The Rev. Moon, the Unification Church, and the KCIA

The following is excerpted from "The Death Squads: Bringing in the Kingdom of God Through Terror, Torture and Death" (1996) by S.R. Shearer

In addition to the Americans, the Argentineans, the conservative Catholic Church, and various right-wing politicos, business leaders, and the military - with their attendant intelligence apparatus - there was a final component to the deadly mix which constituted the environment in which the Death Squads worked: specifically, the World Anti-Communist League (WACL) of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. WACL became involved in these operations as a result of its Korean connections - connections which also led back to Phoenix..

WACL is a Moonie front organization with strong ties to the KCIA (a creation of the American CIA); its ultimate allegiance is to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church.

Moon, of course, is no friend of democracy. He is a theocratic authoritarian who considers himself to be the Son of God and the new Messiah.[22] Moon believes that Jesus failed in His earthly mission to save man through His death on the cross; in addition, Moon claims that Jesus had sex with the women who followed Him.

As early as 1978 newspapers like the Washington Post began to pick up on the connections between Moon (WACL) and the Latin American Death Squads. For instance, one such article which appeared in the Post describing these connections carried the headline: "The Fascist Specter behind the World Anti-Red League."[23] In 1984 these connections were further explored in a series of columns by Jack Anderson.[24] Other publications carried additional articles detailing these connections and the Nazi components which comprised these elements.[25]

ORIGINS OF THE UNIFICATION CHURCH

In the light of all this, it might be fair to ask, what was it in the history of Moon and the Unification Church which would have led to such links between what ostensibly is supposed to be a religious organization and Nazi-oriented, right-wing Death Squads? The tides which produced these strange relationships originated in the very early 1950s in the murky right-wing political, religious and military currents which swept through Korea as a result of the Korean War; specifically in the wrath of Korean President Syngman Rhee and other right-wing elements in the Korean military who were furious at Truman and Eisenhower for not prosecuting the Korean War through to a successful conclusion - by which they meant the re-unification of the Korean Peninsula under President Rhee.

Right-wing elements in the United States were also enraged; many saw in the U.S. "surrender" the outlines of a sinister conspiracy. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin went so far as to blame the U.S. "surrender in Korea" on the machinations of a White House clique besotted by "bourbon and benzedrine;" in a rage, he actually called the President a "son-of-a-bitch" from the floor of the Senate. Senator William Jenner of Indiana, echoed McCarthy's rage; he too saw the silhouette of an ominous conspiracy; he went on to declare that "... this country today is in the hands of a secret inner coterie which is directed by agents of the Soviet Union." Both groups - right-wing Americans on the one hand, and right-wing Koreans on the other - felt they had been stymied in Korea by a vast, underground intrigue which had seized control of the United States and which was aiming at the destruction of the Free World; they perceived themselves as engaged in an immense struggle against an implacable foe which not only controlled Communist China and the Soviet Union, but powerful, secret elements in the West as well (i.e., the "Illuminist Conspiracy"). This view of things was only strengthened when Rhee was toppled in April of 1960 with Eisenhower's help.

It was this witches' brew of virulent right-wing politics which gave birth to the aberrant theology and politics of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church; Moon became as much a believer in the existence of the "world-wide communist (Illuminist) conspiracy" as had been Korean strongman Syngman Rhee and Senators Joseph McCarthy and William Jenner. Moon believed that the conspiracy could only be stopped by uniting the Western World under the banner of "Christianity" (by which he meant his own weird blend of New Age philosophy and aberrant religious teachings). Thus, Moon's movement was (is) as much a political movement as it is a religious movement; it is the result of a strange convergence of extreme right-wing politics (which stem not only out of sources in Korea, but also elements in the United States) and a bizarre mixture of fanatical, authoritarian religious beliefs.

There are, of course, many such movements throughout the world; but what has given Moon's organization such power is the relationship it enjoys with the government of South Korea - a relationship which endows Moon's religious empire with unlimited funds, business fronts, and access to sensitive intelligence matters - things which no other religious association in the world enjoys - outside of the Vatican; and it is precisely these things which have bought Moon entrance - if only through the back door - into America's Religious Right; the Religious Right in this country has seemingly found itself unable to resist the allure of Moon's money, the high-paying jobs he is able to offer through his various business fronts, and the excitement generated out of his intelligence (KCIA) contacts.

THE DEATH SQUADS AND THE REV. MOON

All this brings us back to Moon's involvement with Latin America's Death Squads; Moon's involvement originated as a result of his contacts with the KCIA, and the KCIA's involvement flowed out of Korea's connections with the Vietnam War. Korea was one of the very few U.S. allies which actively participated militarily in Vietnam alongside American forces. ROK (Republic of Korea) forces thus came into direct contact with Phoenix.

The KCIA was thrilled with Phoenix - and this favorable impression was passed on to WACL where the KCIA, as already indicated, exercised a great deal of influence; as a result, WACL soon became a purveyor of Phoenix-like operations throughout the world as an effective means of combating the spread of communism - so much so that in Latin America many of the Death Squad networks which were later established became synonymous with Moon and the Unification Church. Indeed, investigative reporter Russ Bellant writes that "... the ... Death Squad network{26} (in many of the various Latin American countries) is (in instance after instance) also the Latin American branch of Moon's World Anti-Communist League (WACL)."[27] For example, in Argentina, the Death Squads and WACL were so closely identified that in Buenos Aires the various Death Squad cadres constituted in fact the main Argentine branch of WACL.[28] These kinds of connections between the Death Squads and the Unification Church were repeated throughout Central and South America. So closely and effectively did Moon and the Death Squads cooperate in Latin America that they were actually responsible - along with Nazi fugitive Klaus Barbie - in helping to establish a Nazi-style state in Bolivia in 1982.[29] And what about the individuals who constitute the membership of these organizations? - they have been variously described as a mix of Hitler collaborators, anti-Semites, right-wing politicos, rich businessmen, etc. - all of whom hold to an unshakable belief in a world-wide conspiracy directed against capitalism and Christianity[30] - the same kind of ideological mix which - to a large degree - can be found in the CNP (the principle coordinating agency bringing together members of the Religious Right with members of the political right and the business right) today.

Moonies Support Vigilante Violence in the Philippines Around 1986/1987

Human Rights Group Confirms Vigilante Reports In mid-May, an international fact-finding team headed by former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark visited the Philippines to look into the existence and activities of armed vigilantes. The team, composed mainly of human rights advocates, interviewed people in Luzon, Mindanao, Cebu, and Negros. Its findings included: (1) a rapidly growing vigilante movement that has killed, tortured, threatened, or otherwise harassed civilians who are mostly poor farmers, workers, and other individuals who have advocated land reform, wage increases for workers, and withdrawal of the US bases; (2) Philippine military and civilian officials are endorsing and even arming some of these vigilante groups; (3) foreign organizations like the Unification Church-affiliated associations for the Unification of the Societies of the Americas, the WACL, and the World Anti-Communist Crusade, are actively engaged in organizing the movement; and (4) clear evidence of sophisticated methods of counterinsurgency and "low-intensity conflict" (LIC) operating in the Philippines, including direct military action done by Philippine forces with US technical assistance.

One of the team members was Ralph McGehee, a former CIA agent in Asia who wrote a book, Deadly Deceits, about his 25 years with the agency. He had served as a special liaison officer of the Vietnam Special Forces, which were really assassination squads assigned to liquidate communists in the villages. McGehee noticed "direct parallels" between the Vietnam experience and the current Philippine situation. Among these parallels are the "search and destroy" operations; "free-fire zones," and forcing rural people into the population centers to deny the insurgents a mass base. The Alsa Masa and NAKASAKA had counterparts in the Vietnamese reconnaissance units.

McGehee also saw the possibility that a ''version of the CIA's Phoenix Program - a coordinated military, police, and civilian effort to destroy Vietnamese revolutionary forces through assassination squads trained by special forces with the CIA - is now being employed in the country." He pointed out that Lt. Col. Calida, the so-called "godfather" of Alsa Masa had undergone training in 1971-72 at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, considered the counterinsurgency training center in the US. McGehee further noted that the mushrooming of anti-Communist literature was a normal component of CIA "media operations." Calida denied McGehee's allegations.

These observations on possible CIA involvement in Philippine affairs in the post-Marcos period are not far-fetched. At the height of the Huk movement in the fifties, CIA operative Edward Lansdale put together a plan combining military action, economic benefits, and political strategy to defeat the insurgency with the help of Philippine officials like Ramon Magsaysay. More recently, the CIA knew of the corrupt activities of Marcos as early as 1969 and his plan to declare martial law in 1972. Since Aquino assumed power, Manila media circles have speculated on the presence of about 115 CIA agents in the Philippines. The hard evidence, of course, cannot be produced, but it would strain credulity to believe that there is no CIA activity in the country today. Trained in covert action and disinformation, CIA officers are not about to give away their agency secrets. Like McGehee, they get to tell what they did in some of these countries after they retire. Religion and Politics This discussion of the emergence of right-wing fanaticism in the Philippines would not be complete without mentioning the corresponding phenomenal rise of religious fundamentalism in many parts of the country today. Banners announcing prayer meetings, talk shows, workshops, and seminars by such fundamentalist sects like Campus Crusade for Christ, 700 Club, Assemblies of God, World Vision International, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and the much-talked about CAUSA, were commonplace during the year, particularly in Metro Manila and the bigger cities. The Unification Church even sponsored a visit to the Philippines in August of Msgr. Bismark Carballo, a Nicaraguan priest exiled by the Sandinistas for his support of the US-backed "contras." The most visible fundamentalist preachers like Billy Graham, Jerry Falwell, Jimmy Swaggart and Pat Robertson have either visited the Philippines or have regular telecasts in the country. The Carballo visit inspired a Maryknoll cleric, Fr. Thomas Marti, who has long worked in the Philippines, to research the connections between some of these fundamentalist groups and the right-wing networks in the U.S. Marti found that the Reagan administration sought the help of CAUSA International to support US policy in Nicaragua. It might be mentioned that the Moonies and CAUSA have conducted expense-paid seminars and conferences in Washington, D.C.; Manila and other places, inviting well-known names in academic, religious and political circles. Among the CAUSA's top brass are Cleon Skousen, a Mormon Church leader, Douglas MacArthur II, and Bo Hi Pak, the chairman who has acknowledged CIA funding. This is just another form of counter-insurgency, but it tries to minimize direct military intervention in favor of small "grassroots" efforts combining socio-economic, civic action, psychological & political objective. It seems, Marti concludes, that the combination of the political and religious right is intent on fomenting a "Red scare" in the Philippines, as they have done in Latin America, to undermine the earlier efforts of the Aquino government to come to a negotiated settlement with the NDF/CPP/NPA. Noticeable itself is the government's drift to the right and Aquino herself, while cautioning against unrestrained vigilante activities, has not discouraged them. In a visit to Davao City, which some of her supporters considered a "misjudgment," Aquino told members of the Alsa Masa "they were a model in the battle against the 18-year communist insurgency.” RELATED: - Moonies demanded $2,000 from Koreans who wanted to have Filipinas as “housemaids and sex partners.” - In 1985 the Washington Times sponsored a fund for the Contras who committed atrocities, and trafficked drugs to the US - CounterSpy: Moonies Move on Honduras (1983) - One Account of Being Trafficked into Prostitution Through UC “Blessing” - Human trafficking is despicable. You blinked very fast. Your thoughts were all over the place. Keeping your gaze on the KCIA badge you took a deep breath and mumbled “Yea… it does look like we need to talk…” trying to gather yourself, you turned to face the kind eyed man.

This was the moment he should start explaining, because you sure as hell had no idea what the actual fuck was going on.

He let out a long, quiet sigh, keeping his eyes on the road. “So… I am well aware you normally would not have anything to do with a gang, if it wasn’t for your reckless friend…” he started. “But… our target isn’t really the whole group. I mean yea, they are dangerous, cause some havoc but… they are also a well know danger… they keep the product they sell clean and such… yes it is bad, but how to say it? A evil you know is better than anything unknown and out of control right?”.

You tried to follow his logic, one questing popping into your head - then why was he even there? As if reading your mind he explained “We are fishing for the police… we have known the department has gotten very dirty in the recent years… and we are collecting enough evidence to be sure to take that scum down…” he turned his eyes to the road again waiting for you to slowly take in the information he has dropped on you.

You shake your head a bit and then look up as if asking the universe why the fuck this is all happening. “So… let me guess… my fiancé happens to be on the list…”. Jimin sighed and slowly nodded his head, clicking his tongue he looked at you for a second. “Listen… I know this is all a lot to take in… especially that your fiancé is an absolute dick… but… I assume you’d have nothing against putting his ass behind bars right?”.

You look at the man sitting next to you and try to think of an answer. In all honesty you would gladly have Hobi suffer since you found out not only is he dirty but also a cheater. The fact you slept with Agust-D did not seem like proper justice for the fact that asshole ruined all those years of your life. But having him locked up seemed like some kind of karma.

“Yea… I would not mind that at all…” you paused for a while and then asked “So… let me take a guess. You would love to have a spy in me huh?”. Jimin cleared his throat quietly, clearly not expecting you to be this blunt. “I won’t lie… it would probably make things easier… I believe you could fish out some important intel for us…”

Without much hesitation you say “Ok. Count me in then, as long as me and my friend Jungkook are not dragged into whatever consequences this shitshow brings…” the hazy eyed man slightly looks at you and nods “Of course… you will be my informant so I will make sure your demands are met…” you roll your eyes a bit not enjoying the fact once again you have been put in a peculiar spot.

You asked to be dropped off a couple of blocks before your building. Your neighborhood was safe enough for you to walk back and you sure as hell would not wan’t Hoseok seeing you get dropped off by Jimin.

You will have to lie, pretend and play games with Hobi. It was not something you ever would see yourself doing but given the circumstances, you did not have many options in order to receive some sort of justice for yourself. The worst part being that you had to pretend you have no idea about what he did and that you are still oh so blindly in love with him, when in reality all you wanted is to beat him into a pulp for wasting all those important years of your life.

Walking in slowly into your apartment you gently closed the doors hoping that if your fiancé was there you would not wake him up. Looking around you saw his jacket and sighed. Luck was not on your side. It seemed that you were gonna have to deal with his company sooner then later.

You made your way passed the opened bedroom doors, making sure to be quiet and to get you the chance to sleep on the couch, but no, you had to be shit outta luck. “Y/N? Hun? That you?” you swore in your head and barely controlled your impulse to punch the wall. Silently clearing your throat you said “Yea… it’s me… I went out with Kookie and some other coworkers… since you said you would be home late again…” you lied threw your teeth.

A sound of the bed covers rustling hit your ears. You knew he was getting up, so you put your best pretend happy tipsy face on. Right then you saw him stand in the door and lean on the frame with a slightly sleepy face. He smiled at you and came up taking your hand in his. “Mmm… I’m sorry I am having to work so much lately babe…” you nodded your head afraid that if you spoke that moment he would pick up your pure rage.

After a second you gathered yourself “It’s fine, we both have jobs that can occupy us at times…” wrapping his arms around you he kissed your shoulder “What did I do to deserve such a woman?” you forced a giggle. “Can I make it up to you Y/N? Hmmm?” he hummed in a low voice pulling at your waistband. You laughed lightly and gave him a peck in the nose saying “we can discuss that after I take a shower and you make breakfast.”

He mumbled slightly disappointed but made his way to the kitchen, you on the other hand got into the bathroom. You stood there looking at your reflection in the big mirror questioning all your life decisions and if you should have ever moved to Korea. You turned on the water for it to warm up. You needed a hot shower to was off all the strain from your muscles.

Suddenly your phone rang causing you to jump up. Looking at the screen you could see a no caller ID show up. Normally you would ignore such a call but something in you gave you a hunch. Picking up the phone you quietly answered. “Hello?” you heard a deep sigh on the other side of the line and then the well know gravely voice “Didn’t take you would be the type to sneak out at dawn?” your heart clenched and then started beating like crazy. You could feel your body getting tense.

“And I wouldn’t think you’d be the type to be bothered by such a thing… I would think you’d appreciate it…” he chuckled, you could almost see him shaking his head in amusement “Nah… I was thinking of round two for breakfast…” you sigh grabbing the tip of your nose. This was all one big mess. “I have a fiancé…” you muttered hoping this would salve it and make him cancel the call, but instead he laughed loudly “Oh… I know you do and I ain’t bothered babe, because I know now when he fucks you, you’ll be thinking of me and all I can do to you”. His words rendered you speechless “Mmm just what I thought. You’ll be coming back for more Y/N and oh I will give it to you…” and at that he ended the call.

Standing there and looking at your cellphone you were trying collect yourself. This fucking cocky bastard was so sure you’d be coming back to him. “You wish… we will see who’s left begging…”

From the 1960s to late 1980s, the Unification Church was stridently anti-communist. More than 300,000 South Korean troops were sent to support American forces defending South Vietnam and Moon was a vocal supporter of the Vietnam War. His position was fully shared throughout the war by all mainstream Protestant churches in South Korea. At home, critics of the South Korean military deployment risked detention and torture by the KCIA, and massacres by Korean troops in Vietnam were covered up.[...]

Moon also sponsored the 1970 Tokyo meeting of the World Anti-Communist League, with which the IFVOC and Shokyo Rengo were affiliated. The WACL grew out of the Asian People’s Anti-Communist League, formed in 1954, at the request of South Korea’s Rhee Syngman and Taiwan’s Chiang Kai-shek, to fight communism in Asia after the end of the Korean War. The WACL, established in Taiwan in 1966, expanded the scope of anti-communist activity onto a global stage. In the 1970s, the European division of WACL became notorious for a large influx of fascist groups, especially after British white supremacist Roger Pearson took over as WACL chairman in 1978. Geoffrey Stewart-Smith, who headed the League’s British chapter, resigned in protest, describing the WACL as “largely a collection of Nazis, Fascists, anti-Semites, sellers of forgeries, vicious racialists, and corrupt self-seekers.”

Unification Church expansion in the United States began after Moon moved there with his rapidly growing family in the early 1970s, settling in a sprawling country estate in Tarrytown, in the Hudson Valley outside New York City. His religion appealed to young people seeking a communal ethos but turned off by the drugs and free love of the hippie counterculture. Converts hawked flowers and candles at airports and street corners, and with money also pouring in from Japan, the Unification Church bought the New Yorker Hotel in Manhattan, a seafood operation said to supply half of the sushi sold in the United States, a cable TV network, a recording studio, and a shipbuilding firm.[...]

When Maj. Gen. John Singlaub, chief of staff of U.S. forces in Korea, and a former field officer of the CIA, criticised the troop drawdown [from Korea] in an interview with the Washington Post, he was relieved from duty and later resigned from the military. In 1981, Singlaub founded the U.S. chapter of the WACL, the United States Council for World Freedom.

HUNT, un thriller survolté réalisé par la star de Squid Game.

Le mercredi 10 avril, Accès au cinéma invisible vous donne rendez-vous à Pol-n pour découvrir le film sud-coréen Hunt (2022), 2h05.

Sélectionné en Séance de minuit lors du festival de Cannes 2022, Hunt est le premier long-métrage réalisé par Lee Jung-jae. Acteur confirmé dans son pays, Lee Jung-jae accède à une renommée internationale suite au succès retentissant de la série Squid Game en 2021 dans laquelle il interprète le personnage principal, Seong Gi-hun, alias n°456.

Pour son passage derrière la caméra, le cinéaste s’empare de l’histoire de la Corée du Sud qu’il revisite à la manière d’un thriller musclé mené tambour battant.

Aux débuts des années 1980, le dictateur sud-coréen Park Chung Hee est assassiné par les services secrets, la KCIA, avec l’aide des États-Unis. Pour autant, le pouvoir reste aux mains de l’armée malgré les aspirations démocratiques de la population. Cherchant à profiter de la situation, la Corée du Nord parvient à infiltrer les services secrets de son voisin. Park Pyeong-Ho (Lee Jung-jae) et Kim Jung-Do (Jeong Woo-seong), deux hauts responsables de la sécurité sud-coréenne sont chargés de traquer la taupe et ne tardent pas à se soupçonner mutuellement...

S’inscrivant dans la lignée des thrillers d’espionnages historiques sortis récemment comme L'Homme du président (2020) ou The Spy Gone North (2018), Hunt n’est pas un documentaire ou un reconstitution fidèle à la réalité historique mais bien un film de genre dans lequel Lee Jung-jae privilégie avant tout le spectacle. Espionnage oblige, jeu de dupes et ambiances paranoïaques sont de la partie mais le cinéaste fait également preuve d’un vrai talent pour mettre en scène l’action, notamment des séquences de fusillades qui raviront les fans de Heat et de Michael Mann.

On the Unification Church in Japan; extract from Moonwebs: Journey Into the Mind of a Cult by Josh Freed, published in 1980

Sun Myung Moon was hoping the mobilization of all the Japanese members to support the event would elevate his status in the organization. When he was not crowned king of WACL, he somewhat distanced himself from WACL for a number of years. He later got more involved with WACL when he saw opportunities for himself through the CAUSA model.

One facet of Moon’s political empire was not even touched upon by the Fraser Committee—the Japanese connection which some Moon-watchers believe to be more important than even the link with Korea. Moon’s Japanese Church, the Genri Undo, is an influential movement tied to some of the most powerful ultra-right nationalist forces in Asia.

Moon’s three principal backers in the Orient are Ryoichi Sasagawa, Nobusuke Kishi and Yoshio Kodama—post war billionaires and political forces who share a dream of restoring the Emperor and Japan to their former glory. Some observers believe they are the real power behind Moon.

Sasagawa is the godfather of the Japanese underworld and the founder of the Japanese kamikaze pilot squads. He was imprisoned briefly as a Class A war criminal after the war, then released to become a billionaire political power in Indonesia and Cambodia. He actively supports the Unification Church in Japan, and is described by Bo Hi Pak as a “true humanitarian and patriot”, by Moon as “very close to Master”.

Sasagawa was also at the center of the old China Lobby—a powerful combination of Asian dictators, American right-wing politicians and international businessmen who influenced U.S. policy in the Pacific after World War II. In the 1960’s Sasagawa set up the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), currently the major alliance of right-wing forces in the world. Moon’s Japanese Church is a member of the WACL, and sponsored its 1970 annual conference. Moon claims his Church raised $1.4 million in flower sales and helped finance the “best WACL conference ever”.

The man in charge of promoting that conference was Nobusuke Kishi another active backer of the Japan Unification Church, a former prime minister of Japan, and president of its ruling party. At the 1970 WACL meeting, Kishi organized a grand welcoming banquet for Moon when he arrived in Japan. According to Bo Hi Pak, both Kishi and Sasagawa help the Unification Church by “encouraging young people through their position as elder statesmen. They open doors, issue statements and attend rallies, and they testify to other important Japanese.”

The third member of this right-wing triumvirate, Yoshio Kodama, has been described by the New York Times as “one of the most powerful men in the Orient”. He recently became notorious for his role in the Lockheed pay-off scandal involving the Japanese government.

Kodama is considered one of the kingpins of Japanese politics, and has had a hand in selecting several prime ministers. He is not an active Moon backer, but acted as an advisor to Kishi and the Moonies during the 1970 WACL meeting. Moon’s links with Kodama, Kishi and Sasagawa have raised speculation that Japan is the source of his early funding; Harpers magazine even speculated that his seed money may have come through the Lockheed pay-offs, raising the possibility that Moon began his growth with American corporate funds.

Moon has at least two other interesting links in Japan. One is with recently defeated prime minister Takeo Fukuda, who attended a banquet in Moon’s honor in 1974, accompanied by two cabinet ministers. When questioned in the Japanese Diet, Fukuda replied: “He (Moon) is a very splendid man, and his philosophy has common parts with my own—namely cooperation and unity. So I was very impressed by him.”

Moon is also close to Japan’s director of the environment, Shintaro Ishihara, who received enormous door-to-door support from the Moonies in the 1976 elections. Shortly after, Ishihara attended a Church dinner and announced: “I received great help from your people…in my election campaign. I had no idea there were such fine young people in present day Japan.”

These links with some of the most powerful people in the Orient make many Moon watchers believe that Moon is more than a puppet for the Korean Government. According to Andrew Ross, a West Coast journalist who broke many of Moon’s Korean connections long before the Fraser Committee. “Moon is right at the center of a constellation of world-wide right-wing forces that is very powerful…and very frightening.”

How powerful is the Church today? Since the outset of the Fraser Committee, the South Korean Government has gone to great lengths to disassociate itself from Moon and the Church. It has cancelled the passports of the Little Angels ballet troupe and has charged the president of Moon’s ginseng tea company with $6 million in tax evasion. (He escaped to Japan.)

The Church cites these difficulties as proof that it has no links with South Korea, while other critics have said it certainly spells the end of any “special relationship” Moon has enjoyed with the South Korean Government.

The Fraser committee found evidence, however, that as late as 1978 the Church continued to have “significant support” from South Korean authorities. The committee pointed out that in that year a Moon industry was awarded contracts as a chief weapons supplier for the Korean Government. They put particular emphasis on a strange incident that occurred in late 1977: the American weapons firm Colt Industries sent a cable to the South Korean government suggesting an arms deal. Several weeks later Colt officials received a call from Moon’s Tong-Il manufacturing plant. Moon’s representatives then told Colt officials they would work out the deal for South Korea. They said the Korean government was aware of their actions and supported them, but would deny it if it came out in public.

The subcommittee recalled Moon’s professed goals, including the formation of a “Unification Crusade Army”, and concluded its report on this note:

“Under the circumstances, the subcommittee believes it is in the interests of the United States to know what control Moon and his followers have over instruments of war and to what extent they are in a position to influence Korean defence policies.”

The assassination of South Korean president Park in late 1979 throws Moon’s future status in Korea into question. No one can say whether the new government of Choi Kyu-Hah will continue to favor Moon or simply consider him a nuisance. However, it is worth noting that one of the most powerful men in the new government, so powerful that he was considered a leading candidate to become president, is Kim Chong-Pil; the man who met secretly with the Unification Church in San Francisco in 1961 and later became the honorary chairman of the KCFF.

In America too there are strong indications that Moon is far from dead. His financial investments continue to grow rapidly in fishing, film, newspaper and real estate, and his annual science conference continues to attract distinguished academics the world over. In November 1979, the ICUS science conference was held in Los Angeles and drew a full house.

Moon is again living in the United States after several months out of the country during the term of a subpoena by the Fraser Committee, and he is planning a mass wedding of two thousand couples in the United States sometime in 1980. [The mass wedding happened at Madison Square Gardens in July 1982.] He was also hoping to plan a giant “March on Moscow” in 1980—a top secret mission in which troops of Moonies would sweep down on the Russian Olympics in the guise of marching bands, with Divine Principles and bibles concealed in their drums.

Perhaps the most telling example of the Moonies’ still-flourishing power was displayed against the man who has been most effective in exposing them—Rep. Donald Fraser.

In the 1978 primaries, the Moonies campaigned actively against Fraser in his home state of Minnesota. As the Fraser Committee noted, all aspects of the Moon organization were synchronized against him—political, economic and religious. Anti-Fraser brochures were printed up by Moon’s publishing company; documentaries were made of the Fraser hearings by Moon film crews for airing in Korea; articles derogating Fraser and making Bo Hi Pak a martyr were run in News World; and individual Church members campaigned against Fraser in the street.

The results were effective. On October 7, about a month before the release of his committee’s final report, Donald Fraser was narrowly defeated in his bid to become the Democratic candidate for the Senate.

Sun Myung Moon had proved a more powerful opponent than even Fraser could deal with.

10/1は都民の日。無料で美術館という選択肢もありましたが、映画の日でもあるので韓国映画『ハント』を観てきました。

1980年代の史実をもとにしたフィクション映画で、KCIAを前身とした国家安全企画部の二人の次長が、組織に潜り込んでいる北のスパイを見つけるようそれぞれ命令を受け…という話。

時間軸としては、『KCIA 南山の部長たち』の後。『KCIA…』では部長が1979年に大統領を暗殺するのですが、この部長を逮捕したのが全斗煥。『ハント』は全斗煥が大統領になっている時代です。

2000年に日本でも公開され大ヒットした『シュリ』もそうですが、『KCIA…』『ハント』も、半島が北と南に分かれてしまったという歴史があるからこそ生まれた作品で、観ていて非常に考えさせられました。

誰がスパイなのか？という単純な話ではなく、内容の重さと共に映画としてのアクション、次長達の格好良さも考えられているこの映画、次長の一人を演じるイ・ジョンジェ氏が脚本を手掛け、初めて監督した作品とのことで、とても驚きました。

次回監督作もあるならぜひ観たいと思います！

Since Kim monster in Seoul nobody was safe including JP and my mother's husband lost money from them because he came from North Korea at war time and fact is this he was not only one. So many from North Korean who becam South Korean civilian were lost their property in the name of red spy and use President name and they mocked to joy about last day he drunk whiskey but many civilians are had whiskey at home by Mije ajumma lol. We had Jonny walker back, Cognac, Chivas regal.. in living room by Mije Ajumma lol. When president fie his wach was chep Seiko somebody gave him but Seoul's middle class daughter wach was Gucci, my wach was a Gucci and second Brad new wach too lol and my mother gave me her gift was diamond bracelet and earrings it was popular to Seoul's mother for daughter at that time around me high school graduation gift and I grew up middlclass in Seoul and my mother gave her gift leather rock and roll jacket and poetry book when I went to middle school. Korean mother's put money together and buy things and traveling was very popular at that time in Seoul, they did piano, diamond everthing and their helthy friendships were on- going thing in their life time It call Chinmok Gye lol. And my father was a good military man and he liked 4 star General Jeong, Seunghwa. One day Kim, Jiha caught and came to my father he was a handsome and smart student so my father thought he had to servive and talked president Park for save this young student for country so they hidden original story for save him, so I think somebody copied useing his name because adults thought he was a very hansome and smart young student for country's future and someday he do good for country. After he used by his people came again and there was no president or my father lol. That time military was ruined by one psycophs and he got all good people's stars himself and went to Prsident but First Lady knew he wasn't a good guy. He was a single creature and stars thief.

My father went to financial department and president and my father were not in this world, they gone with original story. They couldn't have 5 thefts original story because that original story was not in this world anymore lol. My father showed up my dream he is well in pradise and presidant Park asked to me red tea so I sad yes but I never saw him in my life anyway I plugged pot but he disappeared so I woke up, maybe my big mouth know some of his story? He can't be a Korean.

He got in Bluehouse because Kim, Shinjo incident but true was he is not a person who caught Kim, Shinjo but he created Hongeun neighborhood accident like 5,18 because Korean military were in mountain looked for spy and caught but Houngen neighborhood got shot by helicopter and no military knew why civilians got attacked by military? Who ordered that? It is like 5,18 in Jeolla province and I hate to hear about old general were stupid lol. Old general made korean west point and professor with bachelor to master degrees and they went USA too. So new military group's mind set is wrong and they became one destroyed system for them. They became politicians not military mind. This was the problem too. Who wrote about old military their brain is not nomal than why most new military people's background were so shaby? So I think new military becamevonevwas Kim, Shinjo incident and they worked everywhere and started plan for 10 years <- I think so android military trust system but new group made problems so old couldn't move up and single man kim, Jaegyu made their world It call Damhap in korean and became shaby time in Korea lol so I leaved Korea. I like painting and look beautiful thing for my world but Korea was so shaby at that time to me. How come teacher had to under them or Norway to moved up because knew JP or else and creat some incidents for new militarie's teacher? And I think old military people's family background was better from jokbo(family tree) to other circumstances, our family tree has Joseon dynasty prime persons( yeongeujeongs wueujengs) and 70s top class people. To me it was Yangban vs Under Cheonmin it was to shaby and my father's nose was high and strait with perfect lips lol

Radio of Free Asia, sometimes called Radio Free Asia, was an anti-Communist radio station created by the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation which broadcast from Seoul into North Korea, China, and Vietnam.[1][2][3] In a congressional hearing, General Coulter, then President of the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation, declared Radio of Free Asia the principal project of the foundation.[4] It operated from 1966 to early 1970s.

The Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation (KFF) was first organized in Washington, D.C. in 1964 with the goal of "containing communism" in Asia.[1] The Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) put pressure on the KFF to support a project to broadcast anti-communist propaganda into nearby Asian communist states. The intention was to raise money for the project from the US. [5]

Radio of Free Asia (ROFA), as the radio station became known, began broadcasting from Seoul on 15 August 1966.[1][5] The first broadcast featured a taped message from Soong Mei-ling [wife of Chiang Kai-Shek].[3]

ROFA formally had an American chief but it's two directors of operations were KCIA operatives who worked under Kim Jong-Pil. The station was given free access to South Korean government facilities with broadcasts monitored by the KCIA's psychological warfare unit.[5] The US Justice Department later suggested the station was “acting under the direction of and control of the Korean Government”.[6]

Although mainly funded through private donations, it had the financial support of several elected officials before and after broadcasts began, including Senator Bob Dole and Presidents Truman and Eisenhower.[7] South Korean President Park Chung-Hee sent letters to 60,000 prominent Americans asking for contributions to the project.[6] Millions of dollars were raised for Radio of Free Asia through direct mail requests to American citizens, soliciting funds both by claiming they would finance the broadcasts and that they would aid starving children in Asia.[7]

In 1971, US government agencies, including the Justice Department, began investigating the station for alleged violation of the Foreign Agent Registration Act.[8][6] The broadcaster's status as a foreign private foundation was called into question due to the free air time provided by the South Korean government on its national network. Bo Hi Pak secured the services of former CIA Deputy Director of Intelligence Robert Amory Jr. for legal assistance to defend against these charges. At the time Amory was employed by the Thomas Corcoran law firm and was a legal counsellor to the CIA. The investigation was terminated in 1972 and soon after the station stopped broadcasting from Seoul.[6][8]

A newly disclosed Justice Department investigatior into organizations and persons connecter with the controversial Rev, Shn Myung Moon has raised the possibility that American citizens are illegally working on behalf of the South Korean Government.[...]

The Federal officials familiar with the inquiry were careful to assert that Mr. Moon himself and his Unification Church were not being investigated, because Constitutional questions of freedom of religion might be raised. Instead, the inquiry is focusing on organizations associated with the church.[...]

The Federal sources indicated that among the organizations under scrutiny were the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation, the Freedom Leadership Foundation, headed by Neil A. Salonen, the International Federation for Victory Over Communism, and the Little Angels of Korea, a children's singing group that tours overseas.[...]

This investigation is one element in broad inquiry that includes allegations that Park Tong Sun, a Korean businessman, and others bribed Congressmen and tried illegally to influence American policy. it also includes an investigation of whether officers of the K.C.1.A. coerced and violated the civil rights of Koreans living in America and Korean‐American citizens.

The South Korean Government, according to both Korean and American officials, has long been eager to improve the image of President Park Chung Hee and his administration. South Korea's economic development, and therefore some of its political stability, depends heavily on trade and financial help from the United States.[...]

Among the earliest missions with that objective was that of the Korean Cultural and Freedom Foundation, founded in 1964. Its head, Pak Bo Hi, joined it in early 1965, shortly after he resigned from the South Korean Arm”.[...]

Korean intelligence sources said that Mr. Pak is the K.C.1.A.'s channel to Mr. Moon, A Korean with access to K.C.I.A. reports said that “Pak Bo Hi is a very important man because he made Sun Myung Moon famous. It's all his idea.”
