19-year-old southpaw Jackie Mitchell, of the House of David baseball team, speaks to her teammates while in New York, July 14, 1933. Mitchell was the first and only woman to have a contract in Major League baseball, with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Two years earlier, in an exhibition game during spring training, she had struck out both Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth―in six pitches.

There is some controversy about that―not that it didn’t happen, because there is a film of it―but as to whether the Yankee aces were doing it just for show. Mitchell always maintained that it was genuine. “Why, hell, they were trying, damn right,” she said. “Hell, better hitters than them couldn’t hit me. Why should they’ve been any different?”

Timothy Wiles, who served as the Baseball Hall of Fame Research Director for about 20 years, said, “If she did this today, it would become a permanent part of the consciousness because of the media we have. If ESPN was around, it certainly would be their lead story.”

Mitchell was quoted at the time saying she learned to throw from her neighbor, MLB's Charles Arthur “Dazzy” Vance, who was later inducted into the Hall of Fame. Her contract was cancelled by baseball commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis after he heard about her spring training feat in 1931.

one of my favourite pieces of 20th century history is the fact that babe ruth once got struck out by a seventeen year old.

usa’s (arguably) most famous baseball player got struck out by a fucking seventeen year old. just so we’re clear, this happened after he hit over 50 homeruns in one season.

and he wasn’t the only one. lou gehrig got the same treatment.

Film after film: Widows (dir. Steve McQueen, 2018)

Plot-wise, it's just okay, but actorly it's a great pleasure. I love Davis when she plays roles that are not so in-your-face showy, with the proverbial "snot out of nose" crying (see this year's Air too). Here she's more steely but also vulnerable, as the wife of a (seemingly) dead criminal, who is coerced into paying his debts and aims to complete a job that originally he planned. There are some plot twists and turns, sometimes impressive and well staged, but it's predominantly an actor's film. Kaluuya stands out as the most evil person alive.

Let's write a dw episode and choose some companions for the 9th Doctor (step 2A)

We are writing a dw episode with the 9th, the 10th and the 13th Doctor and are currently figuring out their respective companions.

The last poll determined that most people want the companion of the ninth Doctor to come from the Rose Tyler-Era. So, in this poll I will present you some options from that era and you will decide who you want to accompany the Doctor the most.

There were however, quite a few people who wanted a series 10 or classic companion and the Paternoster Gang was mentioned twice in the tags. Because I love those options there will be a part B (to be found soon in the reblogs) where I will present you additional options pulled from there.

Once both polls are analysed you will then get to put together your companion team from the most popular options!

If I forgot someone vital, please let me know in the tags. That is entirely possible as I have seen next to nothing of series 2 and about half of series 1. If you inform me, they might just make it into the final round ;)

Mitchell wrote terrible novels but I'm just enjoying that he described Meres as "beautiful" in them, frequently. Like happened in two separated occasions. And recalling the fact he had a low-key crush on a Spanish spy once (whom he deemed as inspiration for Callan)
