I feel like some people haven’t truly processed this absolute truth: Rhaenyra is the main character of the story.
The Dance of the Dragons is about how Rhaenyra Targaryen was usurped, and how she reacted/what she did in an attempt to right this wrong.
So, why do I hear useless complaints about how Alicent is not shown giving birth in the series, or Helaena etc ?
They are just secondary characters who are part of Rhaenyra’s life and influence it to some degree, but it’s not their story.

saw a post shitting on people for liking female characters in asoiaf and hotd who were wronged and did not/were unable to fight back and "simply" didnt fight for a better life
like yeah its so simple to undo centuries of patriarchy. it's not like the female characters who did fight back weren't in constant danger because of all the forces working against them
there was also an implication that enjoying these characters somehow shows our own passivity and adherence to patriarchal values
(oh and apparently we hate strong women too. because as you know, only two types of women exist, and you can only like one of them)
turns out you can understand someone's entire ideology and psychological state based on which asoaif characters they like?
i don't think it's wrong for fans to feel a sense of kinship with tragic characters, especially if said fans feel trapped or have felt trapped by their circumstances irl (especially if they feel trapped because of conservative ideologies, like their favourite characters are)
yes it's good to have independent and strong characters to look up to. and it's important to advocate for yourself and make difficult decisions in life
but no one can be the hero of their own story all the time
sometimes you don't feel strong or brave and sometimes shit hurts and sometimes there's nothing you can do about it in the moment (or at all). and in those cases it's nice to have characters to relate to
just like it's nice to have sad music to listen to when you feel like crap. it doesn't mean there's something wrong with you
some women unfortunately are victims, and having empathy for them or even seeing yourself in them doesn't make you weak
edit: it's also very telling that the assumption here is that our interest comes from valuing passivity...what about anger and indignation at the way these women were treated? what about imagining better endings for them where they do get a better life? we aren't the ones who think so little of these characters that all we can imagine them good for is pity.

What I would have wanted to see between the 10 year gap:
Rhaenyra and Harwin’s romance (baby making)
Harwin’a subtle father/sons moments with his boys
How Laena claimed Vhagar
The fuck happened in the Strong family that Larys did not hesitate to unalive them
The romance between and maybe the wedding of Daemon and Laena
How Laenor and Rhaenyra would act all lovey dovey to just leave for the night for their lovers respectfully
Maybe some stuff about Viserys getting more ill and losing a hand and Larys spilling tea to Alicent

hiiiii! luv your blog and i was wondering your thoughts on yandere targaryens, velaryons and hightowers reactions when their darling has an assassination attempt happen to them? Like, darling is a valued member of the court or something along those lines. Platonic or romantic, it dont mind :), thank you so much and its totally cool if you dont want to write this <3
In a brief summary: chaos.
With the Hightowers first; Alicent and Otto will react similarly. Otto isn't as horrified as the others are. It's unfortunate that those things occur when politics are involved. That's one reason why Otto wanted you to leave your position. The best maesters will take care of you, and you'll be protected by guards he fully trusts. He will no longer allow you to take part in court proceedings after that incident.
On the other hand, Alicent develops a paranoia about the masters and guards because she believes that only a powerful person would attempt to take your life, implying that they may have other connections. She will always be by your side, tending to your wounds and even suggesting giving you a bath or feeding you.
Velaryons come next. Corly will be furious that someone tried to take your life, and he'll make sure the assassin is brutally put to death. He'll check on you frequently and make sure the maesters are performing their duties effectively. With no ifs or buts, he will surround you with guards from this point forward.
Rhaenys and Laena are quick to run to your aid. Even when other people reassure them it's safe and that the person responsible has been put to death. They almost never leave your side and when you wake up; they're there. Be ready for every drink and meal to be examined in advance.
Laenor's reaction is the most extreme of his family; he will be devastated and his initial instinct is to fight and kill the person who has harmed you. After he has calmed down, he will hold you close and sob as the possibility of your death dawns on him. After you recover, Laenor will become so overly attached that it almost becomes suffocating.
Last and final is the Targaryens.
Viserys, Rhaenyra, and Daemon are all enraged. Viserys' rage serves as a warning to the court that, despite how kind-hearted the king may appear to be, at his core, he is a dragon. Viserys will demand the head of the person and will keep half the castle guards with you at all times. It is likely he will do whatever he can to remain by your side, even leaving his duties unattended.
Like her father, Rhaenyra would demand the perpetrator's head. She will grow distrustful of those around her. She might even suspect the hightowers at some point. Your importance to her was known to them. She will keep an eye on the maesters and your handmaidens and chastise them if they show signs of laziness. They are to keep an eye on you day and night, as she requests.
If one thinks Rhaenyra’s reaction is extreme; Daemon shows otherwise. Just the sight of a small scratch sends him into a frenzy; imagine an attempt on your life. Your assassinator won't be killed; he'll be kept alive long enough. Torture, flogging, and starvation to the point they beg for death. He will allow no one to be near you without his permission. All the guards and handmaidens he suspects of being spies may even be lined up and slaughtered one by one. If it weren't for his brother's intervention, he could have committed a bloodbath.
Then comes Viserys’ children. Although Daeron is furious, he's more concerned about you than anything else. He is a bit skeptical of those around you like his mother is. As you are recovering, he will insist on being left alone with you. He’ll be so gentle. Taking care of you if you’re unable to do; dressing and tucking you in.
Helaena is a lot like Daeron in that she prioritizes you above all else. She leaves her family to attend to the matter. Others have given up trying to persuade her from leaving your side. Helaena will find it enjoyable to take care of you. She’s mostly elated to finally have the chance where you’re dependent on her.
Given that Aegon and Aemond are very possessive of you and get easily agitated when someone stares at you for too long, imagine the havoc they'll cause if they learn someone made an attempt at your life.
The assassin will be fed to Aegon's dragon. Most likely, Aegon will lock you in a room with constant security and ignore all of your protests. He will begin to have suspicions about the majority of the court members, particularly his half-sister.
Like his brother, Aemond will feed the assassin to his dragon, but not before torturing him for days. He will use their death to send a message that anyone who dares to go near his darling will have to deal with his wrath as well as Vhagar's. He won't lock you up in your room; instead, he'll follow you wherever you go. Even attending private meetings, basically being your bodyguard. If he must depart, he will take you on Vhagar.

So apparently, for the creators of HOTD it's feminist to strip Rhaenyra of her desire for the throne and her femininity then have her strangled by Daemon for no real reason, to make Alice a perpetual victim of her father, that Rhaenys is not a mentor to Rhaenyra and does not even seem to support her at first as an heir, having Viserys have Aemma's womb cut open so that she dies in excruciating pain instead of just having her die of her childbirth, create an artificial conflict between Rhaena and Daemon which has no coherence with the universe just with the aim of making the girl feel unloved, remove from Baela her resemblance with Daemon to instead associate her with Laena who she simply became the woman Daemon married even though she was Rhaenyra's best friend in the book... In addition to making her die a worse death than in the book, because apparently the way Laena died isn't shockingly sad and badass enough for them apparently ?! Without forgetting the fact of cutting the most interesting element, namely when she claimed Vaghar, because the claims of Aemond, a man, were more important! Basically, let's remove everything that made these characters strong or minimally impactful and strip them of it, because women must be nice or victims and not associate with men. And simply die giving birth ?! Something common at the time ?! No ! It has to be more sinister and horrible than that !

I had to explain why a character having autonomy in their narrative and doing something wrong doesn't justify racism and classism.
While explaining that these concepts exist in Game of Thrones and A song of Ice and fire.
The white feminism is dark and full of terrors. George could explain the concept of Intersectional Feminism, like dictionary definition, as the first part of the winds of winter, and some of you still wouldn't get it.
Like genuinely questioning, for a second, if Elia Martell would like the idea that her kids are illegitimate after she almost died twice giving birth and endured Aerys racism and prejudice and bore the brunt of Rhaegar's prophecy.
If Nettles and Daemon slept together, why would you need that to be inherently predatory and blurred consenually. Why should Nettles have to be good and pure of heart in order for you to acknowledge that Rhaenyra was wrong for what she said.
Why do show Baela and Rhaena have to like Rhaenyra? Why is it okay to sidestep the fact that Daemon doesn't seem to care about them after Laena dies?
Why do so many of you in the fandom create a third daughter just between Daemon and Rhaenyra or project onto Visenya (dead baby) rather than using the characters we have that don't have a lot of personality attached to them in the show canon?
The idea that we are "supporting our favorite war criminals" falls flat with the double standards y'all apply to characters (majority women) you all don't like.
Not to mention the way you all go out of your way to oversexualise all Dornish women while claiming canon reason (stereotypes about an outsider group in Westeros). I've seen strange things on these apps
Weird, weird behaviour, and I'll quote Shiv Roy of all people because a lot of you don't understand what you're doing. You just think your perspective is right because it doesn't actively click as a strange or wrong way to operate in the world.
Tumblr media
You all tend not to conceptualize women as autonomous beings in these stories unless they fit your narrative. It happens with Sansa, catelyn , Elia, Dany, Arianna, and Nettles, and because of the Hotd canon, all the Velaryon/ Targaryen women.
Even more of you can't seem to see how a victim can project and carry on the systems that oppress them because they are at least above someone morally for conforming to the standard rather than defying it. You can still root for them. (Alicent)
Some of you can't fit the idea that just maybe someone doesn't want to fix the system. They are entitled to be the exception to it. You can still root for them. (Rhaenyra)
Allow women to be characters, view them as characters, not concepts and projections and when it comes to woc in this universe, please understand that there are forms of prejudice that affect them that won't affect, for instance Cersei. There are ideas and concepts that are inherent to world building, and just because you don't see it often doesn't mean it isn't there, it just means we aren't interacting with the characters that experience it.
