Summary:

The Monkey King was imprisoned under a mountain 500 years ago by his enemies in Heaven. Five hundred years later, the Earthly realm is overrun, and its humans oppressed, by demons. The gods and immortals are in hiding or oppressed by demons as well. A scholar secretly concocts a plan to bring together a few warriors and a monk, named Tripitaka, to undertake a quest to resurrect the Monkey King and find the Heavenly scrolls that were stolen by Monkey 500 years ago and hidden away secretly on earth. Anyone who finds the scrolls would gain unlimited power. However, the night the group is about to start on their quest, a demon attacks the scholar's home and kills everyone inside except for the scholar's adopted daughter, taking the golden crown necessary to revive the Monkey King. In his last moments, the scholar entrusts his daughter with the quest. She takes on the identity of Tripitaka and ventures out into the world, narrowly escaping death herself.

In a town she gives charity to a monk and ends up forced to work for a tavern owner, thus gaining a job and a room to sleep in. When the same demon that killed her adoptive father shows up, she secretly steals the magical crown and makes a run for it. When demons begin searching the town for her and the magic crown, she is disguised as a monk by the same monk she helped and successfully makes her way out of the city. In an opening along the side of a mountain, she finds the stony visage of the Monkey King's face, and puts the crown on his head. Finally, the Monkey King is free but he soon discovers that the crown is repressing most of his godly abilities. The pair return to the town and join up with Pigsy and Sandy, who are also gods, and the four of them begin their quest of finding the lost scrolls and gaining enough power to overthrow all the demons.

DC's Nuclear Winter Special #1 (2018)

I understand this to be a Santa-free zone, but when I stopped for a moment to consider skipping it I noticed it not only has Rip Hunter, but it has Superman One Million, so I am heading in out of fascination.

The Nuclear Winter Special - Rip Hunter. This is a very Mark Russell story, with all that implies. Using him for the frame story actually isn't the worst idea, as it spreads out the satire. It's on an 'Oogle' campus in the future and skewering tech bros.

Warmth - Batman 666 (groan). Why... why does Damian have a literal bat wing cape on top of his 666 coat? Why does DC persist with this potential future?

Also for the Lazarus Pit fiends (me among them) I note that Ra's has glowy green AND glowy red eyes during this story. Sigh.

Memory Hearth - Superman One Million. J'ONN!!!! THIS STORY INCLUDES DC ONE MILLION J'ONN!!! Okay that's the highlight of this entire issue right there. Also... 'Josh Johnstone' working on the Kent's farm as a handyman when Clark was little? I'm a sucker but that is ADORABLE, J'onn finding and spending time with the other alien on the planet.

Once and Future - Flash. This is Barry reminiscing on why being resurrected was a bad plan about how much he loves Iris and how they are separated by time and space and crises and villains destroying things.

Where the Light Cannot Reach - Aquaman. Arthur gets sent by some scientists to an abyssal trench to look for a radiation-eating microorganism to help with nuclear wasteland that is the earth and sea. He finds it and finds hope.

Last Daughters - Supergirl. Oh GOSH. Sometimes Tom Taylor really can write. In the nuclear wasteland, Kara finds Lucy, a two year old. Kara becomes her mother, and they spend the next two years travelling, until Kara can climb Mount Denali above the radioactive cloud. Kara gets up high enough to see sun, recharges, and then takes Lucy to the Fortress of Solitude, intending to put her in Clark's escape pod and re-enact the end of Krypton. But as Kara is placing Lucy inside, she remembers begging her own parents to come with her...and can't send Lucy alone. So they both squeeze in as Kara cannot abandon her child.

Last Christmas - Firestorm. In our post-apocalyptic world, Firestorm tracks down a nuclear power reading to a dead amusement park, and finds the Nuclear Family, whose power sources are all running down and who are celebrating a final Christmas together. He manages to help them run down at the same moment together (after they try to cause one last moment of destruction by feeding their remaining power to Firestorm to try and blow him up).

Northern Lights - Kamandi. This is a fascinating way to do the Hanukkah story, imo. It's a story of who you are and how your dead relatives guide you. (also it's Phillip Hester both on story and art, so I stared at the art for a while).

Nine Lives - Catwoman. It's Selina raising Holly Robinson's daughter Sophie in the apocalyptic future. (It does amuse me how many times Selina gets stuck looking after teenage girls over the years). Sophie is generous and gives away what they've stolen; Selina is pragmatic about keeping them alive.

Selina is preserving culture by stealing it to store; she goes off to stare at a Bast statue at the Gotham museum and stumbles onto a stockpile of rations at the same time. So she steals the rations, takes them back to Sophie, and tells her she can distribute them to others for Christmas (because Selina, at heart, is a soft touch).

The Birds of Christmas Past, Present and Future - Green Arrow. Ah yes, this story is reminding me why I tend to believe that Dinah has the worst taste in men (Ollie included), and so this is incredibly cathartic seeing Dinah having her own life and family that isn't just raising Ollie's kids. Go Dinah! This is not an apocalyptic future! You can be fond of and love Ollie and realise he's terrible for you!

Kaylin’s Daily Reason to Love the Dallas Stars: Episode 1

as the new season approaches, i’m once again starting my stars agenda! so here’s today’s (yes. i said today’s. i will continue this) reason to love the stars that isn’t just because they’re good! (they are!!)

1. Razor and Bogo!

Razor, aka Daryl Reaugh (right)

-no one really remembers his name because he is known as Razor to everyone. they even call him Razor on the broadcasts

-he’s been with us since 1996! he’s basically a national treasure

-he’s absolutely hilarious and makes the most interesting (and out of pocket) game comments/quips! he also has very colorful word choice when describing plays while they’re in slow mo

some of my favs from last season include:

-“the buffalo sabres are going to need a large jar of ointment after this game” (the stars had 7 goals at this point, it ended 10-4)

-he called the devils “the lucifers”

-“18 year old wyatt johnston is coming straight down the esophagus of the wild’s throat”

-“this should be fantabulous” (in reference to us going into overtime) (it was)

-“joe did what joe does— KABANG!”

-“if there are hockey gods, this was a hockey god goal”

-“mistake hockey is the best hockey!”

-“as i was saying in second period before wyatt johnston rudely interrupted me by hitting the post… *continues talking about pav’s points this season and career*”

Josh Bogorad (i call him Bogo) (no one else does) (he’s on the left)

-he does the play by play! he’s been with us since 2018

-i like him a lot bc he gives literally everything movement. he perfectly describes the game, which is lovely for the people listening to it on the radio!

-at the stars arena, when you go to the bathroom during the game, they play the radio so you can hear everything that’s going on! they don’t have mid game conversations like some other commentators

some of my favorite Bogo quotes bc he’s also funny

-“it’s Miro and the deadline acquisitions! that sounds like a band name” (in reference to an OT line of Miro, Domi, and Daddy)

-“he is always moving and is always a threat” (this was about Quinn!)

-“he blew a tire!” (referring to a kraken falling on his ass)

-“the ref was doing an irish jig in the corner to try anf get away from all that puck movement…” (razor) “they are celebrating st patty’s here so it works out” (bogo)

-often calls fights or scrums “extra curricular activities”

-“everything he touches turns into goals!” (about robo)

-“there’s been a plot twist here at american airlines center” (referring to stars being 0-2 and then catching up)

in conclusion, the stars broadcasting team is my absolute favorite and there’s never a dull or lull in the moment!

Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder sexually harassed a team employee and oversaw team executives who deliberately withheld millions of dollars in revenue from other clubs, and he has agreed to pay a $60 million fine, the league announced Thursday. The NFL released a 23-page report detailing the findings of an independent investigation into Snyder’s conduct just minutes after its owners unanimously approved the sale of the Commanders to Josh Harris for a record $6.05 billion. The fine represents 1% of the sale price; Snyder bought the team, then known as the Redskins, for $800 million. The investigation was led by former Securities and Exchange Commission chair Mary Jo White and conducted by her law firm, Debevoise & Plimpton. The league had pledged to make the findings of the probe public. Investigators concluded that Washington withheld $11 million in revenue that should have been shared with other teams, an amount the report suggests may have been far greater. White’s firm was unable to reach a conclusion about tens of millions of additional dollars that may have been withheld in part because Snyder and the team did not cooperate fully with the investigation, according to the report. The report concluded that Snyder sexually harassed former team employee Tiffani Johnston, allegations that Johnston first made last year in front of a House committee. Snyder placed his hand on Johnston’s thigh at a team dinner and pushed her toward his car as they were leaving the restaurant, the report said.
