Note: if you're like me and you prefer serious crime dramas with minimal comedy and 0 romance, then this is the drama for you. It's very serious and nobody's fooling around. Not too terribly whumpy but oh man. Oh man. Was it all worth it for the last two episodes of s2. You gotta trust me on that one.

THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Impeccable wardrobes, rebellious teens, heirs to fried chicken fortunes, cursed engagement rings, reluctant romantics, unhappy marriages, galas, book deals, ruthless internet comments, best friends, tests of seduction, and exciting new love.

HOT TAKE: None of the relationships in this show really make sense as all the partners are all only about 30% suited for each other. There's some personal, emotional character growth which makes this a somewhat-relatable love story, but not enough to really feel like any of this was really worth the time I spent with it.

One thing is for sure, though: you can always rely on Chansung to play a total bastard of a boyfriend.

So it’s your typical cliché classic romcom with a certain flair to it with a stellar cast. Unfortunately, it does suffer like most dramas do nowadays. It starts out excellent and starts to decline towards the end. I suppose the writers wanted to draw it out more creating more unnecessary angst. Granted I do love angst to my dramas, but when it is inserted towards the end, especially the last two episodes (everything seemed way too bloated in the last one) I tend to get grumpy. Nevertheless the romcom still feels classic, it just depends on how you watch it.

They may be doing all this to protect Jang Wook, but they are going about it all wrong. He has had no power in his life and now that he finally has a little bit of hope he might join Songrim and become just like his peers, his hopes are cruelly destroyed for his own safety. 

But he doesn’t know any of the reasoning behind this decision, all he sees is how unjustly he has been treated his whole life and now even this hope has been taken away from him. I bet he is going to be even more determined to become the best mage in the country just to spite everyone who tried to stop him or stood in his way. 

This has all the makings of a tragedy that will be caused by good intentions ending up destroying things…

Alchemy of Souls (Part 1 & 2)

This is definite another favorite of mine; right next to Scarlet Heart Ryeo. Alchemy of Souls & Alchemy of Soul: Light and Shadow tell the story a young group of mage who have to fight against the greed of soul shifters and the sorcerous that conjure the spell. The story has a perfect balance of humor, action, romance, and suspense in a beautifully threaded plot.

The story begins with Naksu, a powerful female assassin, who wants to avenge the murder of her father as she follows her master's orders. And Jang Ok trying to unlock the power within him in his quest to becoming the mage everyone is trying to prevent him to become because of the truth of his birth. These two meet when Jang Ok has left his last master and she has shifted to the body of a blind girl in order to escape death. But she is no longer the powerful mage she had been, now that she is trapped in this body and in order to regain her power, she accepts becoming Jang Ok's master disguised as servant.

These two lives are entwined in a tangle of intrigue, misunderstanding and friendships that are strengthened and forged as Naksu as Mu Deok and Jang Ok walk the challenging terrain to make Jang Ok reach the highest level of a mage.

I fell in love with the characters, their personalities, their struggles and feelings. The end of the first part broke my heart.

The second part starts 3 years after Mu Deok's death and Jang Ok's returning from the afterlife with the ice stone. Jang Ok who is surrounded by shadows, and the pain of losing the love of his life, has become the most powerful mage and carries the responsibility of destroying soul shifters. Meanwhile, the two souls that had co-existed in Mu Deok's body are now enclosed in Naksu's body. But this time, both souls have lost their memories and powers and are imprisoned in the Jinyowon household. It is through Jin Bu Yeon's interaction with Jang Ok and the others that she slowly regains her powers and memories. In this last part, the youth come together to defeat the greed and selfishness of the king, queen, and everyone who sought to gain power through the alchemy of souls and the ice stone.

This series was definitely worth the wait! I recommend it to everyone. I will be thinking about this story for a long time. I know I will be watching this one multiple times.

DRAMA REVIEW | True To Love (2023)

True To Love’s story is mediocre at best and its script problematic AF.

I swear the writer of this drama never hold a proper conversation with a woman before, and further more seems to want to constantly humiliate the female lead. I understand wanting to bring a know it all character down so she can grow to become a better person but that’s not what the writer does.

The relationships per se are not bad and there’s development, except for the married couple which I detested with passion. Especially the husband since it made it look like what the wife was asking for was insane when in fact he has grown lazy and makes her feel unwanted and not loved.

The acting is not bad, these are all really talented artists, but I simply can’t recommend this drama.
