The summer solstice is connected with a number of customs and beliefs that are similar throughout Europe. In Slovenia, a characteristic supernatural being that makes an appearance during this period is Kresnik (Krsnik, Krstnik, Šentjanževec). Kresnik’s attributes are the sun and the fire (in Slovene, kresati denotes to kindle fire by striking). Judging by these attributes and narrative tradition, Russian philologist Nikolai Mikhailov established Kresnik’s similarity with the principal Slavic God Perun, the Thunder God and the conqueror of Veles. Like Perun, Kresnik had defeated the dragon, or Veles, God of the Underworld and of earthly riches.
(...) Kresnik has gradually lost his mythical character. While he was initially in the function of a god, he later became Prince Kresnik, or a kind of wizard, fighting the false Kresnik to ensure good crops for his lands; he thus assumed the role of clan protector, shaman, or sorcerer, the “ecstatic Kresnik”, as Zmago Šmitek named him (Šmitek 2004, 145).  The “ecstatic kresnik” differs from the “mythological Kresnik” in that he appears in the role of a “village shaman” fighting for the benefit of his local community.
It was believed that the “kresniki” were born with a mark upon their body, either still wrapped in their placenta or with eyebrows grown together, with teeth, a small tail, extra fingers or toes, etc.
- From Tradition to Contemporary Belief Tales: The “Changing Life” of Some Slovenian Supernatural Beings from the Annual Cycle, Monika Kropej.

miłej kupalnocki, happy midsummer, etc etc etc!
from both me and my favourite slavic-adjacent king!
kupalnocka (noc kupały, kupala night, etc) is the traditional west and east slavic celebration of the summer solstice, love, and cleansing. among a number of other things, women weave garlands of flowers, herbs, and ferns and send them floating down rivers and streams to divine their future luck in relationships. to have it brought back was seen as a confession of love (even if for one night...) and a man would sometimes follow a particular woman's wreath even into deep or dangerous waters to return it. people would head into the forest to search for the legendary fern flower. which does not exist, of course. but who could blame you and maybe somebody of your choice for spending hours, alone, in the woods, all night, looking for such an important, elusive flower...
fun fact: the embroidery pattern is riffed from the traditional handicrafts of a region spread between poland, ukraine, and belarus! most slav per stitch!

✨KUPAŁA NIGHT
Kupała Night is a Slavic holiday associated with the summer solstice of the Sun, celebrated during the shortest night of the year, which falls around June 21-22 .
In Anglo-Saxon countries it is known as Midsummer.
Kupalnocka is devoted primarily to the elements of water and fire, which have a cleansing power. It is also a celebration of love, fertility, sun and moon.
The Slavic customs and rituals associated with the Kupała Night were to ensure health and harvest for the saints. Bonfires were lit in which herbs were burned. Various fortune-telling and dances took place during joyful games.
Girls put wreaths with lighted candles into the currents of the rivers. If the wreath was fished out by a bachelor, it meant that she would get married quickly. If he was swimming, the girl wasn't going to get married soon. If, however, it got on fire, drowned or entangled in the rushes, it was foretold of this old age. They are probably the remains of the old spring magic rituals ending the enchantment of the "good beginning", referring to the soulful rituals and the coming harvest.
In some regions it was believed that you could not bathe in rivers, streams or lakes during the day until Kupala Day, while bathing after dusk or before sunrise cured various ailments, as water was then a healing element belonging to the moon.
The Kupala Night celebrations began with the ritual making of fire from ash and birch wood (some sources mention only oak wood). Jumping over the fire and dancing around was supposed to cleanse, protect against evil powers and disease. According to beliefs, aquarians, waterlines and drowners, as well as most other water demons, liked to lurk for summer-thirsty people who unreasonably take a bath before Kupała night. Only after this holiday, swimming in water became relatively safe.

Rule: shuffle your playlist. list the first 10 songs then tag 10 people.
(I think this is supposed to be fandom related? but here’s the deal... I have found myself in a lawless land of no time to collect all the mp3s I want and also refusal to pay for music streaming services lmao, so I don’t really have a good comprehensive current playlist to shuffle, let alone one curated for a fandom. I typically cycle through a handful of songs on repeat or a station Vibe depending on my mood. so what I did was use a number generator to first select a service and then a track based on songs I’ve liked on said service. they are largely more recent listens than what I have saved (think last 5 years vs 10-15). I did this just because I thought it would be fun. anyway enjoy this unhinged, limited, non-cohesive collection of songs I enjoy or have enjoyed lmfao)
Siren - Stalking Gia
Mystery of Love - Sufjan Stevens
Wake Me Up - Russkaja
Memory ft Constance - Dylan Emmet
Soap (Max Liese Remix) - Melanie Martinez
Kupalnocka - Sutari
Kupały - Mala Herba
Tell Me Ma - Gaelic Storm
One Jump Ahead (Reprise 2) - Mena Massoud
Muscle - Years & Years
I will note that I associate a number of Years & Years songs with my big ships so at least we hit something lmao
don’t really wanna spam people again on the heels of a different chain post, but if you follow me and see this, I’d love to see your jams! tag me if you do it!

What sorts of things are you cooking for solstice?
oh, oh so many things!
it will be a very intense night - and so the food is required before the celebration, and during, and then after. the full celebration, as my pre-pandemic practice would have it, does last nearly two days after all, and necessitates a couple of dishes to feed a couple of people. so just some of the things in the making, in no particular order:
- bone broth with blood sausage (think sundaeguk but with more local ingredients; preferably for after the celebration as it does wonders for tiredness and hangover and other byproducts of such long fun)
- stewed cabbage (a must have, in three versions: red, young, sauerkraut. old gods and cabbage go very well together)
- heart stew (chicken hearts! hearty and filling, you only need a small portion to feel full which is great for very warm days)
- a spicy marinade for various meats and vegetables to be roasted over the fire (probably very spicy so I won't be marinating things in it for too long. unless I forget.)
- kasza :-) not the most exciting dish but one of the traditions we like to maintain to feel connected to our ancestors. many of whom probably absolutely hated it, of course.
- sorrel soup (very light, sour, to be had during the celebration - although it's not for everyone given that sorrel might be a bit of an acquired taste, and we do make it with cannabis as well for added thrill)
- podpłomyki (to be had with any of the above, but above all else - sour cream.)
- an assortment of salads, both of the vegetable and fruit variety (sometimes the last thing you want during a sleepless mad night around the bonfire is fatty meat or heavy stew, and so very light refreshing dishes are also needed)
- potatoes. lots of potatoes, in lots of ways. can't go wrong with potatoes, especially young ones... and with dill...
- trout with ungodly amounts of garlic and dill to be roasted over the fire as well. (not much preparation here, admittedly)
that is, of course, if I do manage to find some final missing ingredients tomorrow in one of the small local stores - and if I don't fail miserably by falling asleep halfway through the prep as I did the last time we threw a grand kupala.
fingers crossed for me, ha.

Noc Kupały
                                           by me
Droga dziewko, o północy, gdy cię w tańcu porwie szał,
W tym księżyca pełni świetle zaduś swego serca żar!
W noc tak chłodną, rześką, wietrzną
Gdy swe ciało ogrzać chcesz,
Wznieć płomienie! Blask ich, lśnienie
Niech zaślepią oczy twe!
Nie dopuszczą wnet demona,
Który posiąść ciebie chce.
Droga dziewko, o północy, gdy cię w tańcu porwie szał,
W tym księżyca pełni świetle zaduś swego serca żar!
Ach Kochana, me wołania,
Nie dosięgły uszu twych.
Ty już jesteś zakochana,
W swoim rycerzyku cnym!
Ty w ofierze jemu składasz wolność i namiętność swą.
Twoja dusza, serce, rozum,
Już stracone! Jego są!
Do swych ramion, jak trofeum, miłość przymocuje twą.
Ostrzegałam, w snach wołałam!
Głucha byłaś ty!
I twą duszę rozszalałą wciągnął
Młodzian do swej gry!
Droga dziewko, o północy, gdy cię w tańcu porwie szał,
W tym księżyca pełni świetle uchroń swego serca czar!
