Dream Boy
Tumblr media
Summary : In which the sweet dream boy you saw freshman year turns into Your dream boy sophomore year
You and Gavin first met a Umich your Freshman year in the first week in one of your many classes you had together . But you first saw Gavin at freshman orientation and immediately had a crush on him . You and Gavin basically had almost every class together . You can't lie he was hot and sweet but you didn't want to get in a relationship as this was your start to college and you knew most college guys that were freshman were just looking to hookup .
Over the first couple months after meeting Gavin you had gotten close, you guys had had study dates even though both of your friends you brought along to make it less date like told you they were just third wheeling and it was indeed a study date . You brought one of your friends from your theater class and Gavin brought one of his teammates from the hockey team .
After that you and Gavin got even closer now from the study dates you were now going to each others events you invited Gavin to your showcases and he invited you to his hockey games and sat with the other girlfriends . This went on for the rest of the year .
Then the day you had been dreading since you met Gavin had come the last day of classes , which meant not seeing Gavin as often due to summer break and you hated that .
At least for now you didn't have to think about that because there was one big event left : The Umich Hockey End of Year Party which the hockey team . Gavin had invited you saying that is was one last big hangout with all the guys and your friends to hand out before you left as his friends and your friends had kind of meshed into one big group. So as your leaving your last class you are texting Gavin and he let you know the dress code is just umich colors .
Later that night about an hour after the party started you are almost done getting ready. You decided to wear a dark maize tube top and blue shorts with a university of Michigan jacket but left it unbuttoned in the front . Just as you were putting on your shoes you got a text from Gavin :
Gav 🥰 : where are you I don't see you ? 😢
You : im done getting ready im heading over now lol
Gav : ok see you , when you get here park next to my car
About 10 minutes later you arrive to the frat house and park nexts to Gavins car . The house pretty crowded but thats to be expected with an end of year party . You enter the house and the sound of music and laughter fills your ears . You look towards the kitchen and see Gavin and his hockey teammates and some of the girlfriends laughing and drinking so you head over.
" hey Y/N's here " Ethan yells drunkenly , that makes Gavin turn towards you at the speed of light . You both make eye contact and it holds and you can feel the shift in your relationship. You had started to notice it about a week ago the subtle touches around your waist , the excuses made just so he can hold your hand and now this something is shifting and you aren't complaining
After coming back to reality and hear Ethan still screaming about the house reaching capacity but I couldn't really make it out since he 1. was drunk off his ass and 2. You couldn't stop staring at your boy . You can't believe your referencing him as your boy but you are and you love it
You and Gavin are still making eye contact but you are saying so many words his eyes are saying " come here " your eyes are saying " come get me " but both are saying " you feel it too" at this point Gavin has had enough and as you continue staring at his eyes as your standing against the counter he comes over to you trapping you in between his arms , " come to my room with me yeah" he asks . You nod your head as you look up at him.
He grabs your hand as he leads you up the stairs and his teammates see and they start whooping and whistling and you definitely hear Luca yell " Finally " you laugh as Gavin continues to lead you up the stairs to his room. You finally get to Gavins room and he ushers you in with his hand dangerously close to your ass which makes you smile and make your heart flutter a she closes his door .
Gavin walks to his bed as he takes off his shoes and sit on the edge . You stay back towards his door and lean on it as you both make eye contact . " c'mere pretty girl" he says. You walk over and you see him spread his legs open to accommodate your body , as you fit perfectly between his legs he holds the back of your thighs and pulls you as close as possible , he pulls you with so much strength you have to hold onto his shoulders , after you catch your balance you wrap your arms around his neck and stare into his eyes.
He inches his lips closer and closer as you say "Gav" in a breathy tone " I know baby I feel it to" " what are we now" you question " You're mine and I'm yours if you'll have me " he says. Thats all it takes for the damn to break and for you to crash your lips onto his , he groans as you quite literally take his breath away . He moves his hand from the back of your thighs to you waist as he pulls you so you're now straddling him and from there his hands move to your ass pinching and pulling which you take as a sign he's enjoying himself among other things .
After a while you pull away to catch your breath. "wow' you both say at the same time you laugh and blush as you hide your face in his neck. He then lays flat on his back as he takes you down with him so you're now laying on his chest . He laughs as you still blush with your face in his neck. " don't blush now baby you literally shoved your tongue down my throat a couple minutes ago" this makes you groan as he laughs even harder , that beautiful laugh you love so much .
After you both settle down and change out of the party clothes and into pajamas and for you thats just Gavins clothes you both cuddle up on his bed as he choses some random show to watch. The room fills with silence until Gavin says " its always been you since the day we met our first week of class " You look at him from his chest and smile as you say " its always been you too Gav ever since I saw you in freshman orientation " " But we didn't even meet yet we met a week later during the first week " he cocks his eyebrow " exactly my dream boy ive had a crush on you since I saw you during freshman orientation " . Gavin smiles as he leans down to connect your lips for the sweetest kiss you've ever had .
Note: HIIII I haven't written anything in a while but im back with this sweet piece for Gavin . As always requests are open send them my way if you have them

i think he knows | adam fantilli

summary: after pining for one another for a while, you finally make a move
warnings: not proofread, the section written in italics is a flashback, mentions of drinking, little bit of steamy activity and allusions to sex, kissing
notes: based on ‘i think he knows’ by taylor swift. first adam fic... not sure how i feel about this, it's kind of a mess
You were starting to go cross-eyed from staring at him so much.
Every chance you got, whenever Adam was preoccupied in a conversation with Dylan who was standing next to him, you’d catch a glance at him.
You were out at a bar in Nashville, celebrating Adam being drafted by Columbus. Adam had invited tons of people to be in his group of support for the draft, including you.
You and Adam met in class, being partnered together for a mini assignment. Over the course of the project and the rest of the school year, the two of you became close friends. Somewhere along the way, you’d developed feelings for him. However, you couldn’t work up the courage to tell him how you felt. So you stayed friends. Close friends.
His right hand was gripping his glass of whiskey, beads of condensation rolling down to his knuckles. You eyed him as he brought the glass to his lips and took a sip. Your brain was wracked with images of his hands running up and down your sides, getting to know your body like it’s his own.
“Can you quit staring at my brother like that? It’s creeping me out.”
You turn to face Luca whose face is scrunched up in disgust.
“What?” You say.
“You’re looking at him like you’re being starved and he’s a fucking filet mignon.” Luca scoffs, sipping from his beer.
Your cheeks heat up, trying to defend yourself against Luca. “I’m not…we’re not…I don’t like him like that.”
You immediately regret even saying anything as your words come out rushed and unsure.
“Oh please everyone here knows you two are drooling over one another and frankly it’s disgusting.” He says.
You sigh. “Is it that obvious?” You ask.
“Are you kidding me?” Luca asks, a grin tugging on his lips. “The tailgate party for the final football game of the season? Do you remember that?”
Adam knew what he was doing. He had to. He was wearing the UMich t-shirt you had cut into a tank after you told him he needed more variety in his wardrobe. You had also added that tanks were hot on guys. He had to be wearing it for you, right?
But then again there was the chance that this was all in your head. The flirting that Adam had been doing since you’d finished your joint assignment could all be in your head and was just him being nice.
Suddenly Adam was on his way over to you and your friends, who made an excuse to leave so the two of you could talk alone.
“Your DIY is a hit.” He says.
“I am an artist if I do say so myself.” You chuckle, fiddling with the choppy left sleeve of Adam’s shirt.
Your fingers brush his skin, a slight rush running up your fingertips. You look at Adam’s face, a soft smile on his lips as he looks down at you.
“What?” You ask.
“You look good.” He says.
“Thank you.” You smile.
There’s a beat of silence while the two of you hold eye contact.
“What, you’re not going to tell me I look good?” He asks.
You scoff at his cocky comment. “I don’t need to tell you something you already know.”
“Oh, you think I look good?” Adam smirks.
“That is not what I said.” You say.
“Mhm, but that’s what you were thinking.” He laughs.
Your cheeks flush pink, Adam smiling at the reaction he got out of you. He rests a hand on the wall, leaning over you.
“I’m serious, you look amazing.” He says.
Your cheeks flush even pinker, if possible, Adam slowly leaning his head down.
“Get a room!”
You and Adam turn your heads to where some of his teammates are. All of them are staring at you, smirking and laughing at the two of you. Adam flips them off, turning back to you. “I’m sorry about them.” He sighs.
“I-it’s okay. I’m going to go find my friends.” You say, weaving through the crowd to find your friends.
Adam walks over to his friends, a fake smile on his lips. “I hope you guys are all impotent.” He says.
“You’re blushing just thinking about him.” Luca groans.
You glance over to Adam who you find looking right back at you.
“Listen,” Luca says, drawing your eyes off his brother. “Go to him. Get out of here, and take him with you.”
“Are you whoring out your brother?” You ask jokingly.
Luca rolls his eyes, pushing you towards Adam. You walk over to Adam, stopping next to Dylan. When Dylan sees you, he makes an excuse, leaving the two of you alone.
“I just wanted to say congrats, again.” You say.
“Thank you.” Adam smiles.
“I’m going to head out now, though.” You say. “Go back to the hotel…”
You trail off, hoping he would pick up what you were putting down. Looking down at you, you feel your heartbeat skip under his gaze. “Okay.” Adam says.
That’s it? You furrow your eyebrows slightly, expecting Adam to have picked up on what you were insinuating. You are slightly confused until a smirk begins to tug on his lips. You should’ve expected this, as his attitude was a common thing you got to see. Something you’d always wanted to force away.
He stayed silent, not offering you much more than his eyes dragging up and down your body. Was he going to make you spell it out? If Adam was going to make you jump through hoops, you were at least going to do it under your terms.
“Yeah, go back… Get out of this tight dress, maybe take a hot bath… Try on my new set from Victoria Secret…” You trail off.
Adam gulps, and you can practically see him imagining you in a matching lingerie set. You had him obsessed with you and you completely understood why.
“Fuck.” He mumbled, shifting his feet to try and adjust himself.
You giggled, liking the effect you had on him. You rest your hands on his chest, flattening his dress shirt. You can practically feel his racing heart in his chest.
“Of course, there’s always room for a plus one.” You say softly.
That’s enough to push Adam over the edge, grabbing his glass from the table and downing the remainder of his drink. He takes your hand, pulling you out of the restaurant. You briefly stop by Luca, Adam asking him to tell their guests that he wasn’t feeling well so they were going back to the hotel. Luca agrees to cover, sneakily holding his hand out to high-five you as you pass him.
You and Adam step out into the warm Nashville air, walking down the sidewalk toward the car that Adam had rented. He hands you the keys, seeing as he had drunk and you hadn’t. You slide in the driver's seat, Adam’s hand finding your thigh immediately.
You start up the car, turning onto the street. You hit a light, looking over at Adam, whose eyes hadn’t left your face since you got in the car. The streetlights lit up his face, his normally light blue eyes looking like a darker indigo colour in the nighttime.
You continue down the streets of Nashville, eventually pulling into the parking lot of your hotel. You two were fast into the lobby and into the elevator. As soon as the doors shut, Adam’s hands were on your hips, pressing you against the metal wall. His lips connect to yours, your hands going into his hair. He deepens the kiss, causing you to instinctively tug on his roots, eliciting a groan.
When the doors open, you split apart, darting down the hall to your room. Fumbling with the keycard, you eventually unlock the door, you and Adam slipping inside, your tongues a tangled mess.

summary: Adam left for Columbus with the promise that it changed nothing in your relationship. What do you do when it changes everything?
warnings: angst :)
note: for all intents and purposes Luca was at the game on 10/21. i’ve never written for adam before so pls let me know what you think!
You hadn’t stopped smiling for the last two hours. Adam had been drafted third overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets, which shocked everyone except for him. You had expected him to go to the Ducks, and when they selected Leo Carlsson, you were confused, but Adam wasn’t. He looked calm, cool, and collected as he always did and that was enough to ease the nerves you had for him. When his name was finally called, you watched as he enveloped his family in hugs with the biggest grin.
“I love you so much,” He’d whispered in your ear, arms wrapping around your waist as he pulled you in close, “Thank you for being here.”
“Always,” You mumbled into his ear, placing a delicate kiss to his cheek before he made his way down to the stage.
You hadn’t stopped smiling since then. You were so happy and so proud of him, and so was the entirety of his family. They surrounded him with warm embraces and encouraging words as he basked in the attention, eyes flitting towards you ever so often with a smile. He’d tried to make his way towards you, but you would shove him away and tell him to celebrate with everyone else, that the two of you would have your time later.
Luca made sure to stick close to you most of the night, knowing that Adam wouldn’t want you to be alone while he was bombarded with congratulations and pictures. You’d tried to get him to spend time with the others too, but he was a lot less easy to persuade than his younger brother considering it wasn’t his night. The two of you watched as Adam gracefully accepted compliments and made sure to greet everyone who approached him with kindness.
After a fun filled dinner with Adam’s family and loved ones, the rest of you returned to the hotel to get some rest. You were going along with the family tomorrow to explore Nashville a bit before you were to go back home and the Fantilli’s back to theirs. When you’d gotten back to the hotel, you had to carefully switch rooms with Luca since you and Adam technically weren’t supposed to share a bed.
You were taking your makeup off in the bathroom when you let your mind drift off to something you had tried to ignore. While Columbus wasn’t nearly as far as Anaheim, it was still away from you and everyone else. Adam was going to be moving to another state, but what did that mean for your relationship? Would he want to break up?
Shaking your head, you threw the dirty makeup wipe in the trash can and stepped into the cool hotel room. Adam was laying on the bed, shirt off and blanket pushed down to his hips as he scrolled on his phone. His gaze snapped in your direction when he heard the bathroom door shut, and a smile quickly formed on his face as he tossed his phone to the side and held the blanket open for you to crawl into.
You settled into the slot between his side and arm, cuddling into him as you tried to calm your thoughts. Adam slipped his hand underneath the shirt you had borrowed from him months ago and began gently scratching your back. He could tell that you were overthinking something, and he knew that was a way to get you to calm down enough to talk to him about it if you’d wanted to.
“Adam,” You hesitantly spoke, tracing patterns on the naked skin of his chest, “This won’t change anything, right? Like between us.”
You shifted your head so you were looking up at him, and Adam swore he felt a piece of his heart break when he saw the fear swimming in your eyes. He hated that he knew exactly what you were thinking, because it scared him, too. He knew that moving away wasn’t going to be easy for either of you, but he knew one thing for sure. He was willing to do whatever it takes to make sure it was going to work.
“No,” He firmly stated as he brought his hand up to move your hair behind your ear, “It won’t change anything except for the physical distance between us. I promise.”
You fell asleep that night with the comfort of knowing that Adam had no intention of letting your relationship break apart because he was leaving. You spent the rest of your summer either physically with him, or talking to him over the phone as often as the two of you could manage. The two of you exchanged a lot of late night phone calls and snapchats, leaving the ache in your chest from missing him ever so slightly growing the longer you went without seeing him. However, Adam stayed true to his word and he didn’t let it change anything.
Truthfully, you couldn’t remember when it started. You’re not sure if it was when training camp started, when classes began, or when pre-season games began. You couldn’t figure it out, but the one thing you did know was that things had changed.
Calls with Adam had gone from multiple times a day, to once a day, to once a week if you were lucky. Texts went unanswered for entire days at a time, and you tried to be understanding. You really did, but it wasn’t until Luca had mentioned Adam showing up a video of something he’d done at practice that you truly realized something had shifted in your relationship.
You’d tried to find a break in both your schedule and Adam’s so you could talk to him about how you felt, but it was proving to be difficult with his hectic schedule. You tried to tell yourself that it was okay, that he wasn’t losing feelings for you, that he was just busier now. You didn’t want to seem like an over controlling girlfriend who needed his attention all the time, but you were in need of sone reassurance.
“Hey, I don’t have a lot of time,” Adam spoke, stepping into one of the empty rooms, “What’s up?”
You ignored the way your chest tightened at his subpar greeting, but you knew he was busy, “I just wanted to talk to you a bit.”
“That’s it,” He sounded annoyed, “Look, if it isn’t important I need to get back to—”
“Practice. I know. I just wanted to ask you something,” You closed your eyes, letting out a nervous sigh, “Do you- Do you want to break up?”
“What,” He snapped, and you could picture his brows pulling together and eyes narrowing in frustration, “No. Why the fuck would you think that?”
You couldn’t help but let the tears that were lining your eyes spill over onto your cheeks, biting the inside of your cheek in order to keep yourself from letting out a sob. He was angry with you for your question, and that hurt you more than you thought it would because it meant he didn’t see that anything was wrong. Maybe that should be a good thing, and it would’ve been had there not clearly been a change.
“We just don’t talk that often anymore,” You explained as you wiped at your cheeks.
“I’m busy,” He retorted, growing slightly annoyed.
“I know,” You shook your head, “I know you are, but Luca says you talk to him all the time. He says you send him videos and call him every day.”
“So what,” He scoffed, “I can’t talk to my brother now? Is that what you’re saying?
“What,” You gasped, “No. No, that isn’t what I'm saying at all. I just want to know why you don’t talk to me anymore. You promised it wouldn’t change anything, but it has.”
Adam went silent on the other end, his breathing heavy as he tried to calm himself down. He wasn’t angry with you, but he was frustrated that you would think he wanted to break up with you. He knows he hasn’t been the best communicator recently, but he thought you would understand. After all, he still meant everything he’d told you in the hotel room that night, at least he thought he did.
“I’m not trying to argue, Adam,” You tried again, silent tears flowing down your cheeks in waves.
“You sure about that,” He bit back, visibly wincing when he realized that he was being unnecessarily harsh, “Look, baby, I’m sorry, okay? I really am. I’ll try and do better about all that. It’s just— I’m struggling a bit and talking to Luca is the only thing that really calms me down. But hey, I gotta get to practice. I’ll see you this weekend?”
Ignoring the way your heart clenched when he said Luca was the only person to calm him down, you nodded though he couldn’t see you. Choking back the sobs that bubbled in your throat, you managed to breath out a shaky, “Yeah. Okay. See you this weekend. I lo—”
The line went dead, and your cries echoed throughout your apartment. You sank to the floor, pulling your knees to your chest as you let your emotions roll over you. Everything you had been feeling over the last three months consumed your entire being as you sobbed on the floor, thankful that your roommate had work for the evening. Adam not saying he loved you just solidified what you only thought you knew, and now you weren’t sure where to go from there.
You tried to tell Luca that you didn’t feel well and that going to see Adam play wasn’t a good idea because you didn’t want to get him sick, but he saw straight through your bullshit. He knew you were lying, and he wasn’t quite sure why. Luca rolled his eyes and continued packing your bag, mumbling something incoherent before he settled on telling you that you were going and that was the end of the story.
When you arrived in Columbus with Luca and his parents, the first thing you did was take everything to the hotel since you arrived a bit later than you’d hoped and Adam was going to have to head to the arena. Luca could tell that you were nervous, and he did his best to make you comfortable and reassure you that everything was going to be okay. You managed to give him a weak smile, but you weren’t sure if what he said was true. You didn’t know if everything was going to be okay.
When you were around Adam’s parents, you were good at putting up the act that everything was fine, but that didn’t stop your skin from crawling with anxiety the closer the end of the game came. Your leg was bouncing and you were chewing at your bottom lip until it bled. Luca kept smacking your arm when he’d noticed that you’d pulled your lip between your teeth, but you would only stop when you noticed he was looking.
“Do either of you know how to get to the locker room,” Julia asked when the third period was over and the Blue Jackets had defeated the Wild.
“I do,” Luca shrugged, “Sort of. Adam gave me a tour of the arena after his first training camp and I think I remember where to go.”
Your heart sank at Luca’s words, and you felt selfish for feeling the way that you did. You didn’t care, nor would you ever care, that Adam was showing things to Luca that he didn’t show to you, but you hadn’t even seen a picture of the inside of his locker. You hadn’t seen any sort of picture of the arena from Adam, only knowing what you did because of social media and your own research.
You followed closely behind Luca, his parents lingering behind the two of you and quietly whispering to each other. Luca was carefully holding your hand in his own, silently comforting you as everyone waited for Adam. He could quite literally feel your body shaking with nerves, and it was then that he truly realized that something was off, but neither you nor his brother had told him why.
When players started to trickle out of the locker room, you felt like you were going to pass out. You couldn’t breathe and your head became dizzy. If it weren’t for Luca’s hand encasing your own, you’re sure you would’ve been on the floor by now. However, when you saw Adam walking out of the locker room, you did black out for a fleeting moment.
His hair was damp as he ran his fingers through it, his suit hugging in his body in the right ways. He had a smile on his face that made his eyes sparkle even under the ugly lighting in the hallway of the arena, and it only brightened when his eyes settled on his family. His eyes briefly met your own, and you swear that they dulled from the split second they did, but you hoped that it was just your imagination playing tricks on you. God, you hoped so.
“Oh, there he is,” Julia beamed, gripping your other hand in her own.
You plastered a smile of your own on your face despite the sinking feeling in your stomach. Adam reached the four of you and you stepped back, like you always did, and let him greet his family before you. You watched as he pulled them all in for tight hugs and told them how much he missed them. He finally turned towards you, and you wanted the world to open a hole in the ground and swallow you whole.
“Hey,” You meekly smiled, scared that he was going to dismiss you in front of his entire family.
He took the two steps needed and wrapped you in his arms, pulling you into his chest as he placed a small kiss on your temple. To the outside world, it could’ve been seen as cute and normal for a couple who hadn’t seen each other in months. To you, it felt wrong. Everything about it was wrong. Adam’s touch felt different. His hold felt different. Everything was different.
“Thank you for being here,” He whispered into your ear, and you were briefly brought back to the moment he was drafted. That hug, that embrace was how you should feel right now, but it was wrong. You wanted so desperately for it to be right because your feelings for him hadn’t changed, but maybe his had.
Much like the last time you all were together, you went out for a late dinner before returning to your hotel. The game didn’t end until late and Adam wasn’t feeling up to much after that, but Luca suggested that you go stay with Adam for the night. He ignored your pleading stares and instead insisted that you snore and he wanted to get a good night’s rest before tomorrow.
Adam seemed hesitant to agree, but he agreed nonetheless less. He took your hand in his, lacing your fingers like he always did and tugged you along to his car in silence. You didn’t know what to say to him. You were afraid that if you spoke, you wouldn’t be able to keep yourself from crying. You were afraid that if he spoke, he would say the five words that would absolutely shatter you entirely.
Being alone in the car with Adam felt like you were standing on a tightrope, all alone and scared. You knew you needed to say something to him, to try and talk about what was going on in your head, but you were terrified. Everything bad that could happen was playing in your mind, but you knew it was now or never because once you were at his apartment, his teammate would be there and you didn’t want an audience.
“Adam,” You called out, swallowing the lump in your throat, “Can we talk about something?”
“Anything,” He nodded, glancing away from the road while giving you a tight lipped smile.
“What happened,” You shakily let out, tears already pricking at the corners of your eyes, “What happened between us? And don’t say you don’t know what I’m talking about. Things haven’t been the same between us since you got here and you know that. You don’t talk to me anymore. You don’t tell me anything anymore. You haven’t told me you loved me in almost two months.
“It’s just— Adam you promised nothing would change, and now everything has and I don’t know why. Do you not love me anymore? Do you not want to be with me?”
Adam’s breathing faltered as your words hit him, though he isn’t sure why he’s so surprised. He expected something like this to happen, especially after the phone call the two of you shared three days ago. He’d been thinking about everything, about your relationship, and he realized that you were right. Something had changed.
He was scared to admit it out loud to himself, but when he hugged you after the game, he knew. It felt wrong, but it wasn’t anything that you were doing. It was all him and he couldn’t figure out why. He doesn’t know what changed for him because he knows he’s still insanely in love with you, even though he hadn’t said it since he got to Columblus. He didn’t know what was wrong.
“I don’t know,” He whispered, cutting through the suffocating silence.
Your hands were clasped in your lap, tears spilling onto your cheeks as you gathered the courage to repeat the one question that was plaguing your mind, “Do you not love me anymore? Is that it?”
“Of course I love you,” He shook his head, hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were turning white, “It’s just— I don’t fucking know, okay?”
“Is it not enough, then,” You tried, eyes boring into the side of his face as you begged for an explanation. For him to give you anything.
“I don’t know.”
“Jesus, Adam can you say anything else,” You scoffed as your fingernails cut into the flesh of your palms.
“I don’t know,” He snapped, regret instantly forming in his chest when he watched you snap your gaze away from him and a blanket of nothingness washed over your face.
“Take me back to the hotel,” You ordered, voice thick yet flat. He called out your name pleadingly, “No. Take me back to the hotel. I’m done”
“With the conversation or with me,” He whispered, not bothering to fight back the tears that had been decorating the bottoms of his eyes since the conversation started.
“I don’t know.”
The drive to the hotel felt like it lasted an eternity as an uncomfortable, sticky silence enveloped the both of you and it made you want to scream. You never thought you would feel like this around him. What happened to the kisses that left you breathless and like time stopped around you? What happened to the whispers of the future? Things were never supposed to be like this with him.
You kept your head turned to the window, watching as the unfamiliar city blurred past you, and it was a little unsettling, honestly. How the world around you seems so perfectly fine while the world you had built in your head was crumbling with each passing second. It was devastating and cruel.
Adam was going to war with himself as he drove you away, in more ways than one. He knew he was wrong, he knew that everything was his fault, he knew that he fucked up. But he didn’t know how to fix it. He didn’t know what to do.
When Adam pulled up to the front of the hotel, your hand lingered on the door handle. Despite telling him that you were done, you wanted him to call out to you, to beg you to stay because you would stay. If he asked, you would stay. All he had to do was say don’t go, and you wouldn’t.
Adam watched as your hand hovered over the handle, and he wanted to stop you. He wanted to scream at you to please stay, to go back to his apartment with him so you talk about everything and try and fix it, but he didn’t know how. You said you were done, and while he didn’t know what that meant entirely, he respected that and let you get out of the car without another word.
You felt like you couldn’t breathe as you stepped out of the car and into the brisk Ohio air without so much as a goodbye from Adam. The door shut behind you, and all you could hear through the ringing in your ears was the sound of him driving away. Reality settled in and you felt like you could throw up. The last thing you remember is collapsing in Luca’s arms as gut wrenching sobs tore through your body as you wondered what went wrong.

His head rested on your lap, your hands raking through his hair as he vented to you about the events that took place earlier that night. “And then she said I didn't care about her. I- I mean, I didn’t mean to make her feel that way. I just–”
“Wait, so just let me get this straight. She told you to buy her a $2,000 dress, and you said no because you couldn’t afford it—understandably—and she got mad at you? I mean, Adam—”
“You’re making her seem like she’s a bad person,” he said, sitting up and taking the spot across from you on your tiny twin sized bed. You two sat in your dorm room, doing your daily talk about what Katerina, Adam’s girlfriend, did this time. And it hurt knowing that the guy you have been in love with your entire life is in love with someone else, but he was your best friend, you had no choice but to stand back and support him.
You met Adam when you were 14 when he joined his brother at Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. You were initially friends with Luca having met him in the library at school. He was struggling with math and every time you heard him get an equation wrong on those flimsy little flashcards, you cringed a little. So, taking it upon yourself (you were quite the confident 14-year-old), you sat down next to him, outstretched your hand, introduced yourself as his new tutor, and shooed away the poor kid who desperately thanked you for getting him out of that.
After a year of tutoring Luca, you two became inseparable, and when you heard that his younger brother was coming to play hockey for the school, you knew you had to meet him. And, most of the time, you were glad that you did, except for nights like these.
You laughed incredulously. “Adam, she got mad at you for not being able to afford an expensive dress. She’s not really the best person.”
“She might not be the best all the time—”
You scoffed, grabbing his hands and holding them in yours as you stared at him intently. “You deserve someone who is the best all the time; someone who genuinely makes you happy; who doesn’t leave you like this every single night.” You deserve me, you wanted to say, but you clamped your lips shut before your true feelings could ever manage to escape.
Huffing and dismissing your words, he pushed you to the side, laying down on the small space beside you. His hands resting behind his head, he stared at the ceiling as you kept your arms secured to your sides. Sometimes you were scared to get too close to him, afraid of what you might do in a fit of spontaneity, scared that you could ruin your entire friendship in one heated moment.
“This whole girlfriend thing is so complicated,” he murmured absentmindedly before turning to the side, facing you. “Still up for the marriage at 30 rule?”
You shook your head, breathing out a laugh. “You wanna say that when you have a girlfriend right now?”
Adam shrugged. “Just taking extra precautions.”
Rolling your eyes, you spun onto your side, looking at him dead-on. “What if I end up in a relationship and you don’t?”
“Then I’ll ruin his fucking life,” he replied, a small smile dancing on his lips. You knew he was joking, but sometimes you wished he wasn’t. You wished he saw a life where you could be the one he marries, a life where he could be happy with you, not just as an extra precaution, but because he really wanted to.
“Will Kat be at the game tomorrow?” you asked randomly, as if the question just morphed itself out of thin air. She was never there. She was always busy with something: shopping with the girls, working out with a classmate, practicing cheer drills. You were so convinced that she has never even seen Adam in his hockey gear.
You were there every game, cheering him on from the student section, pretending not to catch the disappointed expression on his face every time he realized she wasn’t there—again.
And just like time and time before, Adam with his ever present hopeful spirit, sighed and said, “Hope so.”
They were up 4-1.
The children of Yost screamed so loud, you were sure that the top of the building could fly off at any minute. And just as Rutger Mcgroarty scored the last and final game-winning goal, making the score 5-1, the crowd burst into another set of chants as you watched the boys jump each other on the ice. Everyone looked so happy, and for the first time, that happiness included Adam.
You waited in the lobby, ready to congratulate him and the rest of the team on the win, like you do every game. Truth be told, you loved seeing a freshly showered Adam, high off a well-deserved win. And expecting to have to find his tall figure in the crowd of students, you jumped back as he found you immediately.
The lobby was crowded, excited conversations filing into the room, leaving Adam to shout in your direction. “I saw you out there!”
You rolled your eyes, laughing. “You see me every time!”
He smiled, his brows furrowing simultaneously as if realizing something. In mere seconds, he grabbed your hand, pulling you towards the exit. You wanted to protest, to tell him that you had to congratulate the rest of the boys, especially Luca, but Adam was holding your hand and it felt so perfect. It felt like this was your life. Adam holding your hand, pulling you to secluded spaces, spaces meant just for the two of you. It felt like it was meant to be, like you were made for this; for him.
You guys rounded the side of the building, your arms hugging your body as the snow slowly rained down on you two. The lights outside flickered dimly, but you saw his smile, and you didn’t care about anything but him. In your mind, it was just Adam, Adam, Adam.
“It’s so easy with you,” is the first thing he said. You pulled your brows together, confused as to what he meant by that. Noticing your expression, he went on. “I mean, tell me the last time you missed one of my games.”
You scoffed. “You are a conceited little shit, aren’t you?”
He shook his head, huffing out a laugh. “C’mon, just tell me.”
You racked your brain, trying to think back to the last time you missed one. And then, as if a lightbulb lit in your brain, you finally remembered. You think he remembered too. “We were 16, you were playing for the Chicago Steel, and I was dying from swine flu because your ass decided to make me a grilled cheese with expired butter.”
“Okay, okay!” He held his hands up in defense. “I did rush to your aid after the game, though.”
“Yeah, and you agreed to get me a wet towel if I watched an hour of your game highlights,” you retorted, the conversation replacing the chills in your body with warm, happy memories.
He stuffed his cold hands in his pockets, shrugging. “Well, my point is!” he said, sending you into a fit of laughter.
“You are so stupid!”
“And that was so uncalled for!” he chuckled, tilting his head down at you. You looked like some sort of snow princess with the white flakes delicately landing on your hair. Your cute nose was red and he watched you shiver as he slipped his arms around your torso, pulling you to his chest as your arms instinctively wrapped around him. It was foreign for the two of you to be hugging, but this one felt different.
“My point is,” he restarted. “you have been to almost all of my games.”
You nodded in response, wondering where this was going. And you were even more curious when he said, “What’s my favorite color?”
With no hesitation, you responded with, “Blue.”
“Where was I born?”
“Are you really making me do an Adam Fantilli quiz? I mean, I knew your ego was high, but—”
“C’mon,” he laughed, resting his chin on your head.
You smiled. “Nobleton.”
“My real name?”
“Adamo,” you answered before taking a step back from his grasp. “She didn’t know that?”
He shrugged. “She didn’t know anything about me—not like you do.”
You sighed. You didn’t want to do this while he was with Kat. While you didn’t like her, it felt wrong to think about him like this when you felt that, maybe just maybe, he might be thinking about you in the same way. “Adam—”
“I broke up with her last night when I left your dorm.”
Your head raised, meeting his gentle gaze. You were shocked. He liked her so much, I mean, he was defending her the entire night. What happened?
Holding your hands, just as you hand done to him the night before, he took a step closer as you felt the heat radiate off of him and onto you. “You told me I deserve someone who makes me happy. I deserve someone who won’t miss a single game unless I food poisoned her, who knows me—not just surface level me—who doesn’t make me feel bad about anything. I’m convinced I have never felt bad when I’m with you. You belong with me, Y/N, and... I have only ever belonged to you."
