Chapter 56: Tripitaka and Wukong
(note: I just started reading chapter 56, so I don't have the complete information)
I found it super strange that Tripitaka is GENUINELY shocked that Wukong killed the bandits, I was under the impression he expected that of Wukong from watching OSP's videos. Like he doesn't even take Bajie seriously when he told him that the Bandits were killed.
Tumblr media
at first I found it strange that Tripitaka straight up seemed shocked that Wukong killed them, when all he have been doing in the book was murder left and right, when I realised something. Most of these murders were done without Tripitaka's knowledge. In Tripitaka's perspective:
Golden and Silver horned demons - It is unsure if he saw the demon going into the vase.
Ghost King - no murder
Red Boy - no murder
Iguana Dragon - no murder
3 Daoist sage - 3 sages were killed though it would be hard to pin the blame on Wukong since he was sneaky about it
Guanyin's fish - no murder
Golden helmet demon - no murder
Kingdom of Women - no murder
Last time he saw Wukong kill someone was during the White Bone Demon arc at longest and at least it would be from the 3 Daoist sage. Did he believe that Wukong changed? What is more interesting is just seeing Tripitaka's reaction to the whole situation, he prays for the Bandits and is snappy towards Wukong, even going as far an insulting him. (Like even I was concerned, he never does that in story before, sure he may call his disciples ugly and all, but I cannot think of a time where he insulted them)
Tumblr media
Tripitaka ask their souls to only file a complaint against Wukong, as he warned them and other 3 (Bajie, Wujing, and horse) took no part in this, which makes Wukong laugh and pins the blame on Tripitaka.
Tumblr media
His argument is on the same level as teenagers who go "well I didn't ask to be born, so it is your fault" or "I didn't ask to go to school, so don't be surprised that I am failing." Which makes Tripitaka even more shocked and upset at Wukong who doesn't even show an inch of remorse during this whole situation. He even says that his prayer was meant to make Wukong appreciate life and become more virtuous, Which Wukong makes fun of.
Tumblr media
It is so interesting to read these 2 during this arc so far because you can see how they are starting to become estranged to one another.
Tripitaka throughout this arc is so shocked and upset at Wukong's actions, while Wukong is showing no remorse and is instead finding humour in it and pushing the responsibility to Tripitaka, making this whole situation worse.
you can even see at the end of the last image Tripitaka is trying hard to contain his anger and not lash out and instead ignore this.

Chapter 8
So unfortunately this week I have no sketches for the chapter due to slight burn out and work related reasons (also I had completely forgotten we get introduced to the pilgrims minus Sanzang in this chapter and their designs are anything but ready). As a result, I'm just going to write my thoughts.
@journeythroughjourneytothewest
First things first: Guanyin. I love Guanyin. They're just so calm about being attacked by two monsters and letting Hui'an handle combat. It also shows the sheer difference in strength between the four disciples, after seeing the trouble that he went through fighting Sun Wukong. Guanyin is a true being of mercy, not really making a big fuss out of being attacked and I commend them for it, I would be chewing Zhu and Sha's heads off. Though the "Perhaps in Two or Three Years" answer they gave the great Immortal, I'll need to pay attention to how much time passes to see if that's accurate (but I recall the full journey takes 14 years? Correct me if I'm wrong).
Next up: Sha Wujing. So after I'd previously read the Abridged Version, I was utterly confused as to why the Jade Emperor was petty enough to punish this poor man for BREAKING A CUP. Then I found a comic by antidotefortheawkward that explained how breaking a cup could be seen as a signal to attack. And I was like "...ah. That makes more sense now." Still a little petty, not hearing him out, but it made sense that it would be his first thought. Especially if he was cast out AFTER Sun Wukong's Havoc. I don't think we got a clear answer on that timeline (again feel free to correct me!). Even if he did eat people, I still love this pilgrim and can't wait for his chapter.
Next: Zhu Wuneng, aka Zhu Bajie. Quick to lower his weapon for a woman, lol. Jokes aside, it seems as though he's very unlucky with women (and vice versa). There is his flirting with the Moon Goddess (which is still unclear if it was consensual or unwelcomed, that would change my opinion of how this all went down), him killing his new form's mother and siblings (I've heard people say human flesh tastes like pork, so I guess that's where he got the taste for it, huh?), and the death of Second Elder Sister Egg (and him getting all her stuff). Unlike Sha Wujing, it does feel like Zhu Wuneng was begging a lot more for mercy. But Guanyin chose to believe his intent as being genuine, so he will be the next disciple.
Next: OUR DRAGON BOY. I'm gonna call him Bai Longma, as that's the name most know him by. I feel out of all of these, his punishment was the most unfair, and the fact that his father went to the Jade Emperor and seemed to be just fine with a DEATH SENTENCE honestly kills me. Like, I feel as though everyone was so on edge after Sun Wukong that punishments just amped up. I am glad Guanyin immediately jumped to his defense, and as a result got Sanzang a much better mount than any old horse.
And finally: Sun Wukong. Our old monkey. And the start of my favorite relationship in the story (the friendship between Guanyin and Wukong). Sun Wukong is still very bitter of Tathagata's trick but appears willing to do what he must to get free, though knowing what I do, I'm already thinking "Uh huh. Sure. Whatever you say, Great Sage" in a sarcastic tone. But that's for another chapter.
And with that, Guanyin continues their own journey to Chang'an to find our Tang Sanzang.
All in all, a very short but important chapter, setting the stage for journey and meeting the key players.
I probably will be doing more writing than drawing for the next few chapters (minus the intro to Sanzang), to both get off this burn out and because I don't recall any characters that show up more in the story aside from these chapters, so I don't see a point in making a design for them.

"Lord give me on more chance"
"Will this be the last one, I wonder?"
Tumblr media
This drawing is based off a song and how qiang met guanyin
Yang Jian was about to kill qiang but then GuanYin showed up and saved him from death, but since qiang still needed to be punished got robbing, and attacking a celestial, and murdering another GuanYin assigned Yang Jian to give qiang a punishment other than death since qiang is important for DESTINY
So that's where the river comes in 👍😋

I'M NOT FOWCKING DEAD!!!!!!!
I'm so sorry y'all. Irl business be hittin hard and I have a ton of projects and tests coming up guys.
BUT
one of the art projects I'm working on requires stickers and I just finished them and figured hopefully you guys would like them to,
The mooncakes took way too much time and you might've noticed I've kinda cheated and re-used a sticker of Chang'E and Hou Yi but shhhh..... (they don't know that)
First time I've drawn Guanyin...or Erlang...or Nuwa...OK Fine. I probably should vary who I draw.
Wukong in the opera costume! Don't get me wrong, I love the lmk fit but I wanted to put him in something a little more...regal. Something befitting the great sage equal to heaven.
(Ao Bing: Nezha is so annoying....
Nezha:
Nezha: I heard you were talking sh!t about me
Ao Bing: WHAT THE FU- *proceeds to get spine ripped out)
(Also I have to tip-toe around the fact that they are based on the Lmk designs....)
I promise I am thinking about y'all and my lmk art and hopefully by the holidays I can finally post some finished WIPs
(click photo for less sh!tty quality)

So I've started reading the book (translation by Anthony C. Yu) and I'm only on the early chapters cuz life stuff holding my butt back but, like, I couldn't resist to scribble on the pages like the menace I am;
Tumblr media
I've only watched the 2009 series so being exposed to a lot of the other variations they have rn is very intriguing and fun. Alas, I still use lmk wukong's look since I'm more familiar to that. (But like the old comics of jttw and mkr do be looking good dayum)

JTTW-era Stone Egg part 2:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
referencing this previous post about the Pilgrims reacting to the knowledge that au!Wukong is having a baby and has a missing mate.
Ao Lie is a real bro; he figured out Wukong was a having a kid based on his dragon/horse nose, and decides to support him 100% no matter his choice at the end of the day. The fact that he suspects its an asexually-produced Stone Egg that could kill his new buddy is something Ao Lie is keeping quiet about until Wukong himself is comfortable sharing it.
Ao Lie, after Bajie accuses him of having a crush on Wukong: "Ew no! He most certainly has a mate awaiting his return - I wouldn't dare dishonor a married demon!" Wukong, brightly playing along: "Yeah, piglet! Plus, no one will ever measure up to my Mihou!" Ao Lie, confused whinny: "Excuse me, what?" Wukong, tail curling into a heart: "The strongest, most clever monkey on Flower Fruit Mountain - my equal in all including on the battlefield. <3"
The rest of the gang are pleasantly surprised... and outraged to learn that their pregnant companion has a mate that up and left him while he was pregnant. Whomever this "Macaque" figure is, the Pilgrims gonna have a stern talk with him when they find him.
Tumblr media
Except maybe the two former-celestials;
Bajie is just like: "Wait, did you just say this Macaque guy was your equal in battle!?" Wukong, wistful sigh: "Yeah..." Zhu Bajie & Sha Wujing: *share equally terrified looks*
Maybe they'll need to devise an attack strategy before confronting this guy head on. Ao Lie loudly states that he's gonna kick the guy if he sees him first.
Tripitaka meanwhile has to mentally wrap his head around the idea of two men marrying before he can process that *Sun Wukong* is married. The Confuscist / Buddhist attitudes at the time said "Girls have Karma Cooties"; so it was considered normal for men to "prefer other men's company" but it was still super-illegal. Being raised in a sheltered, likely all-male, monastery also adds in extra confusion for the monk. Not to mention his own asexuality.
Tripitaka: "Is it... acceptable for a man to love another man like one would a woman?" Zhu Bajie: "Only if they're into it." Tripitaka: "Wha...?"
Eventually he ends up asking the boddhisattvas and different gods for their opinions;
Tripitaka: "Is it normal amongst those in the Celestial Realm for men to... have thoughts of romance for other men?" Erlang: "Oh diyu, yeah! It's totally normal! We even have Tu'er Shen - he's the rabbit god of homosexual love!" Tripitaka, pleasantly surprised: "Oh! That's interesting - but is it accepted?" Erlang & the Plum Hill Lads: *share a footballer's huddle, whispering intensely* Erlang: "Ehhh... just don't bring it up around my uncle. He's kinda weird about it." Triptiaka, a little heartbroken: "Oh..."
Best advice comes from Guanyin herself ofc;
Guanyin: "I'm am composed of multiple energies, Tang Monk. Although I do not experience romantic feelings like say, Chang'e and Hou Yi, I know for a fact that the buddha does not judge those for whom they love - even if their fellow man do so." Tripitaka: *delighted smile!* Tripitaka, remembering why he asked: *fatherly instincts activate* "I'm going to kill that Liu'er Mihou for breaking my student's heart!"
In the Jttw Stone Egged au where Macaque lives, Tripitaka is the only one to get a solid punch in before Wukong calls the gang off.
Angst and canonical death tw under Read More;
Tumblr media
Zhu Bajie ultimately starts out as a huge a-hole, and the Journey makes him a little less of a jerk. One huge change Wukong noticed in his bro's behavior was around the time... he lost Macaque.
Especially in the Slow Boiled au.
Bajie would walk up to Wukong like he did many time when he tried stealing his snacks or to poke fun at him... only to sit down next to the monkey watches the moon together. Both longing.
Zhu Bajie: "You know... I wasn't lying when I said I was cursed to suffer many heartbreaks... I know what it looks like from a mile away." Wukong: *says nothing, hiding face in his arms and knees* Zhu Bajie: "You really loved that guy, huh?" Wukong: *nods, face still hidden* Zhu Bajie, confidently: "...you'll see him again. Maybe not in this lifetime, but you will." Wukong, uncharacteristically quiet: "Thanks..." Zhu Bajie: "No problem."
The pig is noticeably easier on Wukong after that day. And maybe a little more appriciative of the time he had with Culian... he's experienced enough bad love-lifes to figure out how to make things work. Maybe after the Journey is over, he'll give her a call?
He does really hope his Eldest Brother and his mate reunite in the future... even if it means in the Diyu.

Childhood au
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inspired by the Lilo and stitch meme and ittw @skittlescripts, @jscribbs guanyin and @rinitachan ittw!reader oc
I.... was an "interesting" child
My mad ramblings below 👇
I would think child au!Sun Wukong would have really need a friend since when we're children, we really need a connection with someone that isn't scared or disgusted by our eccentricities, someone willing to play despite what we "are".
I also can't help but think that child au!Sun Wukong is somehow a bigger menace, and so someone was like, "Just give em' a playmate" instead of really doing anything. 🤔🤨😮‍💨
Child me was.... odd, so I thought I would be funny to see this bad cutie and badder cutie dynamic 😈 🌸 🐒 ✨️

So chapter 6 was...A LOT. But as usual I have some sketches for it!
@journeythroughjourneytothewest
Starting with
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My designs for Guanyin, Muzha and Erlang! I plan to give Erlang a slightly different design for any future appearances, but i enjoy the idea of him being younger at this time. I really adore Guanyin so I was extra excited they were in this chapter and I got to make a design for them.
Tumblr media
The meeting of the two Sages. Erlang must definitely had been young due to Wukong's smack talk. I really enjoyed the fight and banter between the two. I can see why a lot of people say they'd be buddies were the circumstances different.
Tumblr media
Liu and Ma realizing that Wukong may have met his match with Erlang. Honestly the monkeys go through so much in this chapter. And I just made it worse for Liu elsewhere
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this chapter is most disconcerting when you realize that Wukong was GENUINELY afraid when realizing just how evenly matched he and Erlang were. And I can only imagine the emotions he had as he was dragged to heaven.
I want to read the next chapter before I draw my personal ideas for the siege on the mountain ordered by Erlang. It'd be where my Macaque Spirit King would get some very heavy trauma but also be the start of my version of Liu'er Mihou's descent into madness.
And as a bonus:
Tumblr media
Local god gets called a cheater by visiting angel. (More of a scene from a jttw x mythology story/au idea where multiple mythologies interact and a few different folks end up in China during the Havoc)
