I just saw the cave organ post and it reminded me of possibly my favourite conceptual art piece EVER: Katie Paterson’s Earth-Moon-Earth (Moonlight Sonata Reflected from the Surface of the Moon) which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like! She translated the music to morse code, transmitted that up to the moon, and transcribed the reflection, which is almost the same but not quite because of craters etc in the moon’s surface. She then set it up to play on a pianola (self playing piano) and. It’s just so cool I love it so much
youtube
The sound quality in this recording isn’t great, unfortunately, but the official video in the link above (if you click on the title) has an interview with her over the top. It’s just. So cool

What do you make of the way that children’s literature has changed since you started writing?
I think it probably has changed, but I’m very bad at reading children’s literature or young-adult literature. I like to read adult books. I like to read about people who are my contemporaries. And I’m also bad at keeping up with “the marketplace.” So I’m not really an expert, but it does seem to me, from what I read about, that there is a lot of hard-hitting young-adult fiction now. When I began writing it, that was not the case. My first book [“A Summer to Die”] dealt with the death of my sister. It was published in 1977, and, at the time, it was said that it was one of the very first books for kids that dealt realistically with the death of a young person. Coincidentally, it was published the same year that Katherine Paterson wrote “Bridge to Terabithia.” So it was ironic that she and I did that at the same time.
But that was rare, and it was probably beginning to herald a change in the field. Now nothing is taboo anymore, and there’s a lot of violence, from what I’ve read about. And I think there’s a larger audience for it. In my day, we went from reading children’s books to adult books. There was no middle ground.

43 Literary agents who represent historical fiction
I wanted to include detailed instructions for submission for each, too, but apparently Tumblr has a 4096 letters limit per text block (?!). Good news is: even if I could have included it, it would have just been a copy-paste from their agencies' websites (these are easily googlable: just type in '[name and surname] literary agent' .
Let's go:

Marina de Pass
Liza DeBlock
Sam Farkas
Ciara Finan
Katie Fulford
Hattie Grunewald
Cate Hart
Cassandra Rodgers

Through the Years → Mette-Marit, Crown Princess of Norway (787/∞)
21 May 2023 | Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit visits the Future Library Forest in the Nordmarka forest together with Oslo's mayor Marianne Borgen and German author Judith Schalansky, in Nordmarka, Oslo, Norway. For her art project, Scottish artist Katie Paterson planted in 2014 1,000 Norwegian spruce trees in the Nordmarka forest to grow the materials (paper) for a unique future library of hundred authors's books, which will be printed and read only in hundred years from its begin (2114). Authors are invited to deliver a manuscript, which are held in a specially designed room called The Silent Room in Oslo's main public library building in Bjorvika, next to the Oslo Opera House. Rock Cycle
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6g_1j5j5l8
Rock’s Breaking Point
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh0-9VoyYA8
My partner and I were inspired by how Sophie Williamson organized Undead Matter, a Multi-platform project which explores the organic and non-organic lives that resurface rhythmically over millennia by exploring death and deep time, and Katie Paterson’s Requiem, an exhibition that showcases the life of a planet in a single work. Rocks and Stones have been here since the start of life. One of the first earliest materials to ever exist. They technically have existed before us. They must’ve seen and experienced lots of which we may not have struggled or witnessed. So we thought of creating something that exhibits the life cycle of a rock. The first video personifies the rock as its own person, how it’s been abused by so much physical pain, no matter how big or small. The second video has the rock reprising the role once more, only it emphasizes on how people are mentally hurt inside, but conceal those feelings inside like they are made of steel or a solid rock. It’s basically you look fine on the outside, but the inside is another story.

Katie Paterson Booth (May 23, 1907 - August 26, 2006) The Presbyterian Board of Education sent Booth to be trained in education at Arkadelphia Academy in Arkansas. She remained at that institution for ten years and received a scholarship to attend Philander Smith College, where she earned a BS in Chemistry.
She moved to Chicago during WWII to work in the defense industry. She took a job as a chemist at Doehler-Javis, a die-casting company plant. While there, she started classes at the Illinois Institute of Technology. She was the only African American person in her graduating class, receiving a BS in Industrial Chemistry. She began work as an assistant chemist in the Department of Pharmacology at the Chicago Medical School. She researched preventive health measures. Her main interest was in children’s health and prenatal care, but she worked on treatments for sickle cell anemia.
She married Robert Booth. He fought in WWII, but eight years after it ended, he died from his war injuries. The couple had no children.
She became a community activist during the WWII years. She fought for enhanced funding for children with sickle cell anemia. She served as the chairperson of the West Side YWCA. She was one of the first members of the Chicago Housing Board’s West Side District and served as chairperson of the board of Sears Roebuck charities for the West Side area. She worked for many notable people and organizations during the Civil Rights Movement, including fellow Chicago activist Albert Ruby, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Jesse Jackson, the leader of Operation PUSH. She cautioned civil rights leaders not to fragment their efforts following King’s assassination.
She retired from the field of chemistry in the 1970s, but she remained civically engaged. Her voter registration work in Chicago’s West Side neighborhoods extended back as far as the early 1960s. She helped with a registration drive that led to the election of Harold Washington as mayor.
She moved to Gulfport, Mississippi, to be with her ill sister. In recognition of her work, the facility was renamed the Katie Patterson Booth Community Center. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
