its so funny to me how many people just. dont like belphegor at all like YEAH ok he killed us and hated humans but like. idk i dont entirely blame him considering everything that happened with lilith, even if i dont agree with it.
but like after all that he literally just becomes another guy. a really sleepy one which like. BIG mood ngl. and then him and beel are just so wonderful together i love when they have scenes together its just so good aishufsdhfihdg theyre like the only brothers that get along more often than not i think its sweet
he was traumatized and lashed out unfairly, which isnt okay at all but as someone whose been in very traumatic situations... things are very black and white and obvious to you only because youre in defensive mode? bad way to explain it but its not easy to control when youve never had the tools to do so, only after therapy have i been able to be like... normal with my emotions?
NO HATE NOR JUDGEMENT to anyone who doesnt rock with him obvs! people have different tastes i just think its kinda funny how much vitriol some people have toward him and him only, and none of the other guys

Tbh I would recommend Demon slayer because it's pretty short(the manga's 205 chapters and already finished) it's not like. Revolutionary and there's definitely some sexism(it's 1920's Japan... Though it doesn't focus on the political climate so no imperialism or militarism thank god) but it does what it meant to do well imo. I think it has a nice balance of plot vs character (the plot progresses but each character and most background characters are fairly fleshed out and get their own conclusion)
It has pretty par for the course themes in terms of shonen anime- comments on what makes someone human and choosing to see the humanity in those who have wronged you/others and how people in bad circumstances can make bad decisions if preyed on by people with more power(and often in the end choosing to be better/seeing where they went wrong when someone offers them the kindness life never did). People in bad circumstances doing the best they can because that's all they can do etc
(I also like the pacing, it's pretty fast paced and concise, but everything still gets the attention it needs + the anime has amazing animation)
So yeah while it's definitely not high-brow™ it's good at what it does!
Cool!! Sounds fun honestly!! I like the art style I just never got around to it 😭 and don’t worry about it’s length or issues I am. I am a one piece manga reader I can handle it 🤡😔

I WATCHED GOOD OMENS IN FRENCH SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO
and it wasn’t that bad. Here are my thoughts, barely edited as I wrote most of them while watching the show.
EP 1
OK i like god’s voice so far

crowley sounds like a little shit asking az about his sword

im being reminded that the chattering nuns prepared little cut outs for their explanation about the antichrist switch… such dedication to useless crafts (it made me laugh on my first viewing and it’s still funny to imagine that some of them either ordered or built these things themselves just so they could make this two minutes long presentation for the most important act of their satanic nun careers)

the english version has nothing on french speaking aziraphale for the second hand embarrassement during the magic tour. it’s over 9000 i literally hid my head in my jumper when he was presenting harry the bunny. Horrible experience, 0/20, would not recommend

shadwell is pure chaos (as expected). No particular accent for him though, the chaotic energy was probably enough. Would have made me laugh if he had like, a chti or a marseilles accent.

i was wondering how they would play aziraphale not being able to speak french in the bastille and they opted to have him stutter a bit and say to his executionner « excuse me i’m anxious » XD

l’apocalypse c’est pour aujourd’hui juste après le goûter : it could be translated as « apocalypse is scheduled for today right after tea time » except that « goûter » is not quite tea time but rather the little sugary snack kids take when they come back from school and that most adults drop out of (i haven’t and i’m sure az hasn’t either). thanks aziraphale for having exclusively food related notion of the time because tbh same
ligur has no right to be this sexy between ariyon bakare and his french voice actor that’s just not allowed
radio crowley’s voice vs french ligur’s voice, who has the sexiest voice : FIGHT
(jk french agnes nutter’s voice is by far the sexiest)
gender neutral doesn’t ‘quite’ exist in french but pollution has been assigned a female voice actress and masculine pronouns (i’m saying it doesn’t quite exist because officially we have no gender neutral, but it’s a serious wip among lgbt+ circles to the point where it’s started being used in a few medias)
hastur « en attendant qu’un plombier vienne » / « while waiting for a plumber to come » does hell have a special plumber unit or do demons have to call on human plumbers for their pipes damages ? Dang hastur having to call a human plumber for hell’s plumbery is another damn good writing prompt for a crack fic

EP 5 
to get a wiggle on has become « il faut qu’on se remue les fesses », literally « we need to shake our butts » like, yes, se remuer les fesses is a common expression to say « we need to act in order to get things done » but it really casts the image of people shaking their booty to some music and obviously crowley thinks the same Weirdly enough I have almost nothing to say for that episode. Sorry. But we’ve discovered most voice actors and actresses so far and no bit of dialogue really struck me as worth discussing or pointing fingers to mock it.
EP 6 
« on va BROUTER quelques derrières » - « we’re gonna lick some butts » OK THIS IS UNQUESTIONNABLY FAR SUPERIOR IN FRENCH THAN IN ENGLISH you thought LICKING butts was good ??? you really thought that ???? AZIRAPHALE HERE SUGGESTS TO GRAZE BUTTS. TO NIBBLE THEM. TO EAT THEM. TO. MUNCH. ON. THOSE. BUTTS!!!! not just licking, guys. This is as serious step beyond licking. (oh yeah he should have said « botter » instead of brouter btw, which is really just kicking, fyi)
« moi je crois en la paix, pétasse ! » wow, language, pepper (fyi i think « pétasse » is far far worse than « bitch » even if it means roughly the same, pétasse is almost never used while bitch is rather common, so it’s a swear word +++)

I can confirm that Crowley offers Aziraphale to not just stay at his place, but to move in with him. « tu peux t’installer chez moi si tu veux ». omg they were roommates.
Bad translation strikes again : i don’t know why, but the french dub doesn’t have the « tickety-boo » / « ça gaze » being referenced as Rampa / Aziraphale is being knocked down, which is… a real mistep. It was narratively significant and I’m quite mad the translators missed it.
The Jesse James explanation from Newt has become very nonsensical, instead of the neat and to the point pun « wherever I go I hold up trafic » we’re getting a circonvoluted « because it’s a crime to mechanic’s diligence ». I’m not judging that one too hard, I have no idea how to make it better, and that’s probably how it was translated in the book as well thirty years ago, but it definitely doesn’t have the same impact. On the other hand, it definitely IS a very bad joke that doesn’t even deserve a chuckle, so Anathema’s embarassement really matches the audience’s (aka mine).
OVERALL :
I wasn’t convinced by Crowley… I mean, Rampa’s voice at first, but as the nerdiness showed up it really grew on me. I still think that french dubs have often problems with some voice inflexions every here and there, and for instance in Rampa’s case it was when he was annoyed or frustrated ( at the Globe when complaining about horses and Shakespeare’s plays that aren’t comedies, and also when discussing Azirphale’s magic tricks, it’s like… there is a step between having the right amount of grumpy complaining and overdoing it that is overlooked. It’s overacted, it should have been a bit quieter imo. I don’t mean to criticize voice actors too hard either but as an audience watching french dubs this is a very recurring problem and it always feels off to me. It’s actually one of the main reasons I avoid french dubs whenever possible.)
I have a hard time judging Aziraphale’s voice dub because it clashes so much with both the idea I had formed with it when I read the book and Sheen’s delivery that I just… kinda filtered it. It was too high pitched for me, and too anxious (though for this last point I must admit it could be funny at times, but I’m not fond of this character portrayal). The rest of the cast was rather good, nothing to complain about. There wasn’t anything stellar either, but everything that needed to be conveyed was and it was professionnal. It was also very homogeneous, no voice really struck me as being way too bad or way too good compared to the others, so it was really consistant.
So I don’t have much to complain about overall despite a few wonky translations here and there, BUT there is one thing I felt very robbed of : Crowley calling Aziraphale « mon ange » happens only once, when giving a lift to Anathema, and I’m almost certain they translated it that way because otherwise the joke about Anathama mistaking them for a couple wouldn’t work. So, they were forced to make it that way. The rest of the time Crowley calls Aziraphale « l’angelot », and despite being literally translated by « little angel », it feels sarcastic more than anything else ( the « L’ » in front of « angelot » is part of the reason why, it creates some distance, the other reason being that this word in itself has a very corny vibe and people being affectionnate to each other wouldn’t use it as a term of endearment). So, that’s a shame.
I like the English dub much much MUCH better than the French, but the french wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. The voice actors and actresses were quite good, the dialogues mostly faithful and endearing despite a few really missed steps. It really had its moments. Props to brouter des derrières, that one was fantastic.

im gonna put it under a cut so i dont annoy anyone who doesnt wanna see it 
its kinda a romance/supernatural/mystery/horror/kinda tragedy story? 
13 years (or 16 if its the drama) before the start of the story one of the main characters, wei wuxian, died after getting real into necromancy and pissing off everyone in charge. he’s brought back from the dead and the story covers what happened leading up to him becoming probably the most hated man in the world and what happens after he comes back from the dead. it also shows his romance (or “friendship” if its the drama) with the second protagonist lan zhan. 
i’ve only gone through the drama and about half of the book so i don’t have all the details yet but ive got a general idea on most of it. 
theres the book which is 113 chapters long with 13 bonus chapters. this is what all the other versions are based on. it does have wei wuxian and lan zhan in a romantic relationship, but it is bl written by a straight woman thats very obviously fetishizing gay men so it has very very noticeable issues with how their relationship is written. if you want me to go into specifics lmk and i will. ive seen a lot of people recommend getting into a visual version of it first since these characters all have several names and it can get kinda confusing if you don’t have a face to put the name to but that’s up to you. 
edit since i’ve finished the book since i first wrote this: if you do read the book, do Not read the incense burner bonus chapters. the chapter between them (villainous friends) is perfectly fine, but those two are just nasty rape porn and not worth anyone’s time. the main book also has some consent issues with the romance but, from my understanding, is kinda par for the course with a lot of bl content and nowhere near as bad as those chapters. not to make it sound like thats ok, cuz like. it isnt, its just begrudgingly tolerable for me personally outside of those two chapters.
theres also an animated version (also officially on youtube), a comic (both of which are still ongoing), and two audio dramas (one in chinese and one in japanese but i think you can find them with english subtitles) that i’ve been told all stick to the book pretty well and also have the relationship being romantic. i haven’t gone through any of these yet so i’m not sure how they compare with the story or how they handle the relationship but im gonna assume based on the fact that everywhere ive found the animated version and comic lists them as yaoi that they’re in a similar position as the book but probably not as bad in some ways. 
the drama (also officially on netflix and youtube) has a different name (the untamed) and diverges from the original story kinda a lot and doesn’t have the relationship be explicitly romantic but it’s still pretty gay and i’d say still very much a romance even if it’s different and in some ways actually handles their relationship better than the book since it doesn’t have the bl tropes piled on or the consent issues that the book has. there’s a decent amount of structure and plot changes between book and show, most noticeably a whole new side storyline and changing who invented demonic cultivation and changing the order things happen in sometimes. it has two spin off movies that i haven’t seen yet and know very little about but they’re out there (the living dead and fatal journey). 
edit since ive seen the movies now: fatal journey was pretty good, living dead was not imo but idk you might like it. also the plot changes are mostly to streamline or for censorship and i think most of them are perfectly fine for the most part, but some things i for sure like better in the book.

what are the stupidest things your books have been rejected by publishers for? just curious, of course, you don't have to answer. I'm just kind of curious about the kind of thing I might have to expect if I ever start trying to publish my own fantasy stuff
you are an enabler, anon, and i love you for it. obv everything will be kept strictly anonymous, but i’ve had five books out on sub (on submission/sent to editors by my agent) and it took me two years and three books to get my first agent (from the moment i started querying to when i got the offer of rep) so i love being honest about it. with my second agent it was easier bc i had a referral from a friend who is also a client of his, though i’m gearing up to query my adult manuscript in august or so (my agent only reps children’s books). 
and since we’ll be talking about rejections…lemme share some rambling info!
this is the norm, all fledgling writers! the norm is to take years to get an agent, years to sell a book (if you sell at all), and years to write the book that will sell. the quick stories you hear are always always always the exception to the rule. for example, i have two friends who got an agent for their first book, and that agent went on to sell those books (both to the Big 5). on the flipside, i have a friend who got her agent on one book, didn’t sell that book, wrote four more with that agent, sold one of them to an indie press, left that agent (there was a lot of bullshit that prompted this), queried her eighth book, got an agent for that book, and sold it to a Big 5 a few months later. i have a friend who signed with an agent for her first book, that book didn’t sell (the agent was pretty shitty), my friend left the agent, wrote three books and queried them over a span of two years, and then got three offers of rep within a week. 
i’d have to dig through my laptop to find the exact number, but i got over 200 rejections from agents, and i’m now nudging up against 100 rejections from editors. believe me, i question why i keep writing and keep pursuing publication all the time, and i’ve found that the reason i keep going is bc i can’t imagine myself not writing. so i write first and foremost for me, my friends, my critique partners, my little sister, everyone who likes my books. i keep writing bc my agent has been one of my biggest support systems (we’re coming up on two years working together in august) and without him asking for my next books, i probably wouldn’t still be writing. 
imo, the #1 trick to not giving up is having a good support system. i’ve somehow lucked out in the people who care for and encourage me to keep writing. publishing is one of the hardest industries to break into, bc having a good book is only a fraction of what’s required to make it. imo, luck will always be the reason you get a book deal. always. and the best piece of advice i can give a writer sending their books out into the world is to let the rejections slide off. it’s the only way to stay sane. 
SO. REJECTIONS. lemme go dig through my inbox for them. the #1 reason i’m rejected over and over again is bc of my world-building, which i typically (according to ya editors) have too much of. the stupid thing, imo, is when a rejection will come back with “loved it, beautiful prose, kat writes so well, i can’t believe she’s only [insert age]” which i abhor bc that doesn’t tell me anything. if you loved it, why are you rejecting it? what the hell can i fix in my ms if you loved it but rejected it? (you’ll get these kinds of rejections a lot, i guarantee it.) 
i got one that made it clear the person never read the book, bc they rejected it for having demons in it, which conflicted with their religious beliefs. and don’t get me wrong, everyone is absolutely entitled to reject what they don’t want and i respect anyone who bases this off their religion, but the fact the person had my book, saw the word “demon,” and automatically put it down without even seeing if my demons were in a religious vein or not (which they weren’t! i’m very conscious of being respectful to other religions) just irked me. 
i’ve been rejected for having too much diversity in my books (this was before i was out as bi, too, so i couldn’t claim ownvoices). in the wake of “diverse” books like The Black Witch and The Continent, the general rule of thumb now is for editors to not pick up a diverse book in case the rep is bad. i think i’ve ranted about that before on here so i’ll spare you. and i’ve heard from a few editors now that if there is a conflict mentioned in the pitch of a fantasy, they automatically assume it’s a conflict based on race. i have NO idea why they do that, but it causes a lot of them to prematurely reject a ms. 
i got one rejection for a book (that i’m thinking of sharing on wattpad, actually!) bc my book might–MIGHT–be a conflict of interest with a middle grade they were developing in-house. the stupid part of this? she rejected based off the pitch alone. didn’t even read the book to come to that decision. 
i got one rejection that said, and i quote: 
“While I was drawn to the premise and the themes the novel explores, the world and characters ultimately didn’t grab me the way I had hoped. For that reason and others, I’m afraid it’s a pass for [redacted].”
“for that reason and others.” this is why writers scream a lot. 
i got rejected bc my book was “too high fantasy for our list”. too high fantasy. for a fantasy imprint. too. high. fantasy. what the hell does that even mean? 
here’s a sentence from an editor who loved the book, gave a glowing paragraph of reasons for that, but rejected nonetheless: “I think this is an instance where the writing is perhaps too rich and distinctive.” do you have any idea what to make of that? bc i sure as hell don’t. 
i had one editor say “yes i’m putting together an offer!” on friday, and then came back the following monday with “i’m passing bc it’s too complicated.” tbh i still sometimes wonder if the editor got me mixed up with someone else, but c’est la vie for writers. 
here’s another section from a different editor (who actually asked for an early exclusive on the manuscript, and my heart will forever remain bitter over this): 
“I’m sorry that it isn’t a fit for me—not because [Kat’s] writing isn’t incredibly strong, or the world isn’t richly developed, but because some of the building blocks of [island name] reminded me of THREE DARK CROWNS by Kendare Blake.”
mmkay. sure. right. don’t mind me, that’s just me screaming into the void again. 
i got one rejection bc i had a magic book in the world. i got one rejection bc a secondary character’s magic was too similar to the darkling (i mentioned it in the post that prompted this question, i think, but for newbies: my character could animate shadows. apparently that’s on par with controlling darkness). i got rejected bc the book was in third person. i got rejected bc the book was in first person. i got rejected bc there were too many POVs (three POVs is apparently too much, who knew?). i got rejected bc the editor didn’t have the “must be mine” feeling. the stupidest (and rudest, imo) rejections are when an editor just…never responds, even when they’re friends with my agent. 
the most appalling rejection i’ve gotten was from an editor (of a friend of mine!) who rejected bc they had “fantasy fatigue,” and then a month later this same editor ended up offering on a fantasy by another friend of mine, who went on sub shortly after i got the rejection from the editor. so, y’know, “fantasy fatigue” my ass. 😑😑😑
okay i think that’s enough. heh. there’s a glimpse into the world of publishing and just how frustrating it is. a lot of rejections sound the same, and you’ll encounter that a lot when you’re a good enough writer. when there’s nothing that needs to be fixed, yet an editor passes anyway, it means you’re a good writer, just not the right one at the right time.
