Idk which post y’all are talking about where someone said Will was being a dick at rink-o-mania but if you want to argue that Will wasn’t being a dick then Mike wasn’t either🤷‍♀️
Simply since the only reason y’all think Will wasn’t being a dick is because we got those scenes from his perspective. We know why and how excited Will was to see Mike so when Mike doesn’t hug him at the airport we feel with Will and how disappointed he is. From then on he’s moping, barely talking and rolling his eyes at everything and that’s a fact like, Mike wasn’t exaggerating at all and Will also doesn’t deny it but tells him how uncomfortable thirdwheeling made him feel. And we’ve seen Will third wheeling throughout the whole of those scenes so we understand why Will is acting like a dick which is why y’all are so quick to excuse his actions and say he wasn’t being a dick. Even though he actually did behave like an asshole (ignored Mike the whole day) to the point where Mike told him that he sabotaged the day for him! Here we get Mike’s perspective of the day for the first time and I’m honestly baffled by how quick y’all are to excuse Will’s actions at rink-o-mania and defend him just because there’s a reason to his actions but despite the fact that we literally talk about Mike’s reasons for his own actions on here almost every single day y’all still label him as a dick???? Still label him as “the bad guy” because “just because he has reasons to act the way he does doesn’t mean he wasn’t still being a dick” but somehow that doesn’t apply to Will???
And I’m really not trying to be mean here but y’all really need to get your perspectives straight because I will never understand how people get mad over the fact that Mike said Will ruined his day and not Angela even though the answer to that is literally at hand! Rink-o-mania was only a fraction of the whole day and Will basically ignored and rolled his eyes at Mike ever since Mike arrived in Lenora! Yes, Mike is to blame for this because of that weird ass airport hug but just because there’s a reason as to why Will acted like a dick doesn’t mean he wasn’t still acting like a dick!! And he was acting like one throughout the whole fucking day! Airport, drive to the breakfast burrito place, stay at the breakfast burrito place, drive to rink-o-mania and stay at rink-o-mania. Will barely talked to Mike throughout all of that so of course that’s what sabotaged the day for Mike and not Angela because 1). Will has been Mike’s closest friend since forever and during the months they spent apart from each other they lost contact for which both are to blame equally as much! So Mike was probably feeling anxious and unsure about wether Will actually missed him/still cared about him! 2). That’s one reason why Mike was kinda icing Will out at the airport and I can imagine that he didn’t even fully pick up on how excited Will was at first since he was focused on acting indifferent. And 3). Will’s demeanor changed instantly to icing Mike out so from Mike’s perspective it seemed like Will wasn’t happy to see him which confirmed Mike’s fear that Will doesn’t care about him anymore. And like, Mike never acted like Angela bullying El wasn’t horrible! But quite frankly, realizing that my best friend doesn’t care about me anymore while I still care so much about them would absolutely crush my whole day above anything else too because that’s the kind of hurt that runs deep! Especially when you add to that that Mike is in love with Will! That’s why Mike uses El’s name instead of his own when confronting Will! He did it to protect his own feelings. And y’all think Mike didn’t realize he was being stupid when Will told him about the thirdwheeling? Didn’t get the biggest reality check that it was his own fault that Will was icing him out? He 100% did! And that look Mike gives Will after “Well what about us?” that everyone goes feral over to this day? That’s when Mike realizes that Will does actually still care about him and their connection and it overwhelms him that Will was able to look right through him so he’s getting defensive again! Mike ices out Will again which is why Will thinks he was wrong in assuming that Mike was hurt that he didn’t talk to him! “You don’t have to say anything, I was being a total jerk to El, I deserved it” that’s what Will says after Mike tries to apologize! Will is not the one apologizing for acting like a dick to Mike not because he wasn’t acting like one, but because at that moment he still didn’t get that the point was that he hurt Mike! That’s why Mike tells Will that he feels like he lost him! He realized that him icing Will out lead to Will icing him out and that’s why he’s like no look Will, you didn’t deserve what I said to you because I understand why you acted the way you did so let me tell you why I acted the way I did! That’s mostly the reason why Will is tearing up in that scene, not only because Mike apologizes but because Mike let’s him know that he still cares about him deeply!!
So they both had good reasons to act like dicks to each other but they also both still acted like dicks! Yes, Will too!

honestly i used to find the hate anons soo funny bc like 'aww did my silly little au abt two characters i like upset you?? :(( so sad 😞😥 what will i ever do now that you don't like the ship i write for my pleasure' but nowadays they just piss me off. bc like how entitled do you have to be to go into someone else's ask box. and just like send them hate for not doing something you want. like the hating actually requires them to go out of their way???? WHAT is their problem like. i actually want to know the thought process behind sending anonymous hate to someone for having fun and sharing their amazing content in the first place
im not in many fandoms but even in the ones im in i've NEVER seen fandom writers and artists get treated so horribly. genuinely pisses me off bc like. you guys are actually so sweet?? im not that into marauders fandom rn but i've read many of your works (especially your pandalily btw. im in love with them) and they're all so lovely!! and so are you!! i hope you have a wonderful day and that any ppl that think sending hate is okay slip on a banana peel or something idk
i totally get what you mean nonnie and honestly . kinda same . i mean i'm mostly indifferent to them, they don't affect me much, but i fucking hate seeing my friends (or any authors/artists really) get hate for their work. makes me feel downright murderous. bc you're right, i've been in so many fandoms, and ofc there's always assholes, but never in my life i've seen this amount of . awfulness directed at ppl for simply making art of the ships and characters they like??? it's so baffling to me. and i genuinely don't get it. there's also a lot of . couples and hcs or portrayals of certain characters i despise and yet i never get the urge to send the ppl who do enjoy them hate?? i mute or i block, maybe complain about it to my friends IN PRIVATE and i curate my own experience. like almost everyone i know does. i don't understand these ppl's problem i really don't
but well, i guess i've reached my limit + grown bored of these trolls bc i've been deleting and blocking the stupid asks they keep sending me. i'm not entertaining them anymore. they can continue being as hateful as they want, but not in my space thank u <33
anyways I'M SO HAPPY U ENJOY MY PANDALILY SO MUCH god they're my girls, i've been thinking about them a lot more lately, i need to continue with all the violence sequel bc i'm going through serious withdrawals.. you're soooo sweet, i hope your day is/was the fucking best and i'm kissing u so soundly on the forehead MWAH

⭐️ would love to hear more! (If there are still things you’d like to discuss :))
I mentioned Kuvira and now I feel like that’s what I want to talk about. As always, spoilers below the line.
She is so infuriatingly complicated! Her character in the show is at once manipulative, loving (in an extremely twisted way), calculating, and unbelievably strong. She’s a villain, a hero, an artist, a creator, and a destroyer. My interpretation of her canon character is that, at the most fundamental level, her convictions/beliefs reign supreme and when she’s decided what is right or what she wants, she commits herself to it 100%, regardless of means or consequences. When two of those convictions are at odds with each other (like Baatar Jr. asking her to give up on conquering Republic City), she knows she has to choose. But once the choice is made, there’s no looking back. Her character is all internal calculations/considerations and pure action on the outside. Woof. It’s a tough way to live.
Characteristically, she baffled me for Where The Snow Takes Us. And she’s supposed to! I tried to be true to her clean cut, calculating nature in the way she talked with Korra. She can be so slimy and manipulative and I wanted that to come through. But at the same time, she and Korra did love each other at some point. And it wasn’t fake either. So here I was trying to strike a delicate balance between showing that that love existed and had merit but had faded and started hurting instead. Korra staying in the relationship for as long as she did needed to make sense! It was so hard, guys. Not even sure if I got it right, but I tried my best.
The way I see the timeline is that during Christmas & New Years, before the break-up, Kuvira is floating between two convictions: she has her relationship with Korra and whatever the thing is that’s growing with Baatar Jr. And at that point all she’s decided is that she wants to have time to figure it out. And because she’s rudely unapologetic about getting hers, she takes all the time she needs and treats Korra (and probs Baatar, honestly) as shittily as she feels like it. The goal was for Korra (and the reader) to get glimpses of villain Kuvira without really seeing her fully. But once Kuvira decides she wants to be with Baatar... that’s it. She goes to end it with Korra and she’s cold and clean and calculated. I wanted to write the break-up as if a fully-realized Book 4 Kuvira finally showed up in Ch. 14:
“Alright.” Kuvira cleared her throat and stood facing Korra in what looked no less threatening than an at-ease soldier stance. Not the least bit alarming. “I’m not going to tiptoe around this.” She paused and exhaled roughly. “This isn’t working. We are not working.”
Korra’s eyebrows nearly hit her hairline. She had fully prepared herself to do a lot of convincing, expecting Kuvira to be blissfully unaware that Korra was unhappy with her. “Um. Yeah. I… completely agree, actually.”
One of Kuvira’s eyebrows twitched and the corner of her mouth curled upward slightly. “Well, this is going to be much easier than I thought. We both agree then. It’s over.”
And then I couldn’t help myself and felt like I needed to show that Korra hadn’t just spent five years of her life dating someone with the emotional capacity of a stone:
Kuvira sighed again and walked over to where Korra sat. She lowered herself onto the coffee table opposite Korra and rested her elbows on her knees. As Korra wiped at her eyes with the heels of her hands, she noticed Kuvira looked less put together than she had a minute ago. Her grey-green eyes had softened from their hard indifference and she seemed almost apologetic. A shadow of the Kuvira that Korra had fallen in love with. Better than the stranger she’d been speaking to before.
So... idk what I’m even trying to say. Probably just that Kuvira is a very interesting and challenging character and that I spent a lot of time conflicted and thinking about how to portray her and how complicated she made Korra’s situation.
And then I found this gif.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT ABT THE BSD MANGA ILY THANK YOU I FEEL LIKE MY OPINION IS FINALLY VALIDATED WHICH IS: BSD has turned meh. I have become indifferent towards the plot due to the fact there are no real stakes - I feel like the OP characters like Dazai will always have a solution with a deus ex machina feel to it, making it impossible for me to care. With the recent chaos happening in the manga (I too gave up on the manga a year or so ago!), I was baffled to find out I could no longer enjoy it. My memory is poor, and I can't really pinpoint it at the moment, but BSD just... doesn't engage me as it used to. Keep in mind I was an obsessive fan of it and analyzed it to the tiniest details, but all of my great love for the series has long died, sadly. But! I am glad to hear you feel similarly about it because, yes, the potential was there, but it got terribly wasted.
Bruh don't I feel it, me and @autumn-foxfire have like monthly bitch sessions about the state of bsd at this point. I was also super invested in it in initial arcs (Up until the guild arc ended) and then slowly started petering off only to drop it the first time around the hunting dogs introduction. Then after some time i was like okay ill go give it a second shot, came to the vampire arc went 'wow this is really fuckin stupid' and dropped it again. Idk will I pick it up again, maybe I'll just stick to being an anime only, even tho I also have problems with some adaptation things but that's BESIDES THE POINT.
Please click under for The Point
The thing about Kafka is: He's really good at coming up with interesting concepts and ideas and REALLY BAD at executing them in any sort of satisfying way. Like, when I say I only like bsd until the end of the guild arc, I don't mean it was perfect. It could have handled it's female cast better, it would have been fun to see more mafia and agency team ups besides soukoku and shin soukoku, I still don't get why shin soukoku is supposed to be a replacement in training since Dazai and Chuuya still work together perfectly and even if they hate each other they hate each other less than Akutagawa and Atsushi AND have way more experience fighting together but that once again is besides the point. The point being those arcs of bsd were SATISFYING. We got introduced to two organizations, seen them butt heads and then have them forced to work together against a common enemy. It's very simple but it's effective and it's satisfying.
And then the rats struck.
While up until then bsd wasn't perfect it was fun and had lovable characters and an interesting plot and engaging dynamics. Rats arc wasn't horrible per say, the idea of the cannibalization was really fun (Though I think Kafka should have used it to get rid of Mori, nobody fuckin likes Mori) but this is where we slowly get introduced to what I think are two main failings of Kafka's writing: That he's unable to handle characters properly and that he likes writing smart things but doesn't know how to write smart things.
Kafka has a very, very bad habit of INTRODUCING TOO MANY FUCKING CHARCTERS. Every arc is a new massive group with like a bunch of members, one of who may actually end up being fleshed out before they are inventiblely replaced by another large group or maybe two why the fuck not. The mafia and the guild left lasting impressions on me and I can still name all the main members but fuck me if i know a single rat aside from Fyodor (AND ILL GET TO FYODOR). Kafka feels like someone who's idea of rising conflict is 'introduce a bigger enemy each time' and it's just so annoying. Chapters and arcs end up centering around these groups of new characters while old characters, who we loved the manga for, just fall into obscurity. He almost had me in the hunting dogs arc by giving Yosano a backstory. I was so excited! I was like!!! finally development for the agency!!! But that barely went anywhere did it. I've talked about this with Foxy but it really feels like Kafka is just BORED of the og characters and is trying to silently sideline them for his new shiny characters. When's the last time we saw Chuuya again, you know, the ex partner of one of the series protagonists? The next predicted mafia head? Is he important? Foxy tells me Dazai's been sidelined too, fUCKIN DAZAI, for a good while I was sure Kafka liked Dazai a lot better than Atsuhi for protagonist and now he's getting sidelined. I know bsd is still really popular in japan but at this point i think it would have been more merciful for Kafka to just end bsd and start a new manga with new characters instead of doing whatever weird metamorphosis this is turning out to be.
Introducing new characters isn't a bad thing of course, but bsd has become mcdonalds of new characters. They are cheap and disposable. I can't feel anything for them because I know nine times out of ten they'll barely make any impact and they'll disappear as soon as the new group slides in. When adding new characters you should do so while knowing what role those characters will play in your plot, what will they bring. If a character is just there to waffle around until they get shoved away they should probably be cut because they are wasting time and space. AND YOU SHOULDN'T SIDE LINE YOUR CORE CAST FOR UR SHINY NEW CHARACTERS YOU'LL GET BORED OF IN COUPLE OF ARCS ANYWAY, ARE YOU A TODDLER???
I still think that bsd could have been SO much better if instead of focusing on the next big evil group they just focused on shifting tension between the agency and the mafia. I mean they've had to team up for the guild and then they immediately got thrown into the cannibalization. It would have been interesting to see them pull against and pull towards those ties made during the guild arc when they are forcefully pitted against each other again (and decide that killing mori would be in everyone's best interest). Instead we got, idk I already forgot what the rats arc ended up being about, atsushi and aku team up again yadda yadda yadda, Chuuya gets done dirty and never recovers, Fyodor ruins Dazai
SO ABOUT FYODOR. As I said, Kafka strikes me as someone who REALLY likes to write geniuses and who wants people to think he's super smart but also has no idea how to show his work. At first this was okay. We had Dazai and Ranpo who were very good at pushing the plot along and sometimes you'd get explained how they got to that conclusion and sometimes you didn't but it usually wasn't a big deal. But then the writing became more and more and more of 'well he's smart so he figured it out so just trust me' without actually explaining anything and as you said, it ended up feeling boring, unengaging and very deus ex machina. You know what Kafka's writing reminds me off? That video about how Sherlock is so happy to stroke itself to how smart they look while never showing their work, you know the one. Kafka likes writing smart characters but doesn't actually know how to write smart characters so instead of giving us reasons and clues and explanations to how they come to some conclusion, how they predicted or planned or whatever, he just goes 'oh well they are super smart so they figured it out'. I don't think I need to explained why this is bad, annoying and unengaging writing. This is why i say Fyodor ruined Dazai for me, Dazai was fine as a genius but then they had to pit him against Fyodor who's another genius and things just got ridiculous. You know how in that sherlock video the guy points out the one scene that encapsulates every irritating thing about sherlocks writing. This had been it for me and BSD (thank you Foxy for helping me find the panels)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THATS NOT HOW CODES WORK, THATS NOT HOW ANYTHING WORKS, THEY WOULD JUST BE COMING UP WITH TWO DIFFERENT SETS OF CODES HERE. Even if they were both smart enough to remember every conversation in detail, how on earth are they supposed to 'guess out' what the other means. How are they supposed to confirm or deny that's what a certain word means in a way that can be understood, how can they even guess what the word the other guessed is IF THEY ARE BOTH TALKING IN CODE. KAFKA'S ANSWER: THEY'RE MONSTERS, THEY ARE JUST THAT SMART, NO NEED TO EXPLAIN IT BECAUSE THEY ARE JUST THAT SMART AND THAT'S YOUR SOLUTION AND THAT'S BULLSHIT. This scene broke bsd in half for me and honestly made me dislike Dazai for a long time (I got better), but it honestly shows so well how Kafka wanted to make his characters so smart he actually made his manga really fuckin stupid, ruining very good and interesting concept he had started with.
In the end, Kafka writes how I wrote when I was 15. With no idea where the plot is headed, adding new characters and situations whenever it strikes his fancy whether they work for the story or not, ending up just flopping around plot holes and fizzled out character arcs and boring ass writing. And that's fine for a 15yr old writing fanfiction. It's not fine for a presumably grown ass published author of a relatively popular manga.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

hyperfixation ask: ✨💞
You didn't specify but I'm gonna assume you wanna hear about P4 so here goes lmao
✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?
Uhhghh... I honestly don't know? God that sounds bad, I mean I haven't really... rationalized it yet? Obviously the characters and their relationships are top notch. And the whole idea of a shadow is fascinating, the way P4 goes about it. But unlike with eg Boueibu, I can't name a clear single aspect that draws me to it;;
💕 Tell us about one of your favorite characters and why you like them!
For the love of God I can't talk about Yosuke. Is this the time to struggle through the incredibly specific chain of events and emotions that lead to my weird relationship to Adachi in literary form? Yeah I guess it is. Warning for major Persona 4 spoilers.
So first of all you gotta know that 1. I'm a terrible judge of character, 2. I tend to think everyone is good until proven otherwise and desperately believe in the goodness of people, and 3. I have the capacity to forgive too easily and in wrong situations. I know this starts out terribly.
But like... I liked Adachi from the beginning. He seemed kinda pitiful and incompetent, but sympathetic. I can see the pessimism and indifference that was always there in retrospect, but referring back to point 1, I couldn’t the first time around. On surface, he was the softer and friendlier counterpart to Dojima's tough and untrusting attitude. A pleasant guy, fun to be around. Terrible at thinking his words through before speaking though, and constantly chastised for it, I felt bad for him. And I couldn't completely drop the feeling after being spoiled way too early on (shame on me for not staying away from fanfics). I tried to tell myself that I shouldn't trust him or think too highly of the guy I knew to be the murderer I was after, but... Referring back to points 2 and 3, the positive first impression was too strong and I couldn't just discard it at the drop of a hat.
But the Investigation Team could. And it baffled me. Big time. The way I understood it (I may be wrong), they had also more or less liked or trusted Adachi. Then they figured out he was behind everything, and all sympathy and attachment was out the window immediately. And I guess it made perfect sense and was even the right thing to do, but idk. It left a bad taste in my mouth. I wasn't able to let go that quickly.
I grinded through Adachi's dungeon and the True Ending right before leaving for the winter break and pondered Adachi on the bus on my way to my parents' place. And primarily... I was sad. I know it's weird, but I was just so very SAD over it all. Not the obvious things; I didn't feel betrayed by Adachi because I already knew, I obviously wasn't displeased that he got apprehended, I can't say I sympathized with his motivations much. But the fact that the IT jumped straight into the "he's an unforgivable killer" mindset from the "he's kinda pathetic but harmless" mindset SO EASILY... So seamlessly, so effortlessly, like they'd never had anything personal to do with him at all? Couldn't be me, good for them.
I already thought that Yosuke has a lot in common with Adachi. Boredom, wish to be Something, feeling of being under- or unappreciated, mistreatment, all of this leading to resentment. Yosuke could, and I believe WOULD, have turned out like Adachi if he hadn't gotten that support network and positive human connections when he did. Then I watched a video essay on Adachi and it dawned on me that huh, it does go both ways. It's a cliche but love and friendship ARE the strongest might in the world. It's something Adachi never really had, and combined with some of his pre-existing ideals and experiences it lead to where it did... So ok, now I felt bad for Adachi again :/ I hope nobody cancels me for murder apologism or something.
And ok. Now we've established I have an emotional investment in Adachi and whatever went down with or surrounding him. An emotion is an emotion, whichever emotion it is, and... That's all it takes for a character to make an impression. So that happened. I can't honestly say I like Adachi as a person and I'm not even sure if I like him as a character. But he is fascinating, and I did go through some strange mental hoops to get where I am today, wherever that is, and the only way I know how to deal with it is to go "hurr durr adachi second favorite".

I was going to squee about my space-cat but I just got shotgunned through the Chains of Harrow quest & subsequent orbiter thing so instead I’m going to spew my thoughts everywhere. I have too many emotions about this ok. WARNING: Massive story spoilers (for many quest lines), massive gameplay spoilers, massive worldbuilding spoilers, BASICALLY NOTHING BUT SPOILERS UP IN HERE. You probably don’t want to read this unless 1. you’re caught up on everything including 2. you dgaf and find me nattering about a game you don’t play interesting. (~2200 words.)
I. Gameplay/Mechanics
Chains of Harrow is VERY WELL DONE, jfc. I continue to be impressed by Warframe’s execution. Some previous quests weren’t quite ideal but this one... this one was on point.
(Shout-out to my game dev friend who does totally unrelated stuff and their ANGUISHED GROAN when I asked how they’d do the one bit with moving the audio around in their not-Warframe engine; they stared into Hell as they contemplated it. “But Unreal engine apparently lets you do it just fine.” It’s so fun to be reminded that one engine’s effortless task is another engine’s “the only thing that eclipses the suffering this would require is your hubris”.)
There were spoopy screen effects, not that I’m surprised– already seen plenty of demonstrations of what they can do when I get flashbanged or fade in/out of a menu. One section has you chasing directional audio aka heading towards wherever the sound is coming from. (This was the worst section for me, I had to pause three times to get my panic wrangled.) The talking-heads approach to story, combined with the setting, combined with a few lite-cutscenes & one interactive segment... was actually fucking perfect. I usually feel like the exposition-dumps are somewhat contrived and aggravating, but here I was SOLD.
If I had any criticism, it’d be that the spoopy starts wearing off like 1/3 of the way in and just keeps eroding until the end isn’t spoopy at all. It didn’t feel like a deliberate tone-shift, just that they ran out of jumpscare (which is what the spoopy is 100% made of) and didn’t really replace it with anything. I don’t consider it a drawback though... if it had actually been scary the whole way through I’d be a gibbering jelly. Also everything else going on is so fantastic that I prefer the lack of distraction.
I did laugh when the main combat section goes Ghostbusters: you have to trap a spoopy in a box you toss on the floor, complete with a glowy beam trapping said spoopy. Mild grumble because I wasted a dozen traps before I googled wtf to do in that section (hint: APPLY BULLETS TO BAD THING) but fine, if I hadn’t been accidentally lied to I would probably have tried that first instead of faffing around.
Final “boss” fight was indeed kind of a bear but I was warned beforehand that I was gonna get punched out like forty times so when I only got punched out thrice it was like all my namedays had come at once! HOLY FUCK DON’T DO IT BEFORE YOU’VE DONE THE GARA QUEST THO & GOTTEN AN OPERATOR AMP ON CETUS. This quest predates all that BUT THE AMP IS GOOD. EVEN A BAD AMP IS BETTER THAN NO AMP. So... hot tip, get your little shit a little piece of shit and be thrilled when you can actually kill the boss fight adds in under 12 hours.
Ok no I have one true criticism: BLOOD ISN’T RED WAX, WHY WERE THE BLOODY MESSAGES ON THE WALL THAT COLOR. Actually they were... really 3D... ... ...maybe it WAS wax? Where the fuck did the spooperson get so much red wax for writing creepy messages?
II. Story
So the story is that you get a haunted I mean hecked up transmission, it’s spooky; you go to a fucked-up empty ship and find one Red Veil chick just hanging out with her cat. She says a lot of baffling things and then forty ex-Red-Veil zombies/ghosts/possessed assholes try to murder you, ineptly. Ok maybe they’re less inept if they’re not going in ultra-slow-motion. (My god, I will never stop being happy that Frost Prime was my first frame. So good and useful when I’m going into shit blind.)
You haul RVC (Red Veil Chick) out of there and plunk her ass down in the Steel Meridian camp because I guess the factions like each other enough for casual favors like that. She says some more barely-less-confusing shit and very earnestly (there’d be dewey eyes and heaving bosoms if she wasn’t wearing a full-body-inculding-head suit) begs you to go find some relic. Off you go to another fucked-up empty ship! UNNECESSARILY CREEPY WHISPERS lead you to said relic, which was the thing Rell focused on for soothing because most sensory stimulation was too much for him. Wait, what? And then ASSHOLE MCINVINCIBLE tries to stick his hand up your ass like a puppet and if you’re me you sprint in circles for 30 seconds crying while the NPC frantically tries to get you out.
You go back to RVC and she does a seance. It works. To summarize/paraphrase including story bits revealed further into the quest line, Rell was one of the Tenno who got shunned out of the gaggle even before they all got Tenno’d. Apparently this put him in a position to discover what the fuck is in the Void, at which point he had his meatsack body killed so his mind(/soul/whatever) could be chained to his specific ‘frame, leaving him awake/conscious to keep doorstoppering the badbadnotgood, even while the other Tenno were off snoozing per the Lotus’ plans. A line of RVCs (Red Veil Chicks) were in on this and dedicated themselves to... looking after him, inasmuch as you can look after someone who shoveled themself into a robot that’s been chained up somewhere it’ll never see the light of day. They could talk to him anyways– I guess they were mostly there to keep him from going bonkers and maybe intervene if anything ever went wrong.
Anyways, that’s all fine right up until it isn’t; RVC & the Lotus determine that his transference fucked up and fragmented so you need to go Ghostbusters the creepy phantoms of this guy’s psyche. Collect them all while dodging ASSHOLE MCINVINCIBLE (and a smattering of forgettable mooks– fuck off Infested, I don’t care if it’s your ship) and RVC thanks you/tearfully asks you to take them back to where his ‘frame rests so he can die because THAT’S ENOUGH SUFFERING FOR ONE PERSON THANKS.
Nothing gets to be easy, not even that, so when you find the ‘frame and start snapping its chains it wakes up. RVC has about five seconds to go “thaT’S NOT RELL” while your little shit self scurries behind a pillar before boss fight! Red Veil operatives (except dead or mind controlled or who knows what) try to punch you out while some kind of awful red glowing tear pops in and out to fireball you. But eventually you snap all the chains and yaaaay Rell gets his eternal rest. (I’m not crying, you’re crying.)
III. Meta Story/Worldbuilding
It’s SUCH A THING to me that RVC casually knows what the Tenno are. I mean, ok, makes sense because the RVCs were so involved with Rell, buT LIKE. MAN. NOBODY ELSE KNOWS. THE “KIND OF HAVE A CLUE” PEOPLE STILL DON’T KNOW MORE THAN “IF YOU DISSECT A WARFRAME YOU WILL NOT FIND ANYTHING THAT EXPLAINS WHAT THE TENNO ARE”. Fuck, I think the RVC even dresses down the Lotus over it a la “fuck u, u say they’re ur kids but u suck and u never knew about Rell”.
They completely skate right past RVC setting up shop in the hyper-secret Steel Meridian HQ. “Yeah, no big, me and my ouija board are gonna hang out at the secret base of a completely different faction, which happens to be located like three centimeters from the balls of the genocidal maniacs they defected from. ...ok, side thoughts out of the way: OH FUCK OH FUCKOHFUCKOHFUCK THE MAN IN THE WALL
As of this point in Warframe’s existence (out of game I mean) they have done... not the WORST job defining the Void, but of course a lot of it hasn’t been written out. (Both because good storytelling and also because the writers probably haven’t gotten that far. :p) Things we do know:
The ship of people who got stuck in there was (afaik) 100% casualties among all the adults. Fuckers all went feral apparently? But the kids lived. Although they came out weird and dangerous (understatement). People do still go into the Void atm, generally via opening a portal on another planet. People... don’t always come OUT of the Void, although presumably they come back out often enough for the major powers to feel like it’s not a waste of time to ransack that shit. I don’t know where they stuck this lore but iirc there’s some kind of horrible THING in there that basically shoves some kind of hijacking device into you, if it catches you, and then it controls you forever. (IDK if dying gets you out of it or if it can just be like HA HA NICE TRY MEATPUPPET and get you back up. With how this setting is, could go either way.) This is why all the Void tilesets have a variety of mob types: the THING has been hijacking the assortment of factions that wander in. Like I said, people don’t always come back out during those expeditions.
So the first badbadnotgood hint I personally played through was at the end of The War Within (Space Lil’ Shit 2 Electric Boogaloo, Now With More Tremors). It’s blink-and-you’ll-miss-it brief, but while Space Dad is congratulating you, your Operator suddenly stares into the camera, eyes turning into voids, and a creepy voice taunts you, something about “don’t forget what you owe me kid” or the like. It’s a single line, but the way the camera snaps around (complete with some fucking over-the-top visual effects) & Space Dad catches your arm while you shake it off... thaaaaaat’s not a trivial hallucination.
Anyway. Among other things, during the Chains of Harrow the RVC is very fucking explicit about how Rell was grappling with/cockblocking a specific “vast and indifferent” entity that lives in the Void. Offhandedly, The Lotus dismisses this while mentioning that basically all Tenno have mentioned or claimed similar things. (RVC keeps on insisting.) Right before Rell finally dies, he asks who’s gonna take over his job if he stops, and the RVC coos that all the other Tenno will have to help now.
I have been told by one friend– without checking around, so could be wrong, but– that once you’ve finished the Chains of Harrow you’ll periodically get jumpscared on your ship by a creepy asshole who looks identical to your Operator, but has a different (asshole) voice. Said friend randomly turned around once and what looked like their Operator was sitting on their nav console. And taunted them. Said friend sprinted down to the transference pod to make sure their Operator was in the right place– they were– but was pretty freaked out by it.
Obviously, we don’t have much more detail at this point, but uH. This is not painting a rosy picture of the shit lurking out there in the Void. To me this is pointing towards some kind of extradimensional horror that you really don’t want to draw the attention of... and we’ve gone and done that. Possibly even that the Tenno were lucky to scamper away the first time after it got to play with an entire ship of people (some guessing there, but given its asshole moves so far...) and going anywhere near the Void after that was about as wise as standing on a hilltop in a thunderstorm while double-dog-daring Zeus.
I’m so excited to find out how fucked we are.
Given what the orbiter shit involved, the answer is probably very, and also creatively. BALLAS? WHAT?? WHAT?????
IV. Further Thoughts
I really would love to hear the perspectives of autistic folk. That said, I... more or less liked how the Chains of Harrow handled Rell? The quest established that he was very different; the other kids-eventually-Tenno ignored him, while his mother loved him (I’m open to other interpretations but everything I heard pointed to sincerity). He had the intelligence and agency to deal with badbadnotgood, and while the RVC had a certain maternal vibe she was pretty damn reverent when discussing what he’d done/was doing. Also (maybe most importantly in my reckoning) he didn’t get a happy ending, but he succeeded at what he was doing. By this setting’s standards that’s a rosier conclusion than almost anyone else gets.
Now that I’m thinking of it, I’m racking my brains for any parties that have known the truth of the Tenno and been kindly disposed towards them without getting all maternal/paternal. I’m coming up blank. (The fuck is with this setting and everyone treating them like kids btw? All indications are that they stopped aging so they look like young teens, sure, but all indications are ALSO that they’ve lived awhile time, even excluding their cryosleep! I’m willing to believe a certain amount of “their brain maturity stalled along with the rest of their aging so they have the hardware of a 13yo” but that wouldn’t undo living long enough to form a small civilization. SOME parts of teenagers not being like adults are hardware, but a lot of it is pure lack of life experience, which the Tenno have in spades by now. Also, you know, THEY PSYCHICALLY POWER SPACE NINJA ROBOTS, SHOW SOME RESPECT.)
...
And now I’m going to pass out to sweet dreams of tomorrow’s fully-grown space-kitty.
