please I need everyone to listen to the “Thrawn” audiobooks. the moment in the first book where Arihnda Pryce is betraying her bestie Juahir is golden. the narrator has given her like an american valley girl accent and she yells, so scandalized and betrayed, “Arihnda!” and it’s so funny, he says each syllable with the accent it’s-oh my god it’s fantastic
and now I say it every time I am slightly annoyed lmao

Day 12:  Angstober  “Eyes”
Fandom:  Star Wars (Thrawn)
Words:  100
“Madras still writes to you?” Thrawn glanced to the Oovo 4 stamp marring the message stacked atop her correspondence.
“Should have her executed just to stop them,” Pryce snapped.  “A waste of flimsi.”
The Grand Admiral picked up the letter, scanned silently.
Pryce never read them.  Once she’d tried, but desperate words blurred with painful memories of Juahir’s pleading, tear-filled eyes when her hypocrisy was revealed.  Pryce had suggested that one day, she would secure Juahir’s release.  But that was merely revenge for the betrayal—false hope.  A lie for a lie.
“Incinerator,” she scowled.
Thrawn complied, tossing it in.

Arihnda Pryce propaganda, taken from her Wookiepedia page, about her backstory as revealed in Thrawn:
When Arihnda was in her mid-thirties, Azadi, then the Governor of the Lothal sector, sought access to Pryce Mining's doonium mines. He sent one of his staffers Arik Uvis to buy another 21 percent stake in the company, giving him a controlling interest. However, Arihnda rejected the offer. In retaliation, Governor Azadi's office framed Arihnda's mother Elainye for embezzlement. She later conferred with Talmoor and realized that Uvis was behind her mother's trumped up charges. In desperation, Pryce sought the help of Lothal's Senator Domus Renking, who agreed to to help Pryce's mother by shifting the blame onto the Lutrillian heavy equipment inventory operations manager Pomi Harchmak. To prevent Azadi from taking over the company, Renking persuaded Arihnda to sign over the rights of her company to the Empire. With little choice, Pryce accepted Renking's terms and sold Pryce Mining to the Empire and started working at one of Renking's citizen assistance offices on Coruscant.
At an Imperial ball, Senator Renking dispatched Pryce on an assignment to deliver a datacard to Moff Ghadi. He instructed her to tell Ghadi to load the card onto a secure datapad, download the files, and then return the card to his office. At Moff Ghadi's office, Pryce learned that Senator Renking had planted false data in the card. Moff Ghadi handed a different card and then sprayed her with polstine spice, a highly illegal drug that could earn one life imprisonment. With Pryce in legal trouble, Moff Ghadi blackmailed her into returning the datacard to Senator Renking's office. Due to the resulting cut in funding from the scandal, Senator Renking closed down Pryce's workplace; when Pryce tried to explain that she had no choice, he dismissed her for her naivety and demanded the return of her airspeeder key. He also evicted her from her apartment and sent several Ugnaughts to clear out her personal effects.
A year afterward, Pryce's friend Driller invited Arihnda to join his Higher Skies advocacy group, seeking to utilize her expertise in mines, mining, and refining, a position she accepted hoping to move back into the centers of political power. However, Higher Skies was spying on senior Imperial officers, and Moff Ghadi ordered Pryce to copy all of Higher Skies' files, report on all their conversations, and to make a list of their contacts, threatening to turn her into the Imperial Security Bureau if she didn't. Deciding to use Grand Moff Tarkin against Ghadi to get revenge on the latter, Pryce revealed to him that Higher Skies was using bodyguards to spy on high-ranking Imperial officials and senators and supplied a voice recording proving that Ghadi ordered her to collect Higher Skies' information about Tarkin and to send it to him, providing ample evidence of a high official conspiring to use illegally obtained data to topple another high official. In return for providing information on Lothal's economic and society, Pryce convinced the Grand Moff to appoint her Governor of Lothal as a means of exacting her revenge on Governor Azadi and Senator Renking for taking her parents' mining company from them. Pryce reasoned that being made Governor would humiliate the former and make it easier to take down the latter. Using her information, Pryce got Driller, Higher Skies, and her other friend Juahir arrested for rebel activities; she blames Juahir for manipulating her into helping the rebels and throws her under the bus for the sake of gaining power:
"'I'm on the road to power now [...] If I achieve my goals, I should be able to pull enough strings to get you out in a few years. If not...' She shrugged." (305)
"Mistress Arihnda [...] The title of the small and powerless. But she was done with it now. Done with it forever. Governor Pryce. Yes, that was better." (306)
Arihnda Pryce was appointed Acting Governor of the Lothal sector after Azadi was charged with treason by the Galactic Empire and imprisoned. As governor, after learning that Pryce Mining's doonium vein had been exhausted, she ordered that the company be shut down, screwing over Renking, while having a concealed vein be mined in secret. For the next several months, Pryce spent her time in Lothal's Capital City entrenching the Empire's presence on Lothal. The Empire expanded industry on Lothal, expanded the mines, and increased their military presence on the planet. Despite protests from local farmers who had their lands expropriated for building new factories, military facilities, and mines, Pryce was unmoved and believed that the Imperial presence would bring prosperity and employment opportunities. Several months later, she tricked Renking into bribing Governor Sanz and got him arrested for it, then ignored messages from Juahir from prison.
Finally, during the rebel takeover of Creekpath Mining and Refining complex, Pryce managed to convince Colonel Yularen that she could aid the Empire by gathering intelligence on the insurgents' defenses and weapons setup while evacuating her parents. After learning that the ISB agent who accompanied her was actually there to blow up the complex, Pryce shot him dead and blew up Gudry's planted explosives to hide the body; the resulting explosion killed all of the insurgents within the mine, Yularen's retrieval squad, and many civilians living near the complex. She then claimed Gudry set off the bombs and convinced Thrawn to take credit for the whole shitshow.
TLDR; her life got completely ruined multiple times by the machinations of those in power, so she decided to ruin their lives right back by taking away their livelihoods and getting them arrested. This culminates in her blowing a great deal of people to hell for the sake of getting away with doing what she wants.

Unfortunately
And I truly do regret this
“have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other.” is such an Arihnda sentiment
Like it’s meta, she’s not gonna actively think those exact words (tho honestly a lot of what happens with her and Juahir is… close…) but my god it is correct about her

I can't stop thinking about the scene where Arihnda and Yularen arrest Juahir because it shows how intense and singleminded Arihnda's focus on power is. Juahir is begging her friend to listen to her, to understand that the only reason she was trying to harm the Empire was that she saw how badly Senator Renking treated Arihnda, and Arihnda's response to her best friend literally risking her life to better the world is "If you cooperate with Yularen I'll try to make sure you don't get executed." Like that's it. Juahir is one of Arihnda's two real friends (and the other one is also being arrested on Arihnda's orders!) - she got Arihnda the advocacy job, let her live in her apartment, and helped her with self-defense training after her attack, and Arihnda is entirely willing, even excited to throw all of it away to become Governor of Lothal.

Gays in the Empire
@zara2148 and I are talking about the Thrawn books and how Governor Arihnda Pryce has her martial artist girlfriend Juahir (book quote), and Thrawn's got his boyfriend Eli Vanto.
And like, there's a whole plot arc about how Pryce helps Thrawn get in Tarkin's good books, and once he does that, Tarkin (another canon queer) basically gives them all promotions and gets Thrawn's ship fast-tracked to be repaired. Which to me, is just mlm and wlw solidarity at it's finest. The Empire is a racist, sexist, bigoted beast, so the gays gotta help each other out when they can, ya feel?
Also, there's the bit about how Darth Vader Promotes Agent Kallus to Commander after they work together (source) which to me, is some bi/pan solidarity.

omg i’d love to hear your thoughts on thrawn (2017) 👀👀👀
So basically:
Tumblr media
This is all very disjointed bc I finished the book today, but here are my initial thoughts
I really liked Eli’s character, especially to serve as the link to the reader. Thrawn is such a high level, intellectual menace, that it was especially good to see someone else struggle with him. Eli’s growth was also exceptional, and we love to see a yeehaw win.
One of the biggest unexpected things I enjoyed was Pryce. How dare this book make her so fucking interesting. And now, knowing the poetry of her death? Amazing. The relationship between her and Juahir is something I’d been missing in my other Star Wars readings and it really paid off here.
Nightswan, my beloved. I listened to the audio book, and I got to the cornfield conversation while waiting in line for a Covid test instead of driving, which is usually how I read. I was glad to be able to sit and focus on it, and like Thrawn, I was disappointed, but I understood why he returned to Creek Path. His story is especially fascinating, especially as a foil to Thrawn. If he’d lived, imagine the hell he would’ve caused. Also? “Even Palpatine cannot live forever” — you’ve got a big storm comin, buddy.
The final chapter in the Throne room? Chills.
I know why we didn’t get to see Thrawn’s thoughts on sending Eli away, but I imagine he foresaw the Emperor and Vader’s reaction to his knowledge of the Death Star. Knowing Vader’s….volatile nature….sending Eli to the Chiss was also probably a move to physically shield him from any incurred wrath.
He’s a little, fascist weirdo, but he does protect who and what he loves fiercely — which is why I’m also excited to see him and Vader together in the next book. That one hasn’t been as spoiled for me, so I’m going in nearly blind. Can’t wait.

Thrawn. Review. Now.
I really enjoyed this book. Note, I consumed it as audio book while doing my daily (and increasingly) long, socially-distant, masked (my yellow mask is so fancy it’s really not I look like I’m about to botch a bank robbery), parkouring out of the way of other people runs.
Anyway, it’s a good audiobook.
I really like how Thrawn is presented here. Now, it’s been a loooong time since I read the original Zahn novels in high school during class when I was supposed to be learning or something (little did I know my Star Wars obsession would span decades past my non-illustrious, teenaged scholastic life), but if I’m remembering correctly, the Thrawn of the original Zahn novels was an equally genius tactician, but slightly more malevolent.
This Thrawn, however - just operates on a totally different plane of morality and existence than the sentients of the Empire. Which is a fascinating insight into the Chiss as they have no framework for the politics of the Empire. (Supposedly. I’ll find out in the next two novels.)
And that makes it interesting. Thrawn isn’t an Imperial, he’s not a Rebel, he’s...something else, entirely, operating on his own moral code, his own plans, and is resolute about it. The Empire is just a means for him and his people and this is such a fascinating take. Makes you really wonder what’s going on in Wild Space and the Unknown Regions.
Eli. Vanto. Yes. I love my space cowboys and Eli joins Rael Averross in the pantheon of awesome Wild West GFFA figures. It’s also really telling that Thrawn first thought Eli was a plant but as he got to know him, he instead trained the young man to be a tactician. I think the fact that a) Ali was flexible enough to learn Sy Bisti and b) never threw Thrawn under the bus, even when he could have, said a lot about his character, which seemed to be a far more important characteristic to Thrawn than actual achievements.
The Emperor is Creepy. As. Fuck. in the audio version. Well-done, but still, yikes.
Anakin Skywalker? *That* Anakin Skywalker? Jesus, Thrawn, that’s not name-dropping, that’s name a-bombing.
The card scene and the subsequent ambush at the Academy are great scenes. But not to be topped by “Meet the Parents” starring Eli Vanto, Mr. and Mrs. Vanto, and Thrawn. I *cackled* all the way through that one.
I actually liked having the Pryce scenes. It was really kind of tragic to watch her go from a well-meaning, if ambitious person to someone so cold-hearted. It really emphasized what kind of person one needed to become in order to succeed politically in the Empire. Which says a lot about the institution and its values. Not that I’m going to extrapolate onto a certain country I live in at the moment. *AHEM* (thank the gods I live in a civilized state)
(But was I the only one who thought she and Juahir were kind of having a thing or am I nuts?)
I have to admit, I almost choked when the name Umbara first came up. Not cool.
I also love this idea of Thrawn failing upwards. Not that he ever failed, but that he kept being brought before tribunal after tribunal and each time seemed to be rewarded for it. Poor Eli’s ulcer must have been the size of an ocean.
Okay, but seriously, Eli as a rogue-arms-dealer was beautiful and the fac that Thrawn basically pulled a Jake Peralta in saying “Your name is Horatio Figg and here is your backstory. Also, here is a sullied tunic and please grease your hair back like me for no reason whatsoever.” Amazing scene. I *cackled*.
We all realize that this book is totally predicated on opaque military tactics, hologirds (aka spreadsheets) of mining supply and shipments, and the petty dramas of politics? And yet it is fascinating. Like a Victorian drama of manners where so little means so much. Or perhaps even when we’re not dealing in Thrawn’s journal, we’re seeing this all through his lens.
By the way, Thrawn gave Eli his journal??? What???
THE SCENE WITH THE  EMPEROR AND VADER. Thrawn just casually drops the name “Death Star” I mean, I almost fell off the god damn curb. And then fucking Anakin walks in. DAMNIT ANAKIN.
I can’t wait to see how Eli functions in the Chiss Ascendancy. I feel like they’re gong to love him like one might a very capable golden retriever.
Great book, slightly slow in sections but 9/10.

More Pryce stuff from Wookipedia:
"Later, Pryce and Tarkin met with Admiral Konstantine and the ISB Agent Kallus on the bridge of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Konstantine disagreed with Pryce's assessment that the Phoenix Group posed a serious threat and dismissed them as a localized insurgency. At that point, they were joined by the decorated Imperial officer, Thrawn, who had recently been promoted for his role in suppressing the rebel presence in the Batonn sector. When Kallus expressed concerns about the high civilian casualties, Pryce justified Thrawn's actions on the grounds that the rebel presence there had been eradicated, showing her disregard for innocent lives."
"After capturing the rebellious cadets, Governor Pryce confronted the three youths. She was about to torture Wedge with an electronic torture device when Sabine identified herself as the rebel agent. While Agent Kallus took the other prisoners to a holding cell, Pryce proceeded to question Sabine. When Sabine refused to talk, Pryce brought up a glyph of her file and 'welcomed' the former cadet back to the Imperial Academy."
"Governor Pryce along with Agent Kallus and Lieutenant Yogar Lyste were present when Thrawn gave a speech berating the workers for their poor craftsmanship. Pryce smirked after a test demonstration with a sabotaged 614-AvA speeder bike claimed the life of factory worker and undercover rebel operative Morad Sumar."
"Pryce had the captured Hera Syndulla strapped to an interrogation chair in her office, where she sadistically tortured the rebel general with electrical charges for her own pleasure. When Grand Admiral Thrawn entered and asked if Syndulla had confessed to anything, Pryce remarked that she hadn't asked any questions yet."
"Rukh failed to prevent them from escaping, but informed Pryce that they were heading for the fuel depot. Pryce, in full combat armor, led a contingent of AT-AT walkers to the depot where she saw Kanan and Hera about to board a stolen gunship. Determined to stop them, Pryce ordered the pilots to fire on the central fuel pod; when the pilot protested due to the valuable fuel, Pryce overrode him by stating that she had given him a direct order. The walker then fired on the fuel pod, causing a chain reaction which destroyed the entire depot and killed Jarrus as he saved his friends."
"Arihnda Pryce was an ambitious individual who looked down upon her Lothalian roots [...] While Pryce befriended the martial arts instructor Juahir Madras and the advocate Driller MarDapp, she turned against them after learning that their advocacy group Higher Skies was spying on high-ranking Imperial officials and was working with the rebel insurgent known as Nightswan."
"While she was from Lothal, she had no interest in remaining there and coveted the glamour of Coruscant. She sold out her homeworld to the Emperor and allowed the Galactic Empire to make Lothal their local headquarters in the Lothal sector. She placed her own ambitions and career aspirations over the interests of the Lothalian people; this stood in contrast to her deputy ruler, Maketh Tua, who genuinely cared for the people. She rarely visited Lothal and only returned to her homeworld because the planet had become a haven for rebels about two years before the Battle of Yavin."
