19-year-old southpaw Jackie Mitchell, of the House of David baseball team, speaks to her teammates while in New York, July 14, 1933. Mitchell was the first and only woman to have a contract in Major League baseball, with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Two years earlier, in an exhibition game during spring training, she had struck out both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth―in six pitches.
There is some controversy about that―not that it didn’t happen, because there is a film of it―but as to whether the Yankee aces were doing it just for show. Mitchell always maintained that it was genuine. “Why, hell, they were trying, damn right,” she said. “Hell, better hitters than them couldn’t hit me. Why should they’ve been any different?”
Timothy Wiles, who served as the Baseball Hall of Fame Research Director for about 20 years, said, “If she did this today, it would become a permanent part of the consciousness because of the media we have. If ESPN was around, it certainly would be their lead story.”
Mitchell was quoted at the time saying she learned to throw from her neighbor, MLB's Charles Arthur “Dazzy” Vance, who was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her contract was cancelled by baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis after he heard about her spring training feat in 1931.

Animal of the Day!
Whooping Crane (Grus americana)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Endangered
Habitat- Central North America
Size (Weight/Length)- 7 kg; 150 cm
Diet- Mollusks; Amphibians; Insects; Crustaceans; Berries; Fish; Small mammals
Cool Facts- Being only one of the two species of crane in North America, the whooping crane has done the remarkable. Whooping cranes were almost pushed to extinction by 1941. Mass hunting throughout the 1800s resulted in thousands of the birds being shot for feathers, trophies, and museum specimens. By 1941, there were only 21 wild adults and two captive ones. In 1960, the National Audubon Society stepped in and pushed the whooping crane’s story into national spotlight and resulted in their placement on the Endangered Species List. Through captive breeding and habitat restoration, whooping crane numbers have increased to over 800 wild individuals. Today, these monogamous birds can be seen hunting on mudflats and migrating over 4,000 kilometers from their feeding to breeding grounds.
Rating- 13/10 (Learns how to migrate through the use of ultralight aircrafts.)

Reminder that 'Bastille day' means nothing in France and it's a term invented by Anglos to define the Fête Nationale or even more commonly, 14 Juillet. If you wish a Happy Bastille day to people in the streets, they won't know what you're talking about. Also, July 14th is about the storming of the Bastille and the Fête de la Fédération in 1790.
