The Rev. Moon, the Unification Church, and the KCIA
The following is excerpted from "The Death Squads: Bringing in the Kingdom of God Through Terror, Torture and Death" (1996) by S.R. Shearer
Tumblr media
In addition to the Americans, the Argentineans, the conservative Catholic Church, and various right-wing politicos, business leaders, and the military - with their attendant intelligence apparatus - there was a final component to the deadly mix which constituted the environment in which the Death Squads worked: specifically, the World Anti-Communist League (WACL) of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon. WACL became involved in these operations as a result of its Korean connections - connections which also led back to Phoenix..
WACL is a Moonie front organization with strong ties to the KCIA (a creation of the American CIA); its ultimate allegiance is to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church.
Moon, of course, is no friend of democracy. He is a theocratic authoritarian who considers himself to be the Son of God and the new Messiah.[22] Moon believes that Jesus failed in His earthly mission to save man through His death on the cross; in addition, Moon claims that Jesus had sex with the women who followed Him.
As early as 1978 newspapers like the Washington Post began to pick up on the connections between Moon (WACL) and the Latin American Death Squads. For instance, one such article which appeared in the Post describing these connections carried the headline: "The Fascist Specter behind the World Anti-Red League."[23] In 1984 these connections were further explored in a series of columns by Jack Anderson.[24] Other publications carried additional articles detailing these connections and the Nazi components which comprised these elements.[25]
ORIGINS OF THE UNIFICATION CHURCH
In the light of all this, it might be fair to ask, what was it in the history of Moon and the Unification Church which would have led to such links between what ostensibly is supposed to be a religious organization and Nazi-oriented, right-wing Death Squads? The tides which produced these strange relationships originated in the very early 1950s in the murky right-wing political, religious and military currents which swept through Korea as a result of the Korean War; specifically in the wrath of Korean President Syngman Rhee and other right-wing elements in the Korean military who were furious at Truman and Eisenhower for not prosecuting the Korean War through to a successful conclusion - by which they meant the re-unification of the Korean Peninsula under President Rhee.
Right-wing elements in the United States were also enraged; many saw in the U.S. "surrender" the outlines of a sinister conspiracy. Senator Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin went so far as to blame the U.S. "surrender in Korea" on the machinations of a White House clique besotted by "bourbon and benzedrine;" in a rage, he actually called the President a "son-of-a-bitch" from the floor of the Senate. Senator William Jenner of Indiana, echoed McCarthy's rage; he too saw the silhouette of an ominous conspiracy; he went on to declare that "... this country today is in the hands of a secret inner coterie which is directed by agents of the Soviet Union." Both groups - right-wing Americans on the one hand, and right-wing Koreans on the other - felt they had been stymied in Korea by a vast, underground intrigue which had seized control of the United States and which was aiming at the destruction of the Free World; they perceived themselves as engaged in an immense struggle against an implacable foe which not only controlled Communist China and the Soviet Union, but powerful, secret elements in the West as well (i.e., the "Illuminist Conspiracy"). This view of things was only strengthened when Rhee was toppled in April of 1960 with Eisenhower's help.
It was this witches' brew of virulent right-wing politics which gave birth to the aberrant theology and politics of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon and the Unification Church; Moon became as much a believer in the existence of the "world-wide communist (Illuminist) conspiracy" as had been Korean strongman Syngman Rhee and Senators Joseph McCarthy and William Jenner. Moon believed that the conspiracy could only be stopped by uniting the Western World under the banner of "Christianity" (by which he meant his own weird blend of New Age philosophy and aberrant religious teachings). Thus, Moon's movement was (is) as much a political movement as it is a religious movement; it is the result of a strange convergence of extreme right-wing politics (which stem not only out of sources in Korea, but also elements in the United States) and a bizarre mixture of fanatical, authoritarian religious beliefs.
There are, of course, many such movements throughout the world; but what has given Moon's organization such power is the relationship it enjoys with the government of South Korea - a relationship which endows Moon's religious empire with unlimited funds, business fronts, and access to sensitive intelligence matters - things which no other religious association in the world enjoys - outside of the Vatican; and it is precisely these things which have bought Moon entrance - if only through the back door - into America's Religious Right; the Religious Right in this country has seemingly found itself unable to resist the allure of Moon's money, the high-paying jobs he is able to offer through his various business fronts, and the excitement generated out of his intelligence (KCIA) contacts.
THE DEATH SQUADS AND THE REV. MOON
All this brings us back to Moon's involvement with Latin America's Death Squads; Moon's involvement originated as a result of his contacts with the KCIA, and the KCIA's involvement flowed out of Korea's connections with the Vietnam War. Korea was one of the very few U.S. allies which actively participated militarily in Vietnam alongside American forces. ROK (Republic of Korea) forces thus came into direct contact with Phoenix.
The KCIA was thrilled with Phoenix - and this favorable impression was passed on to WACL where the KCIA, as already indicated, exercised a great deal of influence; as a result, WACL soon became a purveyor of Phoenix-like operations throughout the world as an effective means of combating the spread of communism - so much so that in Latin America many of the Death Squad networks which were later established became synonymous with Moon and the Unification Church. Indeed, investigative reporter Russ Bellant writes that "... the ... Death Squad network{26} (in many of the various Latin American countries) is (in instance after instance) also the Latin American branch of Moon's World Anti-Communist League (WACL)."[27] For example, in Argentina, the Death Squads and WACL were so closely identified that in Buenos Aires the various Death Squad cadres constituted in fact the main Argentine branch of WACL.[28] These kinds of connections between the Death Squads and the Unification Church were repeated throughout Central and South America. So closely and effectively did Moon and the Death Squads cooperate in Latin America that they were actually responsible - along with Nazi fugitive Klaus Barbie - in helping to establish a Nazi-style state in Bolivia in 1982.[29] And what about the individuals who constitute the membership of these organizations? - they have been variously described as a mix of Hitler collaborators, anti-Semites, right-wing politicos, rich businessmen, etc. - all of whom hold to an unshakable belief in a world-wide conspiracy directed against capitalism and Christianity[30] - the same kind of ideological mix which - to a large degree - can be found in the CNP (the principle coordinating agency bringing together members of the Religious Right with members of the political right and the business right) today.

CIA, Moonies Cooperate in Sandinista War
Tumblr media
▲ Contras in Nicaragua
Washington Post page E-15 (and Indiana Gazette)
August 16, 1984 by Jack Anderson
In the Central American hinterlands, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish CIA operatives from the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s disciples. They appear to be working in harness against the communist-tainted Sandinista regime in Nicaragua.
This troubles at least one Pentagon analyst, now stationed in Korea, who has warned the White House that the CIA-Moonie connection could cause possible political damage to President Reagan’s re-election campaign.
The analyst’s unofficial memo, “Potential Problems,” has been slipped to my associate Donald Goldberg.
“Current Moonie involvement with government officials, contractors and grantees [in Central America] could create a major scandal,” the memo warns. “If their activities and role become public knowledge, it will unite both the left and the right in attacking the administration.”
The memo continues: “If efforts are not taken to stop their growing influence and weed out current Moonie involvement in government, the president stands a good chance of being portrayed in the media as a poor, naive incompetent who is strong on ideology and weak on common sense. …
“The likelihood of a reporter or a Democratic staff member piecing the total picture together is too great to be neglected. Any thought that this festering problem will go away if ignored is foolish.”
The “total picture” of Moon’s activities in Latin America is not clear. But there is no doubt that the Korean messiah – now in prison for income tax evasion [and document forgery and perjury] – has established a solid presence in the region, with ties to right-wing groups and U.S.-supported guerrillas.
My associate John Lee Anderson reports from Central America that CAUSA international, Moon’s political front, has representatives working in programs that help the CIA in its “contra” war against the Sandinista government.
CAUSA maintains a publicity office in Tegucigalpa, the Honduran capital, but its principal activities are in the field. CAUSA provides cash and other aid to Honduran-based Nicaraguan contras and Honduran right-wing political groups. Many anti-Sandinista guerrillas wear red CAUSA T-shirts with a map of the world on them.
But CAUSA and its affiliate, the Refugee Relief Freedom Foundation, provide more than T-shirts to rebel groups. They also funnel supplies to refugee families in and near contra camps and pay for trips by rebel leaders to the United States.
One contra leader, Fernando “El Negro” Chamorro, told my associate that as early as 1981, CAUSA representatives sent him on an all-expenses paid trip to the United States to try to unify the Nicaraguan exile groups.
The airlift of supplies to the rebels by Moon’s Unification Church has escalated since congress cut off CIA funding for the contras. The administration has been attempting to “privatize” its war against the Sandinistas and is apparently willing to work with Moon’s people.
Footnote: A Unification Church official denied that the church is engaged in any but religious activities in Central America.

For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Isaiah 14:13-14
“One of you is a devil!”
How can you know when someone is a devil? When somebody is a devil, he behaves exactly like the devil and fights for an inappropriate and evil independence just as the devil did! Satan is the great inspirer of all forms of premature independence. The sin of independence before the right time is one of the most destructive activities of devils. Until you have lived in a country that gained independence long before the people were ready to govern themselves, you will not understand the effects of premature independence.
Entire nations are destroyed by that single act of “independence before time”. Imagine a baby in the womb that cries for independence whilst it is connected by the umbilical cord. That baby is calling for its own death! Satan inspires people to call out for their own premature death.
Do you remember the mad man of Gadara and how he cut himself with stones? He cut himself and hurt himself because he was inspired by Satan. Satan is the one who inspires people to hurt themselves! Satan is the one who inspires people to do what will lead to their own destruction! Today, many people are walking in the sins of Satan and being inspired to fight for independence which will only lead to their destruction. Pastors are inspired to be independent when they cannot lead themselves! Churches are inspired to be independent when they cannot govern themselves! Nations are inspired to be independent when they do not know anything about leadership and government! Watch out for people who stand up in the name of independence but are actually rebels.
Satan attempted to be independent from God. However, no one can be independent from God. You want to be on your own because you think you do not need God’s input. You also think you can run your life as well as God can run it for you. In fact, you even think you can do a better job at running your own affairs than God can. Independence is often a fruit of pride. The voice of independence is often the voice of pride. If you are used to it, you will soon recognize it when you hear it. This is what it sounds like:
“I want to be on my own!”
“I don’t want to be under you!”
“I don’t want to work for anyone!”
“I am as good as you are!”
“Why should I work for you when I can work for myself?”
“I don’t want to serve anyone!”
“I have my own calling!”
“I have my own ministry!”
“I have heard from God myself!”
“I don’t need you!”
“I don’t need you and you don’t need me.”
“I don’t want to be associated with you!”
“I don’t need to be associated with you!”
“I will prove to you and to everyone that I am called and anointed!”
“I am my own man!”
“You were not there when God called me!”
“I can make it without you.”
“I will make it without you or anyone else.”
Notice how many times Satan used the word “I”. Satan was independently promoting himself, exalting himself, and declaring his personal ambitions. He was doing this whether anyone joined him or not.
This is the attitude of evil independence that seeks to be separate, isolated, and have its own vision. A separate, unique and different vision (I will ascend…) always leads to division. This is the original sin of Satan and it is the sin of many men today. They want to be independent of God. All attempts to be independent from God are inspired by the devil. No part of creation is independent of God. God sends the water from heaven and causes the grass to grow. The trees, the birds and the hills are dependent on God for instructions on what to do. Even the lions look to God for their meals. “O Lord, how manifold are thy works! In wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches” (Psalm 104:24). It is only the wickedness of the devil and the wickedness of man that seeks to be independent of God.
He watereth the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of thy works. He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man’s heart. The trees of the Lord are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted;Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies. He appointed the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down.Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth. THE YOUNG LIONS ROAR AFTER THEIR PREY, AND SEEK THEIR MEAT FROM GOD.
Psalm 104:13-21
Ideologies that Eliminate God
All ideologies that elevate man to the point where he thinks that he does not need God are Satanically inspired. It is only Satan who inspires you to separate yourself from God. The theories of humanism, secularism and rationalism make man feel that he does not need God. They are filled with the inspiration of Satan. Satan only wants man to be independent of God. Satan suggested that to Eve. That is how come we are in this big mess today!
Humanism: is a line of thinking that attaches prime importance to human rather than divine things.
Secularism: is a system of ideas that disregard or reject any form of religious faith and worship. Its primary objective is the total elimination of all religious elements from society. Secularism ensures that the right of individuals to freedom of religion is always balanced by the right to be free from religion. Secularists believe that man is the measure of all things, that morals are man-centered, not God-centered.
Rationalism: is the practice of accepting reason as the supreme authority rather than a religious belief.
Most of the wars in this world are caused by a desire to be independent. Therefore, many deaths in our world are caused indirectly by the spirit of independence. Look at this amazing list of wars that have been fought over the years. All these wars were fought for independence. In the church, many have become a sad version of what they were called to be because they desired independence so badly. Many times it is better to be the leg of an elephant than to be the head of an ant.
There are many small churches, which are inspired to be independent rather than to be a part of a fellowship. There are many independent churches that need to be dependent and part of a fellowship.
Satanic infiltration is growing in the last days, and therefore more independence is sought. For instance, in 1946 only 4% of all Pentecostal churches were independent, in both the United States and Canada. Today, much more than 75% of Pentecostal churches are single independent churches.
Most older churches were part of a denomination! For instance, in 1946, in an area where there were 27 Pentecostal churches, 26 of them were an integral part of a denomination.
Unfortunately, as Satanic infiltration occurs, more and more independence is sought. Satan causes pride and independence to grow in the hearts of men of God. Everyone wants to be independent and everyone wants to be the head. Satan is the author of evil and inappropriate independence. Satan is the father of the children of pride.
He (Leviathan) beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.
Job 41:34

Branhamite connections? And more?
It would be worth looking into the Branhamite of Colonia Dignidad fame Paul Schafer's connections with the Moonie counterinsurgency operations in South America. We know about Schafer’s intimate and direct connections to the murderous fascist Pinochet and their anti-communist mass murders, and we know about Pinochet’s connections to Moon and Moon’s banks in Uruguay (Banco de Credito). We know Schafer too was connected to the CIA’s rat-lines, and housed plenty of Nazi war criminals in Colonia Dignidad. We also know that Moon’s organization was tightly connected to Klaus Barbie in Bolivia, who had mobilized neo-nazi paramilitary for the “cocaine coup.”.  Long-time ex-Moonie researchers often talk about how Tom Ward, a UC leader and known CIA asset, was seen multiple times praying with Klaus Barbie. Though there had been a lot of amazing work done in the 70s, 80s, and even early 90s, about the UC’s role in international fascism, there is still so much work to be done in regards to how the UC aided fascism throughout Latin America and Southeast/East Asia.

Sun Myung Moon Was Building the Kingdom with M-16 Machine Guns
This post was submitted by Kirsti Nevalainen on the old WIOTM blog, originally posted on June 20, 2016.
Sun Myung Moon said in his speech on May 17, 1973: But when it comes to our age, we must have an automatic theocracy to rule the world. So we cannot separate the political field from the religious. Democracy was born because people ruled the world…Then, we come to the conclusion that God has to rule the world, and God loving people have to rule the world - and that is logical. We have to purge the corrupted politicians, and the sons of God must rule the world. The separation between religion and politics is what Satan likes most.
http://www.tparents.org/Moon-Talks/sunmyungmoon73/SM730517.htm
Moon does not recognize the legitimacy of constitutional democracy. Democracy is just a transitory phase on the way toward the global theocracy (Clarkson, Fred, “Moon’s Law”: “God Is Phasing Out Democracy” in CovertAction, Number 27 (Spring 1987), p. 46.
Sun Myung Moon and his political organizations The World Anticommunist League WACL and CAUSA were cooperating with the South Korean government and KCIA, the Taiwanese government and the ruling Japanese LDP party (whose backers were fascist war criminals Ryoichi Sasakawa, Yoshio Kodama and Nobusuke Kishi) and with the US government and CIA. This cooperation began already in the 1950s right after the WWII when the US government launched its global unti-communist war and continued Hitler’s unti-communist crusade with the help of former Nazis, Neo-Nazis, Fascists and all other extreme right-wingers like Sun Myung Moon and his church.
The Moon organization was deeply involved in the unti-communist wars in South and Central America during the 1970s and 1980s. According to Anderson’s report CIA and the Unification Church members cooperated in Sandinista War. In Central American hinterlands it was sometimes difficult to distinguish CIA operatives from the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s disciples. The Messiah had a solid presence in the region. CAUSA has helped “freedom fighters” with basic supplies, cash and emergency relief. Anderson has seen gun-toting guerillas in Honduras clad in red CAUSA T-shirts (Anderson, Scott and Anderson, Jon Lee, Inside The League, The Shocking Exposé Of How Terrorists, Nazis, And Latin American Death Squads Have Infiltrated The World Anti-Communist League, Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, 1986, pp. 128, 233, 234.
Moon’s organization developed close ties with the Honduran military and the Nicaraguan contra movement which were permiated with drug smugglers and human right violators. Senator John Kerry’s contra-drug investigation concluded that a number of contra units were implicated in the cocaine trade. According to Senator Kerry’s report, issued April 13, 1989, it was clear that individuals who provided support for the contras were involved in drug trafficking, the supply network of the contras was used by drug trafficking organizations, and elements of the contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers.
In 1980 Sun Myung Moon made friends in South America when Bolivia’s Cocaine Coup plotters seized power. According to Bolivian government and newspaper reports, a Moon representative invested about 4 million US dollars in preparations for the coup. CAUSA listed as members nearly all the leading Bolivian coup-makers. Moon’s organizations WACL and CAUSA were instrumental in financing and training the coup plotters.
It would be very important that all Unification Church and CAUSA members and ex-members who participated in the anti-communist wars in South and Central America and elsewhere in the world would come forward and tell about these secret and illegal operations.

Was Thomas Ward a CIA Paymaster in Bolivia?
From a post by “Frank Frivolous,” posted on the old ‘What Is On The Moon?’ blog on December 3, 2014:
Tumblr media
Here is an article that was published thirty years ago in Der Spiegel. Reprinted again in the U.S. by a leftward periodical called Covert Action. The other articles are also interesting but scroll to the last one first.
I will paste a sample here just to give you a taste. Please appreciate the fact that this man secured this story at the risk of his life as the Nazis involved in the Bolivian Cocaine Coup were trained killers.
“Two days after his recruitment by the CIA, says Mingolla, he met the Old German in the courtyard of the Bolivian General Staff. Mingolla came out of department VII of the intelligence agency; Barbie came out of department III. Barbie greeted his colleague—as Mingolla remembers it,                 Hello, comrade, what do I hear? Are you working for a new employer? Mingolla answered with surprise, For what, for who, then? Barbie: `Na, for Mr. Ward, for example. Mingolla feared reproach. Yes. Doesn't the organization allow that? Barbie laughed. It's okay. There has to be cooperation. Mingolla says that it was first clear to him on that day that Barbie had become a top man for the CIA. Because only two people knew the names of the other agency employees. The Moon man Tom Ward was Klaus Barbie’s CIA contact man only preceding and directly after the putsch of 1980.”
That is all I will post here because you really need to read the article. Mingolla was a member of Argentinian intelligence and Klaus Barbie was a German Gestapo officer during WW2 who was secreted to S. America  by the C.I.A. after their surrender. No surprise that the story wasn’t carried in the American media. After this you may want to confront Tom Ward about it next time he shows up at a church function. Please report back to us his reaction.
Thanks, FF

On Nazi Klaus Barbie and Moonie Tom Ward
Excerpted from Covert Action Information Bulletin No. 25   LINK More on Moon in South America LINK The Argentinean agent Alfredo Mingolla at first knew little about the connection between the Nazi Barbie and the Moonie Ward. Two days after his recruitment by the CIA, says Mingolla, he met the “Old German” in the courtyard of the Bolivian General Staff. Mingolla came out of department VII of the intelligence agency; Barbie came out of department III.
Barbie greeted his colleague—as Mingolla remembers it, “Hello, comrade, what do I hear? Are you working for a new employer?” Mingolla answered with surprise, “For what, for who, then?” Barbie: “Na, for Mr. Ward, for example.” Mingolla feared reproach. “Yes. Doesn’t the organization allow that?” Barbie laughed. “It’s okay. There has to be cooperation.”
Mingolla says that it was first clear to him on that day that Barbie had become a top man for the CIA. Because only top people knew the names of the other agency employees.

▲ Klaus Barbie in his German SS uniform. The Moon man Tom Ward was Klaus Barbie’s CIA contact man only preceding and directly after the Bolivian putsch of 1980. Barbie’s steady CIA contact person was the munitions dealer Fernando Inchauste. He boasted that he had direct contact with President Reagan, whom he allegedly knew during the latter’s California governor days.
Another one of Barbie’s steady CIA contact people was George Portugal, also a munitions dealer. He was Inchauste’s close co-worker and Barbie’s business friend.” …     page 20 “In the beginning of March 1982, the Argentinean agent Mingolla met with the Moon-CIA agent Ward in the cafeteria “Fontana” of La Paz’s Hotel Plaza.
The seminary priest Mingolla remembered that it was St. Thomas Aquinas’s name day. Mingolla’s CIA involvement had silently expired. The Argentinean asked the American what was still going on.
Tom Ward seemed resigned. He said the government in Argentina was finished. And the Argentineans had made a lot of mistakes in Bolivia: Your entire position is simply too reactionary. The whole affair with Altmann (Klaus Barbie), with the whole Fascism and Nazism bit, that was a dead end street.” Ward ordered a drink after his first coffee. Mingolla was surprised that the bigoted ascetic had suddenly started to drink.
But even the fanatical Nazi Mingolla seemed to have turned over a new leaf. “You can’t create a new order with the old Germans, with Hitler and all that. You have to find something modern.”
Tom Ward, under the influence of alcohol, started criticizing himself severely. “It was also stupid having Moon and Causa here.”
Mingolla was perplexed. “You’re saying that? You’re the boss of the whole thing, the head missionary.”
… A few days later, Ward flew to the U.S.; Mingolla to Guatemala. …”

We all hate Tom Ward
Tumblr media
▲Thomas Ward, Moonie and CIA liaison and friend of fascists all over the world
It has been really AMAZING to see the backlash from ex-second generation to see the recent podcast made by the Family Fed that features an interview with Tom Ward, who gives his testimony of how he joined the movement. Personally, I do not have the strength to withstand his testimony. I’m sure it’s full of UC-coordinated half-truths and mistruths, which actually makes me interested in whatever he has to say (how people lie can tell us a lot about what the truth actually is), but the baffoon was an ally and friend of Nazis, the CIA, and did not care at all that his actions would result in right-wing governments committing unimaginable violence (disappearing and murdering activists, cutting welfare and services for the people, empowering the militarized police state, stealing lands of Indigenous people for the sake of corporate interests, even genocides, and so much more!).
And how did the ex-members react to this episode? Universally, overwhelmingly, negatively. And not just because it’s pro-Moon propaganda, but Tom Ward’s name is KNOWN more by ex-2nd gen than active 2nd gen... for his own role in Bolivia’s cocaine coup! Yes, this is the Tom Ward that befriended Nazi drug lord and paramilitary commander Klaus Barbie.
The fact that so many people had such a negative reaction to Tom Ward’s episode means that there is a growing consciousness in the ex-community of the political reasons for the UC’s existence, and the UC’s complicity and role in the horrors of U.S.-led violence and reactionary politicking.
If we all hate Tom Ward... well, that’s a good place to start. He’s genuinely an enemy of the people of the world. If we can see him for what he is, then we can also see the United States for what it is... and maybe even capitalism.

Washington Post: Moon's 'Cause' Takes Aim At Communism in Americas (1983)
By Joanne Omang August 28, 1983
An arm of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, a group called "Causa," or "cause" in Spanish, is pumping millions of dollars into an anti-communist organizing effort throughout the United States and in much of Central and South America.
Offering free seminars, international trips and conferences around the region to decision makers, journalists and local leaders, Causa International and its subsidiary, Causa USA, have also invested in newspapers and printing companies and in a Uruguayan bank, broadcasting station and other businesses.
The group's president is retired South Korean Col. Bo Hi Pak, chief aide to Moon, and its executive director is Warren S. Richardson, formerly chief counsel to the Liberty Lobby. President Reagan nominated Richardson to be an assistant secretary in the Department of Health and Human Services in 1981, but Richardson withdrew amid charges that the Liberty Lobby is racist and anti-Semitic.
Causa seeks to promote a philosophy called "God-ism," which Causa officials say is an alternative set of ideas for people likely to be tempted by communism. Although usually--but not always--openly financed and led by followers of Moon, Causa claims to be completely ecumenical and to have plans to put nonmembers of the Unification Church in leadership jobs.
Founded in New York in 1980, Causa has had a rocky time in Brazil, where only police intervention prevented mobs from destroying Unification churches in nine cities; and in Honduras and El Salvador, where Roman Catholic Church leaders denounced Causa as anti-Christian for its links to Moon.
But in Uruguay, Paraguay and Guatemala and in 18 other nations, Causa literature says, Causa operations are thriving despite opposition from the Catholic Church, to which the vast majority of Latin Americans belong.
Causa International has recently been most visible in Honduras, where Pak contributed $50,000 last March on behalf of Causa to a new, exclusive group of businessmen and military officers called the Association for the Promotion of Honduras (APROH).
The group is widely viewed as a vehicle for the political ambitions of its leader, Honduran military commander-in-chief Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, who is the defense minister. It started with 100 members who each pledged to give $6,000 a year, according to press reports in Honduras.
Causa had earlier given 12 Honduran notables a free trip to South Korea. They included newspaper and television editors, the presidential press secretary and a man later elected rector of the University of Honduras with APROH help, Oswaldo Ramos Soto. Causa also held a series of four-day seminars on anti- communism in San Pedro Sula, Honduras' second-largest city, for "over 1,000 national leaders," journalists and public officials, according to Causa literature.
The hotel bill alone for one of the conferences came to $70,000, one local official said.
But April 8, Honduras' Roman Catholic Conference of Bishops denounced Causa and the Unification Church, issuing a pastoral letter prohibiting priests and lay workers and "anyone who wishes to remain Catholic" from taking part or encouraging any involvement in Causa or any other Unification Church operation.
The Unification Church, the letter said, is "truly anti-Christian" and produces "a species of material and spiritual slavery."
"It is very probable that until now, Causa has not here manifested its moral and religious danger. But given its tactics, when this happens it could be too late for many," the bishops' letter said.
After that, a diplomatic source said, APROH officials told the press they had returned the $50,000 check to Pak, although Causa officials would not confirm this. A Causa effort to purchase the Tegucigalpa newspaper El Heraldo fell through. "The Catholic church was so powerful it saved us," said a leading industrialist in San Pedro Sula. "If it hadn't been for them, the Moonies would own Honduras by now."
Moon, 63, of South Korea, lives on an estate in Irvington, N.Y. He was sentenced in July, 1982, to 18 months in federal prison for conspiracy and tax fraud, but the case is being appealed.
He has been controversial since he arrived in the United States in 1971, first becoming visible politically with a 1973 publicity campaign supporting President Nixon at the height of the Watergate controversy.
Congress investigated Moon's business empire and its alleged connections to the Korean CIA in 1978 during the so-called "Koreagate" bribery scandal, describing Moon's worldwide operations as designed to further the growth of a religious cult with Moon at the center.
The Unification Church, known formally as the Holy Spirit Association for the Unification of World-Wide Christianity, claims 30,000 adherents in the United States, 3 million worldwide. Its basic theology, according to Joy Morrow, assistant to the director of the District of Columbia Unification Church, holds that God's plan to establish a divine family on Earth through Adam and Eve was foiled when Lucifer seduced Eve. All humankind is therefore born tainted.
Morrow said God's second attempt also failed when Christ was betrayed, and Moon has said he "could be" the third attempt. God-denying communism is the strongest satanic force in the world and must be defeated through educating the people, who then must take individual action, Morrow said.
But some of Moon's followers, who are often referred to as "Moonies," have left the church and charge that the cult also permits "heavenly deception" of those who have rejected Moon's message, on grounds that they are lost to Satan. They also say that Moon uses brainwashing techniques to break family ties and obtain control of followers' assets and that virtually any excess is allowed in defense of the "divine family."
Causa International, Morrow said, is "the arm of the church that's fighting communism." None of its officials would consent to be interviewed, and answers to written questions about events described in this article were not provided as promised because, an aide said, leaders "have been in a meeting for several days."
In the United States, Causa USA started out as Causa North America, bringing about 200 "friends, contacts and acquaintances of church members and [Capitol] Hill staff people" to its first three-day seminar in Jamaica last February, Causa USA director Joe A. Tully related in an interview. Conference chairman was Lynn F. Bouchey, head of the Council on Inter-American Security, a conservative think tank that has its Capitol Hill office one floor below Causa USA.
Four similar seminars have take place since: one in Reston, Va., one in Denver, and two here. Participants in each event suggested the names of people to be invited to the next, Tully said, and contacts thus made will be asked to help set up Causa offices in every state starting this month.
An advisory committee is designing plans that will take Causa's work beyond seminars and into programs that may include voter registration, journals and educational campaigns aimed at members of Congress, he continued.
Tully, 37, formerly New York director of the Unification Church, acknowledged that the five seminars had cost Causa "close to" $1 million, calling it "seed money" for nationwide expansion.
"We want to be a grass-roots organization with hundreds of thousands of people involved," he said.
Causa started in 1980 as the Confederation of Associations for the Unity of the Societies of the Americas (CAUSA), but the original emphasis on the Americas soon proved too narrow, Tully said. There was so much interest in Europe and other parts of the world that the original name was dropped and just the acronym retained, Tully said. Causa North America became Causa USA this month, and organizations eventually will be set up in every nation, he said.
"The cause is the defeat of communism, and that's not just an effort for Americans," Tully said.
The letters of invitation to past seminars identify Causa as an educational institution whose activities "are presently funded through business interests connected with the Unification Church of Rev. Moon." However, "the intent is not conversion to any given church," the letter continues, but "to provide a foundation for the cooperation of God-accepting people against the common enemy, communism."
Tully said the group "wanted to be up front" about the connection to avoid any appearance of deception. Conservatives who attended the conferences "have tended to keep at arms' length from us" but responded to the idea of an ecumenical anti-communist effort, he said.
In El Salvador, Causa officials tried to deny the Unification Church connection, according to a June 26 article in Orientacion, the official weekly of the San Salvador archdiocese. The article said Jesus Gonzalez, administrator of Causa's Honduras office, had called "to convince us that this organization and the Unification Church have no relation, in spite of having been warmed since their foundation by the same sun and illuminated by the same shining moon, the false Rev. Sun Myung Moon."
Causa had brought 155 foreign journalists and notables to El Salvador briefly in June as part of a "World Media Conference" it organized in Guatemala. Participants from 45 countries on five continents included former Vietnamese vice premier Nguyen Cao Ky and Lloyd Bucher, who commanded the USS Pueblo when North Korea captured it and held its crew hostage for 11 months in 1968.
After the group spent six days in Guatemala starting June 8, according to a June 20 article in Guatemala's Prensa Libre newspaper, Causa flew it in a Boeing 707 for day trips to Honduras, Costa Rica and El Salvador. The writers met with military and business leaders in each country, hearing from Pak and also from then-President Efrain Rios Montt of Guatemala.
Causa had begun operations in Guatemala as one of many non-Catholic sects that set up storefront missions soon after Rios Montt took power in March, 1982.
Causa apparently has had its greatest success in Uruguay. In March, 1981, Pak met in Montevideo, the capital, with top government officials, including then-President Aparicio Mendez, the vice president and the interior minister. Causa then founded a newspaper, Noticias del Uruguay, and won the right in a secret auction to build a casino and a luxury hotel, according to later newspaper accounts.
A minor scandal erupted in the Uruguayan press that summer over the award of the casino rights, which violated Uruguayan gambling laws. According to the Council on Hemispheric Affairs (COHA) newsletter of Nov. 3, 1981, the new president, Gregorio Alvarez, defended the award to Causa and said, "With respect to the fight against communism, it is obvious that we think alike."
By the end of 1981, Causa was authorized to set up an FM and medium-wave radio station in Canelones for broadcast to Montevideo and launched a second newspaper, Ultimas Noticias, in September. It also bought the largest publishing house in Uruguay, Editorial Polo; a restaurant and a meat-packing plant; and it now owns the country's biggest luxury hotel, the Victoria Plaza, according to The Latin American Newsletter of Jan. 29, 1982.
In 1982, Causa won a controlling interest of the Banco de Credito, Uruguay's third-largest national bank, and press reports said Causa had put $50 million into the bank purchase effort.
"They bought newspapers, they bought real estate, they bought generals, they bought out the country," said a Reagan administration official who was there at the time. "There was a big stink about it."
Causa and the Unification Church have been active in several other South American nations:
* Brazil: Mobs stoned and sacked Unification churches in seven cities and were blocked by police in assaults on churches in nine other towns during mid-1981. Juvenile-court judges prohibited minors from joining the sect, and the political police in Sao Paulo opened a nationwide investigation of the church. Leaders said the church had registered 5,000 members in 60 branches after one year of operation.
* Bolivia: Press reports in 1981 said Causa had applied to build a $42 million complex of office buildings, including a radio and television station, after Pak visited there in March. Later reports said the project was abandoned in the chaos of political coups.
* Chile: A seminar on "unificationism as the solution to communism" in 1981 drew high-ranking military officers and a personal representative of President Augusto Pinochet, according to the COHA newsletter of Nov. 3, 1981. It quoted Pak as saying, "I think the day will come when the world will recognize this nation as a fountain of hope" for people living under communist regimes.
* Paraguay: In 1981, Causa held a week-long seminar in Asuncion on anti-communism for members of President Alfredo Stroessner's ruling Colorado Party, following it with a series of lectures for young people in the capital. A Paraguayan publishing house, Christian Press, recently announced that it had been sold to the Unification Church.

SOUTH AMERICA: ‘Archives of Terror’ Yield New Horrors by Darío Montero The so-called "archives of terror" discovered by a human rights lawyer in Paraguay over a decade ago continue to yield new information on the cooperation between the de facto regimes that ruled much of South America in the 1970s and 1980s. MONTEVIDEO, Sep 16, 2005 (IPS) - Paraguayan activist and lawyer Martín Almada visited Uruguay this week to hand over documents recently found in the archives of terror, which indicate that the number of Uruguayans who were detained in Paraguay during the dictatorial regimes was much greater than human rights groups had previously realised. In December 1992, Almada, who was held as a political prisoner and tortured in his country in the 1970s, came across a room full of official records in a police station near the Paraguayan capital. The hundreds of thousands of documents that he basically discovered by accident pertain to the torture and forced disappearances carried out by the dictatorship of Gen. Alfredo Stroessner (1954-1989) in Paraguay. But the archives of terror are especially important because they contain secret documents shedding light on Operation Condor, a coordinated plan among the military governments that ruled Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay in the 1970s and 1980s, aimed at tracking down, capturing and eliminating left-wing opponents. Thanks to legal action by Almada, the archives of terror are open to public scrutiny. They are stored on the premises of Paraguay's Supreme Court, in the Centre of Documentation and Archives for the Defence of Human Rights.
...
"These documents also indicate that Korean Reverend Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church had links" to Operation Condor as well, he added.
...
After September 1977, "ties began to appear between Moon's sect and the local and Latin American Anti-Communist League. A finance company, Urundel, was even set up in Paraguay to serve as a bank for the repressive operations in that country," said Almada.

Decades of Silence Broken: Former Uruguayan Intelligence Agent Sentenced for Dictatorship Crimes
February 22, 2024
Former Uruguayan intelligence agent Jorge Carlos Guldenzoph Nunez sentenced for dictatorship crimes.
The courtroom was charged with a palpable mix of apprehension and hope as survivors, now decades older, stood to recount their harrowing tales. They spoke of electric shocks, beatings, and other forms of torture that left indelible scars on both body and psyche. Approximately 50 survivors shared their testimonies, painting a vivid picture of the horrors inflicted upon them. The indictment against Jorge Carlos Guldenzoph Nunez highlighted his active role in the arrest, interrogation, and forced confessions of dissidents, laying bare the systemic cruelty that characterized the regime's approach to dissent. Guldenzoph Nunez's trial, which began in July 2020, was a culmination of years of tireless advocacy by victims and human rights organizations.
...
The dictatorship in Uruguay, spanning from 1973 to 1985, left a deep and lasting impact on the nation's collective memory. It's estimated that 20% of the population was imprisoned at some point, with around 200 citizens murdered and an additional 191 disappearing without a trace. These numbers, while stark, barely scratch the surface of the pain and trauma experienced by those who lived through the regime's darkest days.

Hitler’s Shadow Reaches toward Today
https://consortiumnews.com/2014/05/14/hitlers-shadow-reaches-toward-today-2/
From the Archive: The key role of neo-Nazis in Ukraine’s U.S.-backed coup is denied by the mainstream U.S. press, which can’t believe the U.S. government would collaborate with such unsavory characters, but that isn’t the real history, as Robert Parry reported in 2010.
By Robert Parry (Originally published on Dec. 17, 2010)
The U.S. government protected Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie in the years after World War II and later unleashed the infamous Butcher of Lyon on South America by aiding his escape from French war-crimes prosecutors, according to a report issued by the National Archives in 2010.
The report, entitled “Hitler’s Shadow,” concentrates on the decisions by the U.S. Army’s Counterintelligence Corps to use Barbie and other ex-Nazis for early Cold War operations, but other work by investigative journalists and government investigators has shown how Barbie’s continued allegiance to Nazi ideology contributed to the spread of right-wing extremism in Latin America.
Tumblr media
▲ Nazi SS officer Klaus Barbie.
With his skills as an intelligence operative and his expertise in state terror, Barbie helped shape the particularly vicious style of anti-communism that dominated South America for most of the Cold War. He also played a role in building a conduit for drug proceeds to fund right-wing paramilitary operations, including Ronald Reagan’s beloved Nicaraguan Contra rebels.
In 1980, Barbie used his perch in Bolivian intelligence to organize an alliance of military leaders and cocaine barons to overthrow Bolivia’s democratically elected leftist government in a bloody coup. Though fitting with Washington’s distrust of left-wing populist governments in South America, the so-called Cocaine Coup had other long-term consequences for the United States.
Bolivia’s coup regime ensured a reliable flow of coca to Colombia’s Medellin cartel, which quickly grew into a sophisticated conglomerate for smuggling cocaine into the United States. Some of those drug profits then went to finance right-wing paramilitary operations, including the CIA-backed Contras, according to other U.S. government investigations.
Barbie reportedly collaborated, too, with representatives of Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church as they worked with Bolivia’s Cocaine Coup regime to organize anti-communist operations in South America. By then, the region had become a center for Moon’s global money-laundering operations. In 1982, Moon began pouring hundreds of millions of his mysterious dollars into the right-wing Washington Times newspaper to influence U.S. politics.
Eventually, as Bolivia’s corrupt Cocaine Coup government crumbled and Barbie’s identity became well known, French authorities finally secured Barbie’s return to France to face a war-crimes trial in 1983. (He died in 1991.)
The Butcher of Lyon’s role in these South American anti-communist activities caused brief embarrassment for Moon’s church and some right-wing Americans. But the Nazi collaboration didn’t draw much attention from the U.S. news media, which was already shying away from critical reporting on the Reagan administration’s unsavory alliances in Central and South America.
A Long Continuum
Indeed, the Right’s growing dominance of Washington opinion circles can be viewed as a continuum dating back to those days right after World War II, when U.S. priorities switched quickly from prosecuting Axis war criminals to seeking their help in crushing leftist political influence in Western Europe and Asia.
Suddenly, U.S. intelligence agencies were freeing Nazi and Japanese war criminals from prison and exploiting their talents to neutralize labor unions, student groups and other left-wing organizations.
Though the National Archives report deals with ex-Nazis in Europe, a similar program was underway in Japan where war criminals such as right-wing yakuza gangsters Yoshio Kodama and Ryoichi Sasakawa were freed and allowed to become important political figures in Japan and later internationally by supporting a global crusade against communism.
In the 1960s, Kodama and Sasakawa joined with Rev. Moon and two right-wing dictators, Taiwan’s Chiang Kai-shek and South Korea’s Park Chung Hee, to create the World Anti-Communist League (WACL), which also brought in right-wing leaders from Latin America and Europe, including ex-Nazis and neo-Nazis, according to authors Scott and Jon Lee Anderson in their landmark 1986 book, Inside the League.
So, with the Cocaine Coup in 1980, Barbie not only closed the circle, bringing together death-squad commanders, ex-Nazis, neo-Nazis and various sociopaths from around the globe, but he helped ensure that drug proceeds would be available to fund right-wing causes in the future.
“Hitler’s Shadow,” in effect, tells the first chapter of this right-wing restoration as U.S. intelligence agencies turned to former Nazi officials and SS officers to counter the perceived greater threat from the Soviet Union and Communist groups in Europe.
“Gestapo officers, who also held ranks in the SS, were in the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Corps’s automatic arrest category after the war,” the report said. “Later, CIC used former Gestapo officers to garner useful intelligence for the postwar period on everything from German right-wing movements to underground communist organizations. Intelligence officers often overlooked the significant role Gestapo officers played in the murder of Jews, POWs, and the political enemies of the Nazis.”
The report notes that “approximately 1,200 newly released files relate to the penetration of German Communist activities and specifically to ‘Project Happiness,’ the CIC’s codename for counterintelligence operations against the KPD,” the German Communist Party.
Though Barbie notorious for personally torturing French partisans during the war may be the best known ex-Gestapo officer recruited by the CIC, others had similar histories.
For instance, Anton Mahler was the chief interrogator of Hans Scholl, a leader of the White Rose, a Munich-based student organization that secretly passed out leaflets urging Adolf Hitler’s overthrow and decrying German apathy in the face of Hitler’s crimes. Hans and his sister Sophie Scholl were convicted of high treason and beheaded in February 1943.
Mahler also served in Einsatzgruppe B in occupied Belarus as the group slaughtered more than 45,000 people, most of them Jews, the report said. Nevertheless, CIC deployed Mahler as an informant starting in February 1949 and soon made him a full-time employee.
Regarding Barbie, the report builds on a 1983 investigation by a Justice Department investigator who confirmed suspicions that U.S. intelligence had worked with and protected this hunted war criminal who was accused of executing 4,000 people and shipping 7,000 Jews to concentration camps.
“In the spring of 1947 a CIC agent named Robert S. Taylor from CIC Region IV (Munich) recruited Klaus Barbie, the one-time Gestapo Chief of Lyon (194244),” the new report said. “Barbie helped run a counterintelligence net named ‘Büro Petersen’ which monitored French intelligence.
“In 1948 Barbie helped the CIC locate former Gestapo informants. In 194950, he penetrated German Communist Party (KPD) activities in CIC Region XII (Augsburg). He continued to work for the CIC in return for protection against French war crimes charges.”
Ratline to Bolivia
The story of Barbie’s escape to South America with the CIC’s collaboration was addressed in the 1983 report by Allan A. Ryan Jr., head of the Justice Department’s Nazi-hunting Office of Special Investigations. Ryan’s 218-page report said that in 1951, the CIC helped Barbie evade French authorities and flee over a “ratline” to Bolivia.
Ryan said that a half dozen CIC officers participated in the cover-up of Barbie’s identity and excused their actions by claiming that the French arrest of Barbie could jeopardize the security of other CIC operations. To get Barbie to Bolivia, the CIC officers used a ratline run by a Croatian priest, Father Krunoslav Draganovich, Ryan wrote.
Ryan said the Central Intelligence Agency later rebuffed suggestions that Barbie be reactivated in the 1960s, but Barbie using the name Altmann held an official position with a state-owned shipping company that allowed him to move freely and even to travel to the United States. [For more on Ryan’s report, see Time magainzse, Time magazine, Aug. 29, 1983]
More significantly, Barbie became a figure in Bolivian intelligence and used that perch to coordinate with other right-wing intelligence services around the continent that were engaged in Operation Condor, a program of assassinating suspected subversives and other dissidents.
In the 1970s, these intelligence agencies had teamed up to give their assassination squads regional and even global reach, including the murder of Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier and an American co-worker on the streets of Washington in 1976.
For the Cocaine Coup in 1980, Barbie recruited Argentina’s feared intelligence service along with young neo-Nazis from Europe. The World Anti-Communist League arranged support from Moon and other Asian rightists.
For years, Moon had been sinking down roots in South America, especially in Uruguay after right-wing military dictators seized power there in 1973. Moon also cultivated close ties with dictators in Argentina, Paraguay and Chile, reportedly ingratiating himself with the juntas by helping the regimes buy weapons and by channeling money to allied right-wing organizations.
“Relationships nurtured with right-wing Latin Americans in the [World Anti-Communist] League led to acceptance of the [Unification] Church’s political and propaganda operations throughout Latin America,” the Andersons wrote in Inside the League.
“As an international money laundry, the Church tapped into the capital flight havens of Latin America. Escaping the scrutiny of American and European investigators, the Church could now funnel money into banks in Honduras, Uruguay and Brazil, where official oversight was lax or nonexistent.”
Moon expanded his network of friends when Barbie helped pull together a right-wing alliance of Bolivian military officers and drug dealers for the Cocaine Coup. WACL associates, such as Alfredo Candia, coordinated the arrival of some of the paramilitary operatives from Argentina and Europe who would help out in the violent putsch.
Barbie, then better known as Altmann, was in charge of drawing up plans for the coup and coordinating with Argentine intelligence. One of the first Argentine intelligence officers to arrive was Lt. Alfred Mario Mingolla.
“Before our departure, we received a dossier on” Barbie, Mingolla later told German investigative reporter Kai Hermann. “There it stated that he was of great use to Argentina because he played an important role in all of Latin America in the fight against communism. From the dossier, it was also clear that Altmann worked for the Americans.”
The Cocaine Motive
As the coup took shape, Bolivian Col. Luis Arce-Gomez, the cousin of cocaine kingpin Roberto Suarez, also brought onboard neo-fascist terrorists such as Italian Stefano della Chiaie who had been working with the Argentine death squads. [See Cocaine Politics by Peter Dale Scott and Jonathan Marshall]
Still a committed fascist, Barbie started a secret lodge, called Thule. During meetings, he lectured to his followers underneath swastikas by candlelight.
On June 17, 1980, in nearly public planning for the coup, six of Bolivia’s biggest traffickers met with the military conspirators to hammer out a financial deal for future protection of the cocaine trade. A La Paz businessman said the coming putsch should be called the “Cocaine Coup,” a name that would stick. [See Cocaine Politics]
Less than three weeks later, on July 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, U.S. undercover drug enforcement agent Michael Levine said he met with a Bolivian trafficker named Hugo Hurtado-Candia. Over drinks, Hurtado outlined plans for the “new government” in which his niece Sonia Atala, a major cocaine supplier, will “be in a very strong position.” [See Levine’s Big White Lie]
On July 17, the Cocaine Coup began, spearheaded by Barbie and his neo-fascist goon squad which was dubbed the “Fiancés of Death.”
“The masked thugs were not Bolivians; they spoke Spanish with German, French and Italian accents,” Levine wrote. “Their uniforms bore neither national identification nor any markings, although many of them wore Nazi swastika armbands and insignias.”
The slaughter was fierce. When the putschists stormed the national labor headquarters, they wounded labor leader Marcelo Quiroga, who had led the effort to indict former military dictator Hugo Banzer on drug and corruption charges. Quiroga “was dragged off to police headquarters to be the object of a game played by some of the torture experts imported from Argentina’s dreaded Mechanic School of the Navy,” Levine wrote.
“These experts applied their ‘science’ to Quiroga as a lesson to the Bolivians, who were a little backward in such matters. They kept Quiroga alive and suffering for hours. His castrated, tortured body was found days later in a place called ‘The valley of the Moon’ in southern La Paz.”
To DEA agent Levine back in Buenos Aires, it was soon clear “that the primary goal of the revolution was the protection and control of Bolivia’s cocaine industry. All major drug traffickers in prison were released, after which they joined the neo-Nazis in their rampage.
“Government buildings were invaded and trafficker files were either carried off or burned. Government employees were tortured and shot, the women tied and repeatedly raped by the paramilitaries and the freed traffickers.”
The fascists celebrated with swastikas and shouts of “Heil Hitler!” Hermann reported. Col. Arce-Gomez, a central-casting image of a bemedaled, pot-bellied Latin dictator, grabbed broad powers as Interior Minister. Gen. Luis Garcia Meza was installed as Bolivia’s new president.
The victory put into power a right-wing military dictatorship indebted to the drug lords. Bolivia became South America’s first narco-state.
Moon’s Throne
One of the first well-wishers arriving in La Paz to congratulate the new government was Moon’s top lieutenant (and former KCIA officer) Bo Hi Pak. The Moon organization published a photo of Pak meeting with the new strongman, General Garcia Meza. After the visit to the mountainous capital, Pak declared, “I have erected a throne for Father Moon in the world’s highest city.”
According to later Bolivian government and newspaper reports, a Moon representative invested about $4 million in preparations for the coup. Bolivia’s WACL representatives also played key roles, and CAUSA, one of Moon’s anti-communist organizations, listed as members nearly all the leading Bolivian coup-makers.
Soon, Colonel Luis Arce-Gomez, a coup organizer and the cousin of cocaine kingpin Roberto Suarez, went into partnership with big narco-traffickers, including Cuban-American smugglers based in Miami. Nazi war criminal Barbie and his young neo-fascist followers found new work protecting Bolivia’s major cocaine barons and transporting drugs to the Colombian border.
“The paramilitary units conceived by Barbie as a new type of SS sold themselves to the cocaine barons,” German journalist Hermann wrote. “The attraction of fast money in the cocaine trade was stronger than the idea of a national socialist revolution in Latin America.”
A month after the Cocaine Coup, General Garcia Meza participated in the Fourth Congress of the Latin American Anti-Communist Confederation, an arm of the World Anti-Communist League. Also attending that Fourth Congress was WACL president Woo Jae Sung, a leading Moon disciple.
As the drug lords consolidated their power in Bolivia, the Moon organization expanded its presence, too. Hermann reported that in early 1981, war criminal Barbie and Moon leader Thomas Ward were seen together in apparent prayer.
On May 31, 1981, Moon representatives sponsored a CAUSA reception at the Sheraton Hotel’s Hall of Freedom in La Paz. Moon’s lieutenant Bo Hi Pak and Bolivian strongman Garcia Meza led a prayer for President Ronald Reagan’s recovery from an assassination attempt.
In his speech, Bo Hi Pak declared, “God had chosen the Bolivian people in the heart of South America as the ones to conquer communism.”
Flush with Cash
In the early 1980s, cocaine kingpin Suarez his coffers now overflowing with cash invested more than $30 million in various right-wing paramilitary operations, including the Contra forces in Central America, according to U.S. Senate testimony in 1987 by an Argentine intelligence officer, Leonardo Sanchez-Reisse.
Sanchez-Reisse testified that the Suarez drug money was laundered through front companies in Miami before going to Central America. There, Argentine intelligence officers, including Sanchez-Reisse and other veterans of the Cocaine Coup, trained the fledgling Contra forces.
But by late 1981, the cocaine taint of Bolivia’s military junta was so deep and the corruption so pervasive that U.S.-Bolivian relations were stretched to the breaking point. “The Moon sect disappeared overnight from Bolivia as clandestinely as they had arrived,” Hermann reported.
The Cocaine Coup leaders soon found themselves on the run, too. Interior Minister Arce-Gomez was extradited to Miami and was sentenced to 30 years in prison for drug trafficking. Drug lord Suarez got a 15-year prison term. General Garcia Meza became a fugitive from a 30-year sentence imposed on him in Bolivia for abuse of power, corruption and murder.
SS veteran Barbie was returned to France to face a life sentence for war crimes. He died in 1991 at the age of 77.
But Moon’s organization suffered few negative repercussions from its role in the Cocaine Coup. By the early 1980s, flush with seemingly unlimited funds, Moon had moved on to promoting himself as a key friend of the new Republican administration in Washington.
A guest at Reagan’s First Inauguration, Moon made his organization useful to the new President and to Vice President George H.W. Bush, who would later become a paid speaker for Moon’s organization. Where Moon got his cash was not a mystery that American conservatives were eager to solve.
“Some Moonie-watchers even believe that some of the business enterprises are actually covers for drug trafficking,” wrote Scott and Jon Lee Anderson.
While Moon’s representatives have refused to detail how they’ve sustained their far-flung activities including many businesses that insiders say lose money Moon’s spokesmen have denied recurring allegations about profiteering off illegal trafficking in weapons and drugs.
In a typical response to a gun-running question by the Argentine newspaper, Clarin, Moon’s representative Ricardo DeSena responded, “I deny categorically these accusations and also the barbarities that are said about drugs and brainwashing.” [Clarin, July 7, 1996]
Nevertheless, Moon’s organization did its best to disrupt the work of U.S. investigative reporters and government investigators looking into the connections between the drug trade and right-wing paramilitary operations such as the Nicaraguan Contras.
In the mid-1980s, for instance, when journalists and congressional investigators began probing the evidence of Contra-connected drug trafficking, they came under attack from Moon’s Washington Times. An Associated Press story that I co-wrote with Brian Barger about a Miami-based federal probe into gun- and drug-running by the Contras was disparaged in an April 11, 1986, front-page Washington Times article with the headline: “Story on [contra] drug smuggling denounced as political ploy.”
When Sen. John Kerry, D-Massachusetts, uncovered additional evidence of Contra-drug trafficking, the Washington Times denounced him, too. The newspaper published articles depicting Kerry’s probe as a wasteful political witch hunt. “Kerry’s anti-contra efforts extensive, expensive, in vain,” declared the headline of one Times article on Aug. 13, 1986.
Despite the attacks, Kerry’s Contra-drug investigation eventually concluded that a number of Contra units were implicated in the cocaine trade.
“It is clear that individuals who provided support for the contras were involved in drug trafficking, the supply network of the contras was used by drug trafficking organizations, and elements of the contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers,” Kerry’s investigation stated in a report issued April 13, 1989.
Mysterious Contra Backer
In 1998, CIA’s Inspector General Frederick Hitz confirmed the earlier allegations of extensive cocaine trafficking by the Contras, including significant ties to Bolivia’s traffickers. Hitz also cited a partially redacted document referring to a “religious” group cooperating with the Contra-cocaine trade.
“There are indications of links between [a U.S. religious organization] and two Nicaraguan counter-revolutionary groups,” read an Oct. 22, 1982, cable from the office of the CIA’s Directorate of Operations. “These links involve an exchange in [the United States] of narcotics for arms.”
In 1982, the CIA quickly shut down any further reporting on this drug deal, citing the role of U.S. citizens. “In light of the apparent participation of U.S. persons throughout, agree you should not pursue the matter further,” CIA headquarters wrote on Nov. 3, 1982.
During the Inspector General’s investigation, Hitz conducted a follow-up interview, with Contra-connected drug trafficker Renato Pena, who described the redacted U.S. religious organization as a Contra “political ally that provided only humanitarian aid to Nicaraguan refugees and logistical support for contra-related rallies, such as printing services and portable stages.”
Moon’s religious-political groups, some based in the United States, were extremely active supporting the Contras in the early 1980s, suggesting that Moon’s Washington Times might have had more than an ideological reason to attack investigators exploring Contra drug trafficking.
To this day, the Washington Times remains a reliably right-wing voice in the U.S. capital. [Moon died on Sept. 3, 2012.]
Still, the CIA’s shielding of the name of that “religious organization” and similar protective behavior represented a continuation of a long-standing pattern in which U.S. intelligence covered up for right-wing and neo-Nazi criminality, a dark history that began with the likes of Klaus Barbie and has extended “Hitler’s Shadow” to modern times.
Investigative reporter Robert Parry broke many of the Iran-Contra stories for The Associated Press and Newsweek in the 1980s. You can buy his new book, America’s Stolen Narrative, either in print here or as an e-book (from Amazon and barnesandnoble.com). For a limited time, you also can order Robert Parry’s trilogy on the Bush Family and its connections to various right-wing operatives for only $34. The trilogy includes America’s Stolen Narrative. CIA, Moonies versus Sandinistas
Tumblr media
Indiana Gazette  August 16, 1984
by Jack Anderson
WASHINGTON – In the Central American hinterlands, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the CIA’s operatives from the Rev.
The analyst’s unofficial memo, titled “Potential Problems,” has been slipped to my associate Donald Goldberg.
“Current Moonie involvement with government officials, contractors and grantees (in Central America) could create a major scandal,” the memo warns.
But there is no doubt that the Korean Messiah – now in prison for income tax evasion [and forgery and perjury] – has established a solid presence in the region, with ties to right-wing groups and U.S.-supported guerrillas.
My associate John Lee Anderson reports from Central America that CAUSA international, Moon’s political front, has representatives working in programs that help the CIA in its “contra” war against the Sandinista government.
CAUSA maintains a publicity office in Tegucigalpa, the Hondoran capital, but its principal activities are in the field. CAUSA provides cash and other aid to Hondoran-based Nicaraguan contras and Hondoran right-wing political groups.
Footnote: A Unification Church spokesman denied that the church is engaged in any but religious activities in Central America.
