#like we can’t be upset guys have you READ the duology
Text
I have my grievances with season 2, sure, but one thing they did do is conclude it in a way that I personally would have loved the Grisha Trilogy to have ended the first time around.
Like obviously, I would’ve loved more Darklina. BUT, we’ve been living off of crumbs for years now, and they made Mal less of an asshole in the show, so I knew we weren’t going to get much post war room anyways. I’m sad the tethered scenes got cut short (RIP this isn’t real—let me) and he didn’t die in her arms, BUT he didn’t say she was nothing so I’ll take that as a win.
That said, I’ve always thought that an intriguing aspect of Alina’s character development is her affinity for power.
In the book, it scares her how much she wants it because it positions her in league with the Darkling.
"You were meant to be my balance, Alina.  You are the only person in the world who might rule with me, who might keep my power in check."
"And who will balance me?"
She fears it, and quashes her hunger for it time and time again, for Mal, for her own sanity. And yet, she doesn’t get a choice when she loses it. That loss permeates through everything, even her quiet life in Keramzin.
“Sometimes he would find her standing by a window, fingers playing in the beams of sunlight that streamed through the glass…”
This quiet life she defaults to makes sense for her character because her agency in the books wavers frequently and she’s very affected by Mal’s disdain for her abilities (for like the first TWO BOOKS–). But is frankly, boring as hell for a former saint. And, like the Darkling in a way, I did think she could deign to accomplish more.
In the scenario she’s placed in at the end of season 2, not only has she distanced herself from Mal willingly, but she gets the chance to be Grisha without the Darkling looming over her. She uses Merzost to revive Mal, has full control over her powers with all three amplifiers at her disposal, and used the cut, completely destroying a Grisha under the influence of Jurda Parem. On top of all this, she has fully accepted her role as Sankta Alina and is on her way to be Queen of Ravka.
Think about the implications of this. A big theme in the books is that *ouat voice* all magic comes with a price, dearie. If Alina gets to keep her powers, it’s implied that she also gets to keep her prolonged life. She is at an all time high, her impulse controls are dead and out at sea, and her inflated pride has the potential to lead her to THE MOST satisfying fall.
When she uses the cut (in the same way the Darkling does) the upshot and shadow in her eyes as her mouth upturns slowly–UGH I’m honestly living for it. And like, we know she needs something to do while the crows are out there ice court heisting right? RIGHT? I’m not saying this is where I saw this show going, but since we’re here in this HD fanfiction world why NOT have Dark!Alina? How would show!Alina, crack under the Apparat’s influence? Who’s going to be her balance when the Darkling and Mal are gone and Nikolai is literally dealing with his own demon?*cough* and falling for Zoya *cough* What would it take to get this girl’s hair white? And what do I have to do to get a Yurified Darkling in the same room as her?
On that thought, (pardon my unabashed love for drama, I am a Darklina girlie in this Malina world above it all) if we even get to some version of the KOS Duology, does this mean she’ll still be Grisha when the Darkling comes back as the Black Heretic? Will she be queen? A mad saint shunned in the same way he was? A self-fulfilling prophecy? How absolutely delicious would that reunion be? For her to stab the monster and then become him? She wouldn’t be able to look him in the eyes and take the high ground like she did in the sanatorium scene. Everything he tried to warn her about would come to fruition. They could face each other as equals who made some decisions and just like retire together for eternity. (My delusional Darklina shipping ass is brought to you by Start a War btw… I read it immediately after Ruin and Rising on ff.net the first time around, I highly suggest it if you too are suffering)
To get back to the point, were it not for the Duology and the Zoyalai of it all, I’d honestly be for the Sol Koroleva route all the way. I mean, look at her!!!
Tumblr media
Don’t you just want to see her gain the world, and then lose it all in the time it takes the crows to break Matthias of Hellgate? You can’t tell me a season 3 with an OP Sankta Alina dealing with post-civil war Ravka wouldn’t be entertaining at the very least.
Like, of course at the end of the day I want Zoyalai endgame with blue ribbons and rings the size of an acorn, peep the url, besties. But GUYS come ON we know how these things go. Mal’s gonna come back, reign her in and they’ll eventually end up in that boring orphanage with a cat or whatever anyways. In the meantime, we could have so much fun!
If you approach the show as you would fanfic, it’s not as maddening. Trust me, I’m a Darklina shipper and a Zoyalai shipper– you can’t even get to one of those without stabbing and burning the other. I know the showrunners would sooner give us some random love triangle with Tolya and Inej (a topic for another day) than all this but a girl can DREAM.
In conclusion, I did not prematurely lose David for nothing, I need to know where they’re going with this, so please be more chill so we get that unhinged season 3, thank you.

Shadow and Bone
by Leigh Bardugo
book: 7/10
show: 9/10
Alright so i’m assuming most of y’all have heard of this book after the Netflix series came out like a week ago and are like “damn i shoulda read the book” or maybe not. but if not then idk why ur even on my blog but whatever. i read this book like a month or two ago before i even knew about the show so it was a strange coincidence for me but i was excited for the show bc the book was pretty decent. so i sat down to watch the show w pretty low expectations bc the movies are never better than the books (duh) but i ended up liking the show WAY more than the book and here’s why.
So basically, the plot of the book is this chick named alina who draws maps i guess has this friend named mal (who she grew up at an orphanage with) and she has been high key in love w him basically her whole life and he is so fucking clueless so he doesn’t pick up on it at all. but they get sent on a boat across this big black cloud thing called the “shadow fold” w spooky monsters in it. so you’re probably thinking “oh okay since they took a boat, the shadow fold must be over water” wrong. it’s over some crusty ass sand and instead of getting something with wheels they drag this big ass boat across dry land which makes 0 sense to me but okay. also i should probably mention that there are people w like magic powers or some shit but i’ll get to that later. anyways, so alina and her bestie end up on this boat goin across the big spooky cloud with some other rando people. another design flaw of the boat that really bothers me is the fact that there are EVIL FLYING MOSTERS up in this dark ass cloud and instead of like putting everyone below deck or whatever, they jus have everyone vibing out in the open for the monsters to snatch. so of course, the monsters start snatching bitches. and mal gets snatched and alina is like omg no and then she passes the fuck out. very wild stuff. so they make it out of the shadow fold somehow and alina wakes up and these guard dudes are draggin her to the fancy magic people tent. i think now is a good time to explain the magic people so ima do that. so basically there are all these people with magic powers called “grisha” which is kinda confusing bc it sounds a lot like geisha but whatever. there’s like a bunch of different powers and they all have wacky names that i can never remember so i just call them the wind people, the water people, the fire people, the heart people, the healing people, and the builder people. the names are pretty self explanatory. but then there’s this one guy called “the darkling” which is the dumbest name to ever exist omfg i laughed over it for a WHILE. so y’all can probably guess what his power is based off of his stupid name. he makes the shadows move oooo spooky. and he can also use the shadows to chop people in half. i guess. so back to the story, they drag alina to the darklings tent and he’s like “bitch u got powers” and she’s like “nah fam” and he’s like “yeah watch” and he cuts her w a knife and she lights up. like she turns into a human lightbulb. and she’s like “damn okay so like that’s what happened on the boat when i passed the fuck out” so they take her to the palace bc i guess she’s the first person to ever have that power and it’s important bc it can get rid of the shadow fold or whateva. and basically the rest of the book is her trying to figure out her powers and the darkling trying to find this deer whose antlers will amplify her power and alina complaining about living in a castle blah blah blah.
so here’s why the show is better than the book:
her friend/guy she’s in love with is so fucking toxic in the book. he’s such a bitch to her and she’s just like lol okay ily and i’m like wtf? why do u like this piece of shit? he’s just rude man. and in the show i actually liked him. he tried his hardest to get to the palace and find her after they took her away unlike in the book when he didn’t do shit and when she finally saw him again he was mad at her for some reason idk i was like bro u gotta chill. so i’m glad he was chill in the show.
the darkling’s name in the show is “general kirigan” which is also pretty lame but SO much better than the darkling. no debate.
leigh bardugo has 7 books total taking place in this little universe (the shadow and bone trilogy, six of crows duology, and the king of scars duology) and they threw some of the characters from six of crows into the show for some reason. i was a little skeptical of how that was gonna go before the show came out bc shadow and bone and six of crows take place at different times and also i haven’t read six of crows yet but omg. i loved them. it’s this little squad of this ninja bitch, some guy w a cane who is hot af and (my favorite) this gay dude who mostly just talks about a goat. they were baddies and i was so happy they made a lil plot for them and put them in the show.
and those are really the only reasons. idk. i’d recommend both the book and the show but definitely the show a lil bit more.
now it’s time to talk some shit about everyone. (SPOILERS!!)
jesper: okay something important i need to say that my mom mentioned as we were watching the show: wouldn’t it have stank like shit when jesper fucked that one guy in the stables??? like dude no. literally do it ANYWHERE but there pls and thank u.
kaz: jesus fuck make a move you goddamn pussy holy shit
inej: okay first of all the actress who played her was GORGEOUS and she’s such a badass. kaz and jesper can’t do SHIT compared to her.
alina: she lowkey annoyed me a lil bit in the show. she ended up being the one who was a dick to mal instead of the other way around and it kinda made me sad but whatever. also the antlers in her skin omfg i gagged every time i saw it it was fucking disgusting.
mal: dear book mal, go fuck yourself. dear netflix mal, ily boo <3
the darkling/general kirigan: they chose an old ass dude to play him in the show. like in the book even though he’s like hundreds of years old, he’s only supposed to look like 20 and the homeboy who played him in the show is 39. mmm no. poor little 25 year old jessie who had to make out with this grandpa motherfucker.
genya: wtf was that tall ass collar she was wearing?? made the bitch look like she had no neck.
david: 🧍‍♂️. also you traitor motherfucker.
baghra: we needed more of her. i love that crusty bitch. kinda upset that she attacked mal in the show but whatever he was fine i guess? idk i liked her a lot more in the book lol.
nina: idk who tf this bitch was bc she aint in the book. her lil plot was boring tbh.
milo: queen milo i live for you.
and that’s it. thank u for reading.

book review: Jean Plaidy, Madonna of the Seven Hills (1958)
Genre: historical
Is it the main pairing: not even?!
Is it canon: no
Is it explicit: no
Is it endgame: no
Is it shippable: seems kinda one-sided on Cesare’s part tbh
Bottom line: miss me with that “lUcREziA boRGiA was an iNnOcEnT bYsTAnDEr to her family’s crimes” claptrap
There is a softness in this Lucrezia. Where is the iron—the Slytherin mineness and vindictive retaliation against those who would harm her and hers? Alright lemme answer my own question: What’s happening here is Jean Plaidy wants Lucrezia to have a moral compass that is not anchored to her family’s interests, and I am having none of it.
This is a book written for general audiences who know nothing of the Borgias. Juan is “gay and lighthearted” and Cesare has “a brooding beauty.” Lucrezia just wants everyone to get along. Rodrigo likes being generous because it’s important his supplicants have a reason to show their gratitude at his openhandedness (it’s why the Borgias were famous for throwing the biggest parties in Rome). Vanozza is weirdly not involved in her children’s upbringing at all. I like this Giulia, she shoots from the hip: “if I were to have an affair with a groom—ah, then I should be beaten” parallels Lucrezia’s later affair with Pedro Calderón, who is little more than an upjumped groom. I dislike that Giulia is shuffled offscreen so early. I suspect structurally we got rid of Giulia just as Sancia arrived in Rome, because Lucrezia only needs one “rival” at a time, and all the women—Lucrezia Borgia, Sancia of Aragon, Giulia Farnese—are in the end rivals for male adulation. That’s the bedrock assumption of this novel. It’s not interrogated, it’s just assumed. I mean, ????!!
I guess it’s kinda interesting that Lucrezia makes no distinction between fraternal and romantic attention/adulation? A couple times she opens the door expecting her husband and gets her brother. She compares her husband’s smiles to her brother’s, unfavorably. This first book (it’s a duology) ends with Juan’s murder, so “husband” refers to her first husband, Giovanni Sforza, who is jealous—with good reason!—of her unwavering attachment to her natal family:
”And whence came this trinket?” he would ask. “My father gave it to me,” would invariably be the answer. Or: “It is a gift from my brother.”
The problem is that Plaidy’s Lucrezia is discomfited by and would like to extirpate that familial attachment, and I just can’t get behind this reading. Look at this:
She must find a compensation for this overpowering love which she bore toward her family. Was a convent the answer?
Seriously?! All of Italy fears and loathes and envies the Borgias; her family are the only people she trusts. It’s true that canonically she’s ambivalent about how close she is to her fam but whenever push comes to shove Lucrezia Borgia always, always chooses her family. That’s just the facts ma’am. And yet Jean Plaidy really be putting these words in Lucrezia’s POV:
They were her guardians; they were her jailers. She had no life that was not designed by them.
Again, Lucrezia is a (metaphorical) prisoner, her father and brother are the evil masterminds. Girl, give me a fucking break.
And if she betrayed Cesare and her father! They would never trust her again; she would be shut out from the trinity of love and devotion on which she had come to rely.
It’s really starting to look like an abusive relationship huh? ie. Lucrezia has never known love that didn’t come with hooks attached.
I am not saying this book is not worth reading, or does not have any good qualities—I quite enjoyed the voluptuousness of the prose—but my disagreement with the overall vision colored my reaction to everything else. Here are some quotes that I was fond of:
”Madonna Adriana is a very good woman,” insisted Lucrezia. “I don’t like good women,” retorted Giulia. “Is that because they make us all feel so wicked?” teased Lucrezia.
GIULA!!!! Gone too soon, we hardly knew ye. My favorite line in the entire book is in fact from the following exchange between Giulia and Lucrezia—Giulia wants to go to her dying brother’s bedside but it’s a delicate time (the French army has overrun the peninsula) and Giulia’s all “you would go if it was your brother” and Lucrezia’s response is GOLD:
”But it is not Cesare, nor Giovanni,” said Lucrezia, calmly. “It is only Angelo.”
This from Rodrigo is also good:
”Lucrezia is a Borgia,” said Alexander. “And Borgias see great virtue in Borgias.”
And finally, some Cesare/Lucrezia content:
”My dearest sister, no matter whom they chose for your husband, I should hate him.”
”Cesare, why are you upset about this marriage? You know I have to marry, and it makes no difference to my love for you. I could never love any as I love you.”
Cesare was to her the most important person in the world.
Cesare had triumphed, and Cesare’s triumphs were as important to her as her own.
”Why is it that all other men seem small and insignificant beside you?”
”What has his gentleness toward her to do with his cruelty toward others?”
I am reading the sequel, Light on Lucrezia, for the sake of completeness but let me tell you guys I am not having a good time.

King of Scars Review.
I liked this book. I liked the Six of Crows duology better, but I think that may be because I was so involved with the characters before reading this one. And seeing that it was within the series, I wanted to see those characters again.
This book has several main characters again, which I love. Nikolai is a major character and one of the most important main characters, I think. He has a demon inside of him and he’s trying to fight it while rebuilding Ravka. Nina is in this book, too. She is working as a spy for Nikolai and saving Grisha. She’s trying to rebuild her life after losing Matthias (my poor fucking heart). Zoya, who was in Crooked Kingdom briefly (Nikolai was, too) is the Kings commander. She’s trying to help Nikolai rebuild his Kingdom as well as make it a safe place for Grisha like her.
I liked that this book ties in so much of the universe. I feel like we know more of the Grishaverse and we can see all these beautiful layers within the story. I can't wait to read the other books within this world, too. It’s such a complicated but well done world.
I dislike one of the implied romances. I think it was implied at least. It’s towards the end, so I wont say who BUT IT’S TOO SOON. I AM STILL UPSET. Anyone who has read this book will understand who I am talking about.
I like Nikolai. He’s funny and charming. He puts his country first, always above himself and keeps running at the goal to make it a better, safer place. I find that admirable.
I dislike Jarl. Can he just die already? His hatred is disgusting and the methods of torture he uses on Grisha are vile.
From what I hear, this is going to be a duology. But I found no titles or release date last time I checked.
There is also a trilogy in this world: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm and Ruin and Rising.
I think The Language of Thorns might be a stand alone.
Here is a link to buy/check out King of Scars:
https://amzn.to/2IFaHUW
I am currently reading: The Darkest Minds. I have reviews reading for Now I Rise, Broken Throne and Zombies vs. Unicorns for you guys.
Lastly, I plan to post some original short stories by me starting tomorrow. They’re works I love but couldn’t find a place to have the published. I have two I wanna post so far and I post them after book reviews.
Thanks for reading! If you have any book suggestions, let me know and I will add it to my list! If you made a book suggestion, I will be sure to shout you out in the review!

Reproduction in the GFFA Part Three: Using it in Fanfic
Nobody has given me a better name for artificial wombs based off cloning tanks for the GFFA as discussed in Reproduction in the GFFA, so I'm using gestational chambers. And since I can't sew up a Free Ryloth Twi'lek costume right now, I decided to give you guys some summary fic as to how I would introduce the concept of gestational chambers to the GFFA. It probably won't become a more polished story because of other writing projects, unless someone else wants to take it as a plot bunny and go.
Setting is post-Luke/Callista break-up and after Mara Jade acquires Jade's Fire. I'm a little fuzzy on that time period in Legends continuity. I own Children of the Jedi and Darksaber, but I don't remember reading the second one. And I don't remember if I had read Planet of Twilight and never bothered to buy it either. But this is set before the Hand of Thrawn duology and probably the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy too.
Best Laid Plans
Mara delivers some supplies to the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 and arranges for a few days stay, sparring practice, catching up with the Jedi she knows, uses showing off the Fire's flight capabilities as a pretense to get to talk to Luke alone. Luke is excited by her improvements to the ship, and doesn't ruin the outing by being morose about his break-up or by nagging Mara to finish her training. So she jumps into what she wants to tell him. "I've been saving my credits to buy my own ship, but I got the Fire without spending the bulk of it. So I decided to spend it on a baby instead."
Luke is a little shocked. "You and Lando need funds for a baby?"
"I'm not having a baby with Lando. We're not involved like that any more." (Keeping the relationship cover story intact.) Before Luke can derail the conversation into unnecessary condolences, she continues. "There's a clinic on Coruscant, very private and discreet, that uses gestational chambers. That's what I have to pay for, but I can keep working without any danger to the baby."
"That's not how it's done on Tatooine," Luke teases. "I never thought about them."
"Most people don't unless there's fertility or genetic compatibility issues. But since I don't want a clone, I need donor sperm. I can use sperm the clinic has or supply my own donor. Would you want to have a child with me?"
Luke never saw that request coming, but Mara defends her choice. Out of all the men she knows, Luke has the qualities she wants for the father of her child. And she's seen him with his niece and nephews and knows he wants a child of his own. But no pressure, think about it and meditate on it. Luke tells her regardless of his choice, she will make a wonderful mother.
Luke does meditate on it and they talk about what type of parenting partner does Mara desire (whatever he is comfortable with). Luke has a vision of a boy and girl with Mara's hair, and that's what sways him over to saying yes. Mara leaves Yavin 4 with Luke's deposit in a specimen jar.
Time lapse because I'm undecided at what stage of fetal development the future baby boy is at. Luke makes a trip to Coruscant to see what's happening and Cilghal has a list of questions/observations she wants answers to about fetal development of a Force Sensitive baby. He catches up with Mara. She's planning out the Fire's new cabin configuration to house a baby on board. He wants to know when they plan on telling everyone and has an offer for later. Cilghal, Kam, Tionne, Leia, and Han have all told him he needs a break from the Academy, so what if he traveled with her after the baby is born. No interference with her business, just two adults bonding with their infant.
Mara likes the idea, but before she has an answer, the HoloNet blows up with the story that Luke Skywalker is having a baby with far too many accurate details. Mara is livid and goes to the clinic. Luke heads to Leia and Han.
Han questions Luke on why when Luke confirms the story is true. Luke is bitter in front of him and Leia. "None of my relationships have lasted long enough for children and the children's services considers my lifestyle and lack of co-parent detrimental to me adopting a child. Are you really that surprised?"
Mara arrives at Leia and Han's quarters with news that Fey'lya was behind it at the same time Leia's aides figure it out. His motivations is apparently to spoil any political ambitions Luke has. "But I don't have any political ambitions," Luke protests. More importantly, Mara doesn't want to prevent Luke from seeing/raising his son because of all this. She knew about his notoriety before asking him.
Another time lapse fill in with whatever you want between Luke and Mara. Everything is going quiet again media-wise and then the clinic alerts them both: the gestational chamber with their baby has been stolen. The evidence at the clinic points to a Force user with a lightwhip, Lumiya. You can substitute another villain if you'd like; I thought she'd be fun for the previous history she's had with Luke and Mara separately.
So they're off in the Fire to rescue their son. They briefly stop at Yavin 4 for supplies, namely Luke's shoto and materials to make one for Mara. The perfect opportunity to nag Mara about training, but Luke doesn't take it, which is almost as upsetting as her plan to keep her son safe was ruined by Lumiya of all people. On Luke's part, I think he's finally learned futility in asking for what he wants. It has never worked with Mara and it didn't work with Callista.
Close quarters on a ship, intense training sessions demanded by Mara so she can get her shoto technique up to par with her other skills, and it doesn't take long for one spar to devolve into a make-out session. Spurred on because as the first kiss happened, Luke picked up on Mara's mental demand Don't pull away; you always pull away. Challenge accepted and it escalates quickly after than.
Luke wakes up from his post-coitus doze in Mara's cabin alone in the bed. And he has enough alone time to get deep into what the hell just happened thoughts before she returns from the galley with two mugs and wearing his tunic.
"Regrets already?" Mara passes him a mug of hot chocolate and perches on the edge of the bunk.
"I don't regret this, but I am confused. You never gave me any sign you were interested in more than just friendship."
"I never? I all but poured myself into that silver flight suit at the opening of the Academy for you and you never noticed!"
"I noticed you never wanted to stay with me. You always ran back to Karrde."
"You never wanted me to stay, just my talent in the Force. Karrde cares about all of me."
That observation from Mara deflates all of Luke's defensive huffiness. "I never meant it like that. All everyone has wanted out of me was being a Jedi; what else do I have to offer? I am sorry, Mara. You deserved more consideration from me and I failed you." While Mara's still processing that unexpected apology, he continues. "That explains Lando. He cared about the whole woman and expressed that. Smarter man than me."
"Wait, you've been jealous of Lando all this time? But you've had relationships. You ran to other women."
"Jealous of you with Lando, yes. Ashamed of myself for feeling that over your happiness when I should have felt nothing but joy for you both, yes. Of course I tried to move on. I know what to do when I'm not the wanted one."
Mara explains how the whole thing with her and Lando was just a cover story. "I never intended to make you jealous. I thought you didn't want me."
"I want you. Wanted you for so long. Do you want me? Do you want to continue?"
Mara puts down her mug, straddles his lap, and gives him a chocolate-flavored kiss. "Yes."
So after they've reached this level of understanding, they defeat Lumiya and return their son to the clinic. He's fine, and his parents are officially a couple.
The end I came up with is Luke comes back from meetings or something and finds Mara hovering over the sani. "We should have never had sex," she growls at him.
"But we're good at the sex." Luke starts to comfort her and gets down on the floor with her. "Why do you want to stop?"
She glares at him. "That's not what I said." She presses his hand against her stomach. "I'm pregnant. You got me pregnant."
She's not really angry under her morning sickness grumpiness, but her plans! She used to be GOOD at planning things. Luke is ecstatic and declares it must be a girl based on his earlier vision. The end.
I hope you enjoyed reading this. I learned a bit about my inspiration process. Dialogue comes first with the situation that creates the dialogue. Action sequences come later and that includes fight and sex scenes, which probably explains why I gloss over them in first drafts and have to make a concentrated effort to expand and explain them. And if anyone wants to flesh this scenario out to a full story, you've have my blessing.
