, if I were a human in the SPN universe, it'd be great if hell was closed down so that I never ended up there. Woohoo hooray, et cetera. But for as many deities and religions as there are, there are as many cosmologies and mythologies waiting to be played out. It would kind of sit weirdly with me if the Abrahamics continue to hold the authoritative eschatology if they are not the only religion around. I just have this vision of Sam and Dean racing to close the hellgates and then a representative from another religion pops up all like, "HEY, WE'RE USING THAT." Or like, if Sam and Dean shut down Abrahamic hell, and then they discover there are these other hells. Or, like, Ammit goes after them or something.
