If you are trying to learn to knit and have no idea what everyone is talking about I've made a helpful guide to knitting terms that will help you learn the difference between a knit and a purl.

Hey beginner knitters:
I know I got a little flippant, but I wasn't thinking about implications, and I want you to know that I, and most people here on knitblr, are more than happy to help if you're having trouble with anything. There are, of course, limitations to how much help we can be in this medium, but frankly, that's often the limit to how much help you can get.
However, if you are looking for people to point out potential mistakes and areas of improvement when you post something, do make sure to indicate that. Just like with any other work that you post online, we're not going to say something unless we're 100% sure it's a mistake, and even then we'll think at least twice, because that's not what we're here for.
Speaking as someone who used to twist their purl stitches, saw that they looked different (I checked the ribs of my k2p2 rib and noticed that they looked different on the inside and the outside) and fixed the problem several projects in, you're much better off learning to get comfortable with needles and yarn and then trying to figure out how you're making your stitches. (And like @buttercupyarnart says, there's no need to knit your stitches untwisted, as long as you're comfortable with the fabric you make.)
Same for how you hold your needles and your yarn. I was taught to hold my needles with my hands underneath, in that pose that people always complain is drawn by people who aren't familiar with knitting, because no one knits like that. I learned a year or two in that that style of holding needles wasn't very popular anymore because it's more awkward, and taught myself to hold my hands on top. Much easier than learning to knit was, so there was no harm in learning that in two steps, because it's not as if I had to re-learn from scratch instead. (I wonder if this is why I have such a weird way of holding my yarn? It's part of why I generally don't teach, even if I'm doing a proper class and not a huge group of kids, how to hold the yarn. I demonstrate and explain that this is my way, there's lots of ways, and let the people who keep going figure out their own way to hold the yarn).
And even if you DO have a knitting teacher in the room with you, who can give you actual practical advice (and you're paying them, so they're going to correct you while you're there, even if it's not an ideal time to learn it), take what they say with a grain of salt. I ran across someone - and they were willing to tell this story themselves, it wasn't someone complaining about an awful teacher they'd had - who saw a student propping one knitting needle in their lap, kind of an awkwardly placed knitting sheath or knitting belt and scolded them, saying that they can't do that, they need to knit properly. I had student do this once, so I can tell you that it's a good way to knit, just kind of weird. I made sure that she knew that she should keep that style up, because it was efficient, and I showed her what I was doing, and as she was able to translate it to her knitting, it was all good.

standing in my truth
I'd leave Ray too.
I wouldn't invite Ray in the first place.
Ray has issues his friends are not equipped to handle. He obviously gets drunk every time they go out to the point that he has to be constantly taken care of all night because he fights others, he gets sick, and he blacks out; then, he wakes up hungover and barely functioning.
In a way, his friends are enabling him by continuing to go to the club with him knowing this is how he will act.
And hooking up with someone who makes plum wine . . .
Yeah, so I wouldn't invite Ray to the club (and I wouldn't have hooked up with someone who has blacked out twice from drinking if I was making illegal plum wine).
Baby, you need professional help.

Knitting Tumblr! I have wanted to learn to knit for years and have failed miserably at my previous attempts. I can now crochet, so I'm hoping it will come together for me this time - does anybody have any beginner videos they can recommend?

hi I’ve been wanting to get onto knitting got any suggestions for where I can find classes or start? I have no knitting experience but o know how to crochet (barely)
Everything depends on your budget. Both of time and money. And also how well you learn online.
Because you can go on to YouTube and find knitters willing to teach (I recommend Suzanne Bryant - she knows what she is talking about, and can prove it). But that can take a lot of time. And if you are the type of learner who needs to be able to ask questions etc... well youtube can't really do that.
You could locate your local yarnshop. They are likely to have lessons. Either group or one on one. The instructors are more likely to know what they are talking about, and you can ask questions, but that is also the most expensive option. If your local shop isn't that local or doesn't offer lessons, there may be a knitting or fiber guild in your area. The folks at the shop may know and if that fails, search engines help you find out. If all else fails, Facebook search for a fiber or knitting guild in your area.
If you need people to teach you and don't want to spend money on things that aren't beautiful yarn (I get it. Completely. Yaaaaarn!), I'd suggest checking if your local library has a class. If they don't, also check out the local church that has the largest population of little old ladies. If churches and you dont get along, don't worry - most church crafty groups meet during the week and are not heavily religious. The blue haired ladies are some of the best resources of knitting knowledge on this planet of earth. And if they don't have a crafting group, they know who does, when it meets, and who's 3-bean salad to avoid while there.

Are Knitting Books Now Obsolete?
Knitting books are obsolete. There, I've said it!
As a writer and lifelong bookworm, I love finding a new knitting book, newly published and on display in the bookstore. But lately, I’m finding myself less and less enthusiastic about newly published collections of knitting patterns, even if they are beautifully designed hardbacks with full color illustrations and photos. Nice to look at, but…? As some of you know, I often have the special treat…

Do you pick your stitches when you knit? Do you have a favourite way to purl that you'd like to argue in favour of?
My kid decided that they'd rather pick their stitches than throw them like I do. They are currently disappointed that they don't know how to purl yet.
I told them I'd ask for advice on what the best way for them to purl is. I'm pretty sure that they use standard Continental knitting for their knits right now, but I really only ever knit if I'm holding the yarn like that, so I cannot help. Any suggestions?

You know at first I didn't believe it when fiber artists on tumblr would tell me to be wary of the fiber art slippery slope. And yet. I hear the siren call of the spindle. Fellow crafters help me resist. Tie me to the fucking mast. Please.

How to knit double-sided cables - Knit & Crochet Blog
I never thought about double sided cables! I've lamented the appearance before, but the one time I cared to overcome it I made a pattern that did cables on alternating sides, incorporating the different back into the look.
This is a fantastic technique I'll be holding onto. I love learning new things, and I love that no matter how advanced I get in my crafts there's always something new to learn.
