Hello dear readers! A very long time ago, I've been burning with the desire to create a fan-made continuation of a long-abandoned comic.

And in May of this year, on the Russian platform VK, I made the first post dedicated to "Bendy and Boris, the Quest for Ink Machine" Enough time has passed, but I would really like you to be able to appreciate my work. And a wonderful person helps me with this: @kaluu-translator

The plot will be based on canon! But we still have something to surprise you ;)

There’s a lot to love on this original Bill Everett page from Strange Tales #149 (Marvel, 1966) such as how PUNCHABLE Kaluu is drawn in the bottom left panel, and the... uh... interesting male / female pose in the bottom right, but by far my favorite part is the original dialogue written in the margins, where the Ancient One originally says, “Jazz! You gotta use your ectoplasmic self to summon help from the kooky cosmos!”

In just two films, Jordan Peele has become one of America's premier cinematographers, whose influence was recently confirmed by the Writers Guild, which called his script for the satirical parable Get Out the best of the 21st century. His new film with the eloquent and original title Nope (in the Russian Federation it was called “No”, but “Ne-a” would be more correct, although a hidden abbreviation may again await us) is another test for Peel, who will once again have to prove that he deserves confession. As in the case of "Us", there are no plot details, but you can admire an intriguing poster with a large cloud and a cast, in which you can meet the Oscar-winning Daniel Kaluu and Steven Yan, who has gained great momentum in recent years.

"Nope?" Yes indeed!

Jordan Peele's latest film is a departure from Get Out and Us, although it's also a scarcely titled horror film. The film it most closely resembles may be M. Night Shyamalan's Signs, in which the horror was also initiated by an extraterrestrial presence, but what really reminded me of how it combines spectacle and emotional investment is Steven Spielberg in best form . Peele even adds a (gory) visual nod to the finger scene in "E.T." and catchphrase riffs on the Spielberg-produced "Poltergeist."

"Nope" is reminiscent of the early days of the film industry with its protagonists, a brother and sister who train horses for Hollywood. Silent O.J. Haywood (Daniel Kaluuya) and the spirited Emerald Haywood (Keke Palmer) are descendants of the actor/horseman who starred in the very first 1878 film, Fame Their Unknown Progenitor Never Received. "We don't have any more problems," says the father early on. It's a really bad idea to say something like that in a horror movie, and pretty soon the Haywoods have a bunch of problems, including an alien spaceship hovering over their ranch. Sometimes resembling a mushroom and other times a dress designed by Issey Miyake, it hides in a cloud and occasionally sucks up people and animals (i.e. "food"). The Haywoods' knowledge of their horses feeds into their attempts to deal with the alien in a film whose subtext is that animals were not brought here for our use or entertainment.

As in "Get Out" and "Us," Peele likes to make sure we know he's always in control. Quite a few scenes - including the opener on the set of a '90s sitcom where something terrible happens - are confusing at first, but their meaning becomes clear a little later. It's as if Peele, who has a keen sense of what to show and when to show it, taunts us: "You may think you know what's going on, but don't overdo it. It will be revealed in due course."

As a result, you need to pay close attention. You have to trust that Peele will bring it to a satisfactory conclusion. And you have to give it leeway — especially with that awful '90s sitcom stuff that's only loosely connected to everything else.

The friend who went with me suggested that these connections might be clearer on second viewing, and I bet he's right. Peele studies how films make us feel, and Nope is full of things that would make a film lover's heart skip a beat: a Kaluuya moment on horseback quintessentially Sergio Leone. Another horse scene with Michael Abels' music erupting like "How the West Was Won". And the Spielberg-like shift that happens when the characters, who've been feeling hopeless in the face of a gruesome threat, finally switch to problem-solving mode.

It's an exciting scene in a movie that has quite a few of them. If you go this weekend, don't be surprised if you see me there.

I want Doctor Strange 3 being Stephen and Wong learning (via travels and adventures with Clea) that the teachings of the Ancient One on Earth and everything they learned is such a “constrained” magic base.   Like MCU!Earth magic teaching was intentionally shit for some reason to keep them all in check, i dunno

and then like actually introduce the Vishanti, Kaluu and other shit then let them go fucking absolutely apeshit with their magic.

Hi! Your blog is super cool and I wanted to ask: you have a lovely guide for people to read Stephen's comics, and you've also told us your favourite Wong or Clea or other stories. But, I also see like all of us there were stories you disliked or thought was badly written: will you ever consider making a list of comics to avoid if someone loves Stephen, or maybe just list some stuff you hated off the top of your head if that's too much work?

Oh my Vshanti, that's actually an excellent idea! I do have tons of stories I do not like and, while this is obviously my perspective and opinions, people can always feel free to read them or not.

Stephen has a relative consistency but sometimes, just sometimes, the stories are really really really bad. I'll make a list stating the reasons for sure!

1 - Doctor Strange v2 - Master of the Mystic Arts #50-53

Although I'm always eager to read stories in which Nightmare looks for Stephen's help, this one here is... not good enough. First, because of Morgana Blessing. I've made some posts on her and why I have many reasons to dislike her, but in here, it gets to the point of past lives and I dunno, it feels problematic to say the least... Also this is the reason why Clea left (and v2 overall is basically Clea feeling insecure about her powers and her relationship with Stephen, which is boring and uninteresting). The next issue (#54) will show how Stephen is dependent on Clea, and it's a good chapter, but I'd skip the ones with Morgana.

2 - Strange Tales v2

Yes. The whole run. The last issues of Doctor Strange v2 are bad enough due to the way Stephen's downfall towards dark magic is portrayed, but Strange Tales v2 takes the cake. He "kills" a man, he lies to Victoria and steals her powers, he becomes Kaluu's apprentice, he loses an eye (?) and becomes a diva (?) god, then he dies and is resurrected. I don't mind Stephen falling into a darker path, but only when it's well-written (as in, Hickman's New Avengers). This is not it.

3 - Doctor Strange - Sorcerer Supreme #60-90

It's the 90's. But I have far more reasons to dislike these stories. The moment Salomé strikes is the moment everything good about the lore so far goes down like a lead balloon. Imei is killed off (and later used as a tool to put Wong against Stephen), Clea leaves to lead the rebellion, Stephen’s self is split into three and lastly, the story I hate the most, Mordo gaslighting Stephen since he was just a kid, which leads him to consume alcohol (something that I’ll gladly ignore, especially in current runs).

4 - Uncanny Origins #12

This is the only, and I repeat, ONLY story in Stephen’s entire chronology in which Eugene is portrayed as an abusive father. And I don’t agree with that because what leads Stephen to become a cold man is Donna’s death. Eugene hardly appears in stories so it’s kinda odd to read that he was a terrible father, especially when Stephen talks to his family’s "ghosts” about how much he misses them and Eugene is there as well.

5 - Witches #1-4

I just dislike Stephen’s patronizing and arrogant portrayal in this, especially towards Topaz and Jennifer. It feels almost as if he was sexist.

6 - Avengers v1 #502-503; House of M #1-8

We can just all agree that HoM is a bad portrayal for 1) women; 2) WOC and 3) women struggling with mental health. I’ve talked about this before so I’m just summing it all up. Besides, Stephens lack of empathy while a doctor is just... yikes.

7 - X-Statix Presents - Deadgirl #1-5

This book isn’t bad for Stephen but it is really problematic in some senses (as in, a sexist black man falling in love with a racist white woman :S), not to mention TAO being used as a villain here. It’s not entirely canon (but it also it is because Deadgirl is working at Strange Academy so Idk). Anyways, pass.

8 - Fearless Defenders #9

You’d just know I’d add this story. It’s just bad and it pretty much ruins Stephen’s character by portraying him as a cheater and generally a sexist piece of garbage. It’s not only Stephen, tho. Cullen Bunn did that to all men involved with the female protagonists ew.

9 - Doctor Strange v5 #1-20

10 - Empyre - X-Men #1; #4

I really hate how Stephen was portrayed here, especially when it comes to his relationship with Wanda.

11 - Strange Academy

I’m just so done with this book. I don’t even have the strength anymore to explain why it’s so bad. I’m tired.

12 - Captain Marvel v10 #27-30

I really like Stranvers but the way Stephen was used as a fling only for Carol to rekindle her relationship with Rhodes was disgusting, not to mention how they ended up in bad terms. BIG YIKES. Plus the blatant BAIT on the covers.

13 - Defenders v4

Everything but the art sucks in this book, from Stephen’s portrayal to the story itself. Don’t waste your time (and that comes from someone who loves Norrin and Stephen interacting!!)

(dis)honorable mention: Death of Doctor Strange - Bloodstone. Stephen doesn’t appear but it’s just bad for him. Really bad.

Aaaaand this is basically the stories I dislike the most. I’ll certainly add more in the future, but let’s hope it’s not a habit /rip

HISTÓRIA:

Yao nasceu há milênios, na mística cidade de Kamar-Taj, um vilarejo na região do Himalaia hoje conhecida como Tibete. Originalmente, o jovem era um fazendeiro pacífico, como seus companheiros de vila. Mais tarde, ele encontrou um aldeão mais velho chamado Kaluu. Kaluu compartilhou com o jovem seu conhecimento de magia, e eles começaram a explorar os segredos da feitiçaria juntos, aprendendo até mesmo os segredos da imortalidade. Juntos, eles lançaram um feitiço que removeu doenças, pobreza e sofrimento de sua aldeia e concedeu a seu povo a imortalidade.

Em 1350 DC, a Igreja Católica fez contato com Kamar Taj abrindo a comunicação. Isso levou ao despertar de Varnae, o Vampiro, que veio para Kamar Taj e manipulou Kaluu. Yao queria continuar a usar sua magia para ajudar a aldeia, mas Kaluu queria construir um vasto império e organizou os homens de Kamar-Taj em um exército controlando magicamente suas mentes. Yao tentou avisar a aldeia, mas Kaluu usou sua magia para incapacitar o menino, paralisando-o. O jovem convocou forças místicas enquanto estava em seu estado paralítico, banindo Kaluu para a dimensão de Cyttorak.

Um jovem Yao roubou um mapa dos Cavaleiros do Nunca e o imprimiu magicamente em seu braço. Ele tentou escapar, mas acabou sendo capturado, espancado e preso. Sua punição por roubar o mapa foi apodrecer na prisão. No entanto, o mago Merlin apareceu e resgatou o menino. Merlin recrutou o jovem místico para se juntar a outros Feiticeiros Supremos ao longo do tempo para derrotar os Esquecidos.

Ainda jovem, Yao decidiu procurar uma ordem de antigos usuários de magia conhecidos como os Antigos, a fim de dedicar toda a sua vida ao objetivo de combater os feiticeiros do mal. O jovem eventualmente se tornou ainda mais habilidoso do que seus colegas, e cresceu em poder tão grande que ele foi o primeiro mortal da Terra a se encontrar com a Eternidade, a personificação senciente do universo, que o presenteou com o Amuleto de Agamotto e o encarregou de se tornar o Feiticeiro Supremo da dimensão da Terra.

Em suas viagens, ele coletou artefatos místicos de todo o mundo. Em 1367 DC, Plan Chu procurou a ajuda do Ancião, que ajudou a trazer para a Fundação Atlas o dragão conhecido como Sr. Lao, que foi um conselheiro de longa data do Império Khan. No século 15, ele teve seu primeiro aluno, um jovem em busca de conhecimento, que estudou por muitos anos com Yao, até que foi pego praticando magia das trevas, e foi banido. Durante suas andanças, Yao descobriu o Templo de Cyttorak na Coréia e lutou contra o Demônio Xorak, o Pária, e o prendeu à Joia Carmesim de Cyttorak. Em 1666 DC, enquanto estava em Londres, ele conseguiu banir Dormammu e proteger a Terra contra sua influência maligna, mas não antes de declarar o "Grande Incêndio de Londres".

Em 1862, o Ancião ficou irritado com as obras do famoso naturalista Charles Darwin. Depois de ler a Origem das Espécies, ele trouxe Darwin para Kamar-Taj para lhe ensinar uma lição, que havia mais na realidade do que sua ciência, teletransportando-o para a Terra-95019, um mundo governado por macacos e símios. O Ancião mais tarde encontrou o Cavaleiro Negro quando o mesmo visitou a cidade de Nova York. Eles se uniram para impedir uma rede de prostituição em Chinatown.

Antes da guerra, Heinrich Krowler influenciou seu neto, o barão Karl Mordo, a procurar o Ancião na esperança de obter seu conhecimento. No entanto, o Ancião percebeu sua necessidade de um sucessor e concordou em ser o tutor de Mordo. Embora ele reconhecesse as ambiç��es malignas de Mordo em sua mente, ele decidiu que poderia fazer o seu melhor para converter Mordo ao serviço do bem, ou pelo menos mantê-lo sob controle.

Algum tempo depois, o Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange, M.D., um cirurgião talentoso, mas arrogante e um tanto amoral, sofreu ferimentos nas mãos em um acidente automobilístico, que infligiu lesões em sua rede de nervos que o impediram de segurar ferramentas cirúrgicas com total firmeza. Depois de desperdiçar uma fortuna multimilionária em esforços para restaurar a estabilidade pré-lesão de suas mãos, o Ancião em sua forma astral o protegeu quando ele ingeriu MGH, forçando-o a reiniciar seu coração. Mais tarde, Strange procurou os serviços do Ancião para seus próprios propósitos. Mas ele logo se viu tentando salvar o Ancião de uma trama que Mordo estava tentando executar. O Ancião dispensou Mordo, e Strange concordou em permanecer como o novo aluno do Ancião.

Na era moderna dos heróis, o Doutor Estranho havia se tornado um conhecido místico operando em seu Sanctum em Greenwich Village. Ele ocasionalmente precisava da ajuda do Ancião. O Barão Mordo logo ressurgiu e usou seus poderes para tentar eliminar o Ancião. O Barão Mordo controlou o assistente do Ancião para envenena-lo, e, sentindo seu mestre em apuros, Estranho lutou contra Mordo em sua forma ectoplásmica, impedindo Mordo de acabar com a vida do Ancião.

Mais tarde ainda, o Ancião foi feito prisioneiro pelo chamado Buda Vivo e demônios menores chamados de Shadowmen, todos os quais serviam o demônio extra dimensional Shuma-Gorath. O Ancião foi feito de refém para servir como um portal para trazer o demônio para a Terra, mas ele reteve poder suficiente para fazer de sua própria mente o único canal através do qual Shuma-Gorath poderia viajar. O Ancião morreu nas Criptas de Kaa-U, em seu Tibete natal, onde os corpos de todos os falecidos Feiticeiros Supremos do continuum da Terra estão enterrados, impedindo assim a ascensão de Shuma-Gorath. Uma vez que o espírito do Ancião se unificou com tudo, ele veio ao Doutor Estranho, aliviando a culpa do médico por ter tido que acabar com a vida de seu próprio mestre e concedendo a seu pupilo o manto do novo Feiticeiro Supremo do reino. Mas ele continuou a guiá-lo em suas aventuras.
