Annalena Baerbock hat ein neues Lieblingsziel für Fotoshootings auf ihren Reisen in die Asien-Pazifik-Region entdeckt: Kriegsschiffe. Bereits im Juli 2022 hatte sie einen Besuch in Tokio genutzt, um einen Abstecher zur nahe gelegenen Marinebasis Yokosuka zu machen und sich dort auf einer japanischen Korvette ablichten zu lassen. Als sie im Januar 2024 in Manila eintraf, gingen Bilder um die Welt, die sie zeigten, wie sie an Bord eines philippinischen Patrouillenboots eine Drohne zu steuern versuchte. Für den Freitag schließlich hatte die Bundesaußenministerin die Besichtigung eines Patrouillenboots angekündigt, das in einer Werft im südaustralischen Adelaide liegt und dort unter Anleitung des Bremer Schiffbauers Lürssen für Australiens Marine gebaut wird: Nichts geht über eine romantische Kulisse. Mit ihrem Auftritt in Adelaide vertrat Baerbock zum einen die Interessen der deutschen Rüstungsindustrie. Lürssen hat Ende 2017 den Auftrag erhalten, als Generalunternehmer den Bau von zwölf Patrouillenbooten für die australische Marine zu leiten. Gebaut werden sie in Adelaide und im westaustralischen Perth. Im Februar hat Canberra angekündigt, man werde nun doch nur sechs Boote kaufen. Der Grund: Die acht Atom-U-Boote, die Australien im Rahmen des AUKUS-Pakts gemeinsam mit Großbritannien und den USA bauen will, werden – kein Tippfehler – 368 Milliarden australische Dollar kosten. Das sind nach aktuellem Kurs 225 Milliarden Euro. Da muss halt anderswo gekürzt werden. Lürssen ist sauer und hofft, als Ersatz gemeinsam mit Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems den Auftrag zum Bau der zehn Korvetten zu erhalten, die Canberra trotz allem noch beschaffen will. Dass Baerbock nicht in die Hauptstadt geflogen ist, sondern nach Adelaide, hat seinen Grund. Baerbocks Auftritt in der Kriegsschiffwerft betonte zudem die Bedeutung, die Marinen und auch Küstenwachen zur Zeit für die deutsche Politik in der Asien-Pazifik-Region besitzen – klar: im Machtkampf gegen China. Washington ist dabei, die Seestreitkräfte verbündeter Staaten in der Region mit gemeinsamen Manövern eng zusammenzuschweißen; das gilt vor allem für Japan, die Philippinen und Australien. Die Seestreitkräfte der drei Staaten hielten im April erstmals eine gemeinsame Kriegsübung mit der US-Marine vor den Philippinen ab; im Sommer werden ihre Luftwaffen wohl zu einem gemeinsamen Manöver in Australien zusammentreffen. A Brief Guide to Yachts

This is a continuation to my cultural education segment (aka my rich bitch guide).

The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “jaghts” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships.

The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720.

Some famous clubs include:

USA:

1. Annapolis Yacht Club: Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs

2. Chicago Yacht Club: Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.

Yachts are most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.

Different types of yachts:

Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails

Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors

Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors

Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining

Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.

Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds.

Catamaran Yacht: a yacht with two hulls (pontoons) often made of fiberglass that can be used in shallow waters.

Insane super yachts

Football club owner Shahid Khan's 95 metre Lürssen Kismet was delivered in 2014. On match days, a four-metre silver statue of a jaguar, its paw resting on a football helmet, graces the bow. Bulgaria’s caretaker government agreed on November 2 to an investment spending project to acquire 324mm homing torpedoes for the Bulgarian Navy’s forthcoming new patrol vessels.

Bulgaria ordered the two new patrol vessels in 2020 from German shipbuilding company Lürssen.

At the time, the country ordered the vessels without armaments, to stay below the envisaged billion leva spending on the project.

The vessels are being built in Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Varna and delivery of the first is expected in 2025.

In August 2022, the caretaker government agreed to the acquisition of anti-ship and guided missiles for the vessels.

Estimates are that the armaments for the patrol ships will cost between a billion and a 1.5 billion leva.

German Navy Christens 3rd K130 Batch II Corvette Karlsruhe (F267)

The German Navy has christened the Karlsruhe, the third ship from the second batch of its K130 Braunschweig class (sometimes Korvette 130) corvettes, at the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg, Germany. Karlsruhe's construction started in 2020 and later laid down on 6 October 2020 by Lürssen-Werft in Bremen. In September 2022 it was reported that increasing difficulties in integrating the command and control systems for the Batch 2 ships had resulted in a cost growth of 401 million Euros and at least a two year delay for the completion of the lead Batch 2 vessel, and potentially cascading delays for the next two ships in the Batch 2 program as well. The corvettes are scheduled to be fully operational by 2025, with comprehensive crew training and naval systems and technologies implementation handled by ship developers, NVL Group, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, and German Naval Yards Kiel.
