Anthology of Ableism: The Field Guide to Evil (2018, dir. various)

after a fantastically designed title sequence follows a very patchy anthology. every short is bookended (literally) by the exact same animation of the "guide", which quickly becomes repetitive. below my individual ratings for the shorts (which technically add up to a 2.25 but i went with 2 over 2.5 to express how unpleasant the overall watching experience unfortunately was)

1. the sinful women of höllfall: beautiful landscapes, surprisingly tender and realistic depiction of lesbian desire. the horror effects and the whole night scenes unfortunately sucked. 7/10

2. haunted by al karisi the childbirth djinn: haha aren't old disabled people creepy? made me root for the demon. 3/10

3. the kindler and the virgin: the real horror is the complete lack of hygiene. at least wash your hands and cook that heart before eating it! 3/10

4. beware of the melonheads: aren't disabled people creepy? or: the real horror is child negligence. 0/10

5. whatever happened to panagas the pagan: why is there so much unquestioned eugenicist subtext in all of these is the real question. 2/10

6. the palace of horrors: AREN'T DISABLED PEOPLE CREEPY????? guys i'm so tired. 1/10

7. a nocturnal breath: finally, some good fucking food!! actually genuinely scary in parts, amazing oppressive atmosphere, horrifying themes of abuse. very clever use of the short format. i'll have to check out gebbe's feature work because i really liked this. 9/10

8. cobbler’s lot: beautiful! so creative, so interestingly told, so melodramatic, so silly and irreverent. weimar expressionist cinema vibes. 10/10

i can't even pretend to appreciate all these girlboss redesigns/"updates" of female characters that seem to have had zero thought put into them beyond making her outfit more quote unquote "practical" anymore. like.. not saying i like the fact that every other woman runs around with their tits and ass out while all the dudes are fully clothed, but it's just like. please. for the love of god. if you're gonna redesign a character, redesign the character! don't just ctrl+t & drag the fabric down to cover her legs and call it a day!

idk!! like i realize this is a stupid, nitpicky little pet peeve, but there's just something so patronizing about someone resting on the brownie points they think putting a previously "scantily clad" female character in some uglyass pantsuit version of her original look will net them instead of bothering to put a little thought & effort into it and actually come up with something new for her? tits-and-ass designs are egregious & kinda annoying, yeah, but at least it (usually) feels like there was actual thought put into them lol

This Chapter: Rex gets Appo to tell him about what he and the 501st saw when the Override went live—the massacre of the Jedi Temple.

WARNINGS: SO MANY. HEED THEM. Graphic description of a massacre, including but not limited to the murders of children. Descriptions of traumatic events and their effects on the victims. Lots of temporary major and minor character death. All death is temporary/imagined. Any resemblance to real life events is coincidental/an inevitable result of the topic, and note that many fragments of this chapter were written two years ago.

This chapter is DARK, and it's also much longer than my usual chapters. We're ripping it all off at once like a bandaid, but PROCEED WITH CAUTION.

The emptiness where Appo should be vibrates—it feels scared. Not of Rex—for Rex. "You don't want to know what happened." "I might not," Rex agrees. "But I do know that whatever it is you experienced—I should have been there too." I am a part of the 501st, Rex doesn’t say, and wonders if Appo can hear. We bled together, cried together, laughed together. My blood is yours. Your pain is mine. Let me be a part of you again.

Laxus x Mystogan

Definitely, Laxus couldn't handle this guy. Arrogant, mysterious, unable to say a word, good for him he was a strong mage…Each time he came to the guild he made everyone felt asleep. Everyone, except Laxus. The thunder god wondering if it was on purpose or if he was just too strong for Mystogan's powers. He couldn't deny that he was intrigued by him.

He started trying to trapped the mysterious man the rare times he came to the guild. He stuck him in some corridors or in the exteriors of the building, trying to extort him some informations, or at least see his face.

There most of the time, Mystogan ended up getting angry, and they almost came to fight…Laxus had to admit that was even better. Finally that was almost like a game between them, and he had noticed that the other mage seems to kinda appreciate it too.

Yeah, definitively, Laxus couldn't handle Mystogan, but he was also terribly attracted to him…
