so. been thinking a lot about pre-uniform naval years and how the noun is also an adjective and what that means vs the motley crew. how england’s maritime power was intertwined with piracy for much of its early years but turns her back sharply on the privateering system just prior to when navy uniforms are first introduced.
#honestly from a purely logistical and basic 'audience knowing what's going on' standpoint the navy can't *not* have uniforms in potc#(even tho not having them would make them very similar to the pirates including during acts of violence which is of course the point)#but james norrington is so interesting because he's coming of age right during this transition. *right* when governors are not supposed to#be personally partnering with pirates anymore and now have the authority to hang at a distance from england#(you can assume that's why governor swann was installed in the first place. clearing out the corrupt PR governor and replacing with new.#with a bright promising honorable navy lieutenant to enforce the new justice)#and he's swallowed all this rhetoric open-mouthed. because before the crossing one can assume he heard plenty of complaints about corrupt#officials making deals with pirates to serve themselves and costing the london investors money when the ships go down.#but its still very new and none of it is *really* cemented yet. which makes it so fun that the back part of his arc is this faith dissolving#+ becoming self-serving.#not even back part of the arc it's already dissolved by the time he says he can afford jack one day's head start. something that makes no#sense if you regard pirates as beasts not worthy of the graces of 'civilized' enemies.#AND THEN he chooses capital ...  just like England ... over pirates ...#✘; I HAVE SEVENTY TWO EXAMS AND I HAVE NOT STUDIED FOR ONE ( ooc )#this has no sense of coherency but idc i think it's something so im gonna post it anyway

another day thinking about how james was not out to restore his old life, he wanted a full pardon from the noose and the shield of the law to protect his actions (as, essentially, a pirate –– just with a government sponsorship). he was willing to do ANYTHING to get that. getting back into his former place society was not the goal (i imagine he didn't see that as remotely possible); he wanted to be able return to society, and the places he knew and called home, and to the law, and to a hierarchy he understood, but what beckett offered was never in his wildest dreams.

wrote a fanfic for for @cupcakeshakesnake 's au. it's an AU in which most of the characters are children playing an elaborate roleplaying game, and the rest are the adults in their lives. Norrington and his lieutenants are teachers, and norrington in particular tends to work at various temp jobs during school break to the shock and amazement of his students. swann is the mayor, beckett is the local branch leader of a shipping or fishing conglomerate, davy jones is, inexplicably, still a cursed squid man.

I just read your James Norrington post. I really liked it, I've been looking for stuff on him. If it's not to repetitive may I please request more romantic Yandere James Norrington with a pirate reader (she's part of Jack's crew), at all his character ark stages. Like commodore, reluctant pirate, regaining his status through betrayal, and finally his redemption (au where he lives). Thank you.
Sure thing--I'm not tired of writing for him. He is my favorite character of the whole franchise, but I get the feeling that the producers did not want us to care about him much. I'm also disappointed that there's little content on him. :(
obsession, spoilers
Yandere James Norrington with a Pirate
Tumblr media
Commodore
For obvious reasons, the commodore doesn't think too highly of you initially
He is an idealistic man--fighting for justice, or at least what he deems to be so--and you self-serving pirates represent the antithesis of what he stands for
He worked hard for his position up to lieutenancy, and then his role as a commodore, while you and your kind steal and thieve your way to success
Although Norrington never was able to catch Jack Sparrow, the same cannot be said about individuals of his crew...
Perhaps in his pursuit to save Elizabeth, and his various scuffles with pirates in the process, he manages to imprison you
While you're stuck, imprisoned on the brig, he might as well see if you can be of use and provide him some information about Sparrow
What he doesn't expect, however, is to find you so attractive, especially for a pirate, disheveled and dirty, sitting on the filthy floors of the brig
And once he gets to talking with you, he finds that you have more in common than he would have thought
Despite being a pirate, you have some personal code of honour and sense of loyalty
This is when Norrington's obsession first culminates
He held some physical level attraction to you since he saw you, but now he feels that, after knowing you better, he can rehabilitate you and help you find the err in your piracy
During this phase of his character ark, his intense affection manifests through a saviour complex
He does not want you to hang, as would be his normal policy towards pirates, because he believes you can be saved
(And his stomach lurches at the thought of you dead)
Before he can actually manifest his plans, however, you slip away, unbeknownst to him
After dealing with Barbarossa's undead crew, a strange longing to see you and talk with you
Only, when he checks, your cell, after the whole ordeal, you aren't there
And all the while you're gone, his resentment of the captain Jack Sparrow grows for taking you away
Piracy
Tumblr media
Disgraced and burned by his destroyed ship in pursuing Sparrow, he goes into hiding
While his interest in you before, as a commodore, was certainly unusual and intense, now, stuck in the echoes of his own mind, his fixation spirals
The copious amounts of alcohol surely doesn't help either
It is in his desperate enlisting to the Black Pearl that he finds you again--no longer so disheveled as during your imprisonment
Even after so long from your escape, he can't help the jolt in his heart from seeing you again
The fallen commodore's fixation is no longer along that lines that he can rehabilitate you--how can he when he can't even help himself?
Now, he is more honest with himself that he desires you, he wants to be with you, and after losing all his titles, there's no reason he can't now
In this stage of his character, it’s likely that he will be forthright in his intention—flirting with you outright
He is no longer a commodore, and the stoic, strong front he portrays from his experience in the navy is no longer necessary
He dreams of restoring his lost honor, and when he does, you best believe that he will take you with him
And a lucky break comes for him through the heart of Davy Jones
Admiral
This is where he’s most dangerous
Restored to his previous honour, and promoted to admiral, you are helpless to the power he has
And Lord Beckett surely wouldn't mind if he takes one measly pirate for himself
But all the while, he thinks about you...you're clearly not cut for piracy, and likely forced into it
He will take you away from the cruel and unbefitting world of piracy
And once he learns that the man he trusted and dedicated his services to betrayed his trust, his determination to sweep you away blooms tenfold
Lord Beckett had killed Governor Swan, someone Norrington trusted and admired
The incident is enough to send his obsession over the edge
After releasing the prisoners from the brig, he severs the ties between the Empress and the Dutchman
You come with him on a separate dinghy
And if you resist, confused by his actions and your sudden kidnap, he will point his pistol at you, telling you to comply with him for your own good
Norrington doesn't intend to shoot you, no matter what, but it is more to calm your struggles and your confusion
He insists this is for your "own good", but the single-minded and determined look across his face makes you worry if he might be more of a threat to you
Redemption
Tumblr media
James Norrington wouldn't marry you--at least in an official manner
You have to remember that marriage serves as a business transaction, not solely for the spirit of love, or at least in this time
He would certainly take care of you as a spouse, just that there's no official records of such
Besides, he wants to hide you from the cruelty of the world as much as possible, and a marriage with you would just herald your existence to the world...to the evil who might wish you harm...
Undoubtedly his betrayal to Lord Beckett would hurt his professional prospects, but perhaps with time, he can regain a position of some valour
His dedication to service and honest work speak for him as much as his accomplishments
And if he ever regains a position of power again, your chances at escape are even slimmer
He is not paranoid, but he would feel at more ease to take certain...precautions...to prevent you from harm...or escape
He will be very dedicated to you, though he isn't particularly adept in expressing the earnest love he feels for you
But, if you ever manage to escape from his grasp...
Then you would truly see the depth of his obsession

I realised that one minor change could've really easily had CTW being a Groves/Theo fic, so I wrote a little scene that sums up that premise. I won't be beginning this one until Fallen Through Time is done, because otherwise things can get muddled and oversaturated really fckn quickly, but this is a good glimpse into where the story goes, as I have it planned now.
(The first few bits are lifted directly from Catch the Wind, so veterans from that fic will recognise a lot of this.)
The gangplank was lowered to the dock to allow for disembarking, but Theo paid no attention to the men doing it. All she could do was stare at the docks - at the passing men and women, all in elaborate historical dress. Not a car, phone, nor anything even slightly modern in sight. She couldn't even be pleased that, true to her earlier assessment, she now knew exactly how fucked she was - because that amount was astronomical. Not only uncountable to humans and mortals alike, but inconceivable, like trying to wrap one's mind around the size of the universe itself.
"Are you well, Miss? You've gone white as a sheet," one of the men fixed her with a concerned frown.
"I…" her voice came out high and reedy "I - I'm just nervous. About crossing paths with the pirates. Captain Norrington told me they would be the first order of business."
"We keep a stern eye on them, don't you worry about that, but it would still be best if you heeded the captain and kept well away," the man nodded solemnly.
Any feeling in her extremities was long gone - even the infuriating burning itch that had set in about the sun burn. Squeezing her hand into a fist until her knuckles must have started to turn white, she couldn't feel a damn thing, there was no pain to drown out the static slowly filling her head, just the slightest sensation of pressure where her nails dug into her palm.
"Right," she said numbly "I'll do that."
Until the one pirate who might just be mad enough to believe her story, and might actually be able to help her, came to Port Royal. Part of her feared the man would insist on escorting her back to the captain's quarters, but thankfully he seemed too frazzled with the amount to be done and departed almost immediately after. She had to act now, before she was sent indoors - before anybody paid any real attention to what she was doing.
After one more glance around to make sure everybody was well and truly too busy to pay her any mind at all, she strode towards the gangplank. But she only made it a handful of steps before Lieutenant Groves was stepping before her.
“Miss Byrne, are you well?”
If there was any real suspicion within him, it was masked by genuine concern, too, as he watched her carefully. Theo felt too dizzy to appreciate it, though, and mainly wished everybody would stop asking her that question. The more they did so, the worse she felt.
“Yeah. I mean, yes. I’m fine,” she breathed, sounding very much not fine. “Just…eager to stand on solid ground again.”
Her words, at least the first few, seemed to garner all of the belief they deserved – which was absolutely none. But he was kind enough not to comment on it.
“I’ve come to see if I might walk you to the church,” he said.
“I thought I had to wait until the pirates were brought out.”
“A lot of procedure goes into transport such as this, there’s a moment or two yet, and my duties do not include participating in said procedures. I’m free to escort you.”
“So your duties include escorting mad Irishwomen to churches?”
At that, he chuckled.
"Those would be my chivalrous duties, I'm afraid. Not quite in the job description, but I take them seriously all the same.”
It was difficult to be annoyed at someone trying to do a good, helpful thing, but she still wished he hadn't approached, all the same. With every second that trickled by, her chance at making a successful exit without anybody noticing grew smaller and smaller - already, she realised with a sinking feeling, it had passed entirely.

What's Hornblower + what's it about? It looks interesting
Tumblr media
Special interest mentioned ong!
Ok! So Hornblower is a miniseries and book series about the British navy from the French Revolution through the Napoleonic Wars (miniseries is only to the middle of the Napoleonic Wars) following the fictional character Horatio Hornblower! :33333 The original series is by C.S. Foster and is 11 books long! This time period is one that I'm not super into but these series is soooo good. I've always had a little interest in naval history so I find it very fun!
All the characters are very likable and there is never a dull moment. I can't exactly put my finger on why, but it is a bit like TURN but on the high seas and the characters are more likable. It is also a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean but no magic and no cringe (hooray!), the series is good all the way through! If you like James Norrington from PotC then you will like Hornblower. However, a lot of characters die which is sad, don't get attached. There are a lot of jokes making fun of France which is kinda silly.
I never have seriously kinned a character until now: The protagonist Horatio Hornblower is spectacular. He is a little silly guy little blorbo. He gets into shenanigans (war). The shenanigans seriously make me giggle sometimes. OH OH and he is good at playing the card game whist. :) and he's a little autistic (and we love that), every jokes goes over his head...autism creature incarnate!
I'm not integrated into the fandom quite yet but there is a little one here on Tumblr! I have some posted with the Hornblower tag, at least. Here is a link to the series on Internet Archive is anyone is interested in watching it! :)
This ask made my day thank you. Woah this post is kinda long.

destiny bound
The day has come: Port Royal lies on the horizon. Therein lies the end of Governor Swann's journey from England and rest of his and Elizabeth's lives. A moment so monumental arrives with requisite reflection. ✦ written for @20yrsofpirateszine! 2k words, pre-canon
A journey on the sea changes a man. For instance, Weatherby Swann’s idea of a day well spent would have once entailed being cooped up in a parlor, playing cards and chatting the time away. Now, he has learned not to take the enjoyment of sensations as trivial as fresh air and sunshine for granted.
Foggy London was often bereft of both things, but foul weather came and went — and if it did not, Swann at least had the option of escaping to the country. After a month aboard the HMS Dauntless, he has traded those foggy London strolls for paces about the sun-soaked deck, stern to bow, bow to stern, as he wills away the hours until he can return to land.
They are making the grand journey from England to Swann’s new post as governor in Port Royal, across the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. Her warm waters surround them on all sides beyond the sturdy hold of the Dauntless, serving as both their escort and their jailer. Young Lieutenant Norrington, with a proud gleam in his eyes, insists at every opportunity that the great warship is the safest way to travel to the parish.
Yet the journey has been hard. The crew of the ship is constantly up and about, and the ceaseless noise is harsh on Swann’s delicate nerves; the hold reeks of unwashed bodies, human and livestock alike; and though the cabin he shares with Elizabeth is surprisingly comfortable, it cannot protect his constitution from the constant rocking of the ship.
And there was, of course, the shipwreck.

[FIC] a swann missing
Summary:
The pirates have withdrawn from Port Royal, taking Elizabeth Swann with them. Commodore Norrington takes it upon himself to inform the governor of the situation.
Word Count: 2,206
read on ao3 (written for @20yrsofpirateszine)
Excerpt:
The newly promoted Commodore Norrington looks out at the destruction from the entrance to the fort. It’s terrible from above, seeing the extent of it all in the moonlight, but there’s something equally as terrible about being on the ground. Hearing the crackling of the flames, the occasional groan from someone injured. It is a far cry from the sounds earlier this same day: the drums and fifes that announced his arrival, the quiet as Governor Swann gave him his sword, the pleasant music while the guests milled about.
As to be expected, the parts of town closest to the harbor took the most damage—from cannonfire, at any rate. He’s sure the pirates on foot did much the same with cutlasses and pistols, but he hasn’t walked the streets yet. At least by some small miracle the ships don’t appear to have come to much harm.
James had expected his first battle as commodore to come at sea, or some isolated island where he’d cornered pirates. But not Port Royal. Not for his first, and perhaps not ever.
Whether because of the message hanging in the entrance to the harbor or by word of mouth, pirates have not so much as been sighted from Port Royal in months. And now, in one day, he's arrested one and seen a ship full of others fire upon the town. It cannot be a coincidence.
Checking on Sparrow will have to be one item on the lengthy to-do list. It’s impossible that the pirates came specifically for him, seeing how he’s only just been captured, but that doesn’t mean they hadn’t come across him during their raid and freed him.
That can wait, though. Either the man is gone, or he’s still secure in his cell. There are more pressing matters to take care of first, like—
“Commodore!”
James turns. Gillette is there, looking serious. It’s the face of a man who has difficult news to deliver, though there are too many fires around them—literal and metaphorical—for James to even bother to guess what the lieutenant is about to say.
“I’ve just spoken with the marine you sent to the governor’s mansion.”

Sparrinton Part 2
I need to establish a couple of things. Manly Norrington´s ships and which one he used for pirate hunting.
While the Dauntless is an impressive ship that probably would blow any pirate ship to pieces, it is important to note that she is a warship. The real live inspiration for the Dauntless is the HMS Victory, an enormous 104-gun first-rate ship that could hold 800 men abord. And even thou she is fast and easy to manoeuvre for its size, she wouldn’t have been able to keep up with a pirate ship.
The Dauntless probably would have the same issue but I don’t think James used the Dauntless to hunt pirates and earn his moniker. What is more likely is that he was the captain of the Interceptor and used her to hunt. She would have been perfect for the job. Fast, easy to manoeuvre and it required far less men to operate. My headcanon is that James was given the Interceptor as a captain and was given the Dauntless for his promotion to commodore. Like we saw in the movie he was station as a lieutenant at the Dauntless but she was probably commanded by an admiral until his promotion to commodore.
(If this is specified in the books… I don’t care, I never read them, I probably never will and I do what I want)
Act 2
James now has one year to prove his worth to the navy and all he has is a warship which is to heavy and slow to catch any pirate worth his salt. He needs a plan and he needs one soon. He can´t chase pirates with the Dauntless, but he also doesn´t have intel to set up a trap.
James stays for a couple of weeks in Port Royal to help repair the damages done by the attack of the Black Pearl. He throws himself completely into his work, so that he is too exhausted to think about his empty house. It worries his two lieutenants.
One day when James is at the marketplace (hidden so nobody notices him) and observes the happy bustling in the streets (it fills his bleeding heart with happiness, this is why he joined the navy, to protect these people from the cruel hands of greedy, ruthless men) does he notice an od figure. They look like any common sailor that wander through the crowd unnoticed. But something nags at James, they seem oddly familiar. The figure turns his head slightly and James is struck speechless. That seemingly unremarkable man is Captain Jack Sparrow himself, unnoticed by anybody. Norrington has to marvel at the genius of it. Jack is a man that turns heads, his hair, the coal, his walk, his gestures, everything is overplayed like he´s an actor on a stage. But once you remove all of that you have a perfect disguise. James lets Jack go that day, out of respect for the man and his love for Elzabeth (who the pirate is probably visiting). But if Jack is in port Royal that means the Pearl must be near to and James would like to know where near his port a ship like the pearl can hide.
James finds the ship hidden in an alcove that he was not aware of. In his mind he marks the location of this hiding spot and returns to the fort to continue his work. With an idea sprouting in his head.
