BROCKHAMPTON - The Family / TM ALBUM REVIEWS
Tumblr media
Since Ameer Vann departed the group in 2018, BROCKHAMPTON have spent their albums after the SATURATION trilogy healing and expressing their anger as well, resulting in some of their best songs in the process. Their last album, 2021’s ROADRUNNER: NEW LIGHT, NEW MACHINE seemed like a new beginning for the group as it seemed like they had finally moved on from the Ameer drama. Earlier this year, they suddenly announced their “indefinite hiatus” and that they were cancelling their tour dates while also teasing a final album, which was what The Family was supposed to be. The Family was advertised as the final album until another album, TM was released the following day after The Family. If I remember correctly, BROCKHAMPTON’s contract with RCA was six albums in 3 years, so it seems like they only dropped these two albums to fulfill contractual obligations. Unfortunately, the music on both of these albums also sounds like it too. While The Family is labeled as a BROCKHAMPTON album, Kevin Abstract is the only person on the album, which is pretty disappointing. The best thing about BROCKHAMPTON albums has been the way different members bring their own unique ideas to a song and how they mesh with the other members and Kevin’s solo albums have never been that great either. Unfortunately, The Family is a painfully average album that really does not do much to end the group on a good note. Kevin is a good rapper but the rapping is not good enough to carry an entire album and the content is quite repetitive as his perspective of the group’s ending dominates pretty much the entire album’s lyrical content. The lyrics are pretty sappy and talk about how Kevin wishes the group would stay together. The problem is that the lyrics are fine but don’t make for very good songs. I also don’t love the vocal affects on his voice as his normal rapping voice is when he sounds the best. The best thing about The Family is the soulful production which BH hadn’t completely explored, especially on songs like RZA and The Ending. Though it is only 35 minutes, the album is tough to get through and seems like a rough ending for BROCKHAMPTON. Luckily, TM gives the group another shot at ending the group on a good note and sadly, the album still falls short. TM is different from The Family as it does feature from other group members but only barely. Bearface is nowhere to be found, Merlyn, Joba, and Dom only partially show up, Matt contributes more and Kevin still takes up a lot of the album. It is good to hear the other members but the album still sounds unfinished. It sounds like they had previously recorded a bunch of ideas that were supposed to be finished but remained drafts and the group tried finishing them and make an album out of what was left. The vocal affects on TM aren’t great, especially on a lot of the hooks like on ANIMAL and DUCT TAPE. However, what makes TM the significantly better album is the great production that aligns much more with the BROCKHAMPTON sound, as well as how the songs are structured well even if the verses do sound thrown together. Some songs sound more finished than others. NEW SHOES is a solid song as each member on the song contributed good verses for a fun song about moving on. Out of these two albums, the song MAN ON THE MOON from TM is easily the best song. It stands out instantly with the keyboard and bassline with the high-pitched vocals that jump into an uptempo pop groove that is perfectly complimented by a catchy hook. While I love the song, I wish there was more to it as the hook is pretty much the entire track. There should’ve been a verse or two by different group members. Speaking of good production, the song CRUCIFY ME has a pretty amazing instrumental. The piano is pretty gorgeous and definitely stands out within an album full of autotune. Kevin doesn’t pitch his voice, we get a Matt verse, Joba sings, and the piano at the end is pretty killer. There are some great moments on this album and the album is a pretty short listen but much like The Family, the lack of certain elements on different songs whether it’s a verse or chorus or missing members, the album still sounds like a contractual obligation. TM is definitely a better produced and more enjoyable listen. Though I do think that BROCKHAMPTON will eventually reunite in the future, they don’t end their discography on the best note but they do prove that their sound and lane in music was incredibly unique and they had such an amazing run in such a short amount of time.
