Why Her?

This series caught my attention from the first episode. Soo Jae is a strong female character that lived thinking she had the upper hand when in truth she was being used by Choi Tae Guk.

This series follows the structure of the usual law enforcement series: the team (whether police or lawyers) start solving crimes that help them solve the big case that was committed a long time ago. In that sense it doesn't move far from its genre and I like this structure. But at the same time, it had its original aspects. We don't usually see a female character who is not afraid to show her arrogance the way Soo Jae did at the beginning. She is a complex, grayish character who can be disagreeable and cruel but also vulnerable and empathic. I think the plot twists were different the usual ones. Usually the victim doesn't want to see the person they love after learning the person wronged them in some way, but Gong Chan's feelings for Soo Jae didn't waver when he learned that she gave up on him on his trial. I liked that he had the maturity and empathy to understand her situation and still be grateful for what she did for him. She couldn't see him at first because she felt guilty but was able to get past it as they worked towards solving the case. it blew my mind when Soo Jae learned that her child had not really died at birth. And the background history between her and Choi Tae Guk's family was something I hadn't seen coming either.

This story weaves the double standards of the society where the story is set. Women are not truly protected against sexual harassment and other sexual offenses. I have seen this in other series, but this one really shows it in its cruelty and by women themselves. It is something to think about. . .

I liked the fact that we do get a hearing where the truth is exposed. Lately i've seen series in similar genres where the criminal gets away with it by committing suicide. In this case Choi Tae Guk does commit suicide but the world knows what he did and his partners do get to pay for their crimes, although they want to pin the heavy responsibility on the dead.

Soo Jae changes from the ambitious women to a woman who wants to be an ethical professional. And she wants to truly be independent and free. It leaves us with questions related to her health and her relationship with Gong Chan, but that is life and what matters is that the series leaves us with the sense that things will be okay.

This is a good series to watch.

«Celebrity» y «Summer Strike».

Decidí reseñar por primera y tal vez única vez dos k-dramas al mismo tiempo, los dos últimos que he visto y en los que hallé un contraste tan interesante, que deseé incluirlo aquí y de paso recomendar verlos en ese orden, si es que no has visto aún ninguno de los dos. Estos son: «Celebrity» y «Summer Strike». Ambos, de una extensión de doce capítulos, nos muestran, enmarcado por supuesto dentro de la cultura coreana, dos formas diametralmente opuestas de vivir y de perseguir la felicidad o el éxito. La primera, Celebrity, es sin dudas una crítica muy bien lograda a la frivolidad y superficialidad en la que nos vemos en mayor o menor medida casi todos sumergidos, ayudados por la era tecnológica que nos presenta a ciertos individuos como influencers o íconos con vidas en apariencia perfecta, que gozan de los beneficios de la fama y la fortuna pero que en la intimidad sufren las indeseables consecuencias de exponer sus vidas, así como la falta de conexiones interpersonales profundas y fiables. En Summer Strike ocurre lo contrario. Son estas relaciones sinceras, reales y cálidas las que surgen poco a poco entre la protagonista y los habitantes de uno de esos pequeños pueblos costeros que recuerdan al de otros dramas, de la misma vibra, como «Hometown Cha cha cha». El lujo en este caso no es material sino personal, espiritual.

Dicho esto, ahondaré un poco más en cada una de ellas.

Celebrity narra la historia de Seo Ah-ri (Park Kyu-young), una chica de unos treinta años que trabaja vendiendo cosméticos puerta a puerta y lleva una vida sencilla, hasta que se ve de pronto, involuntariamente en un inicio, embarcada en una lucha encarnizada por alcanzar el estatus que supo tener en su juventud pero que perdió al entrar la empresa de su padre en bancarrota. Poco a poco y casi sin quererlo, se convierte en aquello que critica, puesto que es consciente de lo nefasto de ese mundo que mide a las personas de acuerdo al número de seguidores de su cuenta de Instagram o la marca de las prendas que usa, y en el que nadie está a salvo de la traición o el escarnio púbico.

Me gustó mucho la modernidad de su estética, bastante acorde con el tema, y lo extraño de la trama que sabe mantener el suspenso desde el inicio. En un ida y vuelta entre el pasado cercano y el presente, en el que Seo Ah-ri ya es una celebridad con millones de seguidores, nos muestra una historia cargada tanto de lujo como de triste realidad. Son pocas las personas capaces de renunciar por completo a las redes sociales. Del resto, muchos pasan gran tiempo de sus vidas espiando y envidiando la de quienes la exponen y hacen ostentación de su armada felicidad o bien opinando de los demás con la liviandad e impunidad que brinda el anonimato. Todo sentimiento negativo se cultiva fácilmente en ese caldo de superficialidad y a veces hasta degradación humana.

Claro que no se trata de demonizar a quienes consiguieron un asiento en el palco vip de la vida, sino de comprender que en aquel lugar privilegiado en lo material tampoco se es necesariamente feliz ni es la única forma de éxito o realización. Que quien de verdad fracasa es aquel que vive pendiente de la vida de los otros, quien se deja influir por la envidia y permite que estos impulsos bajos determinen sus acciones (como lo demuestran constantemente en Celebrity las integrantes de un grupo selecto llamado «Las Gabin»).

Sinceramente, el final de Celebrity no me convenció, especialmente si no habrá una segunda temporada; pero hasta los momentos finales del último capítulo me pareció un drama fresco y profundo en su superficialidad, que, si fuiste capaz de mirar un poco más allá, te lleva a preguntarte ¿Dónde reside lo verdaderamente importante? Y allí es cuando llega Summer Strike a respondernos.

En Summer Strike, una joven de 28 años, Lee Yeo-reum (Interpretada por Kim Seol-hyun) recibe dos duros golpes que la dejan durante un tiempo viviendo triste y deprimida, como un autómata, hasta que decide cambiar su vida y toma una decisión drástica: renuncia a su trabajo, en el que era además maltratada por su jefe y abandona Seúl llevando consigo lo que cabe en una mochila. Así llega a Angok, el pueblito costero que no la recibirá amigablemente en un inicio, pero donde encontrará la tranquilidad (de a ratos) y las respuestas que busca. En coreano, el título original de este drama es «No quiero hacer nada», y es que ella, cuyo nombre significa justamente verano (summer), declara una huelga a la vida. Usa sus ahorros de años y el dinero que le dejó su madre para vivir sin trabajar, al menos por un año, intentando disfrutar al máximo de su nueva experiencia.

Cada personaje de este drama me resultó adorable y me recordaron a otros entrañables como los de «Romance is a bonus book», «Encounter» o la que ya mencioné, «Hometown Cha cha cha». Personas sencillas pero que comparten lo poco que tienen y encuentran la felicidad en las pequeñas cosas.

El coprotagonista, interpretado por un actor que me encanta, Im Si-wan, es bibliotecario y carga consigo una historia familiar desgarradora que ha dejado una marca tan profunda en él que aún veinte años después continúa sufriendo sus consecuencias, como el haber abandonado la universidad a la que ingresó a los diecisiete años y vivir humildemente a pesar de ser un genio matemático de brillante futuro. Pero allí está el punto clave de esta historia, su moraleja; un futuro brillante no necesita de grandes proezas o logros académicos o de cualquier clase. Él aún lo tendrá porque con la llegada de Yeo-reum juntará el valor para afrontar su pasado y sanar sus heridas y confirmará que no quiere dejar Angok. A su lado se siente cómodo y puede ser él mismo. Mudo ante los extraños, con ella no logra dejar de hablar.

Repleto de reflexiones y disparadores de otras muchas (como el abordaje de la pérdida), este drama acaricia el corazón con la superación de sus protagonistas y la calidez de sus interacciones.

A veces estamos prontos para juzgar las vidas y decisiones de los demás, pero no tenemos forma de saber qué sucesión de hechos los dejaron allí. Tampoco deberíamos juzgar a una persona por la primera impresión, como no hay que hacerlo con un libro por su portada.

Pensaba cómo todo sucede por una razón y las decisiones que tomamos nos van guiando hacia el centro mismo de nuestra propia existencia, al tiempo que afectamos la de los demás. Una forastera llegada de Seúl agitó las aguas de un poblado y sus vecinos; ella, con sus acciones desinteresadas y generosas, creó lazos familiares; se convirtió en amiga, nieta, hermana mayor… encontró su hogar y comenzó a serlo para Ahn Dae-beom (el bibliotecario). Ella no usaba maquillaje, pero sí la misma ropa una y otra vez, el mismo par de zapatillas, nada de objetos de marca que cuestan una millonada, pero era rica y feliz… como yo y quizá como vos, que lees esto ahora.

Tuve que grabar con mi teléfono una escena del último capítulo en el que la prota da su definición de felicidad, y transcribiré aquí una buena parte, porque me parece hermoso y además soy ansiosa y no quiero esperar a que lo veas (si lo deseas puedes dejar de leer aquí mismo jaja):

«Pensé en lo que es la felicidad. Lo busqué en el diccionario. La felicidad es estar complacido, satisfecho y alegre en la vida. Descubrí que esa definición era muy larga, así que decidí hacerla más corta. Felicidad. El estado de ser suficiente. Recordé lo que pasó hoy. Anduve en bicicleta por la brisa fría de la mañana todo lo que pude antes del amanecer. Estaba complacida. Fue suficiente. Volví a casa sedienta y bebí agua. Recordé lo que dijo la señora Jung, que el agua es la más deliciosa. Eso es cierto. Fue suficiente. Cuando cuelgo mi ropa me gusta el sonido del estampido de mi ropa y me gusta el persistente olor a detergente en mis manos. Fue suficiente. Me dormí en la biblioteca gracias a la hipnótica luz de la tarde. Fue una dulce siesta. Fue suficiente. Siempre es divertido pararse frente a los estantes, elegir qué leer. Es emocionante. Fue suficiente…»

Suficiente… aquellas chicas de Celebrity no sabían lo que era eso; siempre querían más, siempre estaban inconformes y aborrecían cualquier logro del vecino; lo supieran o no llevaban una vida vacía. Y entonces encuentras la respuesta: lo verdaderamente importante reside en lo simple, en las pequeñas bendiciones de la vida, en las personas que nos quieren sinceramente y a la que queremos y lo que podemos hacer por ellas, en ser capaces de decir con una sonrisa «No necesito más que esto, es suficiente».

En resumen, un poema convertido en kdrama.

Ah, y ellos… ellos dos son tan tímidos y adorables…

En conclusión: Es interesante el contraste, Consumismo y conexión virtual vs Conexión real interpersonal… así que véanlas a las dos, una después de la otra o por separado, pero véanlas, sobre todo a Summer Strike… aunque con una caja de pañuelos de papel a mano. XD

Disculpen, pero antes de terminar se me ocurrió añadir algo personal… Estos son los momentos en mi vida (en los que logro pensar ahora mismo, al menos) de los cuales puedo decir «Fue suficiente»:

Cuando veo doramas junto a mi madre y hermana y luego los comentamos y fangirleamos por un tiempo…

Cuando leo por las mañanas en el balcón, especialmente si es un día soleado...

Cuando escucho una canción que me gusta mucho y me muevo a su ritmo (siempre que nadie me vea XD)… y cuando bailo junto a mi sombra proyectada en la pared.

Cuando como la deliciosa comida que hace mi madre (me siento mal por quienes no pueden probarla y por quienes no tienen la oportunidad de comer comida casera todos los días… :( Fighting!!!).

Cuando juego al póker con mi hermana… hace poco le enseñé y es divertido ver cómo le dan pena las cartas pequeñas, las malas manos. Ella es tan amable que llega a ese grado de empatía. XD

Cuando veo pajaritos o mariposas desde la ventana del balcón…

Cuando encuentro libros viejitos pero interesantes en la librería de usados…

Cuando hace frío y puedo usar mi bata púrpura…

Cuando escribo algo con lo que me siento realmente satisfecha (no ocurre muy seguido Jaja. Es otra cosa que tengo en común con Yeo-reum…)

Cuando converso hasta tarde y reímos con mi hermana (como lo hacen Summer y Spring XD)

Cuando descubro música nueva que me gusta…

¡Cuando sueño con música! (a veces puedo escucharla en sueños y hasta segundos después de despertar).

Cuando llueve de noche…

From YTV releasing 1/11 about Soga, who, after a divorce and relocation to Osaka, seeks solace in dining at 26-year-old Sakae's restaurant. Unbeknownst to Soga, Sakae sees him as more than just a regular customer.

Perfect Propose

Fuji TV (the Pornographer series) adapting Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team includes Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (scriptwriter for “Old Fashion Cupcake”). Hiro’s so stressed at work he barely has time to eat so he passes out on the sidewalk. An unfamiliar face saves him and insists that they once promised to marry each other.

Love For Love's Sake

Based on the Manhwa Love Supremacy Zone by Hwacha, this will star actors Lee Tae Vin, Cha Jun Wan, Oh Min Su and Cha Woon Ki. The plot of the drama is based on Tae Myung Ha, a young man who is dropped into a game based off of a novel that he knows. His mission is to make another player, Cha Yeo Woon happy. Cha Yeo Woon is Myung-Has favourite character in the novel. But then the game starts going completely different from the novel.

Love in the Big City

Movie adaptation of Booker nominated famous coming of age novel ‘Love in The Big City’ by Park Sang-Young. A cynical yet fun loving student writer name Young pinballs from home, to class, to Tinder matches. He and Jaehee, his female best friend and roommate, frequent nearby bars where they push away their worries about life, love, and money with soju and Marlboros. But as time passes Jaehee settles down and leaves Young to face his problems on his own, finding comfort in the arms of the series of men, including one whose handsomeness is matched by his coldness and another who might be the great love of his life. Not really BL. To star Kim Go-eun (The King: Eternal Monarch), Noh Sang-hyun (aka Steve Sanghyun as Young) and Nam Yoon Su (The King’s Affection). More here.

Casting happened 9/23. This is a supernatural romance (my ghost boyfriend trope) ‘เดือนพราง’ by Violet Rain. A Bangkok writer is hired to write an article about an old mansion in Chiang Mai which is being converted into a café. He gets into an accident and nearly dies on his way there. After that, he sees the ghosts of people who died at the mansion, one boy catches his attention. Stars Benjamin Brasier (2 Moons 2) and Folk Touch Inthirat from Brothers. Trailer here.

A reminder we had c. 136 BLs release in 2023 but c. 55 that did not get made.

That seems about right.

Of those announced we seem to get about 2/3 actually released for the year we are told they'll release in.
