Oh boy, SAO! What else can I say except that it’s the tried and true classic that every anime fan loves to bash. Regardless of what the stigma tied to it, SAO popularized the ever famous isekai style of anime to a larger audience and made fantasy stories a lot more popular than they would have otherwise been. The first half of the season, which we will be focusing on, tells the story of Kirito and his trials to escape the world of Sword Art Online. In a not too distant future, a form of virtual reality headsets allow you to connect your entire nervous system to a VRV world and truly live the game. Once an MMO game is released that brings about the mechanics of a video game into a real life scenario, the players are trapped and forced to finish the game or else risk dying. The classic quote “if you die in the game you die in real life” comes from this show after all. Though Kirito is an experienced player, he struggles for survival because the normal world of games he is used to (one with no real repercussions) meets the real risks of life. This show makes you think about how far VR has come, what is the difference between life and simulations, and how the idea of being behind an “online” avatar changes a person.
Virtual reality has come a long way. Today, we see the development and use of Oculus Rifts and Vive headsets that break the barriers of reality. We can now play, game, and entertain ourselves in worlds that aren’t even real, imagining things that aren’t physically possible. We can reach new heights and create situations like SAO’s fantasy settings that feel real because we can see and interact with the environment with our own peripheral vision. As we move, our characters move. As we move our hands, so do the avatars. It is a new level of immersion because we can no longer see the physical boundaries of our controllers and a television screen. Instead, we only see the world we are simulated in. As of now, development of full body suits, trackpads, and much more are revolutionizing the way we live by making online environments. That brings up the question, however, of how we will be able to tell real from simulated? The show brings up the idea that a simulated world could potentially have the same feelings (the five senses) and consequences of real life. You can die, marry, and live out your life in an online world. At that point, will the real world be outclassed? Will the limitless bounds of the online world create situations that are more ideal than the real world? It’s up to us to determine what we will make out of this potential future. Given an SAO style world existed, would entire civilizations, families, and relationships be preferably fostered there? I believe that we would ideally want a mix of the two. Simulations could create an ideal world but it will always lack the fact that you are not physically present. Your being is not linked to the online world, but the physical one. Then again, the argument exists that your physical senses would be present thus making your being present. It’s very much in the eyes of the beholder. I think our physical world, though littered with flaws, should not be replaced. Think of it as your main save file in a game. The physical world is our main save and simulations are branch saves.
SAO brings up an interesting idea about what online avatars allow people to do. The mask that people can have online allows them to do and say whatever they want without filters. As a result, many people on anonymous social forums and video games are often crude and filterless in their mannerism. The idea of a privacy safety shield allows people to have freedom not known before. In SAO, this is symbolized by the avatar creation. By making a character, you can hide your true person. However, when the real game begins, the avatars are dissipated, exposing everyone’s true identities. This tied with the fact that SAO simulates reality can be a commentary that in real life, and even in the internet, you are never truly anonymous. In reality, you always show your face and use your voice to communicate. In the online world, however, you may also be exposing yourself. The existence of cookies, online accounts, and social media allow your online identity to be somewhat easily trackable. Third party sources can also gain access to your personal cameras, microphones, and virtual addresses, which when considered with the technologically filled world we live in, makes you ask: are we ever truly in privacy?
SAO is one of those animes everyone knows from the last decade. Some may say it is amazing. Others may bash it into the ground. All things considered, SAO created a world that blurred the lines between reality and fiction.
Although one might use video games, such as MMORPGs, as a way of escaping reality, SAO is ironically the opposite: a hyperreality.
Basically everyone in Aincad displays tendencies that conform with the hyperreality they are in. For example, I do not know if it exaggerated because it is an anime, but everyone act in ways they would only do in the real world, such as flinching from non-existent pain. Even Kirito is starting to believe he is only alive in Aincrad; he is forgetting about the real world as if his life transferred over from the real world. Whether or not Kirito is trying to escape from reality, it is unmistakable that he has already accepted Aincrad as his current reality. Asuna is a foil to Kirito, in that she desires to beat Aincrad so that she can return to the real world. In this way, she is the only one who is highly aware and can distinguish reality and fiction.
The mechanics and features of Aincrad contribute to its hyperreality. When everyone learns of the true intentions of the creator, Kayaba Akihiko, their avatars change into their real selves with the help of an in-game item. Also, despite eating not having a tangible effect, Asuna still maxes out her cooking skill. Aincrad has replicated many things from the real world so that it presents itself as more real to the players.
I never thought about SAO as a sort of hyperreality, but now that I know, I believe Akihiko designed SAO as an experiment to monitor over the 10000 players to ascertain whether or not they would eventually perceive SAO as reality or cling onto the hope that they would return to the real world.
Love kirisuna because it’s proof that bi couples can stay loyal to each other and I love Yujikirisuna because it proves that just because someone enters a relationship late doesn’t mean that they will be loved less
Unless its illegal, no need for ship bashing <333 ship all the ships, actually, I can name a 100 ships
literally, kirito and asuna are happily in love and committed to one another, kirito asuna and eugeo are also happily in love and committed to eachother
On a more possitive note, I’ve started watching Sword Art Online. It’s one of the worst things I’ve ever seen (and the last film I saw in cinemas was Cats to give you context for the scale i’m working on here) and I kind of adore it in much the same way I love garbage like Smallville or Twilight. It’s so stupid on so many levels. You could challenge someone to write the worst anime, and it would almost certainly be better than SAO. It’s almost hypnotic how terrible it is.
No one should watch this terrible terrible show so I therefore don’t feel at all bad that I’m about the spoil absolutely everything, but honestly if you do also hate-watch this please come talk to me about how terrible it is. I don’t know anyone else who watches it.
Highlights of Season 1 include:
everyone is trapped in an MMO, and if you die in the MMO you die IRL. but if you were a beta-tester you’re probably fine because they just let them keep all their levels and items from the testing, so they’re all massively OP and everyone just accepts this as a normal and non-game-breaking thing
it’s a fantasy MMO but there’s no races, no magic system, no weapons except swords and maces, and not even an option to dual wield - literally all you can do in this fucking game is stand in front of an enemy and mash the attack button. I’m pretty sure they’re trapped there because the devs realised no one would play this post launch-day otherwise because it’s boring as shit
when the villain traps everyone he also just changs all their avatars to look like they do IRL for absolutely no reason, like actually none, he doesn’t even say he thinks it would be funny, he just does it and no one questions it and it is literally never mentioned again because this is the worst TV show ever animated.
in the second episode the main character deliberately witholds information about how to defeat a boss, indirectly causing multiple deaths. there is absolutely no reason for him to withhold it, he was just being a jerk because he doesn’t like people
in the third episode they reset his entire personality and he’s now a selfless hero pretending to be a lower level than he really is so people will find him more relateable and be his friend because all he wants is to help people. this is not a consequence of episode 2, they just decided they didnt like the character as he’d previously been written.
he makes some new friends who are all objectively terrible people who have decided for no season that the twelve year old who doesn’t really know how to play and keeps having anxiety attacks about the very real possibility of death has to be the guild tank. the MC is high enough level to be functionally immortal in like half the levels, but doesn’t tell anyone this he just lets them go on bullying this child
none of his friends survive that episode, in the game or IRL. which is also a christmas epsiode. a child dies in battle because she’s a terrible tank and then a man commits suicide out of guilt, so then the main character murders santa to try and bring them back from the actual dead but it doesn’t work because again, this is a video game and they are dead IRL, so then he walks off into the snow alone. Christmas!
we meet the best character in the entire show in episode 4, Rosalia, who has gone evil and started just straight murdering people because she’s sick of being an attractive adult woman who can’t get a date because she’s surrounded by lolicons who are only interested in the preteen characters (not a joke, that comes up, the show is firmly on the side of the lolicons)
in the same episode we get an extended bra and panty sequence staring an actual fucking child, like canonically this character is maybe 13 at best. this is one of only 2 occaisions when they feel the need to undress a character and it’s the fucking 12 year old, it’s so gross it reads like a parody of itself
literally every single named female character aged over 8 who talks to the MC falls in love with him after like 5 minutes (and in season 2 this includes his actual sister). he shows absolutely no interest in any of them (including his sister, thank god) until...
the main character gets engaged to a girl he only knows from an MMO after a virtual single date (he doesn’t actually win her in a PVP match but only because he looses the match, he 100% canonically tries to win her in a match, which she is apparently fine with). he then doesn’t bother to ask for her real name until the final episode, he just calls her by her screen name
(that’s okay though becuase it turns out that this moron of a love interest used her real name, on a local server, in a game where your character looks like you do IRL, because apparently getting doxxed is her hobby)
they then get in-game married off screen. there’s not even like a still of a wedding photo. nothing. the main character proposes and then the show immediately jumps to the honeymoon, it’s fucking bizarre.
they find a creepy child dressed all in white with no memory alone in the woods a week into their honeymoon who starts calling them mommy and daddy literally seconds after they first meet her, and they don’t suspect anything suss is going on and adopt her
for hilarity bear in mind the main character may only be 15 at this point (he says he’s only just turned 16 in the last epsiode, but his actual birthday is never mentioned), and his virtual wifu is 16, but no one ever questions the marriage or the adoption, even though ‘hey marriage in a video game is as important and meaningful as marriage in real life’ is an actual conversation people have multiple times. also they think the child they adopt is an actual IRL 8 year old who thinks these randos she met in an MMO are her mum and dad and everyone just goes with that like it’s a totally normal thing
a character called ‘Thinker’ agrees to meet an enemy faction leader for peace talks. the “peace talks” take place in a high level dungeon and he is told to come alone with no weapons and no fast travel. he does this. no one ever comments that his name is ironic, and in fact they seem to think that being betrayed and trapped in a dungeon with a boss is a totally unexpected turn of events Thinker could never have planned for
they take their new baby into the dungeon to rescue thinker, because they went to the jean grey school of baby rearing, and she imediately reveals that she’s actually a magical maggufin with infinite power, murders the grim reaper, and then dies. In literally the second episode she’s in
after she dies the MC hacks the admin account of the game, converts her corpse into an in game item, and saves to the local storage on his console, with the intention of bringing her back to life as a robot once they’re saved from the game. I’m not joking, that’s an actual thing that happens.
the fact that the main character can just access the main admin account and make massive game-breaking changes isn’t used again in that game and he never thinks to try and use it to force log people out or give himself infinite life so he can just rush the game and free everyone. nope, convert a corpse into an item and then never think about it again.
there’s an entire episode where all they do is go fishing. its the only filler episode in the season, and it immediately follows the death of a small child. it’s the most tone-deaf beach episode in writing history
it turns out this game, this game where they didn’t bother coding in any difference races, weapons, or any kind of magic system, was intended to have fully sentient AI therapists, because why the fuck not at this point honestly
oh also the game has PVP and you can trick the game into thinking a sleeping player is in PVP with you in order to actually murder a real person without it flagging in-game as a murder making the crime impossible for the real life legal system to investigate even though you just murdered a person. and they expect us to believe this game had actual beta testers. at least cyberpunk wasn’t played on microwaves you connected straight to your brain (also not a joke, the VR consoles canonically work by sending microwave radiation into your brain, no wonder VR never caught on)
the set up for the show is that they have to reach level 100 of a dungeon in order to win. At level 75, the writers got bored and the show just ends.
it turns out the power of love allows you to just break the fucking game and the main villain literally has a line about how ‘love allows you to remove debuffs, huh, we didn’t think to plan for that’ because again, there’s no metaphors in this show, everything is 100% literal including the fact that falling in love with another player means you’re immune to the paralysis status effect
power of love also allows you to very briefly become a poltergeist after being killed, but only for like 2 seconds. again not a joke or a metaphor, main character is killed but then gets to hang around as a ghost for a little bit to enable him to defeat the boss. he also doesn’t die in real life despite that being the entire fucking premise of the show, again because power of love.
the bad guy literally has no plan, he’s just doing shit for the sake of having something to do. His actions directly cause the deaths of more than 4,000 people, and it’s not even in aid of anything. they ask him why he trapped 10,000 people in an MMO and allowed them to slowly die, and he’s just like ‘huh, i forgot i did that, random’ and then just fucking peaces out
the fact that he committed one of the largest mass killings outside of war never really comes up again, as far as we know he doesn’t even go to jail. i think the show actually kind of thinks he’s a good guy, which is a fucking WILD moral stance to take on the deaths of 4000 completely innocent people for absolutely no reason
If this sounds hilari-bad but you don’t want to invest the time to watch a show which is objectively garbage, it has an abridged series which is famously better than the show it’s parodying (i’m dead serious, people have character arcs, the getting married after one date thing is properly addressed, the mc has to deal with PTSD because of all his friends dying in epsidode 3, they don’t immediately follow the death of a child with an extended fishing montage, the villain has an actual plan). It’s mostly actually pretty good, but this is the internet and it’s an abridged series, so while there are a lot fewer yikes moments than most it still has enough that I’m not comfortable recommending it without the caveat. that said I still enjoyed it a lot, although possibly not at much as pointing and laughing at the garbage that is the actual show.
In talking with my partner a few days ago, I finally managed to articulate exactly why I identify so strongly with Asuna as a character.
She has imposter syndrome.
Going back to the Aincrad arc, she explains that the Lightning Flash isn’t really her, that it’s just a mask she wears to hide her vulnerability. Even after everything she goes through, she still doesn’t think the brave fencer is her during Mother’s Rosario. She’s worried Kirito will see through it and reject the “real” Asuna.
One of the biggest triggers for imposter syndrome is being plunged into a new environment, which... absolutely qualifies for her in SAO. There’s probably some connected depression and anxiety that come up as a result of her relationship with her mother as well. There’s reinforcement of the idea that she’s never good enough, that it will only take the tiniest misstep and the world will see her as the fraud she believes she is.
Because this is me, you know I’m going to bring this back to why I love YuuAsu so much. It’s the difference in how Kirito and Yuuki respond to Asuna. A lot of Kirito’s praise for her links back to her accomplishments: Her skill with a sword, her cooking, etc. There’s more there but that’s a constant through-line with the two of them.
Yuuki, on the other hand, compliments Asuna about her resolve and emotional strength in a way that directly refutes her negative outlook. This is actually effective in combating imposter syndrome, a turn toward intrinsic motivation rather than linking self worth to how others view you. When Yuuki credits her reunion with Asuna to her resolve and dedication, it dispels some of that doubt and allows her to reach out confidently to her mother. Even though I haven’t watched any of Alicization, this is supported in how Asuna always thinks of Yuuki when she needs strength. Because Yuuki’s the one who found it in herself. Even if you’re not into the ship, this is a pretty good indication of why Yuuki will remain one of the most important relationships in Asuna’s life.
(Please note that I’m not trying to bash Kirito and Asuna as a ship or anything, this is just why I personally prefer Asuna with Yuuki.)
I think maybe delving into this a little more in Reconfiguration will help me plot the course a little better and give me a better idea of what happens in the middle section of this fic.. oh, I really hope none of you thought I had a detailed plan. I know how it ends and some of the major beats, but there is no outline whatsoever. In fact, a character I assumed had been killed off is actually making an appearance in Chapter 14, sooooo... yeah.
The girl was beautiful, unlike anyone he'd ever seen before. Her chestnut brown hair was down to her waist, the sides in two little braids that met at the back of her head. Her eyes were a shining hazel. The way she moved, she carried herself like a noble, but her smile was kind and genuine. He was stuck to the spot.
It took a long moment to realize Eugeo was saying his name. "Kirito," came the exasperated boy's voice through the fog in his head. "Didnt you hear a word I said?"
"No," Kirito admitted, giving his partner a bashful smile. When he turned back, the girl was gone.
Seeing her roused something inside him. It wasn't just that she was beautiful. He'd seen plenty of beautiful girls before, and none of them had ever affected him like a lightning strike the way this one had. And more than that. Something about her felt... familiar.
It has been three years since the day they were released, and the world gathered in groups to mourn for those lost, those still waiting, and to support those who were fortunate enough to return.
Marinette was tired, she knew she wouldnt have been able to sleep without dreams of vibrant red and shattering glass from fading figures, so she work and worked- and now she was early.

...Who is that familiar name Lila just said?

Heres everything you need to know about the Fanweek with all the details and stuff! Though the rules of it are standards like other Fanweeks, its nice to give it a read anyway.
Rule No.1= Theft is not allowed!
I think its self-explanatory that theft in every form of content, not only art, is not allowed nor tolerated. In the end, it makes you look bad anyway, so it’ll be the best to not even try to do this. We do our best to watch out after that. If we notice it, we wont reblog it. But if we accidentally do and you think somethings wrong about it, feel free to contact us and we will investigate it! The result is that we will delete it then if its really true.
Rule No.2= NSFW Content and gore
Not Safe For Work Content is allowed, but please add a warning in the tags. For those who do not like to see content like that, blacktag the tag. If one of your entries might contain blood/gore, keep it at a minimum. Though entires which includes gore are on thin ice...also don’t forget to add warnings as tags!
If you are unsure about it, feel free to contact us!
Rule No.3=No Negative Speeches
Because this event is created to share our works about Yujikiri, we do not want to see any form of negativity such as bashing about a specific character/ship and attcking other people etc. In short-every hate-filled comment/opinion. This shouldn’t be a problem though as long as you have a fun and friendly time shipping Yujikiri.
Rule No.4= Your entries must be centered about Kirito and Eugeo
Whether it be Yujikiri, Kiriyuji, Kiriyujikiri, in a romantic, platonic or even queerplatonic is up to you! Important is, that every entry dedicated to the Fanweek, must be centered about Kirito and Eugeo. Its allowed to add other characters/ships in the background but don’t lose the focus and remind yourself that we want to have Yujikiri for it to have a place in this event and a reason to reblog it.
Rule No.5= Tag your works!
Always tag your works with #yujikiriweek and/or #yujikiriweek2020! Its even better if you put it within your first five tags so its easier for us to find it!
Rule No.6= Post-Time for the Fanweek?
The Fanweek will begin on the 14th March (UTC +0) and will go seven days. Post your entry on the day with its fitting prompt! Late submissions are allowed and still reblogged, as long as they are still posted in a timespan of seven days after its official deadline of the Fanweek!
Rule No.7= Any contribution is allowed!
Fanart, Fanfics, Edits, Fanvideos (such as AMVS or Animatics for ex.), cosplay...and even little headcanons are welcome! Theres no minimum or maximum of length for it. If you also want to mix prompts together, thats great! If you want to make multiple entries for one prompt, thats awesome too!
Still have questions? Contact the blog or @clarenspou (the current mod) and we will answer it right away!
In my own way of fighting off my writer’s block and dealing with the Eugeo loss, I’m doing a rewatch of Alicization 1st half to freshen my mind, write down anything I find interesting or missing as a LN and manga reader, and get inspired for fic ideas for me and my friends, maybe :P. My goal is to finish all 24 eps before Kirito's narrative comes back in Alicization 2nd half.
- Seeing these children again being all cute and happy put a smile on my face :) Don’t remind me what happened to them later
- I know I can’t ask too much of a 22-minute length for the young Rulid Trio but I wish we saw more of these kids playing around with each other, like the manga did:
- Just a possible character reading: Eugeo possibly saw Alice as a stand-in for his older sister Celinia (or Sulinea in the fan translation) because by the story’s beginning Celinia was married off away from home. In LN while Kirito complained about Alice being late he said to Eugeo: “In two years she’ll be like your sister and claim that she can’t go into the forest because it’ll get her clothes dirty”. Also when Eugeo was imagining Alice’s future, he thought about this possibility: “Like Eugeo’s eldest sister, Celinia, would she marry into another family?”. In vol 14 Eugeo said Celinia used to take care of him when he was very young, and along with his passed-away grandfather she was one of the few family members who truly cared for him, so he must have missed her. (I’d like to have a fic idea about it some day).
- I don’t ship this but what a cute moment, I wish we had it in anime too:
- And yeah, you pretty much know the drama with Alice touching the Dark Territory. Eugeo had a hard time sleeping while thinking about what happened, but I love how in LN in the tomorrow morning he saw Kirito, both boys only looked at each other familiar features and already felt relief and shared bashful grins:
- Too bad for both boys, right after this Alice got taken away, Kirito got erased from UW while Eugeo was left alone in his guilt for 6 years.
- I wish anime can show the Asuna/Sinon sleepover scene in the LN instead of the original GGO scene, but this might do aaargh:
- The similar consensus among most LN readers are that we are pleased with the first 3-4 episodes of Alicization. The adaptation while trimmed out some small details and changed a few things in ep 4 still resonated with us through its presentation overall. So of course I’m pleased with this 1st episode too. The biggest loss is for Kirisuna fan though:
Another cut detail is the cliffhanger when Asuna’s heart rate monitor of Kirito dropped to zero. Anime shouldn’t have introduced the heart rate monitor then didn’t use it later. Though in my view, getting your lover a heart rate monitor for reasons other than medical care is just creepy, not romantic :/, so if they already cut the ambulance scene, why not cut the heart rate monitor?
I just wanted to say thank you and I appreciate the way you write Kirisuna even though they broke up. I love them in SAO and I can’t help but feel sad when Yujikiri fics bash Asuna. Thank you for writing them in such a loving way even if they aren’t together in your fics.
anon 🥺🥺 thank you so much, this ask means a lot to me!! i just really cannot ever see kirito and asuna disliking each other, they’re a couple that, even if they did break up, i can’t see them not having a huge amount of love and respect for each other still, even if they don’t love each other like a couple anymore. thank you for the ask this is so nice
I cut out the Lycoris (Myosotis DLC) Butler scene because I really wanted the focus on Yujikiri and also wanted to talk about Eugeo’s body language here...
quick loose translation:
Eugeo: “Kirito..! That outfit really does look good on you!”
Kirito: “Is that so..?” (you think so?)
Kirito: "But you look really fresh all-dressed in black too though, Eugeo.” (Like a whole new man.)
Kirito: Ah however...that damn Alice really is taking long...
...I already mentioned this in another post---but the way Eugeo sways his head and hips and smiles at Kirito when he gets complimented is just so lovey-dovey. (◕‿◕) ♡
I also noticed a few other things after downloading this video:
Eugeo’s been standing daintily and looking at Kirito in silence this whole time if you really think about it?! He only decides to speak up after Kiri adjusts his tie, omfg
When he calls out Kirito’s name, it sounds hurried--the tone in his voice gets high and breathy (Shows that he’s so awed and excited lol)
Eugeo nods rather frantically when Kirito asks “You think so?” (SO CUTE OMG)
I seriously can’t get over the way Eugeo gasps and smiles after Kiri’s compliment omfgggg💖💖💖😭
The way he sways and tilts his head and keeps his dreamy smile even when Kirito’s looking for Alice?! 💖 😭 💖 😭 💖 TOO PRECIOUS!!
There also really no reason for Eugeo to pose like that, they’re alone--no masters around?? He’s probably standing like that because he’s (feeling) bashful lol omfg. 😂 💖
*WARNING THIS IS MY PROMPTS IDEAS SORRY IF NOT WHAT YOU WANT*
As I have already said this is my prompts ideas I’m sorry if you got excited over nothing. anyway this is where I’ll post prompts ideas please feel free to look inside and if anyone will be wanting to make a prompts from me please message and credit me is all I ask for. Any way I’ll probably be updating once a week but life gets in the way sometimes plus I have school so I won’t always update on time. I know probably no one will do any of these or look at them that’s fine I just want to put out something I’m proud of plus good training for writing anyway that’s all I have to say so good morning afternoon or night goodbye.
