Hidden truths. Fading memories. Bomb-proof love.
Es and Flo fell fiercely in love in the 80s. They’ve been secretly living as lovers ever since. As Es becomes more forgetful around their home, an unexpected carer arrives.
Who sent this woman? Why? Can they trust her?
As the outside world comes crashing in, Flo fights to protect the life they’ve built together over forty years behind closed doors. And faces the hardest battle of her life – to hold on to the woman she loves.
Coloured with memories of the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp – where Es and Flo first met as activists – this sharply observed new play by Jennifer Lunn celebrates the love of an older lesbian relationship, women coming together to fight for what’s right, and the healing power of chosen family.
Winner of The Popcorn Writing Award (2020) and the Nancy Dean Lesbian Playwriting Award (2022) Es & Flo is a Wales Millennium Centre production, premiering on stage in Cardiff this spring before transferring to the Kiln Theatre London, 5 – 24 June 2023.

I feel like I’ve done you all a national disservice by not screaming about Two Strangers Carry A Cake Across New York as soon as I got home from seeing it. I went in not knowing what to expect at all, but I mostly want to tell you all that it was SO FUNNY! The entire theatre was in stitches, I can’t recommend it enough. Funny, serious, cool set, Sam and Dujonna were amazing, and £10 tickets for under 26.
(Note that it’s at the Kiln Theatre, not in the west end, and to be safe around the Kilburn area at night 😊)
**(it’s now transferred to the West End!)

So, basically the main message of this chapter is that criminality is eternal and ineradicable: “Beneath the obscure roof of their cavern, they are continually born again from the social ooze. They return, spectres, but always identical; only, they no longer bear the same names and they are no longer in the same skins. The individuals extirpated, the tribe subsists.” The only hope to make it vanish is rather utopistic and so… eighteenth-century in its spirit: “What is necessary to cause these spectres to vanish? Light. Light in floods. Not a single bat can resist the dawn. Light up society from below.” In the Gillenormand’s chapters, Hugo could mock the eighteenth century as something outdated as much as he wished, but after all, he himself was still harbouring ideals of the Enlightenment (and there were a lot of references to it in the convent digressions). It warms my heart for the eighteenth century will always be my first love!
We are back to theatre metaphors: the quartet “undertook the preparation of the scenery. They labored at the stage setting”; and, of course, the most telling of these metaphors is “They kept a troupe of actors of the shadows at the disposition of all underground tragedies.” I find it amazing, though, that Hugo chose to speak about such a down-to-earth topic as criminality using the vocabulary of theatre. This way he (un)consciously recognizes that it is a kind of art that demands a certain degree of talent and creativity. However, this absolutely contradicts his main message that criminals are uneducated, dehumanized monsters inhabiting “the lowest depths”.
And here all these named and unnamed chthonic creatures are drawn to the caverns: they sleep in “the lime-kilns, sometimes in the abandoned quarries of Montmatre or Montrouge, sometimes in the sewers.”
I appreciate Hugo mentioning the real Vidocq as a nemesis of his fictional quartet; it adds some… I don’t know… substance and credibility. Also, before giving the list of names of Patron-Minette affiliates, Hugo says that these “names have survived in special memoirs”. Were they indeed mentioned in some memoirs (Vidocq’s?) or is Hugo making it up?

"Shinichi Sawada was born in 1982, in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. After several years at a special school, he was transferred to a boarding school in the city of Kusatsu where he was diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. At the boarding school, he began attending a pottery workshop. In 2001 the head of the workshop arranged for the construction of a small cabin located in a remote area a few kilometres from the main building. It is in that secluded spot, in complete quiet, that Shinichi Sawada produces his sculptures.
He fires his pieces in a large earthen kiln that is lit just twice a year. As a result, his sculptures acquire a natural sheen and a distinctive reddish-brown colour, lighter or darker depending on the flames. Then he places them on shelves in his own self-made studio that he visits only twice a week. His works are studded with many spikes that invest the pieces – demons, monsters or masks? – with a fanciful and at the same time frightening beauty.
The artist unhurriedly fashions each spike and attaches them one after another to the bodies of his sculptures. It is still not clear whether Sawada is following some image that has already formed in his mind, but the way he works – at a calm, measured pace, without hesitant pauses – suggests that he has a clear idea of what the finished piece should look like. He manages to complete even large sculptures in four or five days. Perhaps his works are allusions to ancient civilizations, such as the Jōmon culture. Perhaps these fantastic beings are the product of a personal mythology inspired by protagonists of age-old Japanese legends: beasts, ghosts, spirits.
His work has something in common with the masks of the Noh theatre, manga characters and African tribal art."Shinichi Sawada. Images from the Depths of the Mind from the collection of the Outsider Art Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands).

top five shows :) (tv or theatre or anything, doesn't matter)
currently my favourite theatre shows are:
— fun home
— company
— chicago
— cabaret
— ragtime
(these are just musicals but i figured plays have their own separate category because overall i am ... bad at picking my top five. also in no particular order... for plays the most quickfire list in the world: es & flo @ the kiln, medea @ soho place, phaedra @ the national theatre + a combination of the crucible and hamlet 4 the shakespeare rep...)
and as for tv ... i don't watch tv that often tbh. in no particular order again:
— frasier (not cheers let me be clear. haven't watched that show yet)
— bojack horseman
— madam secretary (this answer is super ironic because a) hate the writing but b) the actors are brilliant and i personally love the characters)
— a mix of yellowjackets + the bear. the former because #cannibalism but also because it appeals to the human in me. (not s2 tho)
— law & order: trial by jury (i'm extremely biased because ms. tracey kibre has like max five fans and i'm one of them)

My OC: Holly Reed
Tumblr media
(Piccrew: https://picrew.me/image_maker/98358)
Holly will be one of the three OC protagonists in my upcoming Naruto isekai, Who You Are At Night.
Age: 22
Birthday: December 2
Home: Orlando, Florida (in the Real World)
Occupation: Fan artist specializing in R34 of Naruto characters
Internet Name: Ai-sama
Favorite Naruto Character/Love Interest: Gaara
Background (under the cut because it’s long):
Holly always liked to draw. But whereas other kids drew happy things like their families, Holly drew the spooky stuff like ghosts and zombies. She also had a strange fascination with skulls and liked to collect them. Other kids were freaked out by her and wanted nothing to do with her. So she kept to herself, doing her thing and wishing for a real friend.
She had a near death experience at age 8, when she went swimming with some cousins and an alligator took exception to her presence. Her family were able to free her from the gator and, when she returned from the hospital, served her fried alligator as a treat for surviving and gifted her an alligator skull. Gator is now her favorite food, and Gus the Christmas Gator (complete with Santa hat) guards the entrance to her room. She also has scars from the incident all along her right arm where the gator grabbed her.
She kept her hand in the arts as she went through school. She learned to paint as well as draw. She attempted to sculpt and nearly blew up the kiln. And most importantly, she did theatre, where she met a popular girl named Mariana (Holly onstage, Mariana making costumes and doing hair/makeup). The two were able to find common ground and become friends, and before long, Mariana was the only person Holly trusted to do her hair and makeup, which still persists to this day.
Holly still remained unpopular, but she didn’t care since she had finally made One Real Friend.
Holly didn’t discover anime until her mid teens, when Mariana (already a massive weeb) dragged her to a meeting of the school’s anime club. Here, she became intrigued after watching shows like Fruits Basket and Soul Eater, and began the long journey into fandom hell so many of us are familiar with. This is also where they met Evie.
She started drawing fanart of the anime she was watching at the time and posting it to DeviantArt, which started getting her attention. She hung out with Actual Friends, watching shows and watching each other do stuff (Evie was an athlete). She even started dating, getting her first boyfriend. For the first time in her life, she started to feel happy.
And then, each of them went through The Worst Time, a monumentally horrific incident in each of their lives that drastically altered everything. (Which I will wait to disclose until I post the actual story)
Holly’s happened last, when she was 17. And what happened utterly destroyed her. She no longer had the desire to create, or go to school, or to even get out of bed. She just hated everything. She wanted to stop existing.
And unfortunately, Holly’s parents and boyfriend were zero help. Her parents were the of the “therapy does nothing, just be happy” mindset, so she wasn’t able to get into therapy until much later when she could afford it on her own. And her boyfriend informed her that she was “damaged goods” and dumped her.
It took her a very long time, and a lot of love from Mariana and Evie (including the three moving in together), to be able to start existing again.
But one of the things that helped her recover, interestingly enough, was the show Naruto. Evie was playing through Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, and Holly happened to see her play through the section with the Five Kage Summit. She became intrigued, especially by Gaara, and wanted to know more. So the three started watching through Naruto together.
Holly started drawing again, this time drawing fanart of the Naruto characters. She tended to favor Gaara, as she not only loved his design, but also admired his journey out of the darkness, but happily drew anyone that struck her fancy.
She also discovered the R34 community and, after attempting to draw it herself, found that she really enjoyed it.
She got better and better. She started doing commissions and selling art, and decided that this was the career path she wanted to take. By the time of the story, Holly’s become known as Ai-sama, one of the most well known R34 artists in the community, and also a “love expert.” (Half of the questions she gets at her convention panels are about sex and romance rather than art)
And then she gets sucked into the Naruto world and gets smacked with the fact that the fictional characters she’s been drawing naked are now real.
Other fun stuff:
She gets cold very easily. You’ll rarely see her in shorts/tank tops even though she lives in Florida.
She worked at Disney World for a bit while she was getting started to help pay her bills.
Incidentally, she really hates the song “it’s a small world” and will consider murder if you start singing or playing it.
She doesn’t do theatre anymore (no time), but her playlists are full of Broadway music, and she can sing really well as well as play the piano and ukulele.
Can speak three languages: English, Spanish, and Japanese.
LOVES tabletop games. Her favorites are Betrayal at House on the Hill and Dead of Winter.
She is a DM for Evie and Mariana (and some other friends) in D&D.
She is deathly afraid of spiders.
She will have powers! (My OCs will all be overpowered and awesome OR ELSE) But I’m afraid I can’t reveal the nature of her powers until the actual story. :)

Top Ten Tuesday #456
Hi all, I hope you’ve all had a good week since I last did one of these. As I mentioned last week, I was at quite a bit of theatre and theatre related stuff again, on Wednesday I was at the matinee of new musical Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York) at the Kiln Theatre, which is a lovely little theatre/cinema in North London that I highly recommend if you’ve never been to it. The show was…
