Best of YouTube 2023

Yes, I did spend the first week and change of January on this. I wish I could have had it done for New Years, but too many people came out with incredible work in December, so waiting turned out for the best.

What these creators do are a huge influence on my life, I would honestly have difficulty doing what I do without them. That isn't to say that my favorites of the year are *only* on this image--It was almost impossible to narrow down my favorites. Many creators I wanted to include couldn't fit on a single page, and too many of them made more than one video I wished I could draw too!

But, to all of you, thank you for what you do. You're an inspiration.

For those who don't know, further is an explanation.

At the bottom center is an artistic masterpiece by Defunctland: "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History." Over the last several years, Defunctland has risen from delightfully-entertaining commentary on decommissioned theme park attractions to occasionally dropping profound statements on the creation of art itself. "Journey to EPCOT Center: A Symphonic History" is worth treating like the cinematic experience it is: No second screen, you sit your ass down in front of a TV, set down the phone, and then you *watch it.* Any Disney, theme park, or independent film fan needs to pay attention to this one.

Bottom left is Caelan Conrad with their piece "Drop the T - The Deadly Consequences of Gay Respectability Politics." While I do think they've done more visually or artistically-daring pieces before, "Drop the T" is one of the most important videos released on YouTube in today's current climate of hate. We as queer folk (and our allies) need to understand how integral every identity of the queer experience has been since the start of the Civil Rights movement (and before!). While we are not identical, we *are* inseparable, and we deserve having our real history easily accessible.

TERFs and other conservative mouthpieces need not reply. Your opinions are trash. 😘

I cannot stop watching and rewatching this video by @patricia-taxxon, "On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People." It's not just a defense of furry fandom and its eccentricities, it's a thoughtful and passionate analysis of what the artform achieves that purely human representation can't. Patricia goes outside of her usual essay format to directly speak to the viewer about the elements that define furry media (the most succinct definition I've ever heard) and just how *human* an act loving animal cartoons really is.

As an artist who can draw furry characters, but never really got into erotic furry art, this video is a treasure. Why did I choose to have her drawn as a Ghibli character, hanging out with one of the tanukis from "Pom Poko?" Guess you'll have to watch, bruh.

Philosophy Tube continuously puts out videos that I would put on this list--I'm not even sure that "A Man Plagiarised my Work: Women, Money, and the Nation" is the best work she released in 2023. However, this video got many conversations going between myself and my partner, and the twist on the tail end of the video shocked us both to such a degree that I had no choice.

At the very tail end of the year, Big Joel released "Fear of Death." On his Little Joel channel, he described it as the singularly best video he's ever done, and I'm inclined to agree. However, for this illustration, I ended up repeatedly going back to a mini-series he did earlier in the year: "Three Stories at the End of the World." All three videos are deeply moving and haunting, and I was brought to tears by "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot." While it may be relatively-common knowledge that the original Gojira (Godzilla) film is horror grappling with the devastation America's rush to atomic dominance inflicted on Japan, Big Joel still manages to bring new words to the discussion. Please watch all three of the videos, but if, for some reason, you must have only one, let it be "We Must Destroy What the Bomb Cannot."

Y'all. Let me confess something. I hate football. I hate watching it, I associate seeing it from the stadiums with some of my worst childhood experiences, I despise collegiate and professional football (as institutions that destroy bodies and offer up children at the feet of its alter as a pillar of American culture)--

I. L o a t h e. Football.

But.

F.D. Signifier could get me to watch an entire hour-plus essay on why I should at least give a passing care. AND HE DID IT. I might think "F*ck the Police," the two-parter on Black conservatism, or his essay on Black men's connection to anime might be "better" videos, but this writer did the impossible and held my limited attention span towards football long enough to make a sincere case for NFL players--and reminds us that millionaires can *in fact* be workers. That alone is testament to his skill.

Sit down and watch "The REAL Reason NFL Running Backs Aren't Getting Paid." Any good anti-capitalist owes it to themselves.

CJ the X continuously puts out stunning, emotional videos, and can do it with the most seemingly-inconsequential starting points. A 30 second song? An incestuous commercial? Five minutes of Tangled? Sure, why not. Go destroy yourself emotionally by watching them. I'm serious. Do it.

Their video Stranger Things and the Meaning of Life manages to to remind us all why the way we react to media does, in fact, matter. Yes, even nostalgia-driven, mass-media schlock. Yes, how we interact with media matters, what it says about us matters, and we all deserve to seek out the whys.

Folding Ideas has spent the last few years articulating exactly why so much of our modern world feels broken, and because of that his voice continuously lives rent-free in my brain. While the tricks that scam artists and grifters use to try to swindle us are never new, the advancement of technology changes the aesthetics of their performances. Portions of Folding Ideas' explanations might seem dry when going into detail of how stocks work in This is Financial Advice, but every bit of it is necessary to peel back the layers of techno-babble and jargon and make sense of the results of "Meme Stocks."

Jessie Gender puts out nothing but bangers, her absolute unit of a video about Star Wars might be my new favorite thing ever, but none of her work hit so profoundly in 2023 than the two-parter "The Myth of 'Male Socialization'" and "The Trauma of Masculinity." There's so much about modern life that isolates and traumatizes us, and so much of it is just shrugged off as "normal." We owe it to ourselves to see the world in more vivid a color palette than we're initially given.

"This is Not a Video Essay" is one of the most intense and beautiful pieces of art I've ever put into my eyeballs. Why do we create? What drives us to connect?

I don't even know what else to say about the Leftist Cooks' work, it repeatedly transcends the medium and platform. Watch every single one of their videos, but especially this one.

The likelihood you are terminally online and yet haven't heard of Hbomberguy's yearly forrays into destroying the careers of awful people is pretty slim. Just because it has millions of views doesn't mean that Hbomberguy's "Plagiarism and You(Tube)" isn't worth the hype. Too long? Shut up, it has chapters and YouTube holds your place, anyway. You think a deep dive into a handful of creators is only meaningless drama? Well, you're wrong, you wrong-opinion-haver. Plagiarism is an *everyone* problem because of the actual harm it creates--the history it erases, the labor it devalues, the art it marginalizes--which you would know if you watched "Plagiarism and You(Tube)".

It's a Small World: (Any version/park!): Disneyland, WDW Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland,Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland)

Propaganda:

"it's a small world" is one of the oldest rides still standing today, and I think it's for good reason. It might not be as thrilling as expedition everest or as flashy as the haunted mansion, but it has a distinct charm that has people coming back year after year. The design of the ride itself - inspired by Mary Blair - is whimsical without being garish; the gold and white of Disneyland Anaheim is reminiscent of their early classic films, while the colorful geometric shapes in Tokyo Disneyland are fun and funky. It's one of the few rides with installations in every park. The propulsion system created for it would go on to be used in later rides like pirates of the caribbean, so if you're a fan of the latter, you have the former to thank for that. You either love or hate the infamous song, but there's no denying that it's catchy. What's more, I think what really keeps people coming back is it's message. "it's a small world'' emphasizes unity, but it also celebrates the diversity and uniqueness of cultures around the world. It's not "you and I are both the same", it's "you and I might be different, but at the end of the day we both laugh and cry and have hopes and fears and many more similarities than what our geography and government tries to say". Sure, it might be corny, but it's not like anyone goes to Disney to get away from this type of cheesy shmaltziness."

"Taken from Escape From Vault Disney podcast, but, three women and a stoner were the main artists and I think that's important. Adding to that, the song is good and no I don't care if it's annoying. Listen to the original version, it's freaking beautiful. Mary Blair art is cute and charming and the whole attraction just looks like kids coloring and drawing and singing and being friends!!! The adult chorus in the finale room is like the parents joining in and spending time with their children and encouraging their kids to respect each other and don't judge people. But also it's like those kids are adults now and refuse to let negativity win and they see the beauty and kindness in people and dang it, that's what being human is about!!!! Be kind to others and accept and help people because we got one earth people!!! And it has just one moon and one golden sun!!! Also the clock has a name. His name is Glockenspiel and he's just a happy guy I love him. Also inspired the boss in Epic Mickey and that boss theme is so good omg"

Disney’s Figment in the Bingham house: A Symbol of Breaking Convention

Ep6 of S4, titled “The Dive,” contains the Bingham house segments. We are well aware of how symbolism, foreshadowing, parallels and more for the show and it’s characters fills this house to the brim. Metaphorically, there is so much to dive into—to uncover—regarding this house. This includes a Disney World Figment the dragon plush doll sitting below Suzie’s window.

Figment is Epcot’s (one of the four Disney World Orlando parks) mascot. Figment himself is meant to be the literal embodiment of the phrase “figment of the imagination,” which matches Epcot’s brand of innovation. Basically, don’t let a figment (an idea or thought) of the mind stay in the mind; bring it into reality. I was working in Epcot when Stranger Things 4 aired, funnily enough in what’s called the Land Pavilion, which is directly beside an attraction called Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

In Journey Into Imagination, you sit on a slow-moving compartment that takes you through the “Imagination Institute” on an open house tour led by a character called Dr. Nigel Channing. He’s the chairman of this institute that researches and develops technological innovation in ways to harness the power of creativity. This research is what led to the discovery of Figment (in lore, not the ride).

Now, as I mentioned above, Figment does not simply represent imagination; he is imagination literally, completely unrestrained and unwilling to yield in his sense of creativity despite being told to stop causing [harmless] chaos by Nigel.

While Nigel is enthusiastic in sharing the institute’s discoveries with the public (you, on this tour, and his goal is to stimulate your creativity through the five senses in order for you to harness your creativity), he is constantly voicing his wariness and disapproval of Figment’s mischievous but still harmless insistence to share his perspective throughout the tour (Figment expresses his tests/experiments/thoughts through song; I will explain momentarily because this is important). However, as you approach the ride’s end, Nigel has a change of mind. Nigel at first states “imagination must be captured and controlled.” Figment promptly replies, “Nuh-uh! Imagination works best when it’s set free!”

Soon enough, Figment figuratively and literally turns everything upside down. Because, as Nigel learns, “Imagination is the act of turning your thinking upside down!”

I mentioned Figment expresses his creativity through song, along with key pieces of dialogue that challenge your basic understanding of the senses (sight and hearing especially stand out). Rather than post the entire song and it’s dialogue, these are moments of intrigue I strung together:

FIGMENT: It’s not about listening with your ears—it’s about listening with your imagination.

For every sound your ears are hearing,
A thousand thoughts can start appearing.
And each of us imagines different things,
From just a sound, your mind has wings!

DR. NIGEL CHANNING: Continuing now, if I may, in a calm, scientific, Figment-free manner—the things we see with our eyes can control the eyes of the imagination. Let’s begin by using the eye chart to test your vision.

FIGMENT: With F-I-G-M-E-N-T,
You can see things differently!

Sure, you can see with your eyes. But imagine what you could see if you used your imagination!

One spark of light can light your fancy.
Your mind sees more than what your eyes see.
Your sense of sight can make your fancy fly.
There’s more to sight than meets the eye!

DR. NIGEL CHANNING: Figment, what is going on? You’re turning this entire open house upside down!

FIGMENT: Upside down? Now you’re talkin’!

With just a spark of inspiration,

I’ve made my house an innovation.

Imagination really clowns around:

Makes downside up, and upside down!

FIGMENT: A dream can be a dream come true. With just that spark from me and you.

DR. NIGEL CHANNING:

One little spark of inspiration

Is at the heart of all creation.

Right at the start of everything that’s new,

One little spark lights up for you.

There’s a lot to unpack here, but the first thing to take from all this is the importance of freeing your mind. Not just freeing your mind, but placing no restrictions upon yourself! Hear and see and be beyond the surface to open your perspective! All it takes is a spark of something new—something that could bring new light to you. To more than just yourself as well. Figment isn’t just imagination incarnate; he is non-conforming freedom.

In bringing this around to ST, this requires a dive through some ideas Figment could be associated with. There’s more than one meaning or foreshadowing we can grab from Figment in-frame.

The first association that comes to mind is Will and Mike. Will and Mike getting together and the GA reacting. Byler is in motion right now and there’s a desire from certain parts of the GA to control it—to stop this ‘harmful chaos,’ so to say. They want restriction on this ‘way of thinking,’ refusing to open up their minds to more and understanding how harmless it is for same-sex couples to exist. To people like this, who think so shortly, they believe queerness should be a figment of the imagination that never exists. But queerness does exist, queer people do exist, and it’s the opposing parts of the GA who haven’t freed their minds from restriction not acknowledging that truth. One spark of something new—a new ‘spark’/perspective to turn your thoughts upside down—is what can lead someone to understanding others’ differences. I don’t have to go into detail as to why “forced conformity is killing the kids” is such a vastly important line in Stranger Things.

But who else controls and restricts? Henry. He wants the world adapted to his mindset, his ideal, and he’s incapable of viewing any other perspective other than his own at this point. He tried to manipulate El into joining him and attempted to kill her when she wouldn’t. He bent what we know as the Mind Flayer to his whims, controlling it and using it to further control others. Now, we can gather that Henry wants Will to meet that standard of control in whatever way Henry intends to use him for. To possibly control Will’s powers.

If we take Dr. Nigel’s lyric “One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation” and apply it to Will, this may align with the theory that Will created the current version of the Upside Down on the night he was kidnapped. Unintentionally perhaps, unknowing of what was happening to him in the moment and horribly shaken, something ‘sparked’ in Will’s mind that allowed him to reshape the UD to what we’re familiar with—maybe to what Will was familiar with.

From the tons of analysis we’ve undergone since S4 aired, we can infer Henry was stalking Will before he took him. Henry sees himself in Will and preys on him to accomplish what he couldn’t with El, and from that it isn’t hard to consider Will has powers Henry wants to manipulate. I currently have thoughts that Will could be multi-powered (like a wizard), and creation abilities would tie well into this idea. It could explain the frozen-in-time Hawkins appearance. Creation and imagination are tied to artistry, and that would be an on-the-nose alignment for Will. Will takes a blank canvas and paints—creates what his mind sees. Henry took the canvas of the unspoiled UD and started creating what he wants it to be. And if Will had an effect on Henry’s creation, if Will could have a greater effect on what Henry further intends to create, Henry would aim to harness all Will can do and make the upside down his downside up.

HOWEVER. The controlling way Henry thinks will be undone by our characters needing to think outside-of-the-box, breaking out of Henry’s mould and standard. And I analyze this by linking the shot of Figment in Suzie’s room—

—to Mike’s Rubik’s cube and bedsheets in S1 + Mike’s blanket fort in S2.

How? Color theory, web/gridgate, my rubikscubegate, and the mere presence of Figment. Figment is non-conforming freedom, an unrelenting force who strives to make anything possible. This includes breaking the standard of Dr. Nigel, who formerly believed imagination/thoughts should be controlled. My Rubik’s cube theory, which I recommend checking out here if you haven’t and are interested in greater details on it, discusses how Mike’s Rubik’s cube is a grid in and of itself. The colors we see directly on it are yellow, blue, and orange. I thought it was red at first, but it’s definitely orange. We know to associate Will with yellow and Mike with blue, but we’re missing our other primary color red: El. We see groupings of these three colors quite a lot, and yet red is missing here.

Or is it? Just as we know who to associate with yellow and blue, we know Mike and Will together are green. To make orange, you need red and yellow. El is included on the cube but combined with Will. We even see a square on Mike’s fort that is half yellow and orange (along with half blue&green and half blue&yellow squares; all three of these squares are near Mike’s head—his brain). And because this Rubik’s cube is solved and we can assume Mike did it, my theory is that Mike will be the one to figure out how they will defeat Henry. And for Mike’s strategy to work, Will and El need to team up specifically, as well as Will and Mike. The Rubik’s cube’s color scheme directly correlates to the grids and color schemes on Mike’s bedsheets and fort: Yellow, Blue, Y + B = Green, Red, and R + Y = Orange. You can get all these colors on their own or through combination on the cube and sheets.

What makes this theory stronger is this series of words and character placement before and after seeing the above shot with Figment:

‘Make sure to give that selfish shit a nice little shove for me.’

*Cue Mike at the front, looking at—through—the window first, piecing together the answer.

‘Give [him] a shove.’

We know Mike has been targeted by Henry, and Mike is going to suffer because of Henry. But Henry is also going to suffer because of Mike. Mike will figure him out and create a plan—through a spark of inspiration, if you will—that breaks Henry’s web of entrapments with a strategy that requires El, Will, and himself to work. And, ultimately, the final keys to Henry’s defeat are Will and Mike themselves.

Henry’s way of thinking is going to get turned upside down and obliterated, by individuals who aim beyond controlled conformity and fight to set themselves free.

For Will and Mike, they will realize their own ‘spark’ (hello “Are Friends Electric?”) is what will set them free from withholding themselves.

And it’s something the GA will hopefully come to understand: Why this sense of freedom from society-placed restriction is so important for Will and Mike and the people they represent. In turning their thinking upside down and seeing—really seeing—the other side, more conventional standards may break.

he is the little imaginary dragon from the ride "Journey Into Imagination." the ride itself has has three different incarnations, but it's generally agreed upon that the first one (which i sadly never got to ride) is the best (which, honestly i agree 100%):

It's time for the 5th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at trash cans at the Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide. Yes, it's a weird idea, but you are going to keep reading, right? (View previous Year-in-Reviews) Some may note that it's been a somewhat rocky year for the Mouse, but trash can activity has been strong. As we've seen in previous years, this year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disneyland, the opening of the World of Frozen in Hong Kong, and the arrival of the Zootopia in Shanghai. Unfortunately, we also saw the fastest introduction-to-removal can timeline with the closing of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - which had opened just a year earlier at Walt Disney World. Over the past year, MagicalTrash.com celebrated the 1,000 trash can photo milestone (only took 14 years!), while adding over 100 new entries. This was complimented by 1,600+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky. Posts were also added to Twitter/X, but frankly it's hard to continue supporting that platform due to its overall decline on many fronts (and I say that as someone who works in corporate social media professionally!). For 2023, Magical Trash tracked 16 substantial trash can design changes, a 14% increase vs. 2022's 14 tracked changes:

The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Disneyland Resort experiencing 6 changes, while Walt Disney World recorded 4 changes. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort both recorded 2 updates, and Shanghai Disney Resort saw 1 new addition. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort or Disney Cruise Line.

Here's a detailed breakdown of updates:

ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (El CapiTOON Theater) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown With a movie theater setting, iconography is anchored by a popcorn bucket image with large “EC” letters.  

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (M.A.G.I.C.) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown Outside the attraction are cans associated with M.A.G.I.C. - short for the Municipal Agency of Garbage Identification and Collection. Now that's a group we want to join!  

World of Frozen (Arendelle Crest) - NEW - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen The official crest of Arendelle features a crocus - a multi-color flowering bulb that typically blooms in the spring - and seen throughout the Frozen franchise.  

World of Frozen (Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs) - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen Furthering the rugged forest theme of the family coaster, decorative Scandinavian folk art patterns are found throughout queue, with geometric shapes highlighted in red, green, and orange hues.  

Zootopia - NEW Shanghai Disneyland, Zootopia A surprising entry to Shanghai's bland trash can scene, green trash cans with zebra-like stripes on the lower portion combine with a city emblem.  

San Fransokyo Square - NEW Disney California Adventure, San Fransokyo Square The shoehorned Big Hero 6 retheme of DCA's Pacific Wharf gave us new cans that looked a lot like the old cans - but with bonus "SFS" branding. Ho hum.  

Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Nature You can tell this is a modern Disney attraction because the name is an IP-laden paragraph. Lots of storytelling to explain "scenery."  

Parkside Market - NEW Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney Probably one of the more visually-stunning additions in 2023, Mickey Mouse + mid-century design. Simple concept, well-executed.  

The Villas at Disneyland Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel New DVC borrows much of its design from Aulani. Not ugly, but also not magical. Were these picked out of a catalog?  

Pixar Place Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, Pixar Place Hotel The retime of Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel features trash cans very similar in design to those implemented at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Maybe they got a 2-for-1 deal?  

Disneyland Paris Reusable Tableware Cans - NEW Disneyland Paris, Adventureland France's Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law is focused on phasing out improper disposal of waste. Food service at the French parks has implemented reusable table settings, which has impacted trash can design.  

"Fantasyland 2" Backstage - NEW Disneyland Paris, Fantasyland A backstage can makes an appearance onstage as a support trash can from the “Fantasyland 2” zone, parked where everyone can see.  

Pym Test Kitchen Food Waste - NEW Disney California Adventure, Avengers Campus After debuting combination food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland around 2021, Disneyland expanded the practice to the Avengers Campus at DCA.  

Jollywood Nights Temporary Media Can - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios, Grand Avenue Throw a sticker on an existing trash can and it's something new! Temporarily rethemed can at Disney's Hollywood Studios during a media event for Jollywood Nights holiday entertainment.  

HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use

MK Main Street (1974) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Magic Kingdom, Main Street U.S.A. Early years of the Magic Kingdom featured very detailed trash cans on Main Street U.S.A, often in multiple colors. Quite a contrast from the undecorated brown cans used in the 2000s.  

Farmer's Market (Late-1980s/Early-1990s) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Epcot, Future World, The Land The famed umbrella tables at The Land found their shapes emulated via the trash cans, which were primarily brown with light tan arches represented on all sides.  

River Country (2010) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground 9 years after the water park closed, remnants of the ‘Ol’ Swimmin’ Hole’ could still be spotted at Fort Wilderness.  

Mulholland Madness (2007) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disney's California Adventure, Paradise Pier Tacky theme was on-point for DCA 1.0. This green can with road sign decal found a home in Paradise Pier.

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The in-wall trash cans for the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser were in use for just 579 days.  

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser You won't be needing to dispose of your garbage before boarding the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, as these cans will probably have a longer life than the hotel ever had.  

One massive disappointment in 2023 was Walt Disney World's opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Generic silver cans, thus reinforcing WDW's continual cheapening out on themed trash can design. Paul Pressler called and even he thinks you can do better.

Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 14-year anniversary covering the world of Disney trash cans, which included keeping up with various salt shaker merchandise releases that showcase the iconic can shape. 6 new designs were released during festivals: The Dude with the Food (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Amazingly Sweet (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Groovy Garden Orange Bird (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Stuck on Imagination Figment (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Chef Mickey (Epcot Food & Wine 2023), and Spaceship Earth (Epcot Food & Wine 2023).

If you happened to be at Tokyo Disneyland, you could have picked up a mini figure version of a Tomorrowland trash can or a TDS trash can toy. In the U.S. you could pick up a shirt or water bottle with a recycling can image proclaiming that you "Love Our Disney Parks" -- Disneyland or WDW-specific versions. There was plenty of trash can auction action as well.

Disney Dreamland - Part 2: Adventureland

Due to my quirk of wanting each land’s name to reflect a broad genre, Frontierland was basically merged into Adventureland (I know westerns are their own genre, but I felt it too niche compared to the other genres I picked). I tried my best not to be stereotypical in regards to certain areas. Cultural experts would be consulted (both native to their country and diaspora). 

Also, I should mention, I friggin' love carousels. I put at least one in each genre land. I'm just that nuts about them.

Imperial Courtyard

This area would be similar to the China Pavilion in EPCOT, but more focused on fiction and mythology. Includes a lovely lotus pond garden to sit and relax in. Would have Lunar New Year celebrations in the winter. Disclaimer: I may be a child of Hong Kong immigrants but I grew up a full westerner New Yorker. Please consult cultural experts.   At the moment, my mind’s eye is picturing this area neatly tucked away in a corner between World Galleria and the rest of Adventureland.

Sun Wukong the Monkey King / Journey to the West: Dark ride. I only recently learned that despite Sun Wukong being a popular character, he is not in fact the protagonist of Journey to the West. I think centering it on either Sun Wukong’s life and backstory, or the actual journey to the West with the other characters could work. The art style would resemble Chinese calligraphy paintings come to life. I would also love an original song that ties the entire ride together, in the same manner as “Compass of Your Heart” from Sindbad's Storybook Voyage in Tokyo DisneySea.

Mulan stage show: Would contain well-choreographed martial arts stunts, alongside musical performances, with “Make A Man Out of You” being the big showstopper combining both. For the design aesthetic, I’m thinking of something similar to Mulan’s float unit in Shanghai’s parade.

Zodiac Carousel: Under a lovely red and gold Chinese pavilion roof. Features twelve rows of animals of the Chinese Zodiac. Could be located inside the garden.

Jade Phoenix Tea House: Chinese tea, pastries, and dim sum.

Golden Dragon Restaurant: Table service.

Equatorial Tropics

Blends from Polynesia to Africa. 

The Enchanted Tiki Room : The only thing I’d change is have a new cast of host birds, to make it unique. Maybe there could also be a temporary Lilo and Stitch / Moana overlay during the summer months. 

Polynesian Terrace restaurant: Table service.

Jungle River Cruise: Obviously would not include condescending stereotypes of natives. Otherwise, I would like it to be distinctly unique from other versions of the ride with a new storyline and skipper commentary.

“Treetop Village” : My park’s equivalent of the Swiss Family Treehouse. I wanted to have a suspension bridge entrance like Anaheim’s version used to have (as Tarzan’s Treehouse), which I thought looked so cool, and then I thought about putting my treehouse on an island in the Jungle River Cruise, like Hong Kong’s, with the bridge crossing over the river from the walkway entrance. Then I thought, why not make it a whole village of treehouses on the island, all connected by suspension bridges? It would be limited to a handful of trees so as not to disrupt the Jungle Cruise ride too much, but would still have plenty of scenic views for guests to see. There could be a few interactive elements for guests to play with, such as rope and pulley systems, to simulate the illusion of functioning living quarters. Maybe even include a couple of swings.

Tales of Anansi: Dark ride. A stylized retelling of the Anansi stories with a unique art style, in the same manner as how Lion King was adapted for stage. This is partially to look cool and unique, and partially to avoid Anansi looking too creepy for anyone afraid of spiders. Please consult cultural experts.

Circle of Life buffet: Cuisine from Kenya and Tanzania, the countries of inspiration for The Lion King. But just for fun, one of the desserts could be Timon and Pumbaa’s Chocolate “Mud” and Gummy Bugs.

Pirate Cove

Visually based off the Adventure Isle area in Paris’s Adventureland. Includes a walkthrough ship, a restaurant ship, a small island (Skull Island), and a picturesque waterfall. This area would probably be outside the railroad perimeter, accessible through a mountain tunnel.

“Pirates Ride” : I think Pirates of the Caribbean is a very neat ride. I have a lot of mixed feelings regarding *ahem* certain scenes, but that’s a lot to unpack for another time. I do not want this version of Pirates to have anything to do with the movies, which while entertaining, I feel have overstayed their welcome (but I will admit the scenery in Shanghai’s version of the ride is breathtaking, both real and digital, and the battle climax is definitely exciting). Rather than copying the classic ride, I would love it if Imagineers would come up with a brand new story with a brand new set of pirates in another part of the world. That said, I have no issue with Jack Sparrow being a walk around character in the area.

“Pirate Explore Zone”: Inspired by the various walkthrough ships in Disney Parks. Could also extend to Skull Island, which includes caves you can wander around, inspired by Le Ventre de la Terre underneath Paris’s version of the Swiss Family Treehouse.

“Pirate Stunt Show”: An action stunt show on the water utilizing floats.

“Pirate Ship restaurant”: Quick service.

X Marks the Shop: Pirated themed merchandise.

Wild Western Frontier

The start of “Frontierland”. Part typical Wild West town, part Native community featuring adobe pueblos, part Grand Canyon-style rock formations. Please consult cultural experts.

Western River Expedition: Based on the never-built attraction by Marc Davis. Would be tweaked to avoid any stereotypical portrayals of Native peoples. Please consult cultural experts. The river flume would be crafted to intertwine with Big Thunder’s railroad. Also includes a snapshot photo-op at the final drop, like Splash Mountain. 

Big Thunder Mountain: Mostly the same, but I would rearrange to have the train pass through the underground Rainbow Caverns at the end before the unloading dock. Story could go that in trying to find the last motherlode of gold, you accidentally trigger explosions that nearly trap you, but end up unearthing the caverns; pretty much like the Mickey Mouse short Nature's Wonderland that homages this ride and its predecessor. Lesson being that in life, you may not always find what you want, but sometimes you find something else just as valuable. 

Cowboy Carousel: Would appear to be built out of wood. Could resemble a farm enclosure. Horses in cowboy hats and bandanas. This is not really a necessary addition to the area, but as I mentioned, I LOVE carousels and could not resist putting it on this list.

Golden Horseshoe Revue restaurant: American cuisine and BBQ and saloon stage show. Table service. (I have yet to experience this in the existing parks, but I’d like to some day.)

General Store: Cowboy-themed merchandise.

“Native Legends of the West” / “Legends of Coyote”: Dark ride designed in a Native art style. Please consult cultural experts. Could retell various legends of the region, but for a more unified story it could focus on the trickster character of Coyote. 

Native-owned shops: Authentic Native American artisan crafts. Shout-out to @disneylanddilettante for the idea. Could feature live demonstrations and workshops for kids, along with guides to explain the cultural significance. 

Land of the Dead restaurant: Mexican cuisine. I wanted a place that could be themed as a nod to Coco, my favorite Pixar movie, without being heavily IP themed. Actual Día de Muertos celebrations would only happen in the fall; this restaurant would basically allude to the daily lives of the inhabitants of The Land of the Dead the rest of the year outside of Día de Muertos. Please consult cultural experts. Would include a live mariachi band.

Rivers of America

Embodies the calmer aspects of Frontierland, however I still think they fit neatly into Adventureland if you think of life itself as an adventure, with this area being the "take it easy" part. The northern coast of the river would be on the edge of Mysteryland, part of that land’s city themed area, but with the buildings facing the river themed to New Orleans.

Fort Wilderness Island: Themed to a summer camp.

Fort Wilderness River Rafts: Transport to and from the island.

Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes

“Tall Tales Campfire”: Stage show retelling of classic American tall tales. Does not have to be a literal campfire, as that would limit the shows to nighttime only, not to mention be a hazard. 

Camp Woodchuck Kitchen: Based on the restaurant of the same name from Tokyo. Quick service. Waffle sandwiches and s’mores brownies. The original three flavors of waffles sandwiches were Fried Chicken and Maple Sauce (Huey), Bacon and Vegetables and BBQ Sauce (Dewey), and Shrimp and Avocado (Louie).

Johnny Appleseed stand: Apple tarts, apple fritters, apple fries, caramel apples, and apple cider.

On the coast of the river:

Mark Twain Riverboat

“Musical Americana Animals”: Animatronic stage show inspired by The Country Bear Jamboree and America Sings.

Tiana’s Palace: New Orleans cuisine. Tiana’s signature beignets and swamp gumbo are a must. Jazz band playing live music, with appearances by Louis the alligator and performances by Tiana and Naveen. There could even be a short Mardi Gras show every hour.

9) Baticano (2023, Stillz)

Imagine my surprise when I turn my TV and one of the best modern homages to German Expressionism and 30's-50's Western studio horror, starring Bad Bunny as Nosferatu and Steve Buscemi as a "mad scientist." The depths of the black parts of the screen alone... pure! black! contrast! Not the telltale flat digital black-gray!

Benito may be no Max Schreck, but Stillz was on a roll for the rapper's videos last year, and now I feel less... embarrassed? that I was repeatedly hypnotized by the hyper-Coachella vibes of the "Where She Goes" video... Stillz has skills.

Or at least knows how to shoot what I like.

Runners-up are many, but I want to highlight:

a) a small but solid run of horror viewing in October, from the adrenaline of As Above So Below to all the subtext James Whale snuck into The Old Dark House. Doctor Jekyll and Sister Hyde should be counted as one of the best Hammer horrors imo. On the borders of the horror were Mother Joan of the Angels, La Llorona, and the more witchy fantasy The Five Devils.

b) sidestep into Indonesia with May the Devil Take You, which may not be at the tip top levels of Impetigore but still a uniquely wild ride. Headshot sets standards on the action side, and you can definitely spot Gareth Evans' Indonesian industry training in his English folk-action-horror foray Apostle.

Greetings, welcome to my blog!

You can call me Autumn or Fritz! I am a park-goer and digital artist who uses any pronouns (seriously, go wild with it) and I’ve been lurking around the Alton Towers fandom since 2014, but I’ve been an active part here since 2021!

The part of the park I am most passionate about is everyone’s favourite time traveler (and my wife /j): Sir Algenon! A LOT of my art surrounds him and headcanons I have for him, and I also have an archive that I am working on to preserve parts of his lore and stage shows that may not be preserved otherwise.

That being said, do absolutely feel free to send in any asks about Sir Algenon or my original characters, and I will do my best to answer!

Other than that, I am a (self proclaimed) Adventurer, inspired by and interested in the Adventure crystal, one of the five crystals representing the Powers of Alton Towers.

My other interests include:

- One of Merlin Entertainments’ other major parks, Thorpe Park! I am a Towers guy at heart (no pun intended), but my favourite coaster at Thorpe is Stealth and my favourite ride is Ghost Train!

- Disney Kingdoms: Figment (I also really like EPCOT and Journey Into Imagination but the versions of the characters in DK: Figment are my main interest)

Long time, no update!

I feel like Covid really knocked me out of the Disney World fandom and, tbf, a level of cynicism with the Chapek rule and a few Disney Ytbers. I bet my blog isn’t super viewed anymore, but for some folks around that remember me:

- I moved to Los Angeles! (I’m sorry guys, I’m a Disneylander now.)

-I work in TV animation and themed entertainment! I have a few credits in shows and exhibits like Marvel, Studio Smokecreen’s Talon, OmegaMart, The Holocaust Museum, and PBS!

-I volunteered for Defunctland’s VR experience. Mostly America Sings and Alien Encounter. No longer affiliated!

-I mentored under two amazing artists! One was a major location designer for Disney Animation and was the Animation Director for World of Motion and Journey into Imagination! (He now works at Disney Jr.) the other is a major Concept artist for Marvel and Live Action Disney.

-I started animating again for the first time in 8 years and I love it! I’ve missed it so much. Both fan animations and personal project OCs.

-I flew and failed a short series pitch! (It was my first and only try, but I will keep trying! )

I still love EPCOT/vintage Disney Parks and I really missed it here. I may need a bit of time to remember this place, but here’s hoping things do turnaround at the parks. Disneyland has spoiled me a bit too, haha!

Hey Anon! Thanks for the really interesting ask!

I guess the best way to answer is to go through park by park. I’ll definitely be letting my personal biases show a bit on this, but I’ll also try to back up my answers as best I can.

Disneyland (CA): For me personally, this one is going to be summer of 1995. Indiana Jones Adventure has just opened, Fantasmic is just a few years old, classics like the Peoplemover and Country Bears are still around, crowds are relatively small compared to today, and no fastpass shenanigans to worry about. If I had a time machine I’d visit around then. 50th and 60th anniversaries were also really good times, as there were great extras being provided and no Genie+ or COVID protocols to worry about.

California Adventure: This one is easily the 2010s post Buena Vista Street/Cars Land refurb. I think this is when the theme of the park was at its most cohesive and the atmosphere finally clicked. This is also the version of the park I’m most familiar with.

Magic Kingdom: Early 90s, as you’d still have a lot of the classics like Mr. Toad, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, and Twenty Thousand Leagues that have since been torn down. The rest of the park really hasn’t changed that much, but I guess you could push it to late 90s if you wanted to include Alien Encounter in the golden age. This was pre-fastpass, and you also had some really crazy parades that just don’t happen like they do now.

Epcot: The classic Epcot line up really peaked late 80s/early 90s, when you still had all the classic dark rides (including Horizons and OG Journey Into Imagination) and strong entertainment offerings. There’s been significant investment in the park lately, which is appreciated, but while the new stuff may be more exciting than some of the older attractions, it just doesn’t give off that irreplaceable Epcot vibe.

Hollywood Studios: I think late 90s/early 2000s we’re the best era of this park, as you still had Great Movie Ride, the tram tour, and the animation tour where you could actually see different movies being worked on. I think the park was at its most cohesive then, at least thematically (and was really fun!), and you also still had the Osbourne Family Spectacle of Lights. Entertainment offerings were also in full swing and weren’t quite as dated as they are now. All of the attractions added in recent years have been strong, but the park feels a bit off now (thematically and otherwise), which isn’t helped by the large dead patches of unused space.

Animal Kingdom: Post-Pandora, pre-COVID, this park was absolutely fantastic, and is still really strong now. The later hours and the evening activities added a lot to the park, and the lack of Genie+ is never a bad thing.

I’m gonna go ahead and round this out with the overseas parks as well:

Disneyland Paris: The park remains largely similar to when it opened, but I would have to say the golden age would be any time pre-Hyperspace Mountain, as Paris’ Space Mountain was incredibly unique and had great theming that the Star Wars overlay renders superfluous. You’d also have to go back to pre-paid fastpass era to truly reach this park’s golden age.

Walt Disney Studios Paris: Honestly this park has never really reached its potential, but I guess I would say post-Ratatouille to now? It has more to do than it has before but it still doesn’t seem particularly cohesive. Bonus points for the recent Tower of Terror additions, though. Those seem cool.

Tokyo Disneyland: Pre-COVID, I would say this park was as good as its ever been. The always impeccable upkeep done in Tokyo means any time would be a great time, though I’ll give a special mention to the early 2000s just because it had Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour.

Tokyo Disney Sea: Same as Tokyo Disneyland, most of the park’s existence has been a golden age. Anything from the addition of Tower of Terror up til the addition of Finding Nemo is essentially perfect, and even then that’s just a personal preference. I think with the coming addition of Fantasy Springs it’ll keep going strong - I just hope free fastpass returns eventually.

Hong Kong Disneyland: Mid-2010s, post-Mystic Manor, but pre-new castle and Ant-Man attraction, which was a serious downgrade to the existing Buzz ride. To get really specific, I’d say any Halloween season as they had great overlays and unique haunted mazes that have since changed.

Shanghai Disneyland: First 2-3 years from opening. During that time all of the theming was flawless and there were minimal IP-takeovers of non-IP related lands (Adventure Isle, etc). All ride effects were top notch and there was a great amount of streetmosphere and entertainment. I’m not exactly sure what it’s like now, but it sounds like COVID has been rough on the park. It will be interesting to see what it’s like post-Zootopia though.

Question time! What's your favorite Disney land that's no longer around? Mine's the original "Tomorrowland" (hopefully the right name) themed after space / the future and with all the corporate sponsors lol

Oh, what an interesting question!

The original Tomorrowland was such a wild place! It’s honestly one of my favorite modern lands, but I would’ve loved to ride some of those original rides like Journey into Inner Space. I’m glad they never changed that retro-future theming, though.

There have been a surprising amount of lands that have closed over the years. It’s a good time to quickly go over the difference between a park and a land, for those who don’t know (because I didn’t for a while).

A park is what it sounds like: a whole theme park. You need a ticket to get into it, and you can only go to one a day (unless you have park hopper tickets). Disneyland has only two, but Disney World has four — Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, and Epcot.

A land, however, is a section of those parks which has specific theming. I won’t go over all of them, there’s a lot, but some good examples are Tomorrowland like you mentioned and Fantasyland in Magic Kingdom, as well as Star Wars Land (aka Galaxy’s Edge but everyone calls it Star Wars Land LOL) and Toy Story Land in Hollywood Studios. As long as you’re in the particular park the land is in, there’s no ticket and you can freely come and go.

As for closed lands, I absolutely have to say the original Future World in Epcot.

Honestly, I would say all of Epcot as it originally stood, but Future World especially, because it contained a fan favorite Disney attraction that has been closed for years: Journey Into Imagination, the origin of Figment the purple dragon! It also contained several other defunct attractions - in fact, I don’t think any of them still stand today.

The reason Future World and Epcot in general has been so remodeled is an interesting one, and actually relates back to the reason Tomorrowland was remodeled so heavily; it’s basically an impossible to theme a theme park to the real possible future.

Well, you can, but it’s not going to last very long. Epcot was originally sort of a permanent world’s fair, with its attractions designed to be educational and innovative. Future World especially, obviously, got the brunt of this, with all kinds of showcases of scientific discoveries.

But you may have noticed a problem with this idea. While it’s an incredibly cool idea, especially nowadays science moves quickly. In just a few years, Future World and pretty much all of Epcot looked outdated already. The technology it showcased was no longer innovative. It was all yesterday’s news.

In order to keep a land like that accurate and up to date, it would need overhauls basically every single year, and that’s just not feasible (especially for a park that never closes for an off season).

So, Future World and pretty much all of the other lands and attractions of Epcot have been gutted. A lot of it stands fully abandoned, like the Horizons plaza which is only used intermittently as a festival space. It gives the entire park a strange vibe.

However, I’ve got to say I kind of love modern Epcot, too, even though it’s since replaced all its lands and has a lot of renovations planned. It was one of my favorite parks to just be in when we went, with the retro future theming of Tomorrowland taken to a bigger extreme. I’d still absolutely adore to see it at its peak of operation, especially when Journey Into Imagination was still operating.

Disney’s Figment in the Bingham house is Queer-coded and may indicate Creation Powers for Will!

I made a long post about this image recently—

—and somehow forgot to include two very important details about it!! To quickly summarize a little bit, Figment is a purple dragon that is Disney’s Epcot park mascot and is meant to be the full embodiment of imagination and freedom + to not let thoughts remain thoughts and to bring them into reality. He appears in an attraction called Journey Into Imagination with Figment too (I used to work in Epcot, next door to this ride, and am very familiar with Figment), which is extremely important for the full analysis. This dragon is sitting below Suzie’s window, and the entire shot itself holds significance I believe connects to imagery from seasons 1 & 2 and may indicate specific foreshadowing for s5. I highly recommend reading about that here in my original post if you haven’t and are interested, because I can’t summarize everything without rewriting my original post (including thoughts on my theory that Mike will come up with the final solution to defeat Vecna, which is connected to my Rubikscubegate theory). The most significant thing to take from it is the importance of freeing your mind and letting no one control it (also freeing yourself from forces that want to control you).

What I can summarize is this: Figment’s queer-coding and possible creation powers for Will. Both of these details are covered in one image from Figment’s attraction, at the very end of the ride. Throughout the ride, Figment is trying to get a character named Dr. Nigel to understand his perspective in that imagination shouldn’t be captured and controlled but free instead. Because if you set your mind/imagination free, your way of thinking can be turned around for the better. By the end of the ride, Dr. Nigel understands Figment’s perspective and celebrates it. The ride goes dark, and then we get a burst of color:

In my initial post, I talked a lot about what Figment’s character would clearly associate with for ST’s queer characters and the real queer people they represent. And how parts of the GA want to restrict and control the freedom to be different and think differently. What I didn’t remember to include is Figment’s association with rainbows. He’s been associated with rainbows ever since his character was created in 1983 (wow what a coincidence)!! In recent years as well, Figment is becoming more of a queer icon among fans for his non-conforming free thinking and ‘anything is possible’ mentality!

Now, when the rainbow appears in Journey Into Imagination, Figment is singing about how dreams can spark from ‘me and you’ when imagination is set free! And you know where this rainbow is sprouting from??

From a paint tube!!! And the tube says Figment Pigment; it’s insinuating creating from your imagination to bring thoughts into reality!!

In my original post, I mentioned Will could be multi-powered (like a wizard) and this could manifest in the form of creation abilities. Which would align with his artistry. He takes what his mind sees and puts it into reality.

And there’s Figment in Suzie’s room. And this character literally holds a paint tube that pours out a rainbow, encouraging the unrestrained power of free-thinking through song, and in s3 Dustin and Suzie sing the lyric “There upon a rainbow is the answer to our never ending story,” and back in s1 Will went missing but could’ve possibly bent the appearance of the UD with creation abilities (which happened to be in the same year Figment was created)…

We say on this tag all the time that gay love will save the world, and that’s entirely true because Figment’s presence makes that clear. He is against forced conformity and embodies freedom. He is a growing queer icon. He is sitting below Suzie’s window, where we see vibrant green outside. Will is the character we will circle completely back to in the final season. It’s his love for Mike, and in turn Mike’s love for Will, that will break the imprisoned web Henry has built and intends to keep building. And, I still believe, it’ll be Will (along with Mike because he is also a creator of words; it’s him and Will together) who ultimately opposes Henry’s standard of conformity with the power of free-thinking—his ability to create in opposition to the restriction Henry has forced.

Journey into Imagination with Figment may be a ridiculously-bad 2nd sequel to the well-loved original that adorned Epcot's Future World from 1983-1998, but it does have 2 redeeming factors: trash cans in the show scenes! As you explore Figment's upside down imagination, trash cans are spotted in both the kitchen and bathroom scenes.
